Interview:

Crystal: Today I am honored to host Teresa Richards. Welcome Teresa! I'm so happy to have you here today. Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?

Teresa: I’m thirty-six years old and my husband and I have five kids. Writing is my outlet and provides me a much-needed distraction from mom-duties. I also enjoy playing the piano, reading, and watching movies. I firmly believe in spontaneous dance parties. They are good for the soul.

Crystal: Do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?

Teresa: Sharing my favorite scene would spoil the end of the book, so I’ll share one of Lindy’s scenes. This one takes place in the 1600’s. It’s when she wakes up in the inn, after the slumber that should have been her last.

A neatly folded, crimson blanket sat beside the wash basin. Though the water was cold, it was still a luxury to have my own basin. After washing my face, I wrapped the blanket around my shoulders and went in search of my father.
A strong, rich scent lured me down the stairs. It was bitter, but also slightly nutty. The front entryway was deserted, as was the sitting room. “Hello?” I called.
I entered the dining area, also deserted, and a woman’s voice rang out from the next room over. The kitchen, I assumed. “How could this be the last of it?” she demanded. “Marsala brought some in less than a fortnight ago!” Though I stood out of sight, I could picture the pots and pans as they clanged in the next room. “You’ll have to go for more.” A chair scraped across the wooden floor. “I need it!”
“Beggin’ your pardon, Ma’am, but the beans are still scarce in these parts. ‘Tis a long trip from Arabia. Mr. Han says ‘twill be another month at least ‘fore more comes in.”
A bang, like the slamming of a door, shook the walls. A menacing voice said, “Milda, coffee is a luxury I’m unwilling to go without. Offer him whatever he wants. I’m quite certain he can procure some.” Another bang. Then, “I’m going to collect the Peas.”
Footsteps approached and Calista, the woman who’d welcomed us the day before, rounded the corner and collided into me. She cried out, a sort of strangled bark catching in her throat. Her hand flew to her mouth and she stood, staring at me.
Another voice called out from the kitchen, “What is it, dear?” Calista’s husband, Theodore, appeared in the doorway, saw me, and cursed. He clamped a hand over his mouth.
The cook followed, carrying a steaming pitcher and heading for the heavy wooden dining table. She maneuvered around Theodore before looking up. She gasped when she saw me and the pitcher slipped out of her hands. It crashed to the ground, splattering its dark brown contents everywhere.
Nobody moved.
The dark, steaming puddles slowly shrank as the precious coffee dripped through the cracks in the floorboards.
I shifted under their scrutiny and drew the blanket tighter around my shoulders. “I’m looking for my father. Do you know where he is?”
The Lady’s lips pressed together in a firm line. A too-tight smile appeared on her face. “Oh, good morning, dear!” She glanced pointedly at the cook, who stooped to pick up the pitcher. Theodore still gazed at me. His wife nudged him and he ducked his head. “I trust you slept well?”
Even though I knew better than to speak my mind and insult my hosts, somehow, I couldn’t stop myself. “I think there’s something wrong with that bed. It was awfully uncomfortable. Full of lumps. I had a terrible nights’ sleep.” My face flushed and I looked down, mortified that I’d answered so candidly.
Calista’s taut smile didn’t waver. “Theodore will tend to it. Don’t you worry, Dear.” She grabbed one of my arms and led me to a chair. “Sit down. Milda will bring you some bread and freshly churned butter.”
“Where is my father?”
“Oh. Rupert. Ahhh… he stepped out.” Her eyes darted to the door. “Said he had to settle some business. You just missed him. Eat up, dear.” She hurried from the room, her husband trailing close behind.

Crystal: Where did you come up with the idea for your current release?

Teresa:  I’m cringing as I admit this but, honestly, the spark that started Emerald Bound was from a dream. In the dream, I had to save a friend who’d been taken captive, and a gemstone under her bed had the power to hold her there. So weird, I know. When I woke up, the gem under the bed immediately reminded me of the fairy tale, The Princess and the Pea. I’ve always loved fairy tale retellings and the idea of twisting up The Princess and the Pea intrigued me because I hadn’t seen it done before. My creative juices went to work and I just couldn’t stop thinking about it. The story unfolded and grew and morphed into something I was so excited about. Seeing it come to life on the page was a ton of fun.

Crystal: What are you currently working on?

Teresa:  I’m working on a YA contemporary suspense novel that I started as soon as I finished Emerald Bound. It’s called Windfall. I’m finishing up my second round of edits, which means it’ll soon be ready for beta readers! As soon as I’m done editing Windfall, I’ll be working on the sequel to Emerald Bound, which I already have outlined. I can’t wait to start!

Crystal: Do you have any special routine that you follow when you are writing?

Teresa:  Sit down, open laptop, and write. J When my kids are all in school (which only happens two days per week since I still have one in preschool), I like to go to the library so I don’t get distracted by other jobs around my house that need doing. I get a ton done when I go to the library. I also get a lot done at night when the house is quiet and I’m the only one left awake. Staying up too late is my fatal flaw, but at this stage of my life, it’s when I do some of my best work.

Crystal:  Did you have to do a lot of research for this book or any other? If so do you have a fascinating fact that you have learned you would like to share with us?

Teresa:  I did a lot of research about life in Scandinavia in the 1600’s for Lindy’s sections, since that’s where her story starts. What they would have worn, what their lives were like, how the villages would have looked, that sort of stuff. One thing I learned that I thought was funny was that when people started using forks to eat (instead of their hands or pieces of bread) early fork-users were look upon with suspicion.

Crystal: Who are some of your favorite authors that you like to read?

Teresa:  I’ll read (and love) anything by Maggie Stiefvater, AG Howard, Brandon Mull and Sophie Kinsella.

Crystal: Is there any genre you haven't written that you would like to try?

Teresa:  I love historical fiction, but I stink at history. So in theory I’d love to write a historical fiction, but might not be able to remember the actual history long enough to write a credible fictional account.

Excerpt:

A part of me died long ago.
It was the part of me that feels, and it was Calista’s fault.
What happened tonight was nothing new—innocent victims welcomed into our home, not knowing they would never leave. I learned long ago I could not help them, so I stopped trying.
But this time something was different. This time I was awake, burning with a gut-wrenching guilt, as the next victims slept downstairs. This time I knew the victims. And they didn’t deserve what was coming.
It had always been hard for me to make friends. I’d been called loner, loser, outcast, and freak.
Even still, I remembered Maggie offering to show me around when I first
transferred to their school. Through her, I met Kate and Piper. The three of
them were always nice to me, while other kids kept their distance and spread
rumors behind my back. I told myself I didn’t care—I wasn’t like them.
But being a loner was lonely.
So tonight when I saw
Maggie and her friends here, something inside me snapped. Or, perhaps it was
the dead piece of me coming back to life. Now I cared desperately about what
was happening in the room below mine.
But there was still nothing I could do.
Calista usually lured in victims from out of town to avoid arousing suspicion. Pregnant ones were a particular favorite—easy prey, she called them. But Maggie and her friends came here all on their own. The opportunity was too good for Calista to pass up.
Everyone thought Calista was my mother, but she wasn’t.
Back in my day, almost four centuries ago, Calista had an alternate method of luring in victims. She and her husband, Theodore, advertised for hired help with their inn. The number of parents willing to sell their daughters into a life of servitude in exchange for a forgiven debt or a clean slate was staggering.
My father was one of them.
By the time my mother found out what he’d done, it was too late. There was no escape. I was bound.
My story was well known in this land, whispered as a bedtime tale to ease children into sleep.
But, just like any other story passed down through time by rumors and idle
gossip, the fragment that survived was woefully incomplete. It began Something like this:
There is rumored to have been (once upon a time, of course) a princess, a pea, and a tower of mattresses.
That much was true, though in actuality it was only one mattress, not twenty. The pea was also real, though most would call it a precious stone—an emerald, to be precise.
The gem that sealed my fate was now in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C.
Calista was furious when she found it missing. She thought I’d stolen it until
she remembered my limits. The identity of the true thief remains unknown.
Even though the emerald is no longer in our possession, we are still bound to it, as it is bound to us. Admirers of the opulent necklace where it rests don’t understand it. Like me, the gem is a prisoner, struggling against its fate.
Even now, centuries later, I don’t understand all the details of what happened to me that night. But it began with a troubled slumber on a bed of enchanted emeralds.

Excerpt:

“You forgot about me, didn’t you?” Before Cat responded, he looked in Jimmy’s direction. “She promised me a dance, but I haven’t seen her since the ceremony.” Tony grabbed Cat’s hand as he spoke. “Sounds like the band is starting up again. What do you say?”
Cat squeezed his hand, but looked at Jimmy. “I did promise him a dance when I saw he came alone.”
“No problem. I’ll call you soon, Cat,” Jimmy said.
It took some effort to swallow down the words on his tongue in response to Jimmy’s statement, but he managed it.
In silence, he led them to an empty spot on the dance floor and pulled Cat as close as he assumed appropriate for the setting.
“What’s the matter, Tony?” Her fingers moved against his neck. “You look mad.”
“I’m fine.” Fine if wanting to rip someone’s head off was fine.
“Are you sure?”
The concern in her voice had him mentally cursing. He didn’t want her digging too deep into his feelings tonight. He didn’t even want to dig too deep into them.
“Positive.”
“Mrs. O’Brien looked so happy today. It’s going to be awhile before I remember to call her Mrs. Larson instead.”
Cat stepped closer, her chest brushing against his. If he lowered his head an inch or two, he could kiss her. While it didn’t appear as if anyone was watching them, he couldn’t take the chance.
“You’re not the only one with that problem. Already tonight, I started to call her Mrs. O’Brien before I caught myself. We’ll all get used to it.”
“Did you see Sean dancing with Charlie earlier?” Cat asked. “He looked miserable.”
“Sean hates dancing. Mia and Charlie ganged up on him.”
“I had a feeling it was something like that.” Cat glanced around before she smiled at him. “I’ve missed you,” she said in a softer voice.
“Could’ve fooled me,” Tony muttered under his breath before he could bite back the words.
Cat’s fingers stopped caressing his neck. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Fuck. How had he let that escape? Now it was out there, and he couldn’t take it back. “Nothing, Cat.”
Without warning, she stepped out of his embrace and headed for the nearest exit. Thankfully, at the same time, Gage Larson finished up his current song and couples exited the dance floor. Tony checked to see who might be watching before he followed Cat out the side entrance.
She waited for him in the hallway. Grabbing him by the hand, she led him down an empty hallway and into the dark coat-check room, closing the door behind them.
“Let’s try again, Tony. What did you mean?”
The unfamiliar jealousy he’d struggled with much of the night clashed with the frustration building inside him. Women didn’t breach his emotional wall, or at least not anymore. Somehow though, Cat managed to put a big crack in it tonight.
“You’ve looked perfectly content all night.” Christ, he sounded like a jealous boyfriend.
Cat’s mouth dropped open, and she blinked. “You’re mad because I was dancing? What did you want me to do when they asked?”
He was entering dangerous territory here, and he knew it. Unfortunately, all the warning bells in his head couldn’t keep his mouth shut.
“Say no. Did you see me dancing with anyone?”
“I couldn’t say no to everyone and then dance with you.” She touched his cheek. “If it makes you feel better, I didn’t want to dance with them.”

Four o’clock will be here way too soon.  I crawl into bed and drift off,
succumbing easily.  My mom walks into my room.  She sits on
my bed and pets my hair.  She is whispering something but I can’t

a busted lip and her left eye is swollen shut.  I know what happened to
her but I ask anyway, “Who did this to you?”  She continues petting my hair
but is much rougher, pulling strands from my scalp.  “You did this to me,

I sit upright, panting.  Beads of sweat make their way down my neck.
There’s a soft tapping at my bedroom door.  I turn my head wildly,
searching my room for any sign my mother was here.  Nothing.  There
wouldn’t be.  She wasn’t here.  It was just a dream.  A bad

Interview:

Crystal: Today I am so pleased to host Barbara Valentin! Welcome Barbara! I'm so happy to have you here today. Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?

Barbara: I’d be happy to! I work a day job to support my husband and five boys and write romantic comedies to stay sane.

Crystal: What are you currently working on?

Barbara:  Key Change is the latest release in my Assignment: Romance series and I’ve already started on the next one that has a planned release of summer 2016.

Crystal:Where did you come up with the idea for for either your current release or the WIP you are working on now?

Barbara:  The idea for my current release came from imagining two very different people in my life getting together and imagining the amazing affect one would have on the other.

Crystal: Do you have a favorite snack that like to munch on while writing? If so would you mind sharing what it is with us?

Barbara:  I try to keep my snacks healthy (fruit or almonds, for instance). Do I need to disclose that they’re usually coated in chocolate…?

Crystal:  Do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?

Barbara: One of my favorite scenes is when Sara, the heroine, returns to the apartment and finds Andrew, the hero, asleep on the couch with a high fever. It brings out her tender side and the affect on him is pivotal.  Here’s an excerpt:

In the soft light coming from the kitchen, his face looked red. As in flushed.
Crouching down, she touched the back of her hand against his cheek and pulled it back almost instantly.
He didn't feel warm. He felt hot.
Getting up, she went into the bathroom. She used to keep a big bottle of Tylenol on the bottom shelf of the medicine cabinet. She opened it slowly and found a different bottle but the same brand.
Great minds...
Shaking two into her hand, she went to the kitchen and filled a glass with water.
She set the glass on the trunk and crouched before him again. Giving his shoulder a jiggle, she whispered his name.
No response.
Next, she smoothed some thick soft hair off his forehead and stroked her fingers through it a couple of times.
I could do this all night long.
Speaking a little more loudly, she called him by name and added, "Wake up. You need some medicine."
At this, his eyes squinted open. With a wince and a groan, he turned on his back. "What time is it?"
"5:30. Come on now. Can you sit up?"
When it was clear he couldn't manage it on his own, Sara pushed him vertical just enough to wedge herself between his back and the arm of the couch against which his head had just been laying.
Propping him up in a sitting position, sort of, she shifted around so his back was leaning against her chest. That way she was able to reach over and grab the glass of water waiting on the trunk. Working from behind him, she raised the two tablets to his mouth with her right hand as his head rested against her shoulder.
God, you smell good.
"OK, here. Take these. They'll get your fever down."
When she felt his mouth open, she pushed them in and raised the glass of water to his lips. Holding his head upright with her left hand, she held the glass in her right, watching over his shoulder so she wouldn't spill it all over him. "Come on now, babe. Drink up."
Oops.
At that, he raised his left hand, tilted the glass up and swallowed.
"Good job."
Switching the glass to her left hand meant letting go of his head, but since she had
to return the glass to the trunk, it was a risk she was willing to take. As she leaned forward and did just that, he turned his body toward her as if aggravated with the interruption, forcing her back against the couch as he snuggled into her like she was a pillow. His pillow.
At least the glass was where it belonged.

Crystal: When you are not busy writing wonderful stories to keep us lucky readers entertained, what do you like to do? Do you have a hobby?

Barbara:  I try to run at least every other day, I love to cook and bake (especially this time of year), and spend time with my family and friends.

Crystal: Do you have a favorite background noise you like to having going while you write (TV, Music, kids playing)?

Barbara:  I really need it as quiet as possible. That might explain why I’m on a first name basis with the librarians at our local library.

Crystal: Thank you for visiting today. It has been a pleasure to visit with you. Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

Barbara:  Thanks so much for having me!

The first thing Sara Cleff, a hard-edged, shower-singing rock music critic, wants to do after following a band on tour is crawl into her nice comfy bed in her well-appointed, optimally located vintage apartment. But before making it home, she learns her roommate-slash-boyfriend has apparently broken up with her while she was away on assignment and sublet their apartment out from underneath her. Ouch! When her

Excerpt:

Up as usual at the crack of dawn, Andrew trudged to the bathroom,
almost forgetting to close the door behind him before he spotted Sara's bangles
on the counter next to the sink. Reaching over, he shut the door and locked it.
Fifteen minutes later, he was showered, clean-shaven, and ready to go,
except he didn't have to be at the church until four-thirty that afternoon.
Unplugging his phone from an outlet in his room, he brought it with him into
the kitchen, transferred Sara's clothes that she had washed the night before
into the dryer and poured himself some coffee. He sat on a barstool, debated
throwing a sweatshirt on over his plain, blue, short-sleeved T- shirt to ward
off the chill, but started scrolling through his email instead.
His eyes, however, kept drifting over to Sara, out like a light on the
sofa sleeper.
While most of her was wrapped in the blankets like a human burrito,
with the sun starting to break through the bare branches of the ancient oak
tree blocking the expansive bay window, he could see her face quite plainly.
Without all that the heavy dark makeup, he noted, she looked younger.
And kinda
sweet, actually.
But then again, she wasn't talking.
Still, he was glad he invited her to stay the night before.
But what
about tonight? And tomorrow night? And the night after that?
While he mulled the possibilities, she rolled over and stretched,
arching her back and groaning as she did. Resuming her curled-up burrito pose,
she opened her eyes and mumbled, "How long have you been sitting there?"
Looking at his watch, he admitted, "About a minute. Or five. Maybe
ten." His cheeks suddenly felt a lot warmer.
With a loud yawn, she sat up. "I slept so good." Patting the
thin mattress with her hand, she added, "So comfy."
The words hung in the air between them.
Sarcasm
before coffee. Great.
Still, the sight of her in his pajama top seemed to lobotomize him. All
he could do by way of a reply was nod.
With a shrug, she added, "Seriously, on a sleeper sofa—who
knew?"
Snap out
of it.
With no small amount of effort, he turned and glanced at the dryer.
"Your clothes should be ready in about twenty minutes."
At that, Sara took a deep breath and yanked the covers back, revealing
two impossibly long bare legs as she flung her feet to the floor.
Knowing full well that the sudden blast of heat he felt was not
delivered by way of the gilded vents along the floorboards, Andrew got up to
check the thermostat on the wall next to the upright piano anyway, mumbling,
"Gotta love old buildings."

Interview:

Crystal: Today I'm thrilled to host Clare James. Welcome Clare! I'm so excited to have you here today. Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?

Clare: Hi Crystal! So nice to be here today. Thanks for having me!! Well, I’m not all that interesting, but here goes. I’m the mom of a 10-year-old boy and my husband and I basically revolve our life around that little guy  :)
We live in Minneapolis, but really aren’t all that fond of the cold! Still, the city is awesome and all of our friends and family are here, so we’re stuck.
I started my career in journalism and then moved into marketing, but I’ve always wanted to write. I fell in love with romance novels in a big way about seven or eight years ago and I’ve been writing full time for the past two years and loving every minute of it.
When I’m not writing, I’m hanging with the family, traveling with my husband and son, and working out whenever I find the time. Oh, and reading! We’re always reading.

Crystal: Do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?

Clare: Well, my favorite scene is a spoiler, but I’ll just tell you that there is so much emotion in Before You Go (the first book in the series). It’s not just between the hero and heroine, it’s the friends and family. Some of my favorite scenes are with Tabby and her father. I think these strong secondary characters, and the roles they play, make for a rich story. You have major highs and lows with this one.

Crystal: Where did you come up with the idea for your latest release?

Clare: So my latest release is the conclusion of the series—Not Without You. This story finds Noah and Tabby two years later, when they’re finding out that falling in love was the easy party. Staying in love is the hard part. I came up with the idea because readers were asking for it and I knew I had to make it as emotional as the first story.  I’ve recently added several more scenes to it, and I’m so excited to hear what readers think!

Crystal: What are you currently working on?

Clare: I have so much going on for 2016: I’m adding some new stories to my Quick and Dirty Series, finishing up my Elite Series with Entangled’s Brazen line, and I’ve just signed a new contract with a publisher for a brand new series and will be sharing that news very soon!

Crystal: Do you have any special routine that you follow when you are writing?

Clare: I would love to have a special routine, but my days are too unpredictable right now, so I just fit it in whenever I can. Lately, that means writing at night when everyone is sleeping.

Crystal: Did you have to do a lot of research for this book or any other? If so do you have a fascinating fact that you have learned you would like to share with us?

Clare: I did a lot of research about sexual assault on college campuses/high schools and the effects of PTSD. I was devastated to learn how many women are assaulted every year. Actually, it was the Steubenville rape case that influenced my first story.

Crystal: Who are some of your favorite authors that you like to read?

Clare: I’ll narrow this down to the romance genre. Otherwise, we’d be stuck here all day! I really love Christina Lauren, Emma Chase, Colleen Hoover, Tiffany Reisz, Samanthe Beck. Gosh, I could go on forever in romance, too :)

Crystal: Is there a genre you haven't written that you would like to try?

Clare:  Yes! I’d love to write a middle grade, and my son is dying for me to write some sort of adventure book. It’s definitely on the list!!

About Before You Go, Impossible Love #1:

**More than 100,000 downloads to date!**

What begins as an experiment turns into more than she ever expected …
Twenty-one-year-old Tabitha Kelly is on a mission as she takes a seat inside the neighborhood pub. Off the beaten path, and far from campus, it’s the perfect place. And when she spots the gorgeous Noah Adler at the end of the bar, she silently says, *jackpot.*
One year ago, Tabby had no need to take such extremes. But after being lured to a party that became the site of the biggest sex scandal to hit her Illinois campus, her perfect life fell apart.
Now, in a new city, Tabby’s convinced she can start over. And though it sounds crazy, she believes a one-night stand is the best way to take control and move on from her past. What she doesn’t expect is the immediate connection she feels to this stranger, or that *he *has a plan of his own.
BEFORE YOU GO is about a chance meeting, an unexpected connection, and a unique romance that survives the worst of situations.

For Jules, her relationship with Foster is getting old. He falls down and she picks him up, but they never move forward. Their occasional hook-ups are no longer enough, and Jules vows that this is her summer to forget Foster and find love. If it were only that easy.

About Not Without You, Impossible Love #3:

Falling in love was the easy part …
Noah and Tabby’s love story wasn’t typical … or particularly romantic. After all, he picked her up at a bar – or maybe she picked him up. Either way, he saw her naked before he even knew her name.
Tabby came to him broken, but determined. And Noah knew how to fix her. It was a meeting of the bodies. A retraining of the mind. A connection that soon infected the heart.
But after two years, Noah’s old tricks aren’t working, and Tabby is shutting down again. This time, he refuses to play games. He wants all of her, or nothing at all.
Not Without You returns to the eclectic neighborhood where Noah and Tabby met, and where they are now discovering that life doesn’t get easier after you leave campus. What began as a sweet story of love and redemption, turns into something dark, intense … and, at times, disturbing. And if they’re not careful, it will destroy them both.
*Not recommended for readers under 18

Book #3 is available for $0.99 until December 13, 2015 at Amazon
