Interview:

Crystal: Today as part of this Bridging the Gap Blog Tour, I have the opportunity to interview  Michael Phillip Cash. Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?

Michael:  I am a former marketing executive that now is writing full time. I live on Long Island with my wife and two kids. I love writing both novels and screenplays.

Crystal:  Do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?

Michael: My favorite scene in Stillwell A Haunting on Long Island is when Paul and his children sit down to their first dinner alone and we watch society of the household unravel. I love the kid’s fighting, and Paul’s realization that he is the sole caretaker and must learn to listen to his children to get to know them as individuals.

Crystal:  Where did you come up with the idea for Stillwell?

Michael: I have been to a famous Long Island psychic, not the one of television, another one. It was very real to me and shook the foundations of my own belief system. It made me consider the eternity of love, and how much would we be willing to do for the ones we love. Stillwell is dear to my heart. There is comfort in knowing that love never dies, and our loved ones are around us, whether we see them or not.

Crystal: What are you currently working on?

Michael: I just finished The Hanging Tree  A Novella. It’s a short book I did just for Halloween. It’s a great little story about the power of free will and accepting responsibility for our choices. The whole book takes place under the infamous Hanging Tree in Long Island, where spirits observe a young girl struggling with some of the biggest decisions of her life. I really enjoyed writing this book and I love the characters. It jumps from the fifteenth century, the late 19th century, the early 20th century. Each spirit has secrets that might have played a role in their deaths. People have especially embraced my witch, Goody Bennett.

I also am completing a dystopian space epic called Schism- The Battle for Darracia. It’s a coming of age story about a young prince who must grapple with his fractured society. It’s fun and engaging and a total departure from what I have done in the past. I love stretching myself as a writer.

Crystal:  Do you have any special routine that you follow when you are writing?

Michael: I usually write after the kids go to sleep from seven until two. It’s quietist in the house and my mind seems clearer.

Crystal:  Did you have to do a lot of research for this book or any other?  If so do you have a fascinating fact that you have learned you would like to share with us?

Michael: I write about people, the facts of their lives are really almost just an accessory.  I love writing about real places on Long Island, and taking some local history, then changing it to suit my story. The Hanging Tree is based on a tree on route 107 that had a horrific accident in the early 20th century. It is one of the mostly creepy places I have ever been.

Crystal: Who are some of your favorite authors that you like to read?

Michael: I read most self-  help books.  I love Anthony Robbins, Napoleon Hill, Wallace Wattles. These books inspire me to try new things.

Crystal:  Is there any genre you haven't written that you would like to try?

Michael: I just finished my first Sci/ Fi and I am anxious to see how well it will be received.
