Excerpt:

Annie hadn’t thought she’d ever be warm again, but she was sweating when a coughing fit awakened her sometime around two in the morning. Her ribs felt as if they’d been crushed, her head pounded, and her throat was raw. She also had to pee, another setback in a house with no water. When the coughing finally eased, she struggled out from under the blankets. Wrapped in the scarlet cloak, she turned on the flashlight and, grabbing the wall to support herself, made her way to the bathroom.
She kept the flashlight pointed down so she couldn’t see her reflection in the mirror that hung over the old-fashioned sink. She knew what she’d see. A long, pale face shadowed by illness; a sharply pointed chin; big, hazel eyes; and a runaway mane of light brown hair that kinked and curled wherever it wanted. She had a face children liked, but that most men found quirky instead of seductive. Her hair and face came from her unknown father¾“A married man. He wanted nothing to do with you. Dead now, thank God.” Her shape came from Mariah: tall, thin, with knobby wrists and elbows, big feet, and long-fingered hands.
“To be a successful actress, you need to be either exceptionally beautiful or exceptionally talented,” Mariah had said. “You’re pretty enough, Antoinette, and you’re a talented mimic, but we have to be realistic…”
Your mother wasn’t exactly your cheerleader. Dilly stated the obvious.
I’ll be your cheerleader, Peter proclaimed. I’ll take care of you and love you forever.
Peter’s heroic proclamations usually made Annie smile, but tonight she could think only of the emotional chasm between the men she’d chosen to give her heart to and the fictional heroes she loved.  And the other chasm¾the one between the life she’d imagined for herself and the one she was living.
Despite Mariah’s objections, Annie had gotten her degree in theater arts and spent the next ten years plodding to auditions. She’d done showcases, community theater, and even landed a few character roles in off-off Broadway plays. Too few. Over the past summer, she’d finally faced the truth that Mariah was right. Annie was a better ventriloquist than she’d ever be an actress. Which left her absolutely nowhere.

My Review:

I love the title Heroes Are My Weakness. I certainly enjoy a good romance story along with the heroes and heroines that are brought to life with the words written by talented authors.

Susan Elizabeth Phillips has created a story that is packed full of drama, suspense, romance, humor, tension, a few secrets, and a whole lot of twist and turns that made for one page turner of a story.

Annie Hewitt is broke, homeless, jobless and headed for an island that she really does not want to be on. There are bad memories there for her but it's the only place she has left to stay. So she has packed up her puppets and they are going to do their best to make it through a couple of months at the Moonraker Cottage.

Annie has a lot of emotional baggage that has created some really deep emotional scars. This poor girl has been through the mill and back again. She has recently lost her mother, she lost her job while taking care of her sick mother, and used all her savings to live on. This girl really touched my heart. She has so many problems and no where to go and no one to turn to.

Theo Harp has returned to his childhood home, the Harp House hoping to get a chance to write his next best selling book. The words just don't seem to be filling the pages for him lately. Theo has been through a lot as well. He's lost his twin sister and his wife. Theo has some emotional scars of his own and a some deeply buried secrets from the past.

Annie and Theo were childhood friends but something horrible happened that changed their lives and ruined their friendship. The tension between these two is like a giant boulder just waiting to fall. There is also a deep attraction that they both want to avoid but sometimes attraction is just too strong. There a lot of things that have to be solved and resolved before these two can make a relationship or even a friendship work.

One of my very favorite characters in the book is Theo's housekeeper's little girl Livia. She is a sweet, adorable little girl that has a few problems too. I don't want to tell you too much about Livia. I sure would not want to spoil the story for anyone.  I just adored this little girl and Annie's interaction with her.

The islanders also play a big part in this story. The island is very remote and they don't have access to a lot of things, including medical help or supplies.  The islanders stick together through thick and through thin because they are use to taking care of their own in their own ways. This is a tough bunch that can handle just about anything.

I really enjoyed this story. I have to admit there are several twist and turns that I did not see coming at all. There is a lot of drama and suspense that had me flipping pages just as quickly as I could to see what could possibly happen next. Just when I thought I had it all figured out there was a twist thrown in.

I was given the opportunity to read this story so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Heroes Are My Weakness.

Excerpt:

The three chickens had huddled for safety and shelter beneath a huge linden tree, but the instant Harper and Cole took off, the birds clucked into panic mode and went three different directions like possessed bobble head dolls. Harper went after the cochin that had left her in the grass and caught her in seconds.
“Hah!” She held up the chicken in triumph, only to see Cole with a flapping Plymouth Rock hen.
“Lucky,” he called.
“You keep thinking that,” she replied.
They re-incarcerated the two chickens and turned to the last escapee. This hen, Harper knew, was the oldest chicken in the flock, the only Rhode Island Red, a hen that had been around at least five or six years. She was wily and stubborn and laid a lot of eggs.
“Roxie Red.” Harper said, in the same tone she might have said ‘Lizzie Borden.’
“They all have names, don’t they?” Cole asked.
“He always named them, but I don’t know what they are. Who can tell them apart?  She just stands out, the old, cranky biddy.”
“Don’t you worry your head,” he teased. “Just let me take care of her.”
“Not on your life.”
The ridiculousness of their impromptu game felt a little disrespectful given the reason she and Cole were really here, but Harper couldn’t rein in the streak of temporary insanity she’d obviously caught from the chickens. At last she’d found the release—the relief—she’d wanted.
They chased the crafty old hen for five full minutes, cutting each other off, herding her into corners, cooing softly but then charging when she dodged and bobbed like a running back. Harper swore the old girl was having as much fun as they were. At last she managed to streak ahead of Cole and reach Roxie just as the hen reached the rabbit fencing around her mother’s and grandmother’s huge vegetable garden behind the coop.
“Gotcha!” she cried, and sprang forward.
She tripped and landed on Cole’s arm and his hand covered hers as both of them grasped simultaneously for the scolding Roxie.
“Get away from my bird!” she cried.
“Hands off my chicken,” he replied, his voice high-pitched with mirth.
Roxie flapped easily away, and Harper dissolved into laughter, splayed once again face down on the ground. She lifted her head to find Cole flat on his back gasping for air. He reached across her back, grabbed her arm and rolled her over until she, too, lay on her back, her head cradled on his shoulder.

Jillian Miller likes her job working in the front office for the Seattle Sharks, but lately being surrounded by a constant parade of perfection only seems to make her own imperfections all the more obvious. She needs a change, which takes her into foreign territory: the Sharks’ workout facility after hours. The last thing she expects is a hot, grumbly god among men to be there as witness.

Star linebacker Seth Taylor had a bad day-well, a series of them recently. When he hits the Sharks’ gym to work out his frustration, he’s startled to find someone there-and even more surprised that it’s Jillian, the team owner’s administrative assistant. When he learns of Jillian’s mission to revamp her lifestyle, he finds himself volunteering to help. Something about Jillian’s beautiful smile and quick wit makes him want to stick around. She may not be like the swimsuit models he usually has on his arm, but the more time Seth spends with Jillian the harder he falls.

And as Jillian discovers that the new her is about so much more than she sees in the mirror, can she discover that happiness and love are oh-so-much better than perfect?

Excerpt:

She hurried over to the laptop on the little desk in the kitchen, pulled up Google, and searched on Seth’s name. She sank into a chair while she read. He was six foot four, and she practically weighed as much as he did. Well, not quite, but still. She let out a long sigh. He was two years younger than she was. It also seemed Seth had been busy: He was single. “Very single,” according to one of the most recent fan websites she looked at. In Google Images, she found a series of photos of him with multiple tall, dark-haired women, each more gorgeous than the last.
Jillian shut the laptop lid with an irritated “click”, got up from her chair, and hurried into the bathroom. She’d stood in front of a full-length mirror so many times, but it always showed her the same thing. She wasn’t unattractive, but she could use a little more self-confidence and a lot more toning.  She wasn’t asking for physical perfection, but she’d like to make some changes. If she made a plan, started slowly and kept at it, she’d see a difference.  The biggest changes needed to start on the inside, though. Maybe if she got out a little more, she might meet a guy that was interested in her. Seth was gorgeous, but he wasn’t really in her universe. Jillian went into the kitchen, grabbed a frozen low-calorie dinner out of the freezer, ripped the cardboard lid off, and shoved it into the microwave. Dinner would taste a whole lot better if it was accompanied by half a bag of chips and some Ranch dip. But that wasn’t an option right now. She opened the refrigerator door to look for a fresh vegetable of some type.
She pushed the fridge door shut after a fruitless search and rummaged around in her apartment’s tiny pantry. She located a can of peas. Peas were good. Plus, there weren’t many calories in peas. Maybe she could fill up on them if the diet dinner didn’t cut it.

Jillian’s love-hate relationship with her body and food had started when she was little.  Most of the time, there wasn’t enough to eat. She ended up in a foster home at three years old after her mother died in a car wreck, and she was moved a few times before she entered elementary school. Things got a little better for Jillian when she was placed in a more permanent foster home, but she was still so hungry. No matter how much she ate, she wanted more.  When she was old enough to make her own money, she made sure there was more than enough, and that’s when the problems began. Even more than a diet or a new workout regime, she needed to focus on the great things in her life. She’d build a healthier lifestyle as a result. Even more than a diet or a new workout regime, change from the inside would last a lot longer. She wanted to build on the goals she’d already achieved and reach out for more of the things she wanted in life: A husband. A family. To belong.

R Rated (18 + ONLY Please)

My former marine passes our untidy bed, dips one of his hands in the plastic fishbowl filled with condoms, and heads toward the window.

The curtain-less window.

“It’s daylight,” I squeak. All of my previous window sexual antics were performed at night. I couldn’t view my audience, couldn’t see the faces of the men watching me.

“Tell me you don’t want this.” Hawke challenges me.

“I don’t want this.” I meet his gaze, unable to back down, trusting him to read me as he always does, to know that I do want this.

He chuckles. “You’re such a terrible liar.” He skims his lips over mine. “You crave this. I feel how wet, how hot you are.”

I wiggle, unable to argue, my pussy moist and my nipples hard. “They’ll think I’m a bad girl.” My ass touches cool glass. Anyone looking up at our condo will see my bare bottom flattened against the window.

“They’ll think you’re a very good girl.” Hawke lowers my feet to the floor, sliding my body over his. “You’re obeying your very bad man.” He extends my arms, pressing my hands against the window, and widens my stance, forming an X with my body. “You’re so damn beautiful, sweetheart.”

He steps backward, his gaze sweeping me from my head to my toes, all of me exposed to him, my small breasts, flat stomach, brown private curls, pale legs. I glow, feeling beautiful, wanted, worthy.

“You remain overdressed, Marine.” My voice is husky with need.

“Yes, ma’am.” Hawke pulls his T-shirt over his head, drops it on the floor. I glance down at it, unable to suppress my frown.

“Passion is messy.” He laughs, the muscles in his chest moving with his joy. The wings tattooed over his collarbone flutter, the finely etched feathers tempting me to touch them, lick them.

I don’t dare move. My palms flatten against the glass. Hawke has posed me, silently requesting I remain still, and I will obey my dominant man. I tilt my chin upward. I’m powerful, worthy of his love, his forever. He’s shown me this.

“Your thighs are moist.” Hawke’s smile holds a primitive smugness. “Everyone watching you sees how eager you are for my big cock.”

I quiver. He knows the words I want to hear.

“I’ll give you what you want, soon.” He drifts his hands over my shoulders and along my sides, his calloused fingertips grazing the curve of my breasts. “But not yet.”

I bite on the inside of my cheek, suppressing my moans as he explores the dip at my navel, the sensitive skin over my ribs, learning every inch of me. My nipples ache for his touch yet he ignores them, lavishing his attention on less wanton regions, discovering erogenous zones I didn’t know I had.

Unable to reciprocate, to move, I’m focused on him, on his fingers, his hot breath wafting against my breasts, every caress amplified. Hawke’s slow seduction drives me mad, absolutely crazy. I can’t wait, can’t be as patient as he is. My body demands release.

“Hawke.” I arch my back, offering myself to him, wishing to speed, to guide his efforts. “I need—”

“I know what you need, love.” He leisurely circles my breasts, his sensuous orbits narrowing, narrowing, narrowing until I shake with desire, my bare skin vibrating against the window.

“I know you.”

“You’re not inside me.”

“That’ll change soon.” Hawke extracts a condom package from the plastic fishbowl positioned on his makeshift nightstand. His furnishings are pitiful. In this small way, he needs me. The man has no clue how to spend his money.

“Good.” I cup my small breasts, squeezing, offering them to him. “Because I need you.” When he touches me, we merge into one, and my doubts disappear. I belong with him as I’ve never belonged anywhere else.

“You’re torturing me, love.” Hawke rips the package open and rolls the condom on his rigid cock, his gaze fixed on my nude form.

I spread my thighs, showing him my pink pussy lips and my empty entrance. “Is it you I’m torturing, or me?” I pinch my nipples, teasing both of us, adding a twinge of pain to my pleasure. “Your bite mark has faded.”

“We can’t have that.” Hawke’s eyes gleam as he kneels between my legs. “I want everyone to know you’re mine.” He catches one of my wrists, pulls me upright, places my fingers on his latex-covered shaft.

“I’m yours.” I run my hands up and down his length, savoring the feel of him, his heat, scent, everything. “And you’re mine.”

Hawke rocks into my palms, the tattooed wings over his collarbone rippling, his abs defined, his muscles undulating. He’s powerful and strong and, in this moment, he belongs to me.

I don’t know if he loves me, if he will ever care for me that much or say those precious words and mean them, but I do know how to please him sexually, what he likes and needs.

His desires match mine. I meet and hold his gaze as I guide him toward my entrance. His broad tip stretches me open, my slick pussy easing the exquisite tightness. Hawke pushes me backward into the mattress, as he claims my body. I moan, tilting my hips toward him, and his eyes darken to a brilliant blue, his lips flattening.

“You slay me, sweetheart.” Hawke presses his base against my feminine folds, bracing his physique above mine. “Every fuckin’ time.” He gazes down at me, lust and reverence and something more warming his expression. “Nothing feels as good as your hot little pussy around my hard cock.”

We fit perfectly, custom-made for each other. “I want you all the time,” I admit. He’s a high I can’t get enough of, like finding the perfect pair of designer shoes in a department store’s bargain bin, and even a daily hit of his loving isn’t enough. I need him several times a day. “You touch me and I lose control.”

I wrap my legs around his waist, linking my ankles over his clenched ass cheeks. He sinks deeper and both of us groan, the pleasure divine.

“It scares me sometimes,” I confess, having never experienced anything like this.

“You can lose control with me, Belinda.” Hawke rocks, the leisurely shallow slide in and out, in and out, coaxing our passions higher, feeding the flames inside me. I hold on to his shoulders, moving with him. “I’ll keep you safe.”
