#Review ~ One Minute Later by Susan Lewis ~ @susanlewisbooks ~ @WmMorrowBooks

One Minute Later: A Novel by [Lewis, Susan]One Minute Later is the first book I have had the pleasure of reading by Susan Lewis. I have to say she did a fabulous job of grabbing my attention with the first few pages and kept me completely engaged throughout the whole story. I will issue a Kleenex warning on this one.

Vivienne Shager is living a thrilling life. She thrives on being a lawyer, running, spending time with her girlfriends, and living a fast-paced social life. Everything is pretty perfect in her world when it's turned upside down on her birthday. She suffers a heart attack right there in the middle of celebrating her birthday with her friends. From that moment on my emotions were on one roller coaster ride of worry, happiness, and sadness.

Vivi's family surrounds her with love and care. Her Mom, Gina loves her dearly but has a huge secret. Vivi has no idea who her father is and her Mom has never told her anything about him. It's put a strain on their relationship. Her brother Greg is right there to help and to lift her spirits. Her Step-Dad Gil is longer married to her mother but he has always loved Vivi has his daughter and he's there with support and love. Then there is her best friend Michelle. Michelle and Vivi may not have spent much time together lately but that strong bond from childhood is still there.

It's thanks to Michelle and her husband Sam that Vivi meets Josh. Vivi and Josh share an instant connection to each other. I loved watching this relationship form. The love that these two share is beyond anything either of them has felt before and so strong from the beginning.

This story is told in two different points of view. One is Vivi's story and set in the present day. The other story is from Shelley's point of view and spans over many years. There is a connection but I don't want to spoil the story for you.

This is such an incredible story. It has all the makings that add up to one-page turner of a story. There is mystery, drama, deep family connections, strong friendships, and romance.  I strongly recommend grabbing the Kleenex box. I know I had tears rolling down my cheeks a few times through this story.

If you enjoy romance and women's literature stories you are going to love this book. I felt it was a nice combination a great women's literature story and powerful romance story.

Susan Lewis has an easy writing voice that makes the story all that much easier to become engrossed in. This may have been my first book by Ms. Lewis but I know I will certainly be reading more of her work.

I was given the opportunity to read this incredible story and it has been my pleasure to share my thoughts with you.

About Swap

Hailey Hollinger has it all—a great husband, a fantastic career in journalism, good friends…and one hot brother-in-law who won't stay out of her fantasies.

When Hailey was sixteen she thought her boyfriend, Brent, was the best-looking guy around. That was until he introduced her to his older brother, Mike. From that moment on she had the biggest crush on him and he became the star of all her teenage fantasies.

Hailey's all grown up now and has been married to Brent for three years. They have great careers, a nice house—they enjoy life and each other. Everything is supposed to be perfect. Except that pesky little infatuation with her husband's brother has never completely gone away. A crush, by nature and definition, is supposed to be short-lived and should diminish over time. But, unfortunately for Hailey, it hasn't, and it's beginning to mess with what she thinks should be perfection. And, if her life is so great, why does she then find herself groping her brother-in-law in the cab of his truck like some sex-starved teenager? Or the more pressing question yet—why is he groping her right back?

Author Note: This forbidden love, erotic romance story, which has been previously published, is written in first person, and contains cheating/adulterous themes. The material has been updated and reformatted for re-release, with a smokin' new cover, as well as additional content.

Excerpt from Swap:

Looking for any excuse to leave the house, I called Katie and asked her to meet me for coffee. I knew I was putting off the inevitable but I needed more time.

We sat in the coffee shop and talked about her date. I was only half listening.

“Enough about Derek. Did you and Mike get something to eat after the races last night?” Kate asked.

“Yeah.”

“Did your other halves join you, or was it just you and your main squeeze?”

“Just Mike,” I said, playing with the lid on my cup. I almost knocked it over, catching it just in time.

“You okay, Hail? Ya seem a little tense, even for you.”

“I’m great,” I lied, and jumped when my cell phone vibrated where it sat in the center of the table between us. I reached for it, but Kate was faster.

“Mmm, it’s Mike,” she said with interest. “What does good old Mike have to say?”

“Don’t.” I reached across the table. She smirked and held it out of my reach.

“Now I have to know.” She hit the message button and opened his text. “Hails, I love you,” she began in an exaggerated soap opera voice. “You are the only one for me. Dump Brent and marry me.”

I stared at her with my mouth hanging open. She laughed at her joke until she saw the expression on my face. I burst into tears.

“What the fuck’s going on, Hailey?”

I covered my face with my hands. “What does it really say, smart ass?”

“It really reads—Quit putting me off. We need to talk. Call me when you get this or I’m coming to find you.”

Kate moved around to my side of the banquette. She placed her arms around me. “Hailey, what the hell? What have you done?”

“I haven’t done anything,” I defended.

“Then why is Mike all hot and heavy about needing to talk? What happened at the races last night after I left?”

“Nothing happened!” I exclaimed.

“Okay, nothing happened, so you’re a blathering idiot for nothing, then. I know you, Hailey, and I know how you feel about Mike. Did you do something? Something you’re now feeling guilty about?”

“I kissed him,” I whispered.

Her eyes widened. “Well,” she said at length. “That’s not so bad. A kiss isn’t something you can’t recover from.” She took a deep breath. “Just a kiss? On the lips? Did he push you away?”

When I didn’t answer, she continued, “So, he didn’t. Oh, my God! Hailey, for Christ’s sake, give me something here!” She snatched at my hands, trying to get me to look at her. “Was there more than just kissing?” Her wide, accusing gaze burned into me. “What did you do? What did he do? What are you going to do now? What about Brent?”

“I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know!” I whispered harshly. “I don’t even want to think. I thought this was what I wanted.” The skeptics who alleged you couldn’t love two men at the same time, were full of shit. You could. And it was excruciating.

She searched my face. “What are you saying? Are you thinking of leaving your husband?”

“I...” I hesitated.

“Look at me.” Kate used her stern voice, the way she used to in college. “This is not some story in your head.” She scowled. “You have created a whole life with Mike in that overactive organ you have stored under that gorgeous hair. You have to be sure. Be sure this is what
you want and that you haven’t made him out to be that hero in your stories. Make sure he’s worth it before you destroy everything you have with Brent. Sure you bitch and complain about him, but you have a great thing going there. Things we single girls would kill for. If you just want to screw Mike, you’ll just have to suck it up and get over it. You can’t leave your marriage because you are attracted to another guy. It will pass.”

“It’s been ten years, Katie. When can I expect it to wane?”

She rolled her eyes. “See,” she said angrily. “Who uses the word wane? No one but you, writer-girl? You’re just living out your story. Stop it. Stop it right now, before you hurt everyone you love.”

“So, why do you always push me towards him, then, Katie?” I accused. “You’re all for it—teasing me, joking about it, encouraging me to get my time with him, or tempt him into taking dirty pictures of me and such. It was all fun and games, but now all of a sudden, when it might not be all one-sided, now you’re disgusted with me?”

“I thought it was just a fantasy, Hailey. Just a big dumb crush you had on an older guy. In
college I thought it was fun. I guess I didn’t actually realize how serious you feel about him.”

“It’s not just in my head, Katie. I think I love him.” My heart pounded. That was the first time I’d ever admitted it out loud.

“You don’t love him! You love the idea of him,” she scoffed. “Ohhh, Hailey, how do you get yourself into these things?”

She was most likely right. I had to sort out my fantasy from reality. No one could slap me out of it like Kate. She was better than a therapist.

She gave me a squeeze.

“Don’t you ever get sick of saving me from myself?” I asked.

“Naw, that’s what I do. Can’t guide my own life, but I can...” She paused. “Oh shit, Hailey,” Kate said, staring at the door. “He really meant it.”

I wiped my eyes.

“Mike’s here,” she whispered, right before his shadow crossed the table. My stomach cramped. I wasn’t ready for this.

“Hey, Mike,” Kate greeted. “I was just about to get another coffee. Want one?”

“Sure,” he said, not even looking at her. “Thanks.”

Kate vacated the seat, and Mike took it. “I told you I’d come find you,” he said, matter-of-factly, when Kate was out of earshot.

“I wasn’t avoiding you,” I lied.

“You’ve been crying.” His gaze narrowed.
“Did you tell her?”

“No.”

“Then what did you tell her you were crying about?”

“Perhaps my crying has nothing to do with you.”

“I know you better than that, but I’ll play along. Does it have anything to do with your unhappy marriage, then?”

“I never said I was unhappy in my marriage,” I shot back.

“Then why were you rolling around in my truck with me last night?” he gritted out.

“Are you saying you were rolling around in your truck with me last night because you are unhappy in your marriage, Michael?” His jaw ticked but he did not immediately respond, as Kate returned to our table. She placed a steaming mug in front of Mike.

“Sorry guys, gotta go. Got a text from Derek. He wants to meet me for lunch to apologize for last night. Call ya later, Hailey. Nice to see you, Mike.”

I gave her a look—the traitor, leaving me to hash this out with Mike when I had no idea what to tell him.

“You didn’t tell her, huh?” he accused once we were alone.

“I told her I kissed you. I didn’t incriminate you in any way.”

“Nope, no recriminations there,” he retorted angrily.

“It’s not as if she’ll tell anyone.”

“Why can you talk to her but not to me?”

“Are you telling me that you really wish to have this conversation? You are notorious for burying your feelings. Can’t we just leave it alone? You had a few beers and I took advantage of you. It won’t happen again. Do you want me to apologize? Fine. I’m sorry.”

“Well, I’d probably go along with that, if I could stop thinking about it.” He looked around the coffee shop, at anything but me.

“And why is that?” I asked. “If you were so repulsed by rolling around your truck with me?”

“I was not repulsed, and you goddamn well know it.” He finally looked at me. His lips set in a hard line. “And how do you figure you took advantage of me? Because that would imply that you wanted to roll around with me, and that these feelings are not something new for you. It wasn’t just impulse.”

“Are they new for you?” I blurted, before I thought better of it.

He frowned and shook his head slightly, then sent me a questioning stare.

“I mean,” I hurried to explain, “we’ve just been spending so much time together, I guess I just, uh...I don’t know, it was just inevitable that we got too close. And...Brent’s away so much and I guess I just rely on you far too much, and maybe we should just stop hanging out so much, and...”

“You’re rambling.”

“Yeah, thanks for pointing that out. I think we should stop seeing each other.”

“We can’t just stop seeing each other, Hails. That won’t work. In-laws can’t break up.”

“Why not? I think Cheryl and Brent would enjoy it if you and I didn’t spend so much time together.”

“Maybe. But I’m not sure that I would like it.” I watched him, as he struggled to articulate. “I like being with you. I guess I’ve come to rely on you, too.”

My eyes filled.

He sighed heavily. “Okay. We make a pact—right here, right now. No more rolling around in my truck. Or anywhere else for that matter. We keep our lips and our hands to ourselves from now on, and we promise each other it will never happen again.” He stuck his hand out.

I hesitantly took it, remembering how his warm palm had felt skimming over my ribs, lifting my T-shirt, settling around my breast, setting my skin on fire. I couldn’t promise him anything. I still wanted him as much as I always had. No, that wasn’t true, either. Now that I’d had a preview, I wanted him even more.

Excerpt from Besotted:

Regan was just too damn alluring in that dress for him to accept that he couldn’t have her if he wanted her.
He was an idiot. He should have told her years ago. He should have told everyone. Despite the tongue- lashing he was silently giving himself, Tyler was certainly no fool. “The professor” to his friends, he was generally serious and professional. He had the smarts necessary to obtain both an MBA and a law degree, and he was now CEO of LHRE and on hiatus from one of the fastest growing tech companies in the country. He kept his cool in general, but again and again he behaved like an idiot around Regan.
Since that damn frog almost thirty years ago, he had loved no one but Regan. Sometimes they made it work together, like in high school, but most times not. His feelings were unchanged, but something always stopped him from declaring his love and asking her to do the same. This time it was something insurmountable.
And yet Tyler couldn’t stay away. He was the proverbial moth to the flame, flirting with disaster every time he flirted with her. He had promised to stay away, to keep her safe, but the attraction was undeniable. Yep, prize idiot.
Returning to the ballroom after the latest threats, Tyler briefly considered sharing the conversation, coming clean with Regan and perhaps moving their relationship forward. He was at a fork in the road but remained silent, Tyler knew he was on the wrong path but couldn’t summon the will to fix it. Not only were his problems unsolvable, but she was involved with Brandon. Tyler felt hopeless.
He was preoccupied just as Regan accused, but Tyler tried to give Regan the attention she deserved. He failed miserably until Regan suggested they just leave. That got his attention. Who knew when he would hold her in his arms again.
“Come dance with me again. It would be a crime to waste that dress.”
Encircling Regan in his arms, his body responded to her nearness, even as his mind worried over the earlier texts. He was unaware of his hand stroking her back, fingers lightly skimming over her bare skin. He wasn’t thinking clearly when he pulled her close or when he dropped kisses on her hair. He wasn’t paying attention, just acting on instinct, Regan was responding, her breath growing uneven, her hands clinging to his shoulders.

Excerpt from For the Love of Max:

Procrastinating was getting him nowhere. She was either home or she wasn’t. She was either going to kick him off her property or she wasn’t. She was either going to let him in or she wasn’t.
Wiping his damp palms against his jeans, he sauntered up the steps and knocked.
The door cracked, but the safety chain prevented it from opening fully. He glimpsed a veil of long, black hair.
“Maxine?” She squinted. Damn. The sun behind him was bright in her eyes, casting him in deep shadows.
“It’s Dodge. Remember me? I brought you home after the company Christmas party?” After Garth got wasted and abandoned you? Happy to step in, Dodge had driven her home, trying not to look at her gorgeous legs encased by her tight silver skirt and sheer pantyhose. Red-blooded man he was, he’d adjusted himself when she looked away and had done his best to hide his erection when escorting her to the door.
“Wait.” Say something that’ll keep her talking.
“I—”
The door closed, opening a moment later.
Dodge was a sucker for sun-kissed light-brown skin, wavy long black hair, almond-shaped dark-brown eyes, soft cheekbones, and a pert nose. The bangs were new as was the yellowing bruise on her cheek.
Damn.
Ducking her head, Maxine’s hand shot to the bruise.
He gently touched her chin, and when she didn’t recoil, he tipped it, forcing her gaze to his. “The man is an animal. I’m not like him.”
The smile was tentative. “I know.” Soft words, replete with meaning.
Not going to send him away. Yet. But he needed more.
Maxine extended her hand, which he gratefully took. The electric shock shot through him, so strong he expected a blue arc between them.
Her cheeks flushed, her gaze flying to his before lowering. She tried to pull away, but he held tight.

Excerpt:

She pushed to her hands and knees. The pounding in her brain mushroomed into a full-blown, jackhammer assault. With a moan, she sank onto her bottom and grabbed her head in a fruitless effort to keep her brain from exploding. Despite the pain, she needed to get up. Something was wrong. Something was very wrong.

Faint wisps of light seeped through the edges of the window curtains. The distant sound of traffic echoed through the glass. A lamp imbued the room with a soft, rosy glow, revealing a king-size bed. The cover on the bed was a glossy, garish pink, the pillows covered in the same lurid color, the edges trimmed with frilly, black lace.

She rubbed the back of her neck and closed her eyes, but when she opened them again she was still in the unfamiliar room. A battered desk faced the bed, a large, flat screen television on top. The flickering images of a naked, full-breasted woman being entertained by two equally naked men played across the screen.

A wingback chair, covered in black leatherette sat in the far corner where a door was ajar revealing the cracked linoleum floor of a bathroom and the edge of a chipped porcelain sink. A framed diagram of a fire escape route was posted on the back of the other door. A hotel room? She dug her fingers into her temples. Why couldn’t she remember?

#SpotLight ~ Guns For Angels by Viviana Mackade ~ @ViviMackade,

Guns For Angels
By Viviana Mackade

About Guns For Angels:
Ann

My sister was all the family I had. She was taken from me and now, someone wants me dead, too. Not sure why.

I’m sure I’m not going to give my life up, though. I’m not going to let them get away with my sister’s murder.

The new me will try, anyway.

You see, when she was alive I could live in brightness and peace. Now I have to accept the darkness within me. After all, isn’t life about balance? Ironically, the man who can teach me how to embrace the shadows is broken, hopeless, and angry. Mark is also the only one I trust to lead me through my heart’s night, and back into the light.

The one I trust to keep us alive.

Mark

A favor to a teammate: pick up two girls in trouble, take them to the Team’s safehouse. Should have been easy. It was not.

Then someone killed one of my team, one of my brothers. Now it’s personal.

They want me, too.

Even worst, they want Ann. The only person who cut through me, who woke me, who grabbed my hand and guided me back into life one smile at the time.

I’ll be damned if I let them have anything.

Not. One. Damned. Thing.

From NY to sunny Miami, Ann and Mark run into a maze of lie, betrayal, and death, where love is the only, terrifying certainty. And when truth unravels, they will have to risk all to survive.

Excerpt from Guns For Angels:

“You’re afraid.”

“Hell yeah! I’m not a damn cop, Ann. I’m a Marine: I have a mission, I fight, and I win. Now I don’t know who or why I’m fighting. I’m alone and I can’t let anything happen to you. You do the math.”

She took a long, calming breath. “I’m sorry Mark, but what you’ve just said is nothing more than a pile of crap.”

He looked like he would choke. “A pile of…” He ran a hand through his hair, as she’d done the night before, muttering curses under his breath. “Care for an explanation?”

“Sure.”
