Pearls and Poison by Duffy Brown ~ A Consignment Shop Mystery ~ Review

I have had a chance to read a couple books in Duffy Brown's Consignment Shop Mystery Series and I have to say that this lady has a way of writing a mystery story that I just love. Not only does Ms. Brown write a very intriguing mystery but she can make me laugh as I'm reading it. I have to say I just can not get enough of her work.

Pearls and Poison is another great mystery by Duffy Brown. I really enjoyed reading this story. Reagan has a way of investigating that gets her in trouble every time. This girl is a magnet for things to go wrong. However she does tend to get to the bottom of things. I love Aunt Kiki. I think she would be a kick to be around. She has a way of getting herself into plenty of mischief too. Ms. Brown has created fun characters that I just could not help but enjoy reading about.

She also has created a mystery that kept me guessing until the end of the book. I must admit I had plenty of suspects lined up that may have killed Kip. There is plenty of dramatic moments that kept me turning pages quickly.

I know that I will certainly be anxiously awaiting the release of Duffy Brown's next book. I can't wait to see what Reagan and Kiki get involved in next. I'm sure it will be a humdinger of a story.

I was given the opportunity to read this book so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you about Pearls and Poison.

Mystic Capers (Acorn Hills Series) by Grace Augustine ~ Review ~

Mystic Capers is the second book I have had the pleasure of reading by Grace Augustine. She has created a wonderful series with fun characters, great places to visit, and touching story lines. I have to say that Grace Augustine's characters are so well developed that it seemed like I was visiting old friends when reading Mystic Capers. I had the chance to meet most of the characters in the first book Bittersweet. I'm a huge fan of series, because I do like to catch up with friends with each new book.

Mystic Capers is Ginger Farnsworth's turn for us lucky readers to learn her story. She has quite a story to be told. I loved that Grace Augustine not only told us her present day story but told us about her past as well. I sometimes feel that I have a hard time keeping up with an author that tells about the past as well as the present in such great detail. I have to say I had no trouble at all Ms. Augustine has done a fabulous job of telling Ginger's story.

I really liked Ginger, she is such a likable character and I have to say that some of the foods described certainly made me hungry. You see Ginger is a great Chef and we hear about some of the fabulous foods she makes in this story.

I really enjoyed watching Ginger and Jordan meet and get to know each other in this story. They have such a touching relationship. I don't want to tell you too much but this couple has a very sweet story to be told and I really enjoyed it.

If you enjoy romance series books that involve great friendships, a wonderful romance, some touching moments and as well as some humor then I think you will enjoy this book. If you have not had a chance to read Grace Augustine's work yet you may want to start with Bittersweet but I really don't think you would have a hard time reading Mystic Capers as a stand alone book first.

I will be anxiously awaiting which of the wonderful friends from Acorn Hills that Ms. Augustine is going to tell us more about next. I know I will be looking forward to her next release.

I received this wonderful book as a birthday present. I can't think of a better present for a reader like me than a book can you all? However I wanted to share my thoughts with you on Mystic Capers. As always it has been my pleasure to share my thoughts with you.

You may read my review of Bittersweet here.

EXCERPT:

         They showered and held each other, naked in her bed. It felt so good to be with a man that way again. Until then, she hadn’t realized how much she truly missed a man’s arms around her, and the feeling of safety and security it provided. The way he nuzzled into her neck as he held her, the way his breath tickled her ear, the way his leg dragged her close to him as he cuddled into her. He cared for her. She could feel it. A year ago, it would’ve overwhelmed her. She hadn’t been ready then, but Stephanie was ready now. She had ignored the need in her for too long. She let herself get caught up in her losses and neglected her basic needs. She wanted Mark. Plenty of women dated younger men, why not her?

“Goodnight, beautiful, and thank you for an unbelievable night.”

“Goodnight Mark, and thank you for giving me exactly what I needed.”

He smiled at her and kissed her lips and watched her until sleep took over.

BLURB:

Can a book change your life? Yes, when it's Simplicity, Muriel Sterling's guide to plain living. In fact, it inspires Jen Heath to leave her stressful, overcommitted life in Seattle and move to Icicle Falls, where she rents a lovely little cottage on Juniper Ridge. And where she can enjoy simple pleasures—like joining the local book club—and complicated ones, like falling in love with her sexy landlord, Garrett Armstrong.

Her sister Toni is ready for a change, too. She has a teenage daughter who's constantly texting her friends, a husband who's more involved with his computer than he is with her, and a son who's consumed by video games. Toni wants her family to grow closer—to return to a simpler way of life.

Other women in town, like Stacy Thomas, are also inspired to unload their excess stuff and some of the extra responsibilities they've taken on.

But as they all discover, sometimes life simply happens. It doesn't always happen simply!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
She and Bill Will chatted for a few minutes, mostly about him and how he was saving up to buy a place of his own. “Except I only got about a thousand in the bank,” he said with a shake of the head. “I need to find me a rich woman. Got any money, Jen?” he added with a smile.
“Yeah. Tons. Can’t you tell?”
“Aw, well. There’s more to life than money, right?” He set down his mug. “Let’s get started. I’m itchin’ to try out that machinery.”
She’d already marked off the area where she wanted the garden. “I figure I’ll put it over there,” she said, pointing to a sunny corner of the yard she’d marked off with string and some small yard stakes.
“Okay,” he said with a nod.
She watched, feeling a tingle of excitement, as he let down the tailgate of his truck and pulled out the tiller. Home-grown lettuce and spinach and peas and carrots. This was going to be great.
Bill Will took the tiller over to the future home of Veggie Central, started it, and began to churn up the earth. She should plant sunflowers, too, she thought watching him.
She was so into her garden daydream that it took a minute for her to realize that the tilling had stopped. “I think we got a problem,” Bill Will called.
Had he hit a rock? She hurried over to where he was squatting in front of clumps of grass and sandy soil, examining what looked like some sort of network of pipes. “What’s that?” she asked. Whatever it was, something was wrong with it, she thought, looking at the water gurgling from several that had been severed.
He pushed back his hat and scratched his head. “Well, I’m no expert on stuff like this but if I had to guess I’d say that’s your drain field.”
“Drain field?”
“You know, your septic system. I think we just tore something up.”
A sick feeling landed in the pit of her stomach. “Can you fix it?”
He looked at the mess in front of him and shook his head. “If you need a horse broke or a fence mended I’m your man. This, well, you better call your landlord.”
The sick feeling swelled. “Oh,” Jen said weakly.
Bill Will straightened up. “Sorry to ruin your day Jen, but I don’t think we better till any more until you know where all your drain field is. You don’t want to do any more damage.”
She’d just done more damage ... to her tenant-landlord relationship. Oh, boy.
“You’d better call Armstrong right away,” Bill Will advised.
She could hardly wait.
Her trepidation must have shown on her face because Bill Will threw an arm around her shoulders and gave her a hug. “It’ll be okay. He’s a good guy. He’ll understand.”
Jen wasn’t so sure.
After finishing his shift at the fire station Garrett had gotten his groceries, stopped by his folks, and called his sister in Yakima. That checked everything off his to-do list. Timmy was with his mother – so far so good there – and the rest of the day was now all his.
How to spend it? He could do some work on his place, go for a hike, camp out for a while at Bavarian Brews with his laptop and surf the Net. The possibilities were endless.
His cell phone rang. Oh God, please don’t let it be Ashley.
It wasn’t. But seeing who was calling left him just as rattled as if it had been. An image of a short redhead with freckles danced before his eyes. Jen Heath, a.k.a. Lucy Ricardo the Second. What did she want?
“Hello,” he said cautiously. Every time Jen called it meant trouble for him. Heck, just looking at her was trouble. Because he liked what he saw. And he couldn’t afford to, not if he wanted to stay sane.
“Um, Garrett?”
Something in her tone of voice told him he was going to be sorry he’d taken her call. He answered warily. “Hi Jen. What’s up?”
“Well, I have a small problem.”
Great. Just great.
Review:
I was so excited when I received the opportunity to read and review this book as part of this blog tour. I have read other books in the
Life in Icicle Falls series and really enjoyed them. The Cottage on Juniper Ridge was just as an enjoyable read as the rest of the series.
I loved the concept that everyone is trying to simplify their life after reading a book by Muriel Sterling. Jen Heath  is so darn busy trying to make a living that she is not living her life. She's tried of always working and not enjoying life. She makes a big change and moves from the city to the small town of Icicle Falls. She meets up with the ladies from the book club that have also read Muriel Sterling's book. They end up inviting Jen to their group and including her in the ring of friendship, which I found to be really sweet and one of the things I always enjoy about the small town series.
Jen's landlord is the very handsome but some what cranky, Garrett Armstrong. There is certainly a connection between these two but Garrett fights his attraction to Jen. I really enjoyed watching these two get to know each other and their little humorous exchanges along the way. At times they rubbed each other the wrong way which caused some tension but I found humorous at times.
As some of you know one of the things I love about series books is catching up with friends I have read about in previous books. Shelia Roberts has once again done a good job of catching up us up with some old friends from her previous books in this series.
Over all I really enjoyed this story. I must say that it gave me a few points to think about and I think other readers will find the same thing. Not only is there a strong point to make about life in general, there is some nice romance, strong friendship relationships, and just a really nice story. If you have read the books in this series I think you will enjoy this one. If you have not read the previous books in the series I don't think you would have a hard time reading this as a stand alone book.
I know I always enjoy Sheila Robert's books and I will be looking forward to what ever she has in store for us next.
I was given the opportunity to read and review this book as part of this blog too. As always it has been my pleasure to share my thoughts with you on The Cottage on Juniper Ridge.
Glenn Gould: Sketches of Solitude By: Anne Kaufmann ~Write Now Literary Virtual Book Tour
 Glenn Gould: Sketches of Solitude
By: Anne Kaufmann
Guest Post:
What Inspired Me to Write My Book
Glenn Gould has been with me all of my life. My grandmother had a passion for classical music and started me on the piano when I was five years old. So Glenn Gould was a household name. I believe that as well as Glenn Gould being a phenomenal technical pianist, he was unconventional and inspiring. My grandmother always revered the creative part of music, so she was a loyal follower of Glenn Gould and his outstanding and unique musical interpretations. I heard his name from five years of age on. Of course, we lived north of Toronto, so it was wonderful being in the same city. Once Glenn Gould started his documentaries, he was in our living room on a constant basis. As time went on, I found Glenn Gould an inspiration because he followed his own path; his music touched my mind and heart. Whenever I needed some solace or just joy, Glenn Gould's music was there. His personal courage and professional path intrigued me. I started reading more about him and became fascinated with his films. I just loved watching him play the piano. One day, as I listening to his music, I started to write just short impressions, feelings, and ideas, and before I knew it, it was forming into larger sketches. I then decided that I might turn these sketches into a book for young readers. I thought his life could motivate and inspire children to follow their dreams, to celebrate their individuality and to take courage in their own journey. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole process of writing this book because I was so fond of my subject.
About The Book:
In GLEN GOULD: SKETCHES OF SOLITUDE writer Anne Kaufmann gives us an imaginative glimpse into the world and soundscapes of Canadian icon and music legend, Glenn Gould. It is a series of vignettes or "sketches" of Gould's life based on his own recollections over the years and those of others who knew him. Artist Rudin Koci perfectly augments the poetic prose with his colorful, bold and energetic illustrations. This book will inspire young people of today to nurture their own creativity through art and music.
Dancing With A Devil (Whisper of Scandal #3) by Julie Johnstone ~ Review ~
I have now had the pleasure of reading two books by the talented Julie Johnstone. I have to say that I did not know which I would like better her paranormal romance or historical romance. I have to say I think they are about even. I loved Dancing With A Devil. This story had me completely enthralled from the beginning.
Audrey Cringlewood father is ready to marry her off, however she wants to marry for love. She is sure she has met her love Lord Trent Rutherford. However she has to convince Trent that he is in love with her as well. There is a small problem though. I'm not going to tell you what the problem is because it is a good one. It certainly adds to the storyline.
I really liked Audrey she is willing to do what he has to do to take care of her family. She is a strong brave girl that really is just looking after herself and her family. She has strong deep feelings for Trent and he for her. They just have a few obstacles to over come before they can be together.
There is plenty of drama in this book that certainly had me turning pages quickly. I have not had the pleasure of reading the other books in the Whisper of Scandal series but I had no problem reading this as a stand alone book. I don't think you will either.
I do believe that Ms. Johnstone may very quickly become one of my favorite historical authors. She has a great way of telling a historical romance with a little mystery thrown in to keep my attention. I know I will be looking forward to reading what ever she may have in store for us next. Whether it be historical or paranormal romance I know I'll be looking forward to her next new release.
I was given the opportunity to read this book so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my pleasure to share thoughts with you on Dancing with A Devil
In return for Antonio’s silence—and to protect the town from attracting all manner of darkness—Dante agrees to tell his life story. Without explanation, Dante orders Antonio to meet him at night in the abandoned Cathedral, the site of a former battle that the Church has kept secret for a generation.
Until today.
The Criskindl. Ice Steeds. The Unborn. Saint.
From the Dark Ages’ when Poet-Sorcerers ruled kings, to the Holy Land when a new civilization was rising, to Revolutionary France where love is lost and gained, Father Dante pursues the one responsible for both his master and his mother’s deaths: Black Peter, his brother.
EXCERPT:
From effulgent smoke came forth a dark man of such height that his head grazed the broken frame. Straight jet hair fell to his narrow waist, and from each hip hung a curved, empty scabbard. The flaming scimitars crackled in his gauntleted fists.
Liquid fire burned in eyes that rejected fear. Garbed in shades of black, from hose and metal gloves to chest armor, the intruder moved forward like a shadow stealing across a barren heath. He hovered a dangerous pace from the midwife. And when he spoke, though his breath had the scent of lilacs his voice had the timbre of fine-tuned rage:
"I thank you graceful Lady for your months of natal torture, and I do hope that in time you forgive what will surely cause you terrible grief." His fiery stare fell on the child cradled in the midwife's arms. "I can't tell you how happy I am to see you again. The husk is different." He sniffed the air. "But the vapors, they're yours."
The midwife shook her head, rose from her stool, and fished inside her skirt pockets. Swiftly the intruder brought down one of his scimitars to sever the umbilical cord.
Interview:
Crystal: Today as part of this Bridging the Gap Promotions Book tour I have the opportunity to ask Jennah Scott a few questions. Welcome Jennah, I'm very happy to have you here today. Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?
Jennah: I live in Missouri, with my other half and 8-year-old hellion (she’s the love of my life, but certainly keeps me on my toes. We’ve also got a 12-year-old cat and 3-year-old dog running around the house.
I have been and will always be a Texan. I love cowboys and bad boys. Hockey and rodeo are my favorite sports. Love chocolate and mixed drinks. Please don’t ask me about wine because I’m clueless.  J I’m addicted to tattoos. If asked Coke or Pepsi my answer is Dr. Pepper.  I’m still new to the writing world as this is only my second year with published books.
Crystal:  Do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?
Jennah: My favorite scene is actually the opening of the story when Annaliese is imagining the girls on top of Devil’s Tower and taking in her surroundings.
Annaliese studied Devil’s Tower, awed at the blend of reds and oranges painting the background. She’d read the story of how the rock had formed once more. Images of the Native American legend played out in her mind.
The girls crouched on top of the tower, a bear climbing toward them. Their eyes clenched shut, bodies folded in tight, fear fixed on their faces as they mouthed unheard words. She imagined they prayed for their god to protect them from the animal determined to take their lives.
Annaliese shivered as the wind broke through the wall of trees around her. She pulled her jacket tight and huddled in on herself, not ready to leave yet, despite the falling temperatures as night closed in. She had an idea for a mix of watercolor, oil, and charcoal pictures of a few of the country’s most popular monuments.
Devil’s Tower marked the last stop of the trip from Dallas to Freewill, Wyoming. A friend had told her the Buffalo Bill Two Art Gallery in town held some beautiful works of art. With her new collection in mind, and muse ready to work, she had climbed behind the wheel of her rental car and set out.
Tomorrow, she’d get back on the road for the final six hours of her journey. Until then, Annaliese planned to finish her current sketch and take as many pictures as she could. The colors, shadows, and rock formations were forever etched in her memory, but, later, when she started painting, the photographs would give her a tangible reference as she transferred her recollections of the amazing sights to canvas.
Her sketchbook sat to her left. The trees rustled. Chipmunks and squirrels hopped from tree to tree, chattering to the other wildlife. Off in the distance twigs snapped, from humans or wild animals, she couldn’t determine.
The clean scent of pine and sage from the prayer ties attached to the trees surrounded her. She added pieces of cloth to her mental checklist of details to include. These prayers represented the people of the area. The sacredness of the tower.
Over the years, she’d learned remembered sounds and fragrances added depth to her paintings.
Crystal: Where did you come up with the idea for your The Devil’s Bond?
Jennah:  The Devil’s Bond is a story inspired by travel, the West, and Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. While my family and I were traveling through South Dakota we stopped at a bookstore in Wall Drug and I found a book with stories about each of the women in the show. Something about the women in the book made me want to write my own Wild West Woman. Even though Annaliese is from Dallas originally, her heart belongs in Freewill. And so the story was born. Garrett fit seamlessly into my plans, although admittedly, Annaliese was supposed to be a horse lover rather than a painter in the beginning. She had other plans though. Her passion is painting, so that's what she did. The West spoke to Annaliese. It was so much fun writing her and Garrett's story. I hope readers enjoy their journey as much as I did.
Crystal: What are you currently working on?
Jennah: I’m working on a few things right now. One is a story for an anthology around dreams and nightmares. I’m really stretching outside of my comfort zone with this one and can’t wait to see what readers have to say. I’m also working on a m/m Western that I hope will be included in Decadent Publishing’s fairytale line.
Crystal:  Do you have any special routine that you follow when you are writing?
Jennah: Nope. I’m pretty boring when it comes to routines. Sometimes I listen to music, sometimes I don’t. It really depends on my mood of the day. I will say, when I’m writing sexy scenes I tend not to listen to music. Also, the genre of music I’m listening to changes with each story. One writing habit I have is that I don’t watch TV. I can’t focus at all if it’s on.
Crystal:  Did you have to do a lot of research for this book or any other? If so do you have a fascinating fact that you have learned you would like to share with us?
Jennah: Not really. A lot of research I did was while we were on vacation. I spent the day at Devil’s Tower and made sure my husband took a ton of pictures. So far, the research I’ve had to do is minimal. I try to use places and occupations that I’m already familiar with. Although, that’s changing slowly.
I’m working on an anthology and soon a short story that both have strong BDSM elements, and one is set in Fiji. Both of those will take a bit of research. I’m still trying to convince my other half that we need to take a vacation to Fiji—in the name of research of course.
Crystal:  Who are some of your favorite authors that you like to read?
Jennah: I have so many favorite authors it’s hard to pick a few! My favorites include:  Amy Gregory, Ann Mayburn, C.H. Admirand, Joanna Wylde, Terry Spear and Lorelei James.
Crystal:  Is there any genre you haven't written that you would like to try?
Jennah: I would love to try my hand at writing suspense. However, I’m not sure I ever will. It takes a crafty person to be able to come up with all of the twists and turns to successfully write suspense. :)
Excerpt:
Enjoy the following excerpt for The Devil’s Bond:
The clean scent of pine and sage from the prayer ties attached to the trees surrounded her. She added pieces of cloth to her mental checklist of details to include. These prayers represented the people of the area. The sacredness of the tower.
Over the years, she’d learned remembered sounds and fragrances added depth to her paintings.
“Excuse me, ma’am.” She turned around and found a park ranger behind her, his arms folded across his chest. The gold badge on his left pocket stood out against the green of his shirt.
“Yes, sir?”
“I’m sorry, but the park closes at sunset. I’m going to have to ask you to make your way down the trail.”
“No problem. I’ll just gather my things and head back. It’s so peaceful out here, I’d like to say I lost track of time. But that’s not true. The sunset was too hard to resist. I’m sure you understand.” She picked up her sketchbook, charcoals, and pencils then placed them in their respective spots in her bag. The sketch she’d started wasn’t complete, but she had enough to continue it once she’d settled into the hotel for the night.
The ranger offered a polite smile and held his hand out to help her stand. “I do, ma’am. It’s very peaceful out here. I’ve spent many nights under the stars, escaping the hustle and bustle of life.”
Oh, to see the night sky unhindered by city lights and sounds. “I can imagine. Have a nice evening.”
As Annaliese moved away from the ranger, she caught sight of another man a few feet off and to the left. The trees kept him hidden from her direct line of sight. Long, shiny, black-as-midnight hair fell down his back. From where she stood, only his profile was visible. He had skin the color of hot cocoa; sharp lines from his cheek and jawbone framed his face. He reached overhead and tied a purple swath of cloth to the tree. His lips moved, and she wondered what he was saying.
He tilted his head back and, for a split second, their gazes locked. She jumped, startled at the intense connection snapping between. A desire to remember his features, paint him, enveloped her artist’s senses.
A gruff sound from the ranger pulled her from her desires and daydreams. It was time to go. Freewill, Wyoming awaited her arrival.
