My Fair Duchess by Julie Johnstone ~ Review ~

Julie Johnstone became one of my favorite authors with the very first book of her's that I read. Since then I've had the opportunity to read more of her work. With each book she just astonishes me with her incredible talent.

I do not always judge a book by it's cover. However, when the story inside is just as awesome as the cover I find I must at least mention how pretty it is. I just loved the cover if I had a print copy of this book it would certainly be one that I would want to display because it is gorgeous!

My Fair Duchess is a great example of Ms. Johnstone's wonderful work. I have to say I was captivated by this book from the very beginning and I had a really hard time setting it down until I found out what in the world could possibly happen.

I instantly formed a bond with Lady Amelia De Vere. Oh my goodness this girl has a way of getting herself into some interesting situations. At times my heart really went out to her. I loved how she is so willing to do whatever it may take to help her brother get out of the situation they are in. She loves her family very much and I admired her greatly for that.

The Duke Of Aversley has dealt with a lot of heartache and embarrassment in his young life. So to deal with the situations he decides to just make the worst reputation for himself that he can. However when he meets Lady Amelia she sees under all that bluster there really is a heart of gold.

I so enjoyed watching Aversley help Amelia prepare for her season. Not only was it fun to watch this young lady, whom was not use to being the center of attention shine. It was a lot of fun watching these two get to know each other so much better. They truly became friends and formed deeper feelings than either thought was possible.

I adored this book and the characters in the book. This is book one of Ms. Johnstone's new series so I can not wait to see who's story she has in store for us next. The one thing I do know is that no matter which character's story she tells next it will be awesome!

If you enjoy a fun historical romance, some drama and suspense, a few steamy scenes, and characters that are a great joy to meet, then you must grab this one now!

I was given the opportunity to read My Fair Duchess so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you on this great story.

Rogue Nirvana by Sally Naylor ~ Write Now Literary Virtual Book Tours

Revised Banner (1)

Crystal: I have the chance to ask Sally Naylor a few questions as part of this Write Now Literary Virtual Book Tour. Welcome Sally! I'm so happy to have you here today. Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?

Sally: Sally Naylor, daughter of a highly decorated WWII combat veteran, FBI agent, and lawyer, and a sweet, stay-at-home, religious, southern belle mother, roamed the world growing up as an “Air Force Brat”. This gypsy was raised with and confused by both the sword and the cross. A series of crises later in life: chronic fatigue, widowhood, breast cancer, in addition to a new love affair, motivated her to engage in this rogue romp to Nirvana as she sorts through the impossible expectations of her conventional middle class upbringing.

And yes, she did attain her own Nirvana but in an unexpected & bizarre manner.

Before she set aside societal conditioning and its inherent promise of Nirvana, Naylor negotiated and ultimately thrived as an independent school English teacher and curriculum developer.  Naylor’s students have had their work featured in many publications and have won numerous writing awards. In addition to teaching creative writing she served as an in-school counselor where she initiated student peer-to-peer counseling, mediation and AIDS Ed training programs. She teaches creative writing and blogs, and enjoys life coaching, interviews, public speaking, and facilitating workshops.

Crystal: Do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?

“As an adolescent, I only had time for God, dogs and square dancing. Having been seduced by hyper-religious friends to join an organization called “Youth for Christ”, I went off the tracks. Does it still exist? I hope not. Its appeal lay in a series of social opportunities, including Bible competitions. So I got to work and memorized huge chunks of that tome and subsequently made a name and created an identity for myself as a Bible wiz kid.

I was saved. I prayed that the Lord strike me dead if I did not fulfill my pledge to be a missionary to Brazil and other extreme covenants.

This did not please my parents. They were losing control. Fortunately for them, I
would soon reach the Presbyterian age of consent, fourteen, and was enrolled in religious classes designed to prepare me for my baptism and first communion. Calvinists do not baptize infants because they believe a child should make this important decision independent of parental influence. A rather lofty concept!

However, in my case it was to remain just that: a concept. The morning of my baptism I remember feeling particularly hypocritical due to my looming adoption of this watered-down, genteel version of the true (Youth for Christ) religion. I can feel John Calvin shudder in his grave at this appraisal.

“Come out this minute, young lady! Do you hear me? This minute,” yelled my father as he banged violently on the bathroom door. I could hear my mother whining, murmuring instructions and occasionally wailing,

 “What will people think?”

from behind the door. I sat on the lid of the very hard toilet seat, regretting my lack of planning. It would’ve been nice to have a book and a cushion in order to pass this time comfortably. Fortunately or not, depending upon your perspective, I was not to be bored long.

After dressing for church, that Sunday morning of my baptism, I had quietly slipped into the bathroom and locked the door, practicing conscientious objection. When my parents discovered my scheme, they were furious, but I sat smugly on the toilet; good had triumphed over evil, until they enlisted my younger brother to pick the lock.  The look I gave him as the bobby pin clicked loudly, and the door opened was the very personification of contempt.  I think I’ve forgiven him; he was merely a pawn, but I’m not entirely sure.

The rest of the story is predictable. I was strong-armed into the car, marched into the church, where I mouthed all the appropriate responses, and took my first communion, thereby betraying what I construed as my immortal soul. I then had the first inklings of awareness that I was creative. Relatively few arrange to morph their baptisms into a kind of damnation.

As a committed Holy Roller I was pledged to “testify for Jesus” and during a
slumber party I once managed to strive all night against the devil and
consequently, saved a friend’s soul.  Unfortunately, her mother took it back the next morning.”

Crystal: Where did you come up with the idea for Rogue Nirvana

Sally: I volunteered for a hot seat experience at a publishing conference. At the time I had a poetry manuscript by the same name waiting to be published. Based on positive feedback from the panelists, I decided to reach a wider audience and re-envisioned the book as a satirical memoir, which I then peppered with poetry from the original manuscript. So it’s a bit experimental.

Crystal: What are you currently working on?

Sally: My first book of poetry, Firebird, a story of regeneration and cancer recovery, published in January 2012 is available on Amazon. For more information visit www.roguenirvana.com  My next book is titled The Estrogen Paradox. I’m also working on a creative writing text, two books of poetry, and a sequel for Rogue Nirvana.

Crystal: Do you have any special routine that you follow when you are writing?

Sally: I loathe routines. When I adopt one, it suits the project I’m working on. I drop it once the book is birthed.

Crystal: Did you have to do a lot of research this book or any other?

Sally: Yes I enjoyed researching quantum physics for my last chapter and found it challenging, but gratifying. I was a bit science phobic before this exploration.

Crystal: Who are some of your favorite authors?

Sally: I love the poetry of Mary Oliver, Richard Blanco, Campbell McGrath and the prose of James Joyce, J.D. Salinger, Anne Tyler, Ellen Gilchrist and Annie Dillard.

Crystal: Is there a genre you haven't written that you would like to try?

Sally: I enjoyed weaving prose and poetry into this satirical memoir. I like to push genre boundaries.  I’ll leave so called straight fiction to others. I find enough fiction in my poetry and memoir to sustain me.

Wicked By Nature by Madison Sevier ~ Review ~

I have a special fondness for stories that include witches. I find witchcraft and magic to be interesting. So when I started reading Wicked By Nature, I was deeply captivated by the witches, the demons, and their really interesting paranormal powers. I have to admit I had some major issues trying to set this book down and I ended up staying up a little later than normal to find out how this book would end.

Selena Barnes has had a rough few years. She has lost her parents, the town that she thought was full of friends has turned against her, she hasn't spoken to her best friend in years, and her fiance’, Shawn Richardson is out of town on business. To top that all off she is trying to pull together the finishing touches of their soon to be wedding. Everything is going wrong for this poor girl.

Then things get worse, I hate to tell you too much but she finds out a few secrets that totally turn her life upside down and sideways. Wow, is really all I can say about where this story line goes. There is so much drama and suspense that I could not help but quickly turn the pages to see what in the world was going to happen next.

One thing I really liked was Selena relationship with her familiar, her cat is funny and so protective of Selena.

The other things I really liked is that when everything starts to fall apart her best friends Kelly and Keith Jacobs step in to help her. They have a really great connections and they are a huge help.

This is the first chance I have had to read any work by Madison Sevier . I have a couple more of her books in my to be read pile and I'm anxious to get to them after reading Wicked By Nature.

If you enjoy stories about witches and paranormal stories you really should check this one out. If you are already a fan of Ms. Sevier then you should hurry and grab a copy of this book.

I was given the opportunity to read this book so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Wicked By Nature.

Natural Lust by Madison Sevier ~ Review ~

Natural Lust by Madison Sevier is a quick and steamy read. This is one of those books that is a quick, fun read and would make a great bedtime story.

Kallie Masters' boss suggest that she take a break away from her job as a reviewer. She has some issues with an author that takes offense of her review of his book. So Kallie takes a weekend getaway to the mountains. When she meets Hank Fogle all kinds of sparks fly. First of all there is anger and then attraction. This relationship makes for interesting moments. There are a few moments of laughter, a steamy scene or two, and a twist that is completely unexpected.

I have had the pleasure of reading Madison Sevier's work before and I like her writing style. If you enjoy a quick steamy read with a little drama thrown in, then I think you will enjoy this story.

I was given the opportunity to read this story so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Natural Lust.

MICHELE WOLFE

Adjusted Headshot
Growing up between the Rocky Mountains and the city of Denver in Colorado, gave me a life-long love of both. I suspect my experiences were similar to others my age in the 70s and 80s; summers in one-piece bathing suits; bicycle riding without a helmet; vacationing in the family station wagon; skiing down the local mountains. I am the youngest of three girls and lucky enough to be supported by friends and a loving extended family.
I loved drama, singing, gymnastics and ice skating. And I was never without a good book, no matter where I went. Soon after finishing college and becoming a teacher, I decided I wanted to explore the world. I took long road trips, spent time at Martha's Vineyard, and fell in love with the ocean and California, which eventually became my home.

Four years after moving to Los Angeles, I discovered two things that changed my life. My husband was the first. We fell in love hard and fast. Twenty-two years later, we are fully, after a lot of hard work, co-dependent and co-evolved, and very happy about both. The second discovery was a passion for teaching adults English as a Second Language in a poor immigrant community in East L.A. I'm still there, too.

My husband and I have two handsome sons, Caleb Justus and Joshua William. They are our pride and joy. Caleb is in the Army and Joshua is finishing high school. And I should mention our 'girl' Sophie, who loves running to and fro on our walks, dancing in the kitchen, her tail-wagging in joy.

Being a busy teacher, mother and wife made finding time to write a challenge. When I started my first novel, there was no space in our little home to write except at the kitchen table. I diligently carved out time on the weekends and eventually took my laptop to coffee shops and writers' groups to finish it.

When writing, I let the story and characters come to me in their own time, in their own way. I am inspired by music and art, which often influence a scene or a conversation in my stories. I hope my writing inspires others and makes people think and feel. And of course be entertained.

I am working on my next novel, also about a work of art, this time a painting at the Museum of Modern Art in Rome.

LYNETTE ENDICOTT

Adjusted HeadshotLynette Endicott grew up in Illinois, met her husband in Western Nebraska, lived 25 years in Kansas where their daughter was born, and has been in Fresno, California since 2000. She has a son-in-law (who lives with her daughter nearby), and has rescued a dog, a bird and three cats. She and Ollie, her terrier mix, volunteer as a team at the local library, where children read to the dog.

At a youth camp when she was 14 the editor and teacher of a writing class challenged her to submit something to his youth magazine. She did and it was the first of 10 articles and stories accepted by the publication over the next few years.

Nothing like front end success to keep her writing! Lynette enjoys reading contemporary romance and speculative fiction and writes both. Her debut book, Starting Over Book One: More Than A Job, and two more books in that series, The Return of Joy and Finding Her Voice are available now. The first three of the Time After Time Saga with Tami Dee are available now, including Animal Instinct, Survival Instinct and Pioneer Instinct. The fourth in the series of six, Protective Instinct, will release in August 2014.

Because she didn't have pets until after her 50th birthday the animals she enjoys find their way into all her books. Usually you will also find a character with a disability as part of the day to day fabric of the story. In More Than A Job, Paige works in services to people with disabilities until she loses her job and starts over. In The Return of Joy, Atlas, the yellow lab, becomes a Therapy Dog. In the Time After Time series animal helpers assist the hero and heroine in all six of the books in the series.

DEBRA PARMLEY

Adjusted Headshot
Debra is a multi genre author born in Columbus, Ohio and raised in Springfield, OH. She has lived just outside Memphis, TN since 1997. Debra attended Marywood University in Scranton, PA and was the first student to win first place in two categories of the Delta Epsilon Sigma Beta Epsilon Chapter writing competition, in creative prose and in informal expository. Her poetry was published in literary journals while attending college. She holds a BA in English Literature. When she graduated she asked her academic advisors which genre she should concentrate on. None of them would advise her because she showed strength in each area. Advice at the time and for many years afterward was to concentrate in one area and to focus on one genre. But only she could decide which one.
In 2012, Debra decided this was not working for her and forged her own path. This meant writing in more than one genre and working on more than one manuscript. She no longer believes in writers block. She believes in finding joy in the act of writing and in allowing her muse to play. For Debra, writing is about joy.

Today she teaches Creative Writing classes locally, passing on what she has learned and finding the joy in teaching as well.

Debra traveled and worked as an independent travel consultant. She has visited thirteen countries. She has worked in banking, newspaper advertising, as recycling cocoordinator for the City of Bartlett, as an office manager, and as a belly dance instructor.

When not writing, Debra enjoys dancing, history, primitive archery and medieval reenactment, travel, yoga and meditation.

It is one of her greatest pleasures to hear from her readers.

A native of Florida with a love of New Orleans, she has the uncanny ability to find humor in most things and would probably kill a plastic plant. She knows this because she's killed bamboo. Twice. As a result, she's not allowed to walk in the gardening department of any store without supervision. She's also not allowed in the card aisle of any grocery without an escort since she'll spend thirty minutes opening cards and laughing for no good reason. She continues to make her home in Florida in spite of the heat and mosquitos and shares her home with two cats. One of them smart, the other not so much.

Jillian grew up on her family's homestead on Washington state, near Carnation, Washington, where she raised cattle to pay for her college tuition, rode horses through the pristine foothills of the Cascade Mountain range and scribbled stories in her spare time.
After earning an English degree from Whitman College (what better way to go through college than to constantly read books?), she traveled, worked in advertising, taught Sunday school and volunteered before becoming a writer.

When she's not hard at work on her next story, Jillian can be found chatting with a friend, stopping for a café mocha with a book in hand, and spending quiet evenings at home with her family.

LARA NANCE

Adjusted Headshot
Lara Nance grew up and lived in many cites throughout the South. She loves to write in a variety of genres, but the basis of all of her stories is a great tale that will take you on an adventure of imagination.
If you want to escape and lose yourself in a novel, you've come to the right place. Choose your genre and settle in to be entertained. From thrilling mysteries and steampunk tales to paranormal romance and adventure, she's willing to explore a variety of compelling stories full of danger and suspense, along with a touch of romance.
Her first paranormal romance, Memories of Murder, won RWA's New England Chapter's readers' choice award in 2012 for Best Paranormal Romance, as well as an award of merit as Best Book from a Virginia Author in the Holt Medallion contest. In 2013, her novel DraculaVille - Discovery in New York, won the Rudy award for best novel with romantic elements.

Lara's newest endeavor is under the name L.J.Nance, a children's book series titled: Lyra's Ocean World. The first book is out now: Lyra to the Rescue. The illustrator is Karen Webb.

Most of Lara's books are in print, electronic and audio format, with others soon to follow.

Having been on the fencing team in college and now living on a sailboat convinces her that she was a pirate in another life, or possibly kin to Errol Flynn... However, due to the unfortunate demise of the romantic pirates of the past, she lives out her fantasies, thrills and adventures in her stories. Lara loves to weave interesting true historical tidbits into her fiction which invite the reader to explore further after the novel is finished.

Currently docked in Norfolk, Virginia (until the wind changes) Lara enjoys living on her sailboat and spends time reading, of course writing, indulging a variety of artistic endeavors, cooking and sailing with her husband, Joe and their Yorkie, Rio.

ANGELA KNIGHT

Adjusted Headshot
I have been writing erotic romance since 1996, when my first novella appeared in Secrets Vol. 2. In June, 2004, Jane's Warlord, my first novel, was published, followed by FOREVER KISS in July, 2004 the anthology HOT BLOODED in September, and MASTER OF THE NIGHT in October. MASTER OF THE MOON, my next book, hit the USA Today list for three weeks, much to my amazement. Since then I've been writing like a lunatic and having a wonderful time.
I've been married to a wonderful man for more than twenty years now. He's a senior investigator with our county sheriff's office. As a result, I know an awful lot of cops, which is one reason I love putting police procedural elements in my fiction. I also spent ten years as a reporter, which gave me a collection of war stories you would not believe.

My husband Mike and I have one son, Anthony, who is in his twenties now.
