Blog Post: Top 10 Favorite Heroes in Historical Romance

A romance novel is nothing without a compelling hero who draws us in and make us want to visit with him for a while. Romance heroes can be tough, masculine and take-charge, or quiet and more laidback, something like Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. For me, the sexiest hero also has a flaw, which adds dimension to his personality. Whether a hero is an alpha or a beta, one characteristic every romance novel leading man has in common is a complete and total devotion to the heroine. That’s what ultimately makes us fall in love with him right along with the heroine, which I have certainly done with the ten unforgettable heroes below.

Diana Quincy’s Top 10 Favorite Heroes in Historical Romance

Derek Craven (Dreaming of You by Lisa Kleypas) The tough but tender hero who rises from the gutter to become owner of a gaming hell and one of the richest men in England.

Cam Rohan  (Mine Until Midnight by Lisa Kleypas) A mysterious half-gypsy becomes the unlikely patriarch of the unruly Hathaways.

Adrian Hawkhurst aka Hawker (The Black Hawk by Joanna Bourne) A thief and pickpocket turned master spy who meets his match in fellow spy Justine. The first time they make love is one of romance’s most memorable scenes.

Lucien de Vaux (An Unwilling Bride by Jo Beverley) The arrogant ducal heir learns he is a bastard and overcomes his anger to court his unwilling bride with genuine kindness and decency.

Ismael, Comte D'Esmond  (Captives of the Night by Loretta Chase) A suave and completely unique hero, Esmond skates on the edges of darkness, which adds to his allure.

Adam Kent (The Secret Pearl by Mary Balogh) Although the book begins with Adam, the Duke of Ridgway, hiring a prostitute (who turns out to be the heroine), we soon learn he is a decent and caring man trapped in a loveless marriage.

Alexander Moncrieffe (What I Did for a Duke by Julie Anne Long)  The Duke of Falconbridge has a reputation for being cold and ruthless. Watching him warm up to his enemy’s sister, Genevieve, who yearns for another man, makes for a most entertaining entanglement.

Michael Stirling (When He Was Wicked by Julia Quinn) The long-suffering Earl of Kilmartin must hide his love for his cousin’s wife and becomes her best friend instead. When her husband dies, Michael inherits the title and must confront his strong feelings for the widow.

Kyle Bradwell  (Secrets of Surrender by Madeline Hunter)  A coal miner’s son turned architect, Bradwell rescues the heroine from complete humiliation after her protector sells her to the highest bidder at a house party.

Camden Saybrook (Private Arrangements by Sherry Thomas) Sexy Lord Tremaine is kind, compassionate and desperately in love with his estranged wife, who wants to divorce him and marry another man.

About the Book:

England, 1805

Lady Wilhelmina Stanhope is ruined and everyone knows it. Back in Town for the first season since her downfall, Willa plans to remain firmly on the shelf, assuming only fortune hunters will want her now. Instead she focuses on her unique tea blends, secretly supporting a coffee house which employs poor women and children. If her clandestine involvement in trade is discovered, she'll be ruined. Again.

No one is more shocked by Willa's lack of quality suitors than the newly minted Duke of Hartwell. Having just returned from India, the dark duke is instantly attracted to the mysterious wallflower. His pursuit is hampered by the ruthless Earl of Bellingham, who once jilted Willa and is now determined to reclaim her.

Caught between the clash of two powerful men, a furious Willa refuses to concede her independence to save her reputation. But will she compromise her heart?

Excerpt:

Willa did not appear surprised to find herself sitting next to Hartwell at supper. Nor did she seem to mind.

“I find I have the best seat at the table,” he said as they took their places.

“Are you certain the air won’t be too brisk for you?”

He grinned. “Why Lady Wilhelmina, in your own Arctic way, I do believe you are flirting with me.”

“You are our guest,” she answered in smooth tones. “Pray don’t mistake polite discourse for something that it is not.”

“Ouch.” He touched his heart in dramatic fashion. Sitting next to her, he’d have no need of dessert. She was like a Gunter’s lemon ice—tangy, tart, and delectably frosty.

She curved those pillowed lips into a smile, a reluctant one, but he still counted that a victory. “Surely you are not so easily wounded, Your Grace.”

“Actually, as a second son, I have heard far worse. One is not as popular when he is not in line to inherit a dukedom, or at least a vast fortune. As fate would have it, I am now in possession of both.”

“Clearly modesty is not something you are in possession of.”

Hart gave a mischievous smile. “Usually a title and deep pockets are sufficient to attract the attention of a lovely creature such as yourself.” He sipped his wine. “Otherwise, I shall have to win you over with my equally deep reservoirs of charm and good looks.”

Her closed mouth wobbled with laughter until she managed to wrangle it into submission. “I should like to know when you decide to begin employing those qualities.”

Hart shot her a surprised look. She was teasing him again. Promising. He softened his tone. “Oh, believe me, my lady, I intend to make you well aware of my charms.”

Top Ten Favorite Movies by Heather Van Fleet

Let’s face it, books are way more awesome than movies…but once in while you’ll find that ONE movie that sticks with you forever and then some. Below is my top ten favorites. Let’s see if we have any in common!

10. Call me a sucker (no pun intended of course) but my number ten top fave will always be TWILIGHT. I remember my mom BEGGING me to watch this and I was all like, eww…totally not into vamps and such…but yeah…I watched it eight times in one week after I finally got around to seeing it.

9. The late nineties movie SHE’S ALL THAT is number nine. The nerd girl gets the popular girl? Yeah, definitely me. Because I kind of was that nerd girl in high school. Besides that, I had a huge Freddie Prinz Jr. obsession. Where is that man by the way? L

8. TITANIC. Leonardo DiCapprio...that fancy car scene with the hand on the window… Need I really say more?

7. SWEET HOME ALABAMA was a winner to me. Love, love, love little Reese. The storyline was old, but this one definitely stuck with me. Hit that sweet spot so to speak.

6. I don’t exactly remember how old I was when this movie came out. But I do know it was the first romantic suspense movie that ever tripped my movie trigger. SPEED with Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves. Yum. Loved it! Loved that ending where they slid out from under the bus together. Why though, did they have to ruin such and epic film with such and awful sequel? Ugh.

5. I am a huge fan of HOW TO LOOSE A GUY IN TEN DAYS. Matthew…you totally rock my socks off lemme just say. And you didn’t even need to strip to do it!

4. (Getting down to the nitty gritty here.) Total Disney princess fan. And I’m not ashamed to admit that TANGLED is on this list. Wowzas…who would have thought I’d crush over a little cartoon dude. J

3. This is a new one, just released, but my god it HAD to make it on my list. CATCHING FIRE was AMAZEBALLS. Jennifer Lawrence is in fact my most favorite actress btw. Just thought I’d share that. This was THE BEST book to movie film ever if I do say so myself.

2. Tough, tough, tough…but I’m a huge fan of dance movies. SAVE THE LAST DANCE will always be one of my epic faves. Loved it. Worshiped it. Still break it out sometimes when I’m feeling the need to rehash such a powerful story line.

1. And the number one most epic film of all times for this girl, right here? DIRTY DANCING. Because Jennifer and Patrick made me believe in romance. :)

Blurb:

Abigail Orson has a problem. A love problem to be precise; and she has absolutely no idea how to go about fixing it.
For years now, she has been chasing her best friend’s brother—demanding things from him that he’s never wanted to give. For one? A real relationship that surpasses well beyond that dreaded ‘just friends’ zone. You see, David Anderson is her idea of perfection to a T. The one and only guy who has ever had the ability to make her heart beat faster; make her toes curl with the simple blink of his long, girly lashes. But David is also a recovering amputee, and the only thing he really wants from Abigail is to be left alone. Abigail is a fighter though, and losing the one guy who has ruined her for every other is no longer an option.
A guy with one leg who has lost his motivation to live—to love—to actually be a man. David believes he’s a waste of space. If only the beautiful girl of his unattainable dreams would get that through her perfect, blonde, stubborn head! He’s not the right guy for Abigail. He’ll never be worthy of what she deserves. However, staying away is almost impossible, especially when he’s just as in love with her as she is with him. But Abigail has a life ahead of her, one that’s definitely livable without a nineteen–year–old gimp like him holding her down. What makes her want to stick around is beyond questionable to David’s mind.
Choices will be made. Lines will be drawn. And together, they will face challenges that nobody saw coming. David and Abigail may have had almost fourteen years to fall in love, but the thing is, timing and love have never exactly worked in their favor.

It has been years in the making, and definitely A Long Time Coming for David and Abigail. Let’s hope they don’t screw it up before they actually have the chance to get it right…

Excerpt :

She spun around, nibbling on her lip, grabbing both of his hands as she pulled him slowly along with her. Her eyes were so focused and shiny that he barely remembered his own name, let alone what he was about to say.
“No crutches, David.”
They made it to the edge of the floor, just as the tempo of the music slowed, to that of a seductive, rhythmic beat. She pulled his hands towards her, and he took that non–verbal command, wrapping his arms around her waist. His fingers knew just what to do, settling into the curves of her body right above her perfect ass. Those damn traitorous body parts had a mind of their own.
“I won’t let you fall…” she whispered in his ear, running her fingers through the back of his hair like a vixen who he wanted to steal away forever, only, though, so he could lock her up with him in the backseat of her car again.
Shit …it wasn’t the fear of falling that worried him. Oh no…it was the fear of never wanting to let her go again.
