1780

Wealthy Jamaican plantation owner, Harry Carstairs has disappeared – and everyone wants to know where he is…

Celeste Rosington knows her place in society, and while she may not be overjoyed at her upcoming wedding to her detached cousin, Raphael, she nonetheless hopes the marriage will be successful. When Raphael asks her for her help to save Harry, she agrees. But her decision costs her more than she knows…

Celeste’s clandestine visit to Harry’s home is witnessed, and her connection to Harry misconstrued. Harry’s secrets put Celeste into more danger than even Raphael understands, and throws her into the path of the ruthless, cunning, beautiful Lady Busselton and the dissolute, dangerous Lord Peregrine.

Raphael is invested in keeping Harry alive. Lady Busselton is invested in keeping him quiet. Lord Peregrine is invested in anything that staves off boredom. And Celeste is becoming increasingly invested in Lord Peregrine.

After all, what resistance does an innocent young woman have against something so deliciously wicked?

EXCERPT:

‘It’s time to take a turn about the gardens. Come, Celeste.’ With an imperious nod of her head Celeste’s aunt rose and put her hand on her niece’s forearm. ‘You are young and beautiful with the world at your feet, if you only knew how to engineer matters to your own pleasing. Do not make too much of your objections to Raphael. If he’s formed other interests, disregard them. It’s a wife’s duty to turn a blind eye, but do not forget that it also bolsters your own position when can follow your own interests after the line is secured.’

Celeste cast a horrified look at the older woman but was prevented from responding by the arrival of Lady Cowdril, who had left her indoors guests.

‘The weather is smiling on us, ladies. Come, let us walk. Cowdril is with the gentlemen, no doubt settling up after last night. I’ve been assured the damage is not too dire, though my husband declares he’s determined to win back what he lost at the whist table. Not that I have any great hopes on the matter, especially with the arrival of our new guest. Lord Peregrine is a notable player.’

Celeste froze. Lord Peregrine. The brother of the woman Harry Carstairs was to marry? Here? Her heart began to hammer and her throat closed up. She’d never met the gentleman who was considered a prize catch and a notable philanderer, and she never wanted to. Especially not now, for what if his sister had indeed recognised Celeste as the woman who’d rushed into the night with her betrothed, Harry Carstairs?

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Beverley Eikli wrote her first romance when she was seventeen but discovered that killing her heroine on the last page was death to her burgeoning romance writing career.

She became a journalist, occupied for many years with life’s newsworthy - but often, unhappy - events until romance finally trumped after she met a handsome Norwegian bush pilot around a camp fire in Botswana’s beautiful Okavango Delta where she was running a safari lodge for a couple of months.

Unhappily, Beverley was due to return home the following day to marry her Australian boyfriend.

Happily, though, that fell through and after a whirlwind eight-month courtship based on regular 18-page letters between Botswana and South Australia, Beverley returned to live with her handsome Norwegian bush pilot in a thatched cottage in the middle of a mopane forest beside a flood plain of lurking wild animals, marrying her handsome bush pilot in Norway shortly afterwards.

Twenty happy years—and 12 countries later—Beverley is now back in Australia living a more conventional life with her husband, two daughters and a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy the size of a pony in a pretty country town an hour north of Melbourne.

She writes traditional Regency romance as Beverley Eikli and sensual historical romance as Beverley Oakley.

Miss Merton's Last Hope by Heather Boyd~ LUCKY #12? #MFRWHooks

I'm excited to host Heather Boyd  today for a MFRW Book Hook blog hop. There is a nice excerpt below from Heather's just released Miss Merton's Last Hope.

Be sure to visit the other authors links below that are part of this blog hop for more excerpts.

 MISS MERTON'S LAST HOPE
Miss Mayhem Series, Book Three
 by Heather Boyd

~*~*~*~*~*~
Excerpt:
Valentine rubbed his hands together briskly. “All I need next is to see my sister happily married.”
Walter nodded, as he was expected to do when the subject of marrying sisters off came up in conversation. His own sister had married a neighbor and friend so he had plenty of experience in this field.
He considered the lady under discussion. She was lovely in her own way, tall, perfect complexion, a beauty, but she wasn’t the least bit approachable. “A tricky proposition, in your case. How many proposals has she turned down?”
“Oh, eleven, I think it is.”
Walter grunted, surprised by the number. He’d only heard of a handful of local beaus who had been turned down. “That many?”
“Be a friend and don’t spread that about. I’m still hoping for one more who might be acceptable before we get to unlucky number thirteen.”
Walter shook his head, unable to fathom why Miss Melanie Merton was so damn particular about choosing a husband. He was acquainted with a few of her former suitors and they were all quite decent sorts and intelligent enough to please even her father. None had possessed a great fortune or a title. “Maybe number twelve will suit.”

~*~*~*~*~*~
Blurb:

MMLH_DC200Over the years, Melanie Merton has used every trick and ruse to repel overeager gentlemen callers without ever revealing the real reason she won’t say yes to an offer of marriage. When neighbor Walter George jumps to her defense against slurs cast by suitor number twelve, he also pries into her past—uncovering the circumstances around a tragic loss in her childhood and her aversion to being touched by anyone. But even protective Walter must be kept at a distance for his own good, because despite a growing attraction between them, Melanie must deny him too.

Unlike other men his age in Brighton, Walter George hadn’t considered Melanie Merton for a wife because he was convinced he’d never have a chance to impress his haughty neighbor. But that was before he understood her better, before he uncovered why she kept friends and suitors alike at bay. The right husband could restore the woman he sees into some semblance of the fun-loving child of his memory, but would Walter stand a chance or become just another unlucky suitor?

Excerpt:

“I don’t care if you’re meeting the Pope, lady. I’m due to pick up a young lady in twenty minutes.”
Vic had been planning this for weeks—it wasn’t his fault that Ms. Jones was obviously used to flying by the seat of her pantsuit.
“I’ll flip you for it.”
“Flip a coin?”
“Well, I certainly can’t flip your body weight.”
His heart stuttered a beat as he conjured a mental image of her trying to flip him, tangled in silk sheets, her long legs wrapped around his waist. No, she couldn’t flip him, but it would be fun as hell to let her try.

BLURB:

Ronnie Jones is busy trying to juggle the challenges of a new construction business along with the demands of being a single mother. She’s surrounded by sweaty construction workers all day. She’s not easily impressed with men. Especially not with cocky Vic Romano. From the moment the ex-con walks into her office looking for a job, he rubs her the wrong way.
All Vic Romano needs is a break. He’s served his time and he’s ready to work towards a new beginning. He has his sights set on the foreman job at Three Sisters Construction. Unfortunately, he gets off on the wrong foot with co-owner, Ronnie Jones. His hopes for a fresh start are dashed before he can even get his steel-toed boot through the door.
When fate intervenes and their paths cross again, Ronnie realizes she may have misjudged Vic. The fact that he’s damn sexy and he makes her panties melt doesn’t hurt either. Every time the two get together, the sexual tension is hotter than fireworks on the 4th of July. Vic is confident he can break through Ronnie’s tough exterior, but Ronnie will have to look past the mistake Vic made five years ago to appreciate the man he is today.
Is this a disaster waiting to happen? Or could it be the blueprint for love?

EXCERPT:

Telor surveyed my room with a sad resigned smile, stopping to look at my pictures, running his hand over one of the many porcelain dolls on a shelf next to my dresser. I wondered what he was thinking, or if he would tell me the truth if I asked. The urge to comfort him was almost unbearable. Walking quietly over to him, I wrapped my arms around his middle and pulled him to me, resting my head on his back.

“What’s the matter?” I asked.

“Nothing,” he answered, though his voice was far away. He might have heard the question, but he wasn’t listening.

“Liar,” I whispered. “Tell me.”

“Are you and your brother close?” he asked.

“We were. He’s dead,” I answered. I haven’t actually said that out loud for a long time. People were liars—it didn’t get easier. As much as it hurt to talk about Ollie, it hurt to watch Telor yearn for his lost ones more.  Ones he never really got to mourn. “He and my dad died in a car accident when I was eight. Oliver was only seventeen; he was nine years older than me.”

“Your mum?” he asked, his voice had gotten thicker. “She’s still around?”

I let out a short bark of humorless laughter. “She’s still alive. But my mother has been gone for a long time. When they died, she drowned her sorrow at the bottom of any bottle she could find. I remind her of the family she lost, so she can barely stand to look at me.”

Man at Work by Chanta Rand ~ Has this ever happened to you? ~ #MFRWHooks

I'm excited to host Chanta Rand today for a MFRW Book Hook blog hop. There is a nice excerpt below from Man at Work. Have you ever been in this situation? What did you do? Any chance a handsome prince was behind you to help out?

Man at Work
By Chanta Rand

~*~*~*~*~*~
Excerpt:

She’d have to put something back. But what?  She needed the nails, the leveler, and the three dozen chrome cabinet handles. She had a kitchen full of refinished cabinets waiting for an extreme makeover.
Just as she was debating whether or not to keep the circular saw, a deep baritone sounded behind her. “Allow me to help, pretty lady.”
When Candace turned toward the source of the voice, her expression of gratitude died in her throat. Dark brows and lashes as thick as fringe framed a sexy pair of chestnut colored eyes that boldly scanned her from the toes of her fresh pedicure to the tops of her threaded eyebrows. The fact that they were attached to the most devastatingly handsome face she’d seen in a long time didn’t hurt.  Her benefactor had a smooth bald head and full lips that she imagined were well-versed in providing hours of unbridled pleasure.
Unfortunately, the five star review ended there.  Not even the man’s square jaw and bulging biceps could detract from his disheveled appearance.  Splatters of white paint liberally dotted his clothing from the collar of his well-worn black t-shirt to the tips of his dingy steel-toed boots. Maybe she could have appreciated his chiseled physique if not for the ripped and dusty jeans encasing his muscular thighs.
She was not being rescued by Prince Charming, but by the enchanted frog instead.“No thanks,” she declined his offer. “I can’t allow you to pay for me.”“You can pay me back when you have dinner with me tonight.”

~*~*~*~*~*~
BLURB:

Real Estate Agent, Candace Jones is looking for man who can work it in the boardroom as well as the bedroom. What she's not looking for is a man with paint on his jeans and sawdust under his nails. That's why when she meets handsome Gabe Hunt at a local hardware store, she doesn't give him the time of day.

Millionaire, Gabe Hunt is captivated by Candace's full curves and sassy attitude. He wishes she would look beyond his beat up truck and rough exterior. He's more than just a fix-it man, but he keeps his true identity a secret from Candace, hoping she's not just another gold digger.

When Candace finds herself in need of Gabe's help to secure a lucrative contract, she learns he's not the average man at work.

Rise of a Queen by Chanta Rand ~ Sneak Peek ~ #MFRWHooks

I'm excited to host Chanta Rand today for a MFRW Book Hook blog hop. Check out the sneak peek below from Rise of a Queen. Then visit the other authors links below that are part of this blog hop for more excerpts.

Sneak Peek from Rise of a Queen:

1040 C.E. Kingdom of Ghana, West Africa
Wagadugu Empire

Nabeela guzzled from the goblet of wine in her room. Maybe it would give her courage for the loathsome task ahead of her. The fermented liquid slid down her throat and winded is way through her knotted entrails to her empty stomach. Good. The concoction would take effect sooner without any remnants of the wedding feast lining her belly. She had not been able to eat a single morsel, despite her mother’s half-hearted attempts to get her to do so. This was no cause for celebration. Not when she’d just married a man old enough to be her father. Indeed, possibly old enough to be her grandfather, had he lived.

Her new husband, Hakim, had no problem eating. Earlier, he’d shoveled massive amounts of food into the entrance of the seemingly bottomless pit that served as his mouth. Nabeela grimaced recalling how his sausage-like fingers had stuffed shanks of braised lamb past his thick lips. His gluttonous appetite had earned jests and ribald comments from his troops. She’d contained her disgust as she watched him shove everything on his platter into his mouth. Errant crumbs escaped, only to be captured in the deep folds of his sumptuous robes.

He was a repulsive pig.

And she was forever tethered to him through marriage.

~*~*~*~*~*~

BLURB:

A dead husband. An unconsummated marriage. She needs an heir. Any man will do.

1061 AD. A sprawling empire rich in gold, resources, and military might dominates West Africa. It’s The Kingdom of Ghana, and it’s at the height of its power.

Twenty-year old Nabeela is grappling with her own power struggle. In order to save her younger sister from their step-brother’s clutches, Nabeela agrees to marry a repulsive African prince and bear him an heir. However, her plans are waylaid when tragedy strikes on her wedding night—her new husband dies—without consummating their marriage.

She must find a replacement to impregnate her immediately. Any man will do—including a drunken soldier her servants find naked taking a bath in a neighboring village. Nabeela holds him captive and coerces him into having sex with her—stealing the one thing he can never get back—his seed.

What she doesn’t know is the soldier is Rafan, Commander of a warring tribe’s royal army, and one of her family’s arch enemies. Eager for revenge, Rafan tracks her down once he’s released. But when these two reunite, they realize their lust for each other is far greater than their disdain.

Enamored by Nabeela’s beauty and bravery, Rafan makes her an offer of marriage, and the promise to help her become queen. He convinces her that they are stronger allies than enemies. Even though they share a commitment to unite, there are others who are determined to destroy them and their plans, including the one person Nabeela would have never suspected. In the end, she’s is forced to choose between her passion and her ambition.

Excerpt:

He glanced at her silhouette. She stood beside him quietly, a tear streaking her pale face, one silver line visible against the cold wintery night.
“Will you dance with me?” Abaddon said, turning her back to face him.
Ally spoke with her body. She shivered as she turned to him, reaching out and lacing her fingers through his.
Abaddon responded by pulling her close against him, removing his hands from hers so he could wrap them around her, holding her tight and praying for the courage to see his task through.
The Seraph told him, told him what he must do. In his broken mind, the pieces lay jagged and strewn, but he was putting them together, regaining the memories he’d lost through the blinding rage of his illusion.
But Ally was real. He was holding her in his arms, and she came to him with trust, with patience, while he tried to regain the memories from his human life, ones that would guide him on the path he was supposed to be on now.
But as he held her in his arms, she felt so fragile, so breakable. He could hear the soft thrumming of her heart. The beat was uneven, a rhythm that reminded him of the last remnants of life.
Ally was dying. She was his soulmate and the beat of her heart gave him all the courage he needed. He wasn’t going to kill her. He was going to save her.
Abaddon slowly broke away from her, keeping her at arm’s length. Her light was dimming, but there was the faintest glimmer in her eyes that held hope for him. She would be strong enough to endure what he was getting ready to do to her. She had to be.
Abaddon brought his wrist up to his mouth, extended his canines and pierced his flesh. As blood rushed up to the surface, he gazed into her eyes.
He parted his lips, ready to speak, to tell her it would be okay, but was silenced by Ally resting a single finger against his lips.
“Shh,” Ally whispered.
Her gaze told him that she knew what was happening. She wouldn’t fight him. He could see that she would trust him, blindly put all her faith in him, was truly ready to walk down an unknown path with him.
He watched in awe as she circled her cold fingers around his wrist and brought it up to her lips. She locked gazes with him and he could feel her taking his essence into him. She ended by gently kissing his wrist where the wound was. She swept her hair to one side, exposing her neck up at him.
Abaddon felt a warm tear run down his cheek.
“It’s okay, Michael,” Ally said, her voice so little. “I’m ready.”
He unfurled his wings, pulled her against him tightly, lowered his lips to hers, and in his mind he whispered the words from a song, a song from a long time ago that meant so much to him then and even more to him now.
“I've waited such a long time for you,” he said. He softly caressed her lips with his, savoring the feel of her against him, the kiss he’d waited a lifetime and beyond for.
He raised his gaze back to hers, brushing a wisp of hair away from her eyes, cupping her face. “A lifetime,” he said, as he brushed soft kisses along her temple, her cheek, her jawline, back to her trembling lips. Thinking back to that night long ago, he lived the words of that song, held nothing back for what he felt for her.
Abaddon could see the tears standing in her eyes. He kissed them away, their salt lingering on his lips. He drew her closer into him so that he could feel she was real, she was in his arms, her life in his hands.
And through her tears, he could see the relief, he could see the hope, he could see her love staring back at him. His heart hammered in his chest, that muscle giving way to a new life, a life that only love could give.
He brushed his lips against hers again and again, whispering those lyrics so appropriate for them, for their life, their death, their love against a world that, like her essence, was fading fast. “You’ll always be mine.”
With shaky hands, Abaddon pulled her down to the ground with him. Cradling her in his lap, he grazed his canines against her throat. “I need you,” Abaddon whispered, as Ally laced her fingers through his hair, pulling him down to her vein. She arched her back, pressed up against him, encouraged him to drink from her, to take her to where he’d been.
Abaddon exhaled against her skin. With one hand holding her head and the other pressed firmly into the small of her back, he pierced her, sunk his teeth into the soft flesh at her neck. He took her into him, her blood coursing through him, sating a hunger for far more than sustenance. In her blood was the story of their life, the answers he sought, the lyrics to their own song.
Abaddon could feel the life slowly fade from her, could hear her heartbeat slow. Removing his canines, he drew back from her. Her head lolled to the side, her pupils beginning to fix. He brought her lips back to his, kissed her gently.
As Ally’s last breath escaped her body, Abaddon clutched her tightly to his chest, a crimson tear falling against her, he whispered into her ear, “Hurry back to me.”

EXCERPT:

Elle and George have agreed to be friends. George has invited her to a friend’s house for a barbeque and he’s just got out of the swimming pool.

Elle turned to find George toweling himself dry. He was standing close, too close really, and some of the water from his hair flicked on to her. It was suddenly difficult to breathe. George was a formidable presence with his clothes on, but without them he was magnetic. His chest was muscled and she itched to run her hands over it. She backed up a step.

“Sorry,” he said and grinned.

“I should help Toby with his dinner,” she said.

“Kate’s got him taken care of,” George said.

She had. Toby and Kate had found seats together at the table and Toby had some ribs on his plate. Kate handed him the potato salad and they both seemed perfectly happy.

Elle acknowledged the pinch of loss – her little boy was growing up and didn’t need her any more – but part of her was pleased. She didn’t want him to be clingy, didn’t want him to be scared of the world.

George handed her a plate. “Help yourself.”

He’d yet to put on his T-shirt and the temptation to help herself to something else was strong.

She shook her head, surprised at herself. She hadn’t been interested in sex for years; she’d hated the way Dean had made her feel so vulnerable, had her begging him for release. The last thing she should be feeling now was attraction for someone she was determined not to get involved with, as anything other than a friend.

Without benefits.
