Chapter Two

Monday

Before my gangstah-rap neighbor emptied his AK-47 into his buddy, the most exciting thing to happen in our village was the opening of a new grocery store. The store hired a pianist who played Beatles tunes, no doubt to persuade shoppers to part with their money more easily. My neighbor, rapper King Bling, was helping his fans part with their money too, but the shooting ended all that. Once he made bail, he moved and hasn’t been heard from since.

And so it goes in my little corner of the North Shore, about twenty miles from downtown Chicago. There are benefits. The King, as he’s known to his disciples, gave our cops something to do besides ticket speeders. And the new grocery store gave me the chance to buy prepared dinners so I could dispense with cooking.

Both of which come in handy when I’m producing a video, as was the case now. We didn’t finish the shoot until seven. I raced up the expressway toward home, dropped into the store, and was eyeballing a turkey pot roast—the only one left—when my cell trilled. I fished it out of my bag. 

“Mom, where did you get the shoes?” I heard chatter and giggles in the background.

“What shoes, Rachel?”

“The ones you gave Jackie.” My daughter, Rachel, had successfully, if unbelievably, graduated from college and lived in an apartment in Wrigleyville. Jackie was her roommate. “Everybody thinks they’re awesome.”

Libby Fischer Hellmann left a career in broadcast news in Washington, DC and moved to Chicago 35 years ago, where she, naturally, began to write gritty crime fiction. Twelve novels and twenty short stories later, she claims they’ll take her out of the Windy City feet first. She has been nominated for many awards in the mystery and crime writing community and has even won a few. *

Three curved steps extended from a windowless building like an open hand, a building that matched Sage’s sketch. A dull aluminum rail split the stairway and led to a door covered with riveted metal plates. The front of the place was a sheer wall, a red-brick cliff. No street number on the door. No sign. Just a curved coil of green tubing over the entrance that led to a plain fixture with a stingy bulb.

The alley was quiet, a dead-end valley surrounded by man-made mountains of mortar and clay. Conley stepped on the first stair and the building seemed to hum a slow rush, a dull heartbeat.

“You sure this is the Paladin?” Thompson asked.

“Looks like it.” It has to be. “Ready?” He clasped the frigid rail.

She gave him an arch look and walked past him to the door. Determined. Fearless.

“Wait,” he said, and pulled a wad of paper from his pocket, unfolded it on his open hand, and smoothed it with the other. “Take a last look at Carrie.”

She stood next to him, shoulders touching, and they studied the drawing. Carrie’s chin tilted down and her lifeless hair framed a frightened face. Eyes peered from under furrowed brows. Her name was written at the bottom of the page in flowing letters. Funny how a name under a picture gave it soul.

“We talk to Carrie and no one else,” he said. “Sage says to trust her.”

He stared at the portrait and kept smoothing the page even after it was flat. When he saw Carrie, he’d know, and not just from high cheekbones and a delicate chin. Sage had captured abject hopelessness in the woman's eyes.

He looked up. The hum grew loud. Music blared.

Thompson had opened the door and was stepping inside with one long-legged stride, one stilettoed step.

He pocketed the drawing, climbed the steps, grasped the round knob, held the door.

Abandon hope, all ye who enter.

Michael Walsh attended Boston University, where he became a staffer for the Daily Free Press and earned a degree in journalism. His first professional job was at a public relations and advertising firm, writing press releases that appeared in the Boston Globe, Boston Herald, and New England Journal of Engineering. He later became a technical writer, writing and editing jet engine manuals for General Electric Aircraft Engines. GE relocated him to Cincinnati and Florida, where he currently resides. He’s written and studied fiction for years at BU, the University of Cincinnati, and now Jacksonville, where he won the First Coast Writers Festival short story contest and had work published in the UK’s Twisted Tongue and Askew Reviews. He’s an active member of the Bard Society, Florida’s longest-running writers’ workshop.

Then, the day before the Pirellis were due home, something unexpected came up that needed her immediate attention. On hearing what she thought was the sound of a toilet running she first checked downstairs before heading up to the master suite. Inside the gaudy all gold and marble bathroom she discovered a puddle of water seeping out from inside the extra-long double vanity. Opening the main cabinet doors she saw one of the stainless steel hoses was leaking badly. She tried to tighten the connection but it had no effect. Afraid she might make matters worse, she turned off the valve and hurried downstairs to call a plumber on the approved contact list.
A half hour later Sid Kantor showed up and Maria was immediately intimidated by his off-putting physical presence. Short and obesely overweight with a large shaved head, a Quaker-like beard, and dull, hooded eyes, Kantor reminded her of El Malvado, a cartoon villain that used to terrify her as a little girl in Oaxaca. Because of that and his gruff, unfriendly manner, she quickly sensed he was one of those aggressive white foreigners who only saw Mexicans as workers, never as equals.

Not about to give him the satisfaction of staring at her shapely bottom on the way up the steep winding staircase, she politely stepped aside and gestured for him to lead the way. By the time they reached the second floor landing he was grunting and panting so much she feared he might have a heart attack.

“Are you okay, sir?” she asked with genuine concern.

“Ya, ya,” he muttered, wiping his brow with his shirt sleeve. “It’s dis damn heat.”

Minutes later Maria stood by patiently as Kantor awkwardly maneuvered his way under the sink to remove and replace the faulty hose. When he finally finished he turned the water back on to test it.

“Dat should do it,” he said in a heavily accented, non-American voice. “Let run five minutes to make sure.”

After struggling to get back up on his feet Kantor gestured with the flashlight he’d been using, illuminating the inside of the cabinet.

“You know what behind dere?” he asked, focusing the light on a small pocket door under the sink.

“Behind where?” Maria was confused.

“Dere, dere!” he growled, swirling the light around to emphasize what he was talking about

“I don’t know,” she shrugged.

“Strange. Hah?” He pointed the flashlight at the door again. “Must be something back dere.”

Since Kantor was obviously way too big to crawl through himself, Maria volunteered to take a look while he was still there.

“No time,” he said, tapping on his watch. “Late for next appointment.”

He handed her a business card. “You call if any more problems.”

She promised she would and saw him out.

After he left, she decided to return upstairs to check behind the cabinet to make sure there were no hidden pipes that could be leaking. When she slid open the mystery door, she was startled to discover a secret room. “Dios mío!” she whispered.

Amy MacWilliams Schisler, of Bozman, has been writing all of her life for fun and as a freelance writer.  A graduate of University of Maryland College Park with a Masters of Library and Information Science, Amy has resided in Talbot County for 21 years.  She was employed as a school library media specialist at White Marsh Elementary and Chapel District Elementary and a reference librarian at Chesapeake College.  For the past eight years, she has operated her own computer tutoring service working primarily with senior citizens while spending as much time as possible writing. They had assembled at the door of Sloane’s bedroom when Dr. Marlowe held up his hand.

“She should be sleeping,” he cautioned. “If she is, why don’t you all make yourselves comfortable in the room until she wakes up? She needs her rest, but I have to wake her up gently every few hours. She has until two-thirty or so to sleep, so she’s due to wake up shortly.”

Briony nodded, as did the other girls, and shifted her packages to her other side.

“I’ll wait out here,” said Ed, still puffing slightly. “I can see her after you’ve all had some time with her.”

Dr. Marlowe opened the door.

Sloane was sitting up in bed, awake, a dozen or more folders spread across her bed.

Marlowe rolled his eyes. “You’re not supposed to be working, Sloane. Where did you get those?”

“I’m not telling,” Sloane said, beaming as her friends came in the room. “What are you guys doing here?”

“We thought we might check on you since you just got out of the hospital, two days of which were in the ICU,” Corinne said pointedly. She strode to the bed and bent to her friend, hugging her gently, then stood up and filled her arms with an enormous, tissue-wrapped bouquet.

Sloane pulled back the papers, revealing half a dozen long, thick stems atop which were pointy, elegant blossoms with a fan of red-gold and violet-blue petals, and a larger green-and-rose-colored base.

“Birds of Paradise,” she murmured. “You remembered. Oh, Corinne, thank you.”

“Of course I remembered, after the lecture you gave me during the setup for my brother’s wedding a few years ago,” Corinne said. She sat down on the far end of Sloane’s enormous bed as Grace made her way toward the pillow end. “You said that Birds of Paradise were unique and classy and showed that someone cared enough to have them brought in, unlike roses and carnations and mums, which you can ‘get on every street corner,’ as I recall. As I watched you checking every table arrangement in the reception hall, I noticed how much they look like you, especially the red-gold colors. I also brought six singleton vases, since you told me they should always have their own ‘home.’ ”

Sloane’s eyes filled with tears as Grace bent over to hug her. When the pastor stood up, she opened the bakery box she was carrying.

“These are from MaryBeth Finley,” she said. “She sends her love—she still hasn’t gotten over watching you collapse at Charlie’s when she was waiting on you. She’s still worried it was some kind of food poisoning.”

“I’ve never heard of food—even bad food—causing a brain bleed before,” Sloane said, peering into the box, which was from Pancake Heaven, the other restaurant/bakery where MaryBeth worked. “Oooooo. What are these?”

“Vanilla-strawberry,” Grace said, tipping the box so that Sloane could better see the four puffy, exquisite cupcakes. “MaryBeth said to tell you that they’re vegan.”

Sloane dipped a finger into one and scooped up a swath of fluffy frosting. “I’m not a vegan,” she said as she stuck the tip of her finger into her mouth. “Mmmmm, these are insane.”

“Oh, I told her,” Grace said, straight-faced. “I assured her you have eaten way more meat than the rest of us put together.”

A shocked silence fell in the beautifully-decorated bedroom.

A deep throat rumble occurred in the doorway, from which Dr. Marlowe rapidly disappeared.

“Grace Fuller,” said Sloane, her eyes narrowing, “Reverend Grace Fuller—was that a deliberately dirty comment I just heard coming out of your saintly mouth?”

“Yep,” said Grace.

Sloane raised her hand slowly and Grace high-fived it.
