EXCERPT:

From Chapter 1

“What’s all that ruckus out there?” Caleb asked his driver.

Roger pulled a stocking cap from his head, mussing his curvy brown hair as if he’d touched a plasma globe, and dropped into the high-backed barrister chair opposite Caleb. He sank into the dark, velvet cushion as if he’d been running for days and said, “The nine ladies dancing have arrived.”

Caleb’s grimace answered him. “It sounds like a flock of cackling hens.”

“Cackling hens? Those were French hens. Three I think.”

“What?”

“Are you with me, Caleb? Three French hens, two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear—”

“Are you singing?” Caleb interrupted him.

Roger chuckled. “Perhaps not very well. The last of the guests have arrived for their holiday package. Christmas has officially begun, my friend. You might as well get into the spirit rather than sitting in here with a look like you’re about to stab someone with a bayonet. Do you want to welcome the last four guests to the chateau or go hide in your happy solitude?”

Caleb made a grumbling sound under his breath as if selecting which topic to respond to. He looked to the fireplace where orange and bright shards of branches gave way to the black and gray outlines of wood that had finished burning. The fire had died; the embers merely had to admit it now to make it so. Caleb stared at the patches of orange, considering the effort necessary to break the tender wood to release the flames still hidden inside. It was easier to allow the embers to slowly give up, to slowly extinguish all hope for rekindling.

Q&A with Amy McKinley

Q: Can you describe your dream home?

A: My dream home would be on the beach with a gorgeous view of the ocean. There would be a screened-in lanai with gently turning ceiling fans and comfortable furniture to sit and relax for breakfast, or anytime really, while watching the waves roll in. It would be the perfect place for me to work as well.
Inside would be a mix of warm, handcrafted hardwoods and stone. There would be an updated kitchen and all the modern necessities we’d desire, while still maintaining enough of a beach vibe. Inside, living would be a minimum of two spacious bathrooms with double sinks and enough bedrooms for my family to comfortably use, but not too big. Access to the beach via a boardwalk or path directly from the home to a private beach for swimming, watersports, and relaxing is exactly what I’m hoping for some day. And an office for me to write with a view of the ocean would be a must!

Q: If we were to come to your house for a meal, what would you give us to eat?

A: Oh, wait…I have to cook? If I was hosting a gathering I’d serve lasagna, French bread, and Caesar salad. Or we’d grill out. Steaks, hamburgers, and these incredible blue cheese and bacon brats with corn on the cob or I’d make mashed potatoes and asparagus.

Q: Say your publisher has offered to fly you anywhere in the world to do research on an upcoming book, where would you most likely want to go?

A: There are so many places I really want to go. I’d have to say Ireland and Scotland have been two places that have been a dream for a long time. Either one would be great. To visit the castles, walk through them and witness a little bit of the history in that beautiful country would be amazing.
Kylemore Abbey is a castle in Ireland that I modeled Jade’s family home after.
Who designed the book cover for the book you are touring?
Trisha Fitzgerald designed my book cover for Hidden and I absolutely love it. I was stunned when I saw it for the first time. She is a fabulous artist and I am so happy with how it turned out.

Jade’s temples throbbed. She headed toward the east turret where she knew her mom favored her morning meals. As she burst into the room, Jade startled Aiesa. A fork clattered right before her brother, accompanied by shrieks of joy, jumped up from his chair and ran to her.

Jade pasted a wide grin on her face as she bent to pick up her half-brother. His arms wrapped around her neck was the sweetest thing ever. She sunk into his embrace and inhaled deeply, closing her eyes. He had the best little demon smell. She clutched him to her until he squirmed. Releasing him, she realized that for the first time in a while, her shoulders were relaxed. Opening her eyes, she met her mom’s gaze over her brother’s shoulders.

Her mother’s dark hair hung down in a fall of midnight. A storm of worry shone in her eyes. Aiesa half rose, her mouth forming a circle. Damn. Tension rocketed back up again. Nahl pushed at her, forcing her gaze back to him.

“Hey, little demon, you’re looking very handsome this morning.” Jade tweaked his nose.

He favored both their mother and step-demon with hair black as night and ebony eyes. And lucky for him, he inherited Xavior’s olive-toned skin, but not their mother’s deep-red lips. On Mom, they looked stunning. On a boy, well…not so much.

“I’m fierce, not handsome.” Nahl frowned at Jade, grasping her long tresses for emphasis.

“Fierce and handsome.” She chuckled. “What mayhem have you got planned today?”

He beamed as she sat him down, then scampered back to his food. “I get to go to Kristo’s to work on magic. We’re going to turn beetles into snakes.”

“That sounds like fun.” She snuck a peek at her mother, who watched her closely.

Nahl’s laugh turned wicked as he gazed his sister with glee. “Then the snakes into spiders.”

Jade shuddered. “Wonderful.” She couldn’t stand spiders as her mischievous little brother knew very well.

“Why don’t you head over early, Nahl? Cade can escort you there. He’s in the war room with your father. Go find him.” Aiesa instructed her young son.

“Okay, Mom.” Nahl hopped off his chair. A quick hug and kiss were given to their mom and Jade before he raced from the room.

“I can’t believe how much he’s grown since the last time I saw him.”

“Hmm, why don’t you have a seat, Jade?” Aiesa’s gaze never left her daughter.

“Sure.” After sitting down, Jade glanced nervously around the bright room. The sunlight streamed in, illuminating the blue and green mosaic tiles. The room emanated the feeling of being at the seaside. All it lacked was a bit of sand.

With a little illusion, Aiesa used to take her daughters to breakfast on the beach in this very room. It had been heaven. Perhaps that’s why I’m drawn to California in the human realm.

Unable to avoid it any longer, Jade met her mother’s gaze.

Grasping her hand, Aiesa asked, “The fiery orange circle around your eyes is new. How long has the Fates’ curse been active?”

Icy fingers crawled up Jade’s spine, and her stomach churned with worry with her fears confirmed by her mother’s words.

EXCERPT:

Time had grated on me. Not because I hadn't enjoyed it, I had enjoyed every second of it, but because I couldn't help the nagging feeling in the back of my mind warning me to not become complacent. The other shoe would drop and it had.

Destiny and Life have basically disappeared; I had their numbers but had been trying to convince myself I didn't need their help. I couldn't gamble like that, not with Catalina's life. Not with our future. If it took swallowing my pride, I would do it in a heartbeat. Oliver’s visit only solidified my decision further. I pulled my phone from my pocket and let my finger hover over Denny's name for a moment before I sighed and dialed it.

It rang four times before it went to a generic voice mailbox that read his number back to me with instructions to leave a message. After the beep, I stayed silent for far too long, not sure exactly where to start. The only comfort I had was that Denny understood me like few in this world and the Other did.

"This was too easy," I confessed out loud for the first time. Saying it made me feel like a failure. A failure that would get more than just myself killed. "I know Tori, better than I care to admit to. I knew she wouldn’t bow out gracefully. We need to talk. In person."

I hung up, letting my confession speak for a plea in and of itself. Denny and Robin both risked a lot to keep us alive and together, I would have liked to think they would have a vested interest in us staying that way. I had made the call, now all I could do was wait for my plea to be heard and headed.

Telor surveyed my room with a sad resigned smile, stopping to look at my pictures, running his hand over one of the many porcelain dolls on a shelf next to my dresser. I wondered what he was thinking, or if he would tell me the truth if I asked. The urge to comfort him was almost unbearable. Walking quietly over to him, I wrapped my arms around his middle and pulled him to me, resting my head on his back.

“What’s the matter?” I asked.

“Nothing,” he answered, though his voice was far away. He might have heard the question, but he wasn’t listening.

“Liar,” I whispered. “Tell me.”

“Are you and your brother close?” he asked.

“We were. He’s dead,” I answered. I haven’t actually said that out loud for a long time. People were liars—it didn’t get easier. As much as it hurt to talk about Ollie, it hurt to watch Telor yearn for his lost ones more.  Ones he never really got to mourn. “He and my dad died in a car accident when I was eight. Oliver was only seventeen; he was nine years older than me.”

“Your mum?” he asked, his voice had gotten thicker. “She’s still around?”

I let out a short bark of humorless laughter. “She’s still alive. But my mother has been gone for a long time. When they died, she drowned her sorrow at the bottom of any bottle she could find. I remind her of the family she lost, so she can barely stand to look at me.”

Possessing the Witch by Elle James ~ Review

It doesn't matter what genre Elle James writes. This lady captures my attention and holds me spellbound throughout the entire book.

Possessing the Witch is a fabulous paranormal romance with all types of different paranormal themes. I have to say I was completely fascinated by this storyline.

Selene Chattox has the special ability to read minds and know when someone is in trouble. She knew someone was in horrible trouble when she found Gryph Leone. Gryph was horribly injured when Selene takes him home to try to help him. Selene has is a very caring witch that I admired very quickly. She goes to great lengths to help those in need.

Gryph is a lion shifter and isn't always able to control when he shifts. He's one tough guy with a huge heart that I could not help but adore quickly.

Selene and her sisters are a bunch that I would love to meet. These ladies work well together and are able to find some really creative ways to get themselves and Gryph out of some horrible situations. I hope the rest of the sisters will get a chance to have their stories told because I would love to read more about the Chattox sisters. Witches are one of my favorite paranormal characters. I loved the powers that Ms. James wrote for Selene and her sisters.

Selene and Gryph work great together. They also have an intense attraction for each other. However they have a lot of obstacles they must over come if they are going to find their way together. They both have unique abilities that they are afraid to share with the other. They have unique families and responsibilities.

Possessing the Witch is full of suspense, drama, and some steamy love scenes. Overall this is a great story that I could not put down. Just about the time I would think that everyone was safe and all was going to be fine, something else would happen. There was literally danger around every corner.

I have to say I was completely surprised by one of the bad guys in the story. Wow Ms. James done a great job of leading up to that one. Of course I am not going to tell you who it is. You need to grab up a copy of this story now and find out for yourself.

If you enjoy a great paranormal story with witches and shifters you really need to grab Possessing the Witch. If you are fan of Elle James' romantic suspense stories I think you will love this one as well. I know I couldn't read this book fast enough to see what was going to happen next.

I was given the opportunity to read this great story so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Possessing the Witch.

Blood Imprint by K J Winters ~ The Lunar Twilight Prophecies ~ Review

I have to say that this is my very first vampire story ever. I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading but I have to admit that K J Winters caught my attention right away. I was completely captivated from the beginning and I could not wait to see what could possibly happen next. There is plenty of drama and a few twist and turns that had me reading quickly.

Jade has no idea about her past as a vampiress. She is just busy living the life of a busy high school girl getting ready to graduate high school. She has a wonderful best friend who is more like a sister to her. I loved the relationship between Jade and Nonny. They are really close and Nonny is there when Jade really needs her best friend and someone to understand what is going on.

Tristan Sterling appears as an exchange student at Jade and Nonny's school. Jade feels an instant attraction as she sees him. Tristan makes no secret that he has feelings for Jade.

Ms. Winters takes us on a fabulous journey of Jade's coming of age and many dangerous and dramatic moments that occur. I don't want to tell you too much about the story line because I certainly would not want to spoil it for you.

I will say I loved the friendships and relationships in this book. They are firmly built on a lifetime of knowing each other.

I will say that I CAN NOT wait to start reading Traced, the next book in this series. I can't wait to see how Ms. Winters plays out the secret I read at the end of Blood Imprint. I am sure that Ms. Winters are created yet another captivating story that I will not be able to put down.

If you enjoy a great young adult vampire story then you really need to pick up your copy of Blood Imprint. I think you will enjoy the suspense, the drama, the friendships, and the coming of age issues. I know I certainly did. I have Traced in my to be read pile so stay tuned for my review soon.

I was given the opportunity to read this great story so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Blood Imprint

Wicked By Nature by Madison Sevier ~ REVIEW ~

I have a special fondness for stories that include witches. I find witchcraft and magic to be interesting. So when I started reading Wicked By Nature, I was deeply captivated by the witches, the demons, and their really interesting paranormal powers. I have to admit I had some major issues trying to set this book down and I ended up staying up a little later than normal to find out how this book would end.

Selena Barnes has had a rough few years. She has lost her parents, the town that she thought was full of friends has turned against her, she hasn't spoken to her best friend in years, and her fiance’, Shawn Richardson is out of town on business. To top that all off she is trying to pull together the finishing touches of their soon to be wedding. Everything is going wrong for this poor girl.

Then things get worse, I hate to tell you too much but she finds out a few secrets that totally turn her life upside down and sideways. Wow, is really all I can say about where this story line goes. There is so much drama and suspense that I could not help but quickly turn the pages to see what in the world was going to happen next.

One thing I really liked was Selena relationship with her familiar, her cat is funny and so protective of Selena.

The other things I really liked is that when everything starts to fall apart her best friends Kelly and Keith Jacobs step in to help her. They have a really great connections and they are a huge help.

This is the first chance I have had to read any work by Madison Sevier . I have a couple more of her books in my to be read pile and I'm anxious to get to them after reading Wicked By Nature.

If you enjoy stories about witches and paranormal stories you really should check this one out. If you are already a fan of Ms. Sevier then you should hurry and grab a copy of this book.

I was given the opportunity to read this book so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Wicked By Nature.

The Legacy of Buchanan's Crossing by Rhea Rhodan ~ Review ~

The Legacy of Buchanan's Crossing is the first chance I have had to read work by Rhea Rhodan. After reading this wonderful book I know I will be on the look out for more of her work.

Rhea Rhodan has created a very powerful captivating storyline with fascinating characters that had my attention all the way through the book. This is one of those books that I was up late reading because I could not put it down. My eyes were crossing as I was reading or I would not have put it down when I did to go to bed. However, the first thing I did the next morning was finish this great story.

I really liked Cayden Sinclair. She has some very intriguing abilities and she is such a likable character. I really admired her for standing by her grandmother and the crossing. She will do anything to keep them safe. This poor girl goes through a lot and has a lot of things happen to her. She has a dear grandmother and her wonderful pet Nevermore to stand beside her though everything. I loved Nevermore, this bird is not only very loyal but also humorous. I love how he takes revenge on people that do things to hurt Cayden. He and his friends have a way of perturbing the one's that hurt Cayden or her feelings.

Clint MacAllen is a hard working business man. He owns his own construction company so he has a lot going on. I don't want to give to much away but he is surprised when a big project lands in his lap, closely followed by another large project. He's has a lot going on so when he starts having headaches he finds the Handimart a convenient place to pick up over the counter medicine to help. That is where he meets the very unique Cayden. There is an instant attraction between these two. Clint is sure that Cayden is everything he does not want in a woman. Clint really is CLUELESS at times but I found him to be a nice guy.

Overall this is one really captivating story that I certainly enjoyed. I enjoy stories that include witchcraft and this one contain some very interesting aspects of witchcraft. There is plenty of drama that kept me turning pages. I have to admit I was on the edge of my seat for a good portion of this book and just could not wait to find out what in the world could possible happen next. There is also a few steamy scenes between Cayden and Clint as they find their way together. Even with all the drama there is some humor included as well. I found myself laughing out loud at times during this story.

If you enjoy an interesting paranormal story with interesting characters and an intriguing storyline, I think you will enjoy this story. I know I most certainly did. I can't wait to see what Rhea Rhodan may have in store for us next, but I know I would enjoy reading more of her work.

I was given the opportunity to read this book so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my pleasure to share my thoughts with you on The Legacy of Buchanan's Crossing.

Character Interview:

Interview with Bess Houdini, From Resurrecting Harry:

As many of you know, Mrs. Houdini isn’t one to shy away from the spotlight. Before, everything that happened a few months ago, she’s been eager to talk to, well, anyone who would listen to stories about her dearly departed husband. Recently, she’s gone rather quiet, but has graciously agreed to sit down and chat with us about the events of the last month or so that have drastically changed her life.
Bess, you have been through quite a bit in the last year. How are you doing?

Much better than a year ago. Thank you so much for asking.

Do you want to tell me a little bit about that nice young man you have working for you?

Mr. Welch?

She shook her head and clicked her tongue against the roof of her mouth.

Well, he really is something isn't he? No one has seem to get under my skin and raise my dandruff since...well, since my dear, sweet Harry.

Is it true that he moved into your house just days after showing up in town?

Bess turned her head and slight blush tinted her cheeks.

It was a working arrangement at the time, I tell you. I had him doing some much-needed upkeep around the house in exchange for food and a place to lay his head. Perfectly, innocent.

Can you still say that now?

The light flush deepened to a bright crimson.

Oh dear! Do you really want me to answer that question? You know... spoilers and all.

I guess not.

Bess clings to his promise to deliver a coded message from beyond the grave, determined to provide the bridge for him to cross, even if that means befriending her husband's sworn enemy.
Erich needs to help Bess over her loss and put her on the road to healing, but will any good come from resurrecting Harry?

For Harry Houdini, failure wasn't an option.
Being closed into the old steamer trunk didn't faze him, not even when the familiar sound of a padlock clanking in place echoed in his ear. When water began to seep through the seams, most men would panic, but years of experience pushed down the instinct. He knew his faithful assistant and wife, Bess, had slipped into the spotlight to distract the crowd and raise the tension, just like they'd practiced for hours and performed dozens of times.
While the fans anticipated the worst, he took a slow and measured breath and prepared for several minutes without oxygen.
Harry focused on his center from behind veiled lids and used every last bit of strength to extend his legs. The side of the trunk he'd carefully loosened the night before popped off, and the water now rushed in. With cuffed hands, he felt along the lid, guiding himself out. His hooked pinky swiped the key from beneath his tongue, but the metallic taste remained.
Lifting his legs, he made short work of the shackles binding his ankles and then arched his back, reaching toward the surface. In seconds, the cuffs securing his wrists fell away too.
All that was left was to break the surface and claim his reward. The roar of the crowd and Bess's loving arms were the only two things that thrilled him more than defying death. Her and his fans gave him the drive to succeed.
Light faded away, as if rain clouds covered the sun or as if he was sinking further away from his destination.
His world spun like a child's top. A pulse thumped in his ear and molten-hot blood pumped through his veins. Pure adrenaline fueled the glimpses of his past, which flashed by like the slides his brother, Theo, showed after every vacation. But Harry wasn't watching the events unfold; he relived the memories over and again.
The spinning stopped. He now hung upside down, wrapped tighter than a Christmas present. His Chinese Water Torture Chamber, a straight jacket and the stage of the Orpheum Theatre; Harry might as well be safe at home in bed. He'd free himself from the binds as soon as he pushed his shoulder out of joint.
With a pop, this faded to white too.
Always trapped. Never escaping. No reward.
The spinning continued, like a phonograph record.
Shivers raked his body. In the distance, he could hear a doctor offering comfort and explaining to a sobbing Bess that hope was lost.
Harry saw nothing, just shuddered and listened. Icy water enveloped him; his neck rested on the frosty cast-iron tub. No matter how many times he relived it, he still believed his infection would clear and the fever would break. He may have stood in the shadow cast by the angel of death, but he still denied the inevitable. A burst appendix destroy the great Harry Houdini, master escape artist and expert showman? Never. When the lights fell on his final performance, something grander than illness would extinguish his flame.
Swallowing hard, he fought the quiver in his lips and tried to call out for Bess. Her touch to his cheek would provide the needed strength. The only vision that ever played out completely: he whispered her name and watched his own chest rise and fall for the last time.
Spinning. Spinning.
The cold vanished, his pain dissipated, but the mental torture never ended. Over and over he experienced his greatest challenges, but not the successes. Never completing an escape and returning to Bess's embrace kept him lonely and devastated. What had he done to deserve such torment, and for how long would this agony continue?
Harry always believed in ashes to ashes. When his heart stopped, his mind would too. Anything else seemed impossible, but now he knew different. This was Hell.
But what of the fire and brimstone ol' man Thomas used to preach about on the corner?
As a child, Harry's sainted mother would rush him past Seventh and Main where the elderly man testified to the world. She'd whisper passages from the Torah and remind him his main concern should be this life. Despite his mother's dislike for the reverend, he taught Harry a valuable lesson that would stick with him his whole life: give people a show.
Would it disappoint the preacher to know that, despite what the scriptures said, Hell didn't torture the body with never-ending fires, but focused on the mind? Harry knew this was worse.
His stomach heaved to and fro. Bile bubbled in his gut and pushed its way up, burning his throat, but the relief vomiting would bring never came.
Why won't the spinning stop? Maybe because he allowed it to continue. Change comes from within. That's how he lived his life: for every action, a reaction. Why should death be different?
No more complacency.
He tightened his muscles and stretched his body as taut as possible. "STOP!"
Spinning. Spinning. As if he was embedded on a reel-to-reel film and someone had pushed rewind, but he was through being held at someone else's mercy. Again, he ordered an end to the torture.
The loud clank of rusty gears grinding together sounded, and he felt whatever force kept him tied to this existence snap. His body plummeted and his arms thrashed; pleas turned to screams. Maybe there was something worse than the status quo. Falling faster now, he tensed his muscles and braced for the agonizing pain of hitting the ground.
Soft and comforting instead, like slipping into a feather bed and wrapping up in a patchwork quilt, he felt ground beneath him. And serenity. An end to his anguish? He opened his eyes and wondered if he'd see anything but his past. White padding adorned the walls and the floor, like he'd seen in those mental hospitals he toured while concocting his straightjacket escape.
But Harry wasn't crazy. He was dead.
The air shifted; the temperature rose. Sweat replaced the goose bumps that covered his arms. A body? Harry touched the flesh to make sure it was real. The image of a floating soul now shattered by this reality. Hot, humid air burned his lungs as he leaned against the wall and looked up into the ice-blue eyes of a stranger, who loomed a good foot taller than Harry and was wrapped in tight, black leather like the blacksmiths he'd known in his youth or the cowboys he'd first met out west. Long, black hair veiled the stranger's face. He lit a cigarette and threw his head back, inhaling deeply and giving Harry another look at those bizarre eyes. A shiver rode his spine. "My God."
A bubbling laugh erupted from the giant. "Not bloody likely."
