EXCERPT:

All the poise and modeling classes were forgotten in the space of a second.

Fernando. Fernando. Fernando. It couldn’t be, not after all these years. She drew in a breath and held it.

He brushed a hand through his dark hair, dampened from the icy weather. “I heard you were back in town.”

She swallowed. How did a man look so put together in this type of weather? Her voice returned and matched her shaking body. “You live in Owanda?”

“I thought I did, although you’re making me question it.” He looked around, a slight smile gracing his mouth. “Remember we lived two blocks from each other?”

Except she’d lived in the double-wide trailer at the edge of a trailer park and he’d lived in a cozy bungalow with white shingles and a red front door. She looked off for a moment, needing to focus on something else, anything else. Grumpy appeared to be sleeping.

“How could I ever forget?” she asked.

Fleeting hurt dimmed his gaze, but the smile remained. “You forgot quickly, actually.” He took a step forward, seemed to think better of getting closer, and halted. “I’ve missed you.” He glanced at the parrot. “Don’t tell me, let me guess. He’s blind.”

“Deaf.”

“Does he talk?”

“No, but sometimes he sings off-key.” She looked pointedly toward the street. “Probably because he’s speechless at the terrible weather.”

Fernando laughed. “It’s not so bad here. Summers are very pleasant.”

KEY Change
Assignment: Romance #3
By Barbara Valentin

Giveaway: $25 Amazon Gift Card. Please use the RaffleCopter below to enter. Remember you may increase your chances of winning by visiting the other tour stops. You may find those locations HERE

~*~*~*~*~*~
Interview:

Crystal: Today I am so pleased to host Barbara Valentin! Welcome Barbara! I'm so happy to have you here today. Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?

Barbara: I’d be happy to! I work a day job to support my husband and five boys and write romantic comedies to stay sane.

Crystal: What are you currently working on?

Barbara:  Key Change is the latest release in my Assignment: Romance series and I’ve already started on the next one that has a planned release of summer 2016.

Crystal:Where did you come up with the idea for for either your current release or the WIP you are working on now?

Barbara:  The idea for my current release came from imagining two very different people in my life getting together and imagining the amazing affect one would have on the other.

Crystal: Do you have a favorite snack that like to munch on while writing? If so would you mind sharing what it is with us?

Barbara:  I try to keep my snacks healthy (fruit or almonds, for instance). Do I need to disclose that they’re usually coated in chocolate…?

Crystal:  Do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?

Barbara: One of my favorite scenes is when Sara, the heroine, returns to the apartment and finds Andrew, the hero, asleep on the couch with a high fever. It brings out her tender side and the affect on him is pivotal.  Here’s an excerpt:

In the soft light coming from the kitchen, his face looked red. As in flushed.
Crouching down, she touched the back of her hand against his cheek and pulled it back almost instantly.
He didn't feel warm. He felt hot.
Getting up, she went into the bathroom. She used to keep a big bottle of Tylenol on the bottom shelf of the medicine cabinet. She opened it slowly and found a different bottle but the same brand.
Great minds...
Shaking two into her hand, she went to the kitchen and filled a glass with water.
She set the glass on the trunk and crouched before him again. Giving his shoulder a jiggle, she whispered his name.
No response.
Next, she smoothed some thick soft hair off his forehead and stroked her fingers through it a couple of times.
I could do this all night long.
Speaking a little more loudly, she called him by name and added, "Wake up. You need some medicine."
At this, his eyes squinted open. With a wince and a groan, he turned on his back. "What time is it?"
"5:30. Come on now. Can you sit up?"
When it was clear he couldn't manage it on his own, Sara pushed him vertical just enough to wedge herself between his back and the arm of the couch against which his head had just been laying.
Propping him up in a sitting position, sort of, she shifted around so his back was leaning against her chest. That way she was able to reach over and grab the glass of water waiting on the trunk. Working from behind him, she raised the two tablets to his mouth with her right hand as his head rested against her shoulder.
God, you smell good.
"OK, here. Take these. They'll get your fever down."
When she felt his mouth open, she pushed them in and raised the glass of water to his lips. Holding his head upright with her left hand, she held the glass in her right, watching over his shoulder so she wouldn't spill it all over him. "Come on now, babe. Drink up."
Oops.
At that, he raised his left hand, tilted the glass up and swallowed.
"Good job."
Switching the glass to her left hand meant letting go of his head, but since she had
to return the glass to the trunk, it was a risk she was willing to take. As she leaned forward and did just that, he turned his body toward her as if aggravated with the interruption, forcing her back against the couch as he snuggled into her like she was a pillow. His pillow.
At least the glass was where it belonged.

Crystal: When you are not busy writing wonderful stories to keep us lucky readers entertained, what do you like to do? Do you have a hobby?

Barbara:  I try to run at least every other day, I love to cook and bake (especially this time of year), and spend time with my family and friends.

Crystal: Do you have a favorite background noise you like to having going while you write (TV, Music, kids playing)?

Barbara:  I really need it as quiet as possible. That might explain why I’m on a first name basis with the librarians at our local library.

Crystal: Thank you for visiting today. It has been a pleasure to visit with you. Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

Barbara:  Thanks so much for having me!

Blurb:

The first thing Sara Cleff, a hard-edged, shower-singing rock music critic, wants to do after following a band on tour is crawl into her nice comfy bed in her well-appointed, optimally located vintage apartment. But before making it home, she learns her roommate-slash-boyfriend has apparently broken up with her while she was away on assignment and sublet their apartment out from underneath her. Ouch! When her
key no longer fits in the lock, the last person she expects to find on the
other side of the door is Andrew Benet, a wickedly gorgeous music director from a nearby church.

Something about the brash music critic strikes a chord with Andrew, and he offers her the chance to stay on one condition—she has to join the choir at his church. While Andrew may hold the lease on Sara's apartment, does he have the key to unlock her heart?

Excerpt:

Up as usual at the crack of dawn, Andrew trudged to the bathroom,
almost forgetting to close the door behind him before he spotted Sara's bangles
on the counter next to the sink. Reaching over, he shut the door and locked it.
Fifteen minutes later, he was showered, clean-shaven, and ready to go,
except he didn't have to be at the church until four-thirty that afternoon.
Unplugging his phone from an outlet in his room, he brought it with him into
the kitchen, transferred Sara's clothes that she had washed the night before
into the dryer and poured himself some coffee. He sat on a barstool, debated
throwing a sweatshirt on over his plain, blue, short-sleeved T- shirt to ward
off the chill, but started scrolling through his email instead.
His eyes, however, kept drifting over to Sara, out like a light on the
sofa sleeper.
While most of her was wrapped in the blankets like a human burrito,
with the sun starting to break through the bare branches of the ancient oak
tree blocking the expansive bay window, he could see her face quite plainly.
Without all that the heavy dark makeup, he noted, she looked younger.
And kinda
sweet, actually.
But then again, she wasn't talking.
Still, he was glad he invited her to stay the night before.
But what
about tonight? And tomorrow night? And the night after that?
While he mulled the possibilities, she rolled over and stretched,
arching her back and groaning as she did. Resuming her curled-up burrito pose,
she opened her eyes and mumbled, "How long have you been sitting there?"
Looking at his watch, he admitted, "About a minute. Or five. Maybe
ten." His cheeks suddenly felt a lot warmer.
With a loud yawn, she sat up. "I slept so good." Patting the
thin mattress with her hand, she added, "So comfy."
The words hung in the air between them.
Sarcasm
before coffee. Great.
Still, the sight of her in his pajama top seemed to lobotomize him. All
he could do by way of a reply was nod.
With a shrug, she added, "Seriously, on a sleeper sofa—who
knew?"
Snap out
of it.
With no small amount of effort, he turned and glanced at the dryer.
"Your clothes should be ready in about twenty minutes."
At that, Sara took a deep breath and yanked the covers back, revealing
two impossibly long bare legs as she flung her feet to the floor.
Knowing full well that the sudden blast of heat he felt was not
delivered by way of the gilded vents along the floorboards, Andrew got up to
check the thermostat on the wall next to the upright piano anyway, mumbling,
"Gotta love old buildings."

Excerpt:

Jace blinked, staring at the woman. Whatever he’d done to earn her hostility, he’d obviously done it well.

“This is your property?”

“My family owns twelve acres. Hunting is restricted on all of it.” Her spine stiffened like a broomstick. Beneath her simple straw bonnet, wisps of dark hair fringed her pretty face. Specks of hazel and gold sparked in her brown eyes, along with an annoying tinge of righteous indignation. “My grandfather makes exceptions in cases of necessity only.” She eyed him from head to toe. “Since there are several eating establishments in town, and you’re clearly not starving, you can pursue your sport elsewhere.”

“In my defense, Miss Sutter, this hunt was necessary.”

“Is that so?”

His business was none of her concern, but the challenge in her skeptical tone got the best of him. “Your elderly neighbor, Mrs. Tremont, is a patient of mine. Her weight has dropped drastically, and her appetite continues to wane.”

Her smug tone faded. “I’m sorry to hear that,” she muttered, looking genuinely distressed.

“The woman has a craving for fresh venison. I apologize for trespassing, but I intend to provide it.”

She lowered her eyes, and Jace couldn’t help enjoying her contrite response.

“Had you not intervened with my deer, I’d have no reason to dally here. On your property,” he added, just for the hell of it.

“Well, don’t let me keep you,” she snapped. “Good luck with Mrs. Tremont.” Her hard look softened again, as did the harshness in her voice. “Please send her my regards.”

With a lift of her chin, she collected her market basket from where it sat beside a log, then hurried away. Jace stared after her, absorbing the view. She held her head high, her stance rigid and aloof. Her frame was small but curvaceous, possessing the perfect measure of female proportions. Ample breasts, narrow waist, pleasing backside.

Of course, one had to get past the bloodstained dress to appreciate what lay beneath, but as a doctor who’d seduced dozens of nurses whose aprons were soaked with far worse, this posed no problem for Jace. Her slender form moved swiftly as she made her way down the path through the field, but her pace was slowing. He detected a slight limp in her gait, though from this distance, he couldn’t be sure.

“Madeline Sutter,” he mumbled, shaking his head. What kind of woman went about pulling arrows from dying deer?

Jace had met some odd people during the month since he’d arrived in town, but he’d yet to meet anyone like Miss Sutter. Dragging his gaze from the fading view of her, he squatted before the patch of blood in the grass where his deer had fallen.

From the amount of blood and crimson color, Jace agreed with Miss Sutter’s assessment of the situation. The animal was certain to bleed to death before getting far. It had to be dead on its feet to have allowed her anywhere near it, let alone remove the arrow. How it summoned the stamina to move on, Jace hadn’t a clue, but he knew it would bed down in dense cover as soon as it could. Like any diligent hunter, Jace was obligated to recover it.

He reexamined the arrow. The hair attached was coarse, dark gray with dark tips, and two or so inches long. This evidence indicated a perfect kill shot behind the shoulder, not in the gut, as the girl had claimed.

BLURB:

Kai Andros’s orders were simple. Get in. Gather the intel on the terrorist organization. Get out.

Then he met her. Mariska. Beautiful. Innocent. Ignorant of her father’s atrocities. And marked for death.

His orders said nothing about saving her. But he did. He went off-mission.

Can a rogue cyborg outrun both Cyber Operations and the terrorists to save the woman he loves?

GENRE:  Sci-fi Romance

~*~*~*~*~*~*~
EXCERPT:

Her father pushed back his chair and patted Janai’s head before rounding on Mariska.

She dropped her gaze to the floor. Her stomach was already there. Show no fear. Show no fear.

“Stand up,” Obido ordered.

She attempted to rise, but her feet tangled in her skirt. R981’s arm shot out as if to keep her from stumbling.

“What are you doing?” Obido glared at the android.

“I am performing my duty and assisting her,” he replied.

“Your duty is to report to me.” Her father confirmed what she’d suspected.

“She was about to fall.”

It sounded like R981 was arguing. The general must have thought too also, because his eyes narrowed on the android, but then he jerked his attention back to her. “Remove your scarf.”

No one had seen her face since she was a child teased to tears by her siblings. It had been a relief to be ordered to wear the veil to spare the sensibilities of others and escape their horrified looks. While bathing, she avoided the reflection glass and its taunting reminder of her ugliness. Stomach clenching into a hard knot, she released the opaque fabric from one side of her headdress.

Her father grimaced, and Janai, who’d never seen her naked face, gasped.

Mariska held her head high and stared straight ahead.

HOLY HELL! KAI Andros almost fell over.  This was what Lamis-Odg considered deformed, ugly? Fortunately, his black contact lenses concealed most of his shock.  Intel intercepted by Cyber Operations had reported the fifth daughter of one of the most infamous terrorists had a “significant facial defect.” Her eight sisters had been married—mated was the term these people  used—but no one wanted her, fearing she would produce hideous offspring.

He hadn’t seen her face until now.

In the genetic game of chance, Mariska had been dealt a royal flush. She was fucking gorgeous.

Don’t gawk! A real android wouldn’t react, but as a cyborg, a red-blooded heterosexual man working undercover as a robot, how could he not?

Excerpt:
Restless, she slipped out of bed and put on her robe. A cup of warm milk always settled her nerves. She made her way to the kitchen, but paused next to the table when she spotted Dimitri standing in front of the bay windows. The snow flurries had picked up, and while she always liked watching snow fall, it was Dimitri himself that riveted her. He wore pajama pants, but no shirt. His arms were crossed over his hard, muscular chest. The man was ripped, with taunt muscles along his back. Elise’s heart tripped at the sight of his body, and her fingers ached to explore him. Her core warmed. She swallowed, her harsh, uneven breathing threatening to give her away. What did this man do to her? He threw her equilibrium into madness.
What was he like? Really like? She had seen hints of his protectiveness. He wasn’t afraid to take action. No doubt he could afford anything he wanted. So why was he alone? Was he a player? Lord knew she did not want to entertain that thought. It just might break her heart.
No, she recalled how quiet he had been on the Metro ride to the hotel, how his eyes had glassed over and taken on a distant look. He knew the same loneliness she did.
Elise sighed and raked a hand through her hair. He must have heard her, because he turned. Concern immediately splayed across his face.
“Elise?” His voice was quiet, yet firm. “It’s two-thirty. Are you all right?”
“I had a dream, so I thought I’d warm some milk.”
A sympathetic smile graced his lips as he walked into the kitchen, stood next to her at the table, and pointed to a pot on the stove. “I do the same when I have a dream that unnerves me.” She nipped at her lower lip. They shared the same odd quirk. Could he be any more perfect?
He reached into the cupboard, pulled out a mug, and picked up the pot from the stove, pouring the warm milk into it. She reached out and took the mug from him. His hand passed over hers. The gesture stoked a gently growing fire within her.
“Thank you,” she said.
