EXCERPT:
Calliope returned her attention to Bastian, grasping his shoulder with a gentle hand and giving him a small shake. When he didn’t stir, she considered how she could clean the wound without undressing him as he slept. She had never taken off a man’s clothing before, and she hardly wanted her first time to be when he wasn’t even aware of her actions. But, no other options seemed available. She started at the bottom button of his shirt, working her way up with trembling fingers, and spreading the fabric apart when the last of the buttons slipped free.
Her eyes roamed his upper body. While she was supposed to be assessing the extent of his injuries, she couldn’t deny the flash of heat that blasted through her at the sight of his bare skin.
She dipped a washcloth in the basin that Mrs. Widdleworth left on the night table, wringing out the excess water. As she dabbed at the gash near his naval, his vulnerability in that moment struck her in a way she had not expected. After their first encounter, she would have predicted his ego to get in the way, choosing to bleed to death in the cold rather than accept anything from her.
Although he suffered a serious injury, his daughter seemed to remain his utmost concern. Could his earlier ill-temper have been an unusual display? A behavior born out of fear for his daughter’s safety?
Maybe she had been wrong about him.
She pressed her lips together, allowing the notion to sink in as she dropped the bloody fabric off to the side, and proceeded to stitch the wound with shaky fingers. When the task was complete, she picked up a fresh cloth to use as a dressing. Relief washed over her as she inspected the area before covering it up. The slice in his flesh went deep, but not nearly as deep as she initially feared. She positioned the bandage and fixed it in place, her gaze catching a thin trail of hair that started under the center of his chest, following the way it continued lower down his body, and even further yet where it dipped beneath his trousers.
“It’s been a long time since a woman has laid her hands on me,” Bastian said, his voice rough.
Calliope jumped, heat infusing her cheeks. “My apologies if this offends. Marcus doesn’t fare well with blood. I had to care for your injury myself.” Her eyes met his, and to her surprise, no anger seemed to stir there.
“I was only teasing.” He swallowed hard, appearing to bite back the immense discomfort he had to be feeling. “Thank you.”
She inclined her head. “You’re welcome.”
“I shouldn’t have been so terse with you earlier. Yareena is my life, and when I couldn’t find her, well…” He reached for his face, pressing the heel of his hand against his jaw. “I lost my sense for a short while. I apologize.”

#Interview - The Crimson Curse By Melissa J. Crispin

The Crimson Curse
By Melissa J. Crispin

Crystal: I am so happy to have Melissa J. Crispin here today. Welcome Melissa! Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?

Melissa: Hi Crystal, Before we get started, I just wanted to say thank you so much for having me on your blog today! I’m excited to be here. I was born and raised in Connecticut where I still live today. I’m married with two kids, and I work full-time for a software company that builds solutions for people in the finance industry. It’s often challenging to find time to write, but it’s totally worth the effort. I can’t imagine not doing it.

Crystal: What are you currently working on?

Melissa: I have two projects that I’m bouncing between at the moment.
I’m working on Book 2 of my YA fantasy series that’s published with Evernight Teen. I’d give you the temporary title if I had one, but I’ve managed to finish a full first draft and still not come up with a name I like. P.S. – My inability to come up with a title is driving me crazy. Book 1 is called Collide, and I’m trying to come up with a clever one word title for the next installment.
Also, I’m working on a futuristic sci-fi romance where the President’s daughter falls in love with a galactic garbage man. Although, he is really the son of a mobster that has shady dealings with the president, and both main characters find themselves in the middle of all the madness.

Crystal:  Where did you come up with the idea for either your current release or your current WIP?

Melissa: My current release was inspired by a picture prompt for an anthology call by Roane Publishing. I originally wanted to submit The Crimson Curse for consideration in their Masked Hearts anthology, where all the stories somehow had to incorporate a mysterious woman wearing a golden mask. When I looked at the picture, I kicked around ideas why she would hide behind a mask that didn’t involve going to a costume party. I’ve always adored Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, and started to wonder what it would be like if the woman was cursed and disfigured, and needed to find true love to break the curse. The more I thought about the concept, the more it grew on me, and so I went for it.
Unfortunately, I had a devastating personal thing happen right before the deadline, and I was unable to finish it. When Roane put out a call for a new novella line, I took it as a sign to get my butt back to work. I was so happy when they accepted it for publication.

Crystal: Do you have a favorite snack that like to munch on while writing? If so would you mind sharing what it is with us?

Melissa: Most of my writing time is very early in the morning before I need to get ready for the day job. I’m usually too sleepy to be hungry. :) The only thing I usually have with me is a giant cup of coffee.

Crystal:  Do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?

Melissa: My favorite scene in The Crimson Curse is when Bastian’s daughter, Yareena, together with Calliope’s servants, put on a Royal Ball. The vision of Calliope and Bastian dressed in formal attire, enjoying each other’s company and waltzing the night away marks a turning point in their relationship. They hated each other when they first met, and slowly started to come around the longer they spent together. Here, in this scene, a mutual attraction becomes obvious between them.

Crystal:  When you are not busy writing wonderful stories to keep us lucky readers entertained, what do you like to do? Do you have a hobby?

Melissa: One of my main hobbies when I’m not working or writing is reading. I mostly read LOTS of romance, ya, fantasy/sci-fi, and any mixture of the mentioned genres. For one thing, there’s no greater escape than an awesome book. For another, I believe reading widely and often helps to make me a better writer.
Sometimes it’s tough to sneak in the time to read, so I also listen to audiobooks constantly. I seriously heart audiobooks. It’s a multi-taskers dream. Listening to audiobooks when I’m in the car alone or walking the dog allows me to get new stories in while going about my everyday life. How cool is that?

Crystal: Do you have a favorite background noise you like to having going while you write (TV, Music, kids playing)?

Melissa: It depends on the scene. Most times, I opt for silence, but there are a few exceptions. If I’m writing a big battle scene or something that is strongly rooted in a fantasy world, I may put on a Break of Reality album. If you aren’t familiar with them, they are a cello rock band and their music is incredible. I find it inspiring when I need to immerse myself in a different world.
If I’m writing a YA romance scene, I have been known to put on an Ed Sheeran song or two.

Crystal:  Thanks for visiting. It has been a pleasure having you visit today. Can you think of anything else you would like to share with us today?

Melissa: Thanks so much for letting me stop by! I hope that readers will check out The Crimson Curse. At the heart of the story, it is a Beauty and the Beast retelling where the woman is the beast. I thought it would be an interesting spin on the original tale, and I hope that people will enjoy reading it as much as I loved writing it.

Luke nodded.
“Let me get this straight. So, this guy, he can heal your leg, protect you from something that isn’t yet clear to me, and bring you to some otherworldly place, where you’re reunited with your father?”
“Yeah.”
There was that word again.
He pulled his hand out of mine and ran his fingers through his hair. “Well, that’s pretty
damn hard to compete with.”
“Luke, this isn’t a competition. This is my life. He’s already saved me once.”
“And I’ll do it again,” Alec said.
Luke pointed a finger at Alec. “I don’t care what you can do. I don’t like you. You stole my
girl, who’s pregnant with my baby.” Luke stepped around me and got in Alec’s face. “She will always have a part of me in her life.”
Alec slowly shook his head. “Not new news, and for the record, you stole her from me. So,
you don’t get to play that card.”
The tension thickened in the air until the hairs stood on the back of my neck.
“She never said a word to you before all this weird shit started to go down.” Luke poked
Alec in the chest. “You’re a liar.”
“It’s true,” I whispered.
Luke whirled around. “What?”
“Before us. It was him.”
Luke opened his mouth, as if to say something, but snapped it shut. He finally spoke after
a long moment. “You said I was your first boyfriend. Your first kiss. Your first everything with a guy. You lied to me?”
“At the time, I thought that was true. He finds me in my dreams and takes me to Afterlife. That’s how we met. I never even knew he was real. I thought he was a boy in some recurring dream. I never even remembered until I barreled him over in the hallway one day by accident. His touch jarred my memory.”
Luke’s eyes were wild. “Do me a favor. Do not talk about touching him, ever, in my
presence.”
“I’m sorry, Luke. That’s why this is so difficult. I’m only now remembering things that
happened before us. It’s … confusing.”
“You were with him? Actually with him, before me?”
I swallowed.
“We were sort of dating.”
“That’s not what I meant.” A muscle ticked in Luke’s jaw, and realization dawned on me.
“Oh, no. We didn’t.” I cleared my throat. “Not that…”
“I don’t know what you’re so pissed about. You’re the one who got to have a real
relationship with her,” Alec said.
“Shut up. Just shut the hell up.” Luke gently brushed me to the side, leaving him and
Alec staring each other down. “You’re an asshole.”
“Hate me, if you want. Call me whatever you want. But that girl right there?” He pointed to
me. “She needs me. I swore to protect her, and I don’t give a shit about what you think. I’m her best shot at survival. Your baby’s, too. So, next time you get in my face, remember their lives are at stake and that your guns can’t fight off the shit that’s coming.”
“Asshole,” Luke muttered.
“Douche,” Alec said under his breath.
“Stop fighting,” I said from behind Luke’s back.
“You’re a loser. A loser, with no friends and no life, who came in and stole my girlfriend. Even if she chooses you, you’ll have to help her with my baby. Every time you look at our kid, you’ll be reminded of who was there first.”
I took a step outward to try to get between them, but Alec swung before I could, and as
his fist connected with Luke’s face, Luke charged him, sending them both tumbling toward the ground.
Fists flew and grunts sounded in the scuffle as they rolled, each trying to get the upper
hand.
“Stop!” I yelled.
