A BEAUTIFUL WILDERNESS
 By DUPE OLORUNJO

Interview:

Crystal: I have the chance to ask Dupe Olorunjo a few questions today as part of this Write Now Literary Virtual Book Tour. Welcome Dupe, I'm so excited to have you here today. Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?

Dupe: I’m a corporate banker by profession; a passionate writer by night and during vacations;  and I am also a pastor’s wife. In church I enjoy working with teenagers, it gives an opportunity to understand and appreciate their fresh perspective on life. All this looks like a handful but God’s grace is ever sufficient. My Hobbies are dancing, singing and movie critique.

Crystal: Do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?

Dupe: Funny enough some of my favourite scenes are actually between Cathy (Keanu’s wife) and Jack her admirer. Cathy is a Christian and unloved at home. She battles with the temptation that Jack presents.  Jack isn’t a main character but I quite enjoyed developing him. I am not done with him yet and will most likely be writing another novel with him as the central character in the future.
Another scene I enjoyed writing was when Keanu at the lowest point of his wilderness experience, hungrily picked up a bowl of beans, ready to eat, but then found another creature had beat him to it. Each time I re-read that scene, I feel sad for him, but realize that sometimes life throws us lemons so we can make some fresh lemonade.

Crystal: Where did you come up with the idea for A BEAUTIFUL WILDERNESS?

Dupe: Early one morning on my way to work, I was stuck in traffic and found myself on the same spot for a whole 20 minutes. The time passed very slowly as I became drawn to a lame beggar settled beside the road, all set up for the morning. Several thoughts filled my mind as I watched what must have been his daily routine for many years in the past and probably for many years to come.
I began to imagine that, in any set of even slightly different circumstances anyone could have been in this man’s shoes; different parents, different country, different side of the town. Then I realized that I am where I am today is just by the grace of God and I became thankful to God.
My imagination ran wide and wild and within those 20 minutes, the story line for this book was created and fully formed in my mind.

Crystal: What are you currently working on?

Dupe: I am working on a new Novel – THE PINK VEIL. Its focuses on the horrors of child abuse. I hope to complete the first draft during the NaNoWriMo in November.
Do you have any special routine that you follow when you are writing?
I find it very difficult to multi task when I am writing. So I try to plan ahead and create hours, days, weeks where I can pay attention and focus on writing alone.

Crystal: Did you have to do a lot of research this book or any other?

Dupe: Not much research for A BEAUTIFUL WILDERNESS because I took time to develop most of the characters mentally.
However, one of my previous Novels, THE AIREGINAN DREAM is political fiction and since I am not in any way a Politician; that took me through years of research.

Crystal: Who are some of your favorite authors that you like to read?

Dupe: My favourite authors are Dee Henderson, Francine Rivers, Karen Kingsbury, Frank Peretti and Tedd Dekker. Apart from their excellent writing styles, their novels always create an emotional connection for me, either to their story as a whole or to one or two of the characters. To various degrees I would read between 60-80% of what these wonderful authors write.
Of these, Francine Rivers Inspires me the most. She doesn’t seem to write too many books but each one is exciting and powerful.

Crystal: Is there a genre you haven't written that you would like to try?

Dupe: Yes, I would like to write at least one Inspirational thriller. I have the story in place already and I hope to embark on that project in the next year or two.
