Eyes Wide Open by Lucy Felthouse ~ SPOTLIGHT

Eyes Wide Open
by Lucy Felthouse

Out Now!

Blurb:

A standalone novel from the Totally Five Star imprint.
An ordinary girl catapulted into an extraordinary world meets two even more extraordinary men—but what will she do when she discovers their sexy secret?
Fiona Gillespie moved to London shortly after graduating to take advantage of the opportunities the capital could offer. However, months later, she’s still living in a horrid flat and working in a grimy East End pub. The problem is, she doesn’t really know what she wants to do, career-wise. So when she happens upon an advertisement for a job at a plush Mayfair hotel, she jumps at the chance. A great deal of determination and a spot of luck land Fiona her dream role.
But working at the Totally Five Star London is just the beginning. She adores the role and flourishes, impressing her bosses and making her increasingly determined to climb the career ladder.

While her career is flying, though, her love life is non-existent. She hasn’t even thought about men, never mind met or dated one for months, so when she bumps into two gorgeous businessmen in the hotel, she’s surprised to find her head has been well and truly turned. Even more surprisingly, they flirt with her—both of them! She’s drawn to James and Logan, despite feeling that they’re way out of her league.
When a misunderstanding leads Fiona to James and Logan’s sumptuous top-floor suite, she has no idea what she’s about to uncover. Scenes of people-trafficking, drug-pushing and wild sex parties all appear in her active imagination. Yet what she actually sees is something she’d never even considered before, something that piques her interest.

After discovering their sexy secret, what will she do with this new-found knowledge?

Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of anal play, spanking, sex toys and bondage.

Excerpt:

Continuing to surreptitiously peer at the men over the rim of her glass, it hit her that this was the first time in months that she’d looked at a man with interest, much less two men—and at the same time! But, ready to snatch her gaze away if one of them happened to glance at her, she realized that it wasn’t surprising that the pair had attracted her attention.
The tailored business suits would draw the eye even on an ugly guy. But on these two, the fine clothing was practically an orgasm for the gaze. They sat opposite each other, and their angle to her meant that she had a view of both their profiles—lucky her.
The one to her right had very dark, almost black hair, with a bit of a curl to it, a long straight nose, a trimmed goatee and, if she wasn’t mistaken, deep blue eyes. It was hard to tell for sure from this distance and perspective.
The one on her left had lighter, shorter hair, stubble that by some magical feat still looked smart, and the most sinful lips she’d ever set eyes on. And speaking of eyes, she thought perhaps his were green. What she wouldn’t give to go and check both of them out close up, preferably naked.
Shocked at her own sudden lustful thoughts, she inhaled more than drank another sip of the juice. Unfortunately, it hit her throat all wrong and she almost slammed the glass down as she started to cough. She tried so hard to suppress the cough, eager not to draw attention to herself, that she made it worse. Snatching up the thick linen serviette from the table, she held it to her mouth as she spluttered in a most embarrassing manner, and tears began to roll down her cheeks. By now, she was sure that the whole damn restaurant was staring at her, and she wished the tablecloths reached the floor, like the ones in the restaurant upstairs, so she could hide under the table until she regained her composure.
Swallowing repeatedly to try to soothe her irritated throat, she gasped as a gentle hand laid on her shoulder, which set her off all over again.
“Oh God,” came a voice. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to make you jump. I just wanted to make sure you were all right. See if I could help.”
Unable to speak, Fiona waved a hand to try to signal that she’d be okay, but unless the guy was a mind reader, he’d have no luck figuring that out. Blinking through the tears that marred her vision, her urge to hide underneath the table grew stronger. Christ, it was only the hottie with the blue eyes. And, if she wasn’t mistaken, his sexy friend with the green eyes was also hovering close by, concern etched into his handsome features.
Managing to drag in a breath, she huffed out, “Thank you.”
Just then, Jeremy arrived with a carafe of water, complete with ice, and poured her a glassful. “Here you go, Fiona. Drink this. Are you all right? Anything else I can get you?”

Interview:

Crystal: Today I have the pleasure of hosting Lucy Felthouse. Welcome Lucy, I'm so excited to have you here today! Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?

Lucy: Thanks so much for having me here today. My name is Lucy Felthouse and I’m from Derbyshire, in England. I write erotica and erotic romance in lots of different lengths and subgenres, and very much enjoy it! I also enjoy reading, watching TV and films, spending time with my other half, walking my dog, visiting stately home and historical sites, and travelling.

Crystal: Do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?

Excerpt:
“Okay,” Ace said, clearly taking control. “I hate to be a total killjoy, but once I’ve said what I have to say, I promise it’ll be fun, fun, fun all round. First, and most important, I have to ask a question—are we still all absolutely sure about this? My vote is yes.” He turned to me. “Nees? Say the word and it’s off.”
I shook my head vehemently. “No, I haven’t changed my mind. I still want this.” Not to mention, if I changed my mind, I could end up with a permanent stalker.
With a curt nod, Ace looked at Barton. “And you?”
“The same.” Well, that was hardly a surprise.
There was a collective exhalation of breath. “Fantastic,” Ace continued. “Barton, just so you know, Aneesa and I have already discussed all the stuff about how this could affect our relationship, and we’re all good, so no worries on that front. And, I see my gorgeous girl has already gotten lubrication and protection ready—efficient as ever, babe.” He winked at me again. “Now, rules. As long as condoms are being used—anything goes. Oral, anal, vaginal. But nothing icky—new condoms each time. We have plenty. Bondage is okay, spanking is okay—but nothing too heavy, and certainly nothing that will mark her permanently. She says ‘scissors’ you stop what you’re doing immediately—it’s her safe word. Anything to add, babe?”
I thought for a second. “No, you got it in a nutshell. Efficient as ever.” I grinned as I parroted his words back to him for the second time that evening. He was efficient, too. I loved how he’d gone all authoritative, taking control, making sure there was no room for mistakes or misunderstandings. His words, his rules, his explanations, they should probably have turned me off, ruined the mood, but they didn’t. Instead, they fanned the flames of my lust, and also made my love for him increase, if that was even possible. A kinky new adventure, something we both wanted, and his priority was my happiness—is there anything more attractive in a man?
Happily, I drank in the sight before me. A gorgeous vampire—blond, fair-skinned, lithe, and supremely talented in the sack. Beside him, an equally gorgeous werewolf—dark-haired, olive-skinned, built like a brick shithouse and…who knew how he was going to be in the sack? But I was confident, somehow, that he wouldn’t be a disappointment, despite the fear that tinged the edges of my consciousness.
Realizing they were both staring and waiting for me to say something, I crossed my legs at the ankles in what I hoped was a nonchalant manner. I held all the cards, and they knew it. Pleasantries had been observed. It was time to plunge into some wild, insane, crazy sexual activity. But first, I wanted to toy with the boys a little. Just a little. And, if I was honest with myself, I wanted to inspect the goods.
Casually, I said, “Okay, gentlemen. It’s time to stop chatting and get on with it, don’t you think? So…I’d like you to strip. Nice and slow. Only when you’re both naked and erect will I be removing my own clothes. All right?”
Their responses came quickly, but they weren’t verbal.

Crystal: Where did you come up with the idea for your latest release?

Lucy: It was written in response to a call for submissions from the publisher. They were looking for paranormal ménage stories. I gave it some thought and Aneesa, the human female lead popped into my head first, and the rest just sorted itself out as I began to write.

Crystal: What are you currently working on?

Lucy: I’m currently working on a M/F erotic romance novella for a boxed set with several other authors. I’ve literally only just started it, so there’s not much to say just now, except that it’s about an older man and a younger woman, and is set in the Peak District in England. It’s going to be a very outdoorsy story and will hopefully be a lot of fun, too. And sexy, of course.

Crystal: Do you have any special routine that you follow when you are writing?

Lucy: No, not really. I don’t work well with  large distractions, mainly noise, like dogs barking, people shouting, engines revving, banging, or anything like that. But otherwise I can generally just get on with it. Deadlines often push me to get on with it, even if I’m not really feeling it.

Crystal: Did you have to do a lot of research for this book or any other? If so do you have a fascinating fact that you have learned you would like to share with us?

Lucy: No, this book needed zero research. The next book I have coming out, my next full-length novel, Eyes Wide Open, is set in London. I know London pretty well, but since the book revolves around a hotel in Mayfair, I needed to go and explore Mayfair further so I could write about it more authoritatively. It was fun!

Crystal: Who are some of your favorite authors that you like to read?

Lucy: Charlaine Harris, Richelle Mead, Portia Da Costa, Carole Matthews, Lee Child, Kate Morton... my tastes are very varied!

Crystal: Is there a genre you haven't written that you would like to try?

Lucy: The beauty of writing erotica/erotic romance is that you can play around with different subgenres within that—i.e. paranormal, contemporary, historical, thrillers... I have written a mystery/thriller which is still classed as an erotic romance, which was really fun. But one thing I would like to write is a spy thriller... but I reckon there’d still be plenty of sex, so it’d still be classed as erotica/erotic romance. I actually have an idea I’ve been thinking about for this. It’s just finding the time to write it!
Happy Reading,
Lucy x

Interview:

Crystal: Today I am so excited to host Lucy Felthouse. Welcome Lucy! I'm so happy to have you here today. Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?

Lucy: Of course. My name is Lucy Felthouse and I’m from Derbyshire, in England. As well as writing, I enjoy reading, watching TV and films, spending time out walking and exploring in the countryside with my other half and my dog, and visiting stately homes and other historical sites and properties.

Crystal: What are you currently working on?

Lucy: I’ve just started work on my next novel. I can’t say too much about it as it’s written for a specific line for a certain publisher and I’d be terribly embarrassed if I mentioned it and they didn’t accept it! But I will say that it’s set in London, and is a M/M/F erotic romance with lashings of BDSM. I’m looking forward to getting stuck in to it!

Crystal: Where did you come up with the idea for for either your current release or your current  WIP?

Lucy: Native Tongue is the follow up story to Desert Heat, which I originally wrote for a M/M military boxed set called Unconditional Surrender which was released in October last year. It did really well, and so when the boxed set was taken off sale, I published Desert Heat as a standalone tale. I got lots of messages from people, and comments in reviews, that they’d love to see a follow up story, to find out what happened to the characters next. Naturally I was flattered that the boys had made so much of an impact, so when I got time, I wrote another instalment in their story. I’m delighted to say that so far, reviews have been very positive!

Crystal: Do you have a favorite snack that you like to munch on while writing? If so would you mind sharing what it is with us?

Lucy: Not really—I don’t tend to snack if I can help it. But occasionally if I’m really hungry between  meals I’ll go and get myself a cup of tea and also grab two or three biscuits to dip in it.

Crystal: Do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?

Lucy: Sure. I’m quite fond of this scene later in the book, where Hugh and Rustam are in bed together and Rustam gone a little bashful. I can’t say too much more without giving some of the plot away, but it amused me as I was writing it, and still amuses me when I read it back. Though of course it’s better in context ;)

“So stop making excuses and give me a kiss. If you’re too embarrassed for anything else, I promise I won’t hold it against you, but don’t make me sleep next to you without so much as a kiss.” It was a devious move. Balkhi’s libido was just as high as Wilkes’, so he was pretty sure that once they kissed, Balkhi’s hormones would override his conscience. He bloody hoped so, anyway.
Balkhi’s handsome face creased into a smile, and he rolled his eyes, though they glinted with amusement. “All right, all right!”
They moved closer together, and their mouths met. Wilkes sighed happily, relishing the feel of their bodies touching, as well as their lips. They both wore boxer shorts, but having Balkhi’s warm, muscular chest pressed to his was still delicious, particularly since they’d barely touched all day. They’d had no privacy, really, from the moment Balkhi had stepped off the train up until now. Hours spent in each other’s company without being able to express their feelings—Christ, it had been like Afghanistan all over again. Only with less sun, sand and soldiers.
Slowly, Wilkes ramped up the heat of the kiss. If he moved too quickly, Balkhi would suss out his true intentions in a heartbeat. But if he was careful, hopefully he’d believe it was just erotic nature taking its course, rather than his boyfriend being lusty and sneaky.
Tentatively, Wilkes poked out his tongue, seeking entrance to Balkhi’s mouth. The scent of peppermint invaded his nostrils—they’d both brushed their teeth and gargled with mouthwash whilst cleaning up. Mercifully, Balkhi opened up. It took a whole lot of willpower for Wilkes not to dive in and truly possess his lover’s mouth, to show him exactly how much he wanted him, how much he intended to have him. Instead, he kept it slow and steady, sweeping his tongue over Balkhi’s, tickling a little, taunting, having fun.
From Balkhi’s body language, he could tell he was winning him over. Both their cocks were rock hard and ready to go, tenting their boxers and pressing against each other. Balkhi was also relaxing into the embrace, straining towards his lover, silently, possibly unconsciously, asking for more.
Wilkes was just contemplating giving him more when a creak on the landing outside the door made Balkhi spring away from him like a scalded cat and sit bolt upright.
Turning his fearful gaze to the door, he whispered, “What was that?”

Crystal: When you are not busy writing wonderful stories to keep us lucky readers entertained, what do you like to do? Do you have a hobby?

Lucy: Oops, I think I mostly covered this in the first question. But I did forget to mention that I quite enjoy knitting. It’s probably something to do with the creative part of me—it’s nice to see the finished article and know I made it. The most ambitious project I’ve taken on was a jumper (sweater), though I’ve also knitted a penguin, owls, an elf, and lots of simpler stuff like hats, and eReader and phone cases.

Crystal: Do you have a favorite background noise you like to having going while you write (TV, Music, kids playing)?

Lucy: In an ideal world, there’d be no noise at all. I really don’t like noise, and I suspect it’s probably something to do with being an only child. I wasn’t brought up in a house full of screaming and shouting. If I won the lottery I’d buy a house somewhere quiet (I currently live on a pretty typical English residential street) and soundproof my writing room!

I am getting better at blocking out sounds, though. Though things like banging, next door mowing the lawn and the kids across the road playing football right outside are pretty distracting. I end up putting headphones on and playing music if it gets too much.

Crystal: Thank you so much for visiting. It's been a pleasure. Is there anything else you would like to share with us today?

Lucy: Thanks so much for having me here today, it’s been great! And thank you to those of you that have stopped by. Don’t forget to scroll down and enter the giveaway, and also check out the rest of the stops on my blog tour!

Excerpt:

Heart pounding and palms clammy, Catriona forced herself to put one foot in front of the other and walked into the bookshop. It was bedlam. She’d never seen a bookshop so busy in her life.
She paused just inside the door. What the fuck was she doing? If someone saw her, recognised her—
She shook her head sharply and clenched her fists until her fingernails dug into her flesh, the nipping pain bringing her back to her senses.
No one would recognise her, she reminded herself, because no one knew who she was. Well, people knew who she was—but not in relation to the reason she was here.
Taking a deep breath and attempting to behave like a normal person, she continued through the shop, trying to figure out where she needed to be. Not that she even needed to be here at all. It was insanity that had drawn her out of her Thames-side apartment and into the bowels of the Tube, and finally into the huge Piccadilly bookstore.
What else but insanity would make a person head into central London to buy a copy of a book on the same day it came out? Especially when one already had a large box of copies of said book stuffed into the bottom of one’s wardrobe. Complimentary author copies, according to the note from the publisher.
Maybe it was curiosity, she thought, as she joined the back of the queue snaking across the ground floor of the shop. Nobody nearby was holding a copy of the book yet, so she assumed that somewhere between here and the till there was a stack of the paperbacks, ready to be picked up and paid for. And presumably read. Christ.
Surreptitiously, Catriona pinched the back of her hand. Wincing, she figured she had to get her head around this situation, and fast. It was only going to get bigger and crazier—or so the publisher’s marketing team, a bunch of young, attractive and scarily glamorous people, had told her.
She’d already seen plenty of evidence of their expenditure on the way over—billboards, bus shelters, ads on the Underground; all displaying huge versions of her book cover, proclaiming it a bestseller, quoting stellar reviews and even lauding it “the next big thing” and “the next Fifty Shades of Grey.” One strap line even said “Who needs Christian Grey when you’ve got Eliza Dickinson?”
It was the fact that her book had even been compared to the first big thing that she couldn’t quite grasp.
The Fifty Shades phenomenon had spawned merchandise, sex toys and even a film. But it was just a one-off, wasn’t it? Something that couldn’t be replicated, shouldn’t be replicated.
Catriona certainly hadn’t set out to write a book to appeal to the same readership. All she’d done was take out her real life frustrations—both sexual and otherwise—on the keyboard of her laptop. The rest had simply been a freak of nature.
How could it appeal to the same readership, anyway? Her characters were the complete opposite of E.L. James’—her lead female, Eliza, was a dominatrix, and Leon her willing sub. Or he was by the end of the book, anyway.
It didn’t matter. None of it mattered. Her book was out, today, and what happened next was completely out of her hands. She should just relax and go with the flow. Though she still couldn’t get over the fact that people were not only buying her book—they were queuing to buy it. Patiently, too, despite the glacial speed at which they were moving forward. Did they only have one till open, or something?
People had joined the line behind her as she’d been ruminating, and she shuffled around slightly so she could see how many more were waiting. Shit—there were loads! She couldn’t even see the end of the queue.
Her surprise must have shown on her face, because the man behind her let out a chuckle. “It’s crazy, isn’t it?” he said. “All these people waiting to buy a book when we could have purchased online—probably cheaper—and had it delivered directly to our doors. Or in a single click, have it appear on our eReaders.”
Catriona hadn’t even thought of that. So, not only were people here, in the bookstore—and presumably stores all over the country, too—they were buying online, loading up eReaders… all for her little book!

Interview:

Crystal: Today Lucy Felthouse has stopped by to answer a few questions. Welcome Lucy! I'm so happy to have you here today. Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?

Lucy: I’m 29, from Derbyshire in England. I write erotica and erotic romance in lots of pairings, lengths and subgenres. I also love to read, watch TV and films (you’ll soon realise what a big fan I am of the Marvel universe!), go walking and exploring in the countryside, spend time with my other half and my dog.

Crystal: Do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?

Lucy: I’m rather fond of the part where Reese realises what Zach is up to. Here’s a snippet...

He rolled his eyes. “Doctor, for a seriously smart woman, you’re being very dumb. Think about it. Yes, this is my shirt. But have you ever seen these trousers before? Or these glasses? I’m trying to be someone.” Running his hand through his hair, he sighed. “Fuck, I’ve done this all wrong, haven’t I? I remembered your chosen order and was sticking to it, but this outfit is the most vague—you’d have twigged straight away if I’d chosen any of the other ones, I’m sure.”
“Outfit? My chosen order?” Zach was right—she must be being completely dumb, because she could not comprehend what was going on. Who the fuck was he supposed to be? And why?
“Let me help you out, sweetheart.” He cleared his throat, then spoke again. “That’s my secret, Cap. I’m always angry.”
Reese’s mouth dropped open as she finally caught on. Her heart pounded and she felt heat rushing to her cheeks. “Fuck! Seriously? You dressed up as Bruce Banner? For me?” Another realization hit her. “And you’ve got other outfits? Shit—do you have the whole collection?”
“Shut up, Reese, and kiss me. Doctor’s orders.”
Grinning, she took that as his answer. Slipping her arms around Zach’s waist, she pulled him close and stretched up to do as he commanded. Their lips met, and immediately delicious sensations began rushing around Reese’s body. She’d pretty much worked out how the late afternoon, evening and night were going to go now, and they held immeasurable amounts of pleasure and promise.
Zach had leaned down into their embrace so they could deepen their kiss. Parting her lips, Reese eagerly accepted Zach’s tongue, capturing it with her own and tangling them together. They explored each other’s mouths, their mutual affection and attraction ramping up steadily as they kissed.
The heat that had taken over Reese’s cheeks had now gone considerably further south, pooling in her groin. Without even looking or touching, she knew her vulva and clit were swelling, and that she was growing wetter by the second. Zach had the ability to do this to her on any given day—even after several years together, she still fancied the pants off of him—but today was something special. He’d gone above and beyond, buying her a gift card to put her off the scent while secretly planning something that was so utterly personal, so totally thoughtful and unbelievably sexy that she could scarcely believe it was happening. He’d clearly put some serious time and effort into this, and all without her suspecting a thing.
Kissing him harder, more passionately, she poured every ounce of her need for him into it, hoping he felt it. Felt just how fucking delighted, ecstatic she was about his insane yet ingenious plan.

Crystal: Where did you come up with the idea for your current release?

Lucy: A while back, my publisher put out a call for submissions for a series they called Geekgasm. As a huge geek, this immediately appealed to me, so I sat down and worked out exactly what area of geekiness I wanted to write about. It had to be something I myself had an interest in, so I narrowed it down to Marvel. Then, after some further thought, I figured it’d be fun to pen something about cosplay. I really enjoyed writing this novella—especially as the research involved quite a bit of time looking at photos of the gorgeous Avengers so I could describe their outfits in detail...

Crystal: What are you currently working on?

Lucy: As I write this post, I’m between projects. I just finished off a short story for a collection which is coming out on the 10th February – Sexy Just Got Rich. I’m currently in planning stages for my next novel—I’ve got to write a synopsis and send it to my publisher. Fingers crossed they’ll like it and give me the go-ahead to write the book. I also have a short story that I’d like to extend and send to another of my publishers. After that... who knows? Plans change all the time J

Crystal: Do you have any special routine that you follow when you are writing?

Lucy: No, not really. I’m not good at writing when there are distractions around me, like lots of noise or anything like that. But other than that, I can usually just sit down and start hammering out words. Some pieces are easier to write than others, and weirdly I always seem to slow down when I get to the sex scenes. Mostly, though, I look at my deadlines and see that I need to get on with it!

Crystal: Did you have to do a lot of research for this book or any other? If so do you have a fascinating fact that you have learned you would like to share with us?

Lucy: Yes and no. I already knew what cosplay was, and I’m a big fan of Marvel and The Avengers, so I didn’t have to start any research from scratch. It was mainly pulling up photographs of each of the Avengers in turn and making sure I was describing their outfits correctly. I also had to make sure I was getting any quotes correct, too. But it was nothing too intensive. And I don’t think there were any fascinating facts, to be honest. It was quite a long time ago that I wrote the book, so I can’t remember!

Crystal: Who are some of your favorite authors that you like to read?

Lucy: I enjoy Richelle Mead, Chris Ryan, Lee Child, Vince Flynn (RIP). The erotica/erotic romance authors I enjoy are so many that I couldn’t possibly list them all! I’d be here forever ;)

Crystal: Is there a genre you haven't written that you would like to try?

Lucy: Yes, absolutely. I do enjoy writing what I do because I’ve experimented with different genres within erotica/erotic romance, i.e. paranormal, contemporary, mystery, ghost stories... but one day I’d like to have a go at writing a mainstream contemporary romance, and also a spy thriller—though I suspect the spy thriller would still contain sex! The world of espionage is pretty sexy! For now, though, I still have so many ideas in my head in this genre, that it’ll be a while before I try anything else. As long as I’m writing something, though, I’m happy!

Zachary has a dilemma. His girlfriend, Reese, has a special birthday coming up soon and he has absolutely no clue what to get for her. It doesn’t help that Zach does not share or really understand Reese’s biggest hobby—comic books, superheroes and everything that goes with them. Zach raids Reese’s DVD collection for inspiration, and what he finds there gives him an idea…possibly the best one he’s ever had.
Sure, Reese has fantasized about her favorite superheroes. All those muscles and rakish smiles are to die for. She didn’t think Zach would ever really understand, though. But he proves her wrong in the best way possible.

Excerpt:

Captain Hugh Wilkes sucked in a deep breath, steeling himself for the heat he was about to be subjected to, though he already knew all the deep breaths in the world wouldn’t help. Darkness had fallen on Camp Bastion, in the notorious Helmand Province of Afghanistan, but there would still be residual warmth left to seep away throughout the small hours. Then the sun would rise, and it would start all over again. It was a damn desert, after all. But, all being well, it would be his last ever tour of the godforsaken place. The British Army was already preparing to pull out. The manpower had been reduced drastically over the previous months. It was time to leave the Afghans to get on with it. They weren’t being abandoned—far from it—they would still receive aid, training and money for years to come. But the British Army was no longer needed, apparently. It was still a volatile place, which would no doubt be monitored very closely, in case strategies needed to be reconsidered.
None of that was down to Wilkes, though. He was here with his platoon for six months, doing whatever they were ordered to do by their Company Commander, Major Hunter. It was unlikely they’d be doing any fighting—they weren’t here for offensive operations. More probably they’d be accompanying their vehicles, weapons and ammunition across the country as it was transported to the air base to be sent back home, or patrolling towns and villages as a show of presence, to reassure and protect the inhabitants.
There was only one way to find out. Grabbing his kit, he headed toward the ramp of the huge C17 aircraft with his colleagues, and followed them out onto the airstrip. Immediately, he was hit by the overwhelming smell of aviation fuel. As he moved away from the airplane this was replaced by the dry atmosphere.
Wilkes imagined he could feel the grains of sand coating his throat and tongue. He’d soon get used to it—he always did. Plus, on the bright side, he’d end up with a nice tan at the end of his deployment. Mentally, he crossed his fingers for a nice, event-free tour of duty. Letting his guard down wasn’t going to happen, naturally, he just hoped it wasn’t necessary. Hoped the insurgents would play nicely. The country was completely different to how it had been when Allied forces had gone in after 9/11. Some fantastic progress had been made, but it still wasn’t completely safe. But then, where was? People died in picturesque villages in the English countryside—though generally not courtesy of IEDs, AK-47s or suicide bombers.
