Interview with Tonya Duncan Ellis :

Crystal: Today I have the pleasure of hosting Tonya Duncan Ellis. Welcome, Tonya! I'm so happy to have you here. Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?

Tonya: I was born and raised in Louisville, KY but have lived in the Houston area, a place I love, for the past 14 years. I’m married and have three children. I’ve worked as a journalist and freelance writer but have always wanted to write my own book. I was inspired to start my Sophie Washington chapter book series based on the antics of my own three children and my love for one-of-a-kind Houston surburbia (we see 8-foot alligators and wild boar roaming through our neighborhoods on a regular basis) that I felt would be interesting to many.

Crystal: What are you currently working on?

Tonya: My current project, due to be released this March, is Sophie Washington: Hurricane. In this book Sophie and her family are evacuated from their home in the Houston suburbs when a natural disaster hits the city. She learns lessons about gratefulness and appreciation when a friend is flooded out of her home.

Crystal: Where did you come up with the idea for either your current release or your current WIP?

Tonya: The Snitch came about after my daughter and some of her friends were harassed at school and were more nervous about other kids calling them tattletales than the pain inflicted by the bully. I came up with the idea for Hurricane after I lived through Hurricane Harvey. It was a surreal experience seeing alligators swimming around places where I had played tennis and my neighbors floating down streets in kayaks. Our diverse community pulled together in a way that was heartwarming.

Crystal: Do you have a favorite snack that you like to munch on while writing? If so would you mind sharing what it is with us?

Tonya: I usually don’t eat much when I’m writing, but if I want to nibble I choose popcorn and peanut M & Ms, eating a handful of one and then the other.

Crystal: Do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?

Tonya: My favorite scene in The Snitch is in Chapter 12 “Lights, Camera, Action.” The kids have decided they’ve had enough of Lanie Mitchell’s bullying and plan to secretly video tape her in action on their cell phones so they can turn her in. Sophie has pretty much been a wimp throughout the book but this time she stands up for herself. Things get out of hand and one of the characters ends up getting hurt.

Crystal: When you are not busy writing wonderful stories to keep us lucky readers entertained, what do you like to do? Do you have a hobby?

Tonya: Reading is my main hobby and I also like to do active things such as ride my bike outside and go swimming. A couple of years ago I took up knitting as a hobby with a care team at my son’s school. My family teases me that I’m like a little old lady but it’s really relaxing. We make blankets for people with health issues and this past year donated 100 completed blankets to families who were flooded out of their homes from Hurricane Harvey. A mom who got one of my blankets came to me crying and told me what a comfort it was to her family to cuddle up in the blanket in their upstairs since their downstairs is still under repair. This was so touching to me.

Crystal: Do you have a favorite background noise you like to have going while you write (TV, Music, kids playing)?

Tonya: I hate lots of background noise when I am writing at home. I rarely have music playing because I start singing to it and lose focus, and TV noise gets on my nerves. I’ve yelled upstairs to my kids to be quiet at least five times while I’ve been working on blog tour responses this afternoon. Surprisingly, I’m able to tune out sounds when I write away from home, and I’ve completed parts of Sophie Washington: The Snitch, waiting for my kids to finish team practices and other appointments.

Crystal: Thanks for visiting. It has been a pleasure having you visit today. Can you think of anything else you would like to share with us today?

Tonya: Thanks for having me, and thanks to readers for stopping by to the blog post to learn more about me and my Sophie Washington book series!

BLURB:

There’s nothing worse than being a tattletale…

That’s what 10-year-old Sophie Washington thinks until she runs into Lanie Mitchell, a new girl at school. Lanie pushes Sophie and her friends around at their lockers, and even takes their lunch money. If they tell, they are scared the other kids in their class will call them snitches, and won’t be their friends. And when you’re in the fifth grade, nothing seems worse than that.

Excitement at home keeps Sophie’s mind off the trouble with Lanie. She takes a fishing trip to the Gulf of Mexico with her parents and little brother, Cole, and discovers a mysterious creature in the attic above her room. For a while, Sophie is able to keep her parents from knowing what is going on at school. But Lanie’s bullying goes too far, and a classmate gets seriously hurt. Sophie needs to make a decision. Should she stand up to the bully, or become a snitch?

Excerpt:

“Nice glasses,” smiles Mariama, one of my other good friends in our class. Mariama’s family moved to our neighborhood from Nigeria last year. Some people make fun of her because she dresses different sometimes and talks with an African accent, but she’s really nice.

“Thanks, this is my first time wearing them,” I say. “I was a little nervous this morning.”

“Well, you shouldn’t be because they look really good,” she assures me. A few of our other classmates come through the hall, and no one seems to pay too much attention to me wearing glasses. Seems like it’s not a big deal after all.

“Hey Soph,” calls Chloe, rushing over to join us at the lockers, “those are some cute specs. I may get some with red frames to match my uniform logo.”

“You’re supposed to wear glasses to see, Chloe,” Mariama and I laugh.

“Well, they can be used for fashion, too,” she informs us.

We compare notes on last night’s science homework and grumble about the many review packets Mr. Simpson assigns.

“He must really want us to become astronauts,” Chloe complains.

“Yeah, it took me over an hour to get mine done,” I say.

Suddenly, I hear Mariama whistle under her breath.

“What’s wrong?” I ask.

I see Lanie moving in our direction.

You mean she bothers Mariama, too? I think to myself.

“Hey, Miss Tarzan,” Lanie says, turning toward our friend. “I see you’re wearing that necklace from Africa that you promised me,” she says, pointing at the string of colorful wooden beads my friend is wearing.

Mariama, who is at least a foot shorter than Lanie and probably 15 pounds lighter, starts to shake.

“My mother gave me this necklace,” she says, “and it was a gift from her mother to her.”

“Well, it’s going to be my gift now,” Lanie snarls, reaching out to grab it.

“Why don’t you give it a rest?” says Chloe, moving to block her.

“And who’s going to make me?” Lanie smirks.

I feel my face getting hot under my new glasses. I am so tired of Lanie bothering everybody and spoiling all our fun. If I wasn’t so scared of people calling me a snitch, I would march right down to the principal’s office and tell on this bully.

“Leave her alone, Lanie,” I say through gritted teeth.

“And who’s going to stop me?” she asks.

“Me.”

Lanie laughs and shoves me against the locker.

“You couldn’t stop a flea.”

“Come on, Sophie, let’s just go,” Chloe urges.

But I’ve had enough.

I shove the bully back.

“I said, leave her alone.”

Lanie looks surprised for a second.

“Fine, if she won’t give me her necklace, then I’ll take yours.”

She yanks my precious silver friendship chain from my neck and knocks me to the floor so quickly that my new glasses fall off.

“Sophie!” Chloe and Mariama rush over to help me as the bully hurries off down the hall.

“I hate her!” I reach on the floor for my new glasses and see that the glass is cracked in one of the lenses.

“Oh no!”

What am I going to do now?

Indecent Exposure: The Academy by Tessa Bailey ~ @mstessabailey

Indecent Exposure: The Academy by [Bailey, Tessa]Grab your nice glass of a cold drink, a box of tissues, and settle in to read this incredible story. Tessa Bailey has done a fantastic job with Indecent Exposure. There is drama, secrets revealed, romance, some really hot romance, deep friendship, and family all mixed together for the perfect book.

Jack Garrett is living the wild and crazy life of a playboy who is also in The Academy to become a police officer. There is a lot more to Jack than meets the eye. He has led an interesting life and using his wild ways as an out for his feelings. That is until he meets Katie McCoy.

Katie McCoy is dealing with a few issues of her own. She has come to the states to teach a sharpshooter course and it just so happens to be the same class that Jack Garrett is taking. Neither knows the other is going to be there. It has a bit of tension for the first class.

Jack and Katie are good together. In fact, Katie may be just exactly what Jack needs to get through some of the things from his past and heal. This is where you are probably going to need that box of Kleenex. Jack has been through a lot and it broke my heart to read his story. My heart went out to Jack.

Jack just might be what Katie needs too. I truly enjoyed watching these two get to know each other. The attraction between these two is combustible with little notice.

I enjoyed the interaction with Jack's friends/ roommates/fellow students. They are all there for each other if one needs something they the other two have their back. It is so nice to see friends that are so close that they are family. They are all going to Academy together and working their rear ends off to make it through.

Indecent Exposure is the second book in The Academy series. This book will stand on its own just fine. I have had the pleasure of reading the first book in this series and it is awesome as well. So you may just want to grab up both of these fabulous stories, sit back, and enjoy! It will certainly warm up a winter evening.

I can not wait to see what Ms. Bailey has in store for us lucky readers next. I know I will anxiously be awaiting the next book in this series. I am sure it will be just as fabulous as the first two.

I was given the opportunity to read this incredible book and it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you.

#Review THE ADVENTURES OF MITEE MITE SERIES By David John ~ @MiteeMite

We are thrilled to be hosting David John, author of the children's book series, The Adventures of Mitee Mite! David will be traveling the blogosphere with Pump Up Your Book January 2 - February 28. Leave a comment below to let him know you stopped by!

THE ADVENTURES OF MITEE MITE SERIES
By David John

Review:
I have had the pleasure of reading all five books in The Adventure of Mitee Mite series. Each little book has a fun educational theme with a simple question on one page and the answer to the question on the next page. I think it is a very cute idea and a great way to teach young children in a fun and entertaining way.

The Time Frame Game has some great questions about time. There is also an advanced Time Frame Game book with more questions.

The Measuring Game book actually had a few questions that I found I didn't know the answer to. I learned a few things while reading this book.

The Shape Game ask questions about how many sides each shape has. It's a fun way to get little ones to count the sides and learn the shapes and how they are made.

The Money Game has great questions on how many pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters make up each coin and the dollar bill. I think this would be a great book to help children learn how to save money or to learn how much a toy would cost.

I was captivated by the fun and bright illustrations in each book. The questions are done in a fun way with possible answers around the page. The correct answer follows on the next page so you and your child can see if they got the answer correct. Mitee Mite is an adorable character that appears to have a great time on her adventures in each book. I think the little one in your life will enjoy following along with The Adventures of Mitee Mite. I also think you both will also discover they have learned some fascinating facts along the way.

I was given the opportunity to read these adorable little books and it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you.

BOOK BLURB:

Building on a desire to teach children about time, shapes, measurements, and money, author David John created THE ADVENTURES OF MITEE MITE series. In the same way that many of us learned our ABCs, the book and app (available on Google Play and iTunes) collection helps young readers learn how many seconds are in a minute, the number of sides different shapes contain, and more, using a catchy tune that captures their attention and motivates learning.

Focusing on children from age 3 to 11 years old, THE ADVENTURES OF MITEE MITE book and app series offers its readers a dynamic female superhero, Mitee Mite, as their guide through the often tricky terrain involved with mastering time,  shapes, measurements, and money. In her matching red cape and boots, Mitee Mite, accompanied by her alarm clock sidekick, Terry the Ticker, activates her superpowers by using her manners, respecting others, and accurately answering questions in the games she encounters during her adventures.

The five books in THE ADVENTURES OF MITEE MITE book and app series include The
Time Frame Game
and The Time Frame Game Advanced, which break down seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, and years to teach readers the fundamentals of time. The Measuring Game explores the components of feet, yards, and miles, as well as cups, pints, quarts, and gallons. Mitee Mite teaches kids about currency in The Money Game and dives into a colorful world of triangles, squares, hexagons, and more in The Shape Game. The companion song for this series (available at www.miteemite.com) helps kinds absorb the skills in an enjoyable and interactive way.

The idea for THE ADVENTURES OF MITEE MITE book and app series came about when David was faced with a dire challenge. “One day as I was babysitting my friends’ children, and not having any idea what to do, I made up fun games to help them learn,” David revealed. The goal of the series is to expose children to a variety of lessons in a manner that is fun, relatable, and memorable. David says, “Mitee Mite was created to help give children a head start on the basics of time, measurements, shapes, and money.”

David’s daughter, whom he calls his “Little Mite,” is the inspiration for the main character and the themes of the series. David’s desire to teach his daughter the basic skills featured in THE ADVENTURES OF MITEE MITE book and app series has expanded into the goal of sharing these lessons with other children through his “You Buy, They Read” program. “We plan to give away one book for every one bought to kids in need.” In addition, David will donate $1 for every $2 of the gross sales of apps to teachers “who are going into their own pockets to buy supplies.”

#GiveAway ~ QUEEN MOXIE By Hank Quense

 QUEEN MOXIE
By Hank Quense

I’m happy to welcome author Hank Quense here today as he is on tour with his latest release, QUEEN MOXIE.

Come join in the fun and enter to win one of the wonderful prizes being given away by the author.

First, a summary of the story.

In this humorous tale, it is now ten years since Moxie became Queen of Usca in south-west Britain. A tribe of Picts shatters her peaceful reign by migrating from the
north and occupying territory just outside her border.

Moxie decides to build a fort to help control the wild Picts. To her surprise, she discovers
that the fort has been built on land claimed by the forest fairies. Oberon, the King of the fairies, destroys the fort using magic.

Moxie threatens Oberon with military might. Oberon threatens Moxie with magic. To counter Oberon, Moxie asks Camelot to send Merlin to help her out and Arthur agrees.

Once Merlin arrives, Moxie demands that he confront Oberon and use magic spells to defeat the Fairy King. Merlin isn’t thrilled by the request. Moxie wants him to cast field magic spells, a type of spell casting that Merlin has never been able to master.

The Picts hear about the fort and decide Moxie has become hostile. They determine to attack rather than wait for Moxie to attack them.

Meanwhile, Moxie’s only child, the ten-year-old daughter, Aethelwine, decides she won’t be the next queen, leaving Moxie without an heir.

Tristan, a Knight of the Round Table, has been exiled by Arthur for insulting all the nobles with his songs and is staying in Moxie’s castle. He is working on a play to be
staged in Stonehenge. Tristan hopes the play will end his exile since it praises King Arthur and Camelot.

Faced with threats from the fairies and the Picts, Moxie decides to take on the fairies. Merlin tells Moxie and Oberon they are both idiots for fighting each other when the
real threat comes from the Picts who will be able to conquer both after they fight a battle and are weakened by casualties.

Moxie and Oberon agree to a treaty and combine forces to confront the Picts who have been reinforced by boatloads of warriors.

Can Moxie and Oberon convince the Picts to back down?

And what about Aethelwine?

Is Tristan’s play any good?

EXCERPT:

My foemina? What does that mean? Amazed at the wash of chills ripping up her neck upon each sinfully sexy word wafting across her ear, Makenna locked her knees to keep from melting into a pile of steaming goo. She’d thought him more than stunning while he’d stared up at her window from the street, but being mere inches from him left her befuddled and grasping for the perfect adjectives.

Fallen angel zipped through her lethargic brain, trying to settle and make sense of the breathtaking creature trapping her in the corner. His palm slowly moved away from her mouth, leaving her to fight for something to say or at least release her frazzled emotion on a string of sound. Move, stupid, she silently screamed at her frozen body. Strong fingers quickly captured her jaw as all focus dove to the sensation of his soft facial hair tickling across her cheek and warm, masculine lips covering her own.

Oh my God! He’s kissing me. Why is he kissing me? Despite the shocking realization, Makenna still expected to feel a knife sliding into her gut, not a big palm gripping her ass and pulling her closer. He took ownership of her mouth—skillful, probing, demanding, yet gentle in its execution. Magnificent. Fire shot through her groin upon his continued refusal to release her right fist from the wall, leaving her shaky and weak. She molded to his hard, powerful body, immediately disturbed at the guttural moan rolling up her throat and joining his. Ah God. He tastes so good.

About the author:

A high school English teacher, an author, and a fan of anything pink and/or glittery, Lindsay's the English teacher cliché; she love cats, reading, Shakespeare, and Poe.

She currently lives in her hometown with her husband, Chad (her junior high sweetheart); their cats, Arya, Amelia, Alice, and Bob; and their Mastiff, Henry.

Lindsay's goal with her writing is to show the power of love and the beauty of life while also instilling a true sense of realism in her work. Some reviewers have noted that her books are not the “typical romance.” With her novels coming from a place of honesty, Lindsay examines the difficult questions, looks at the tough emotions, and paints the pictures that are sometimes difficult to look at. She wants her fiction to resonate with readers as realistic, poetic, and powerful. Lindsay wants women readers to be able to say, “I see myself in that novel.” She wants to speak to the modern woman’s experience while also bringing a twist of something new and exciting. Her aim is for readers to say, “That could happen,” or “I feel like the characters are real.” That’s how she knows she's done her job.

Lindsay's hope is that by becoming a published author, she can inspire some of her students and other aspiring writers to pursue their own passions. She wants them to see that any dream can be attained and publishing a novel isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
