#Review #Interview ~ Dirty Little Secret by Jennifer Ryan ~ @JenRyan_author @avonbooks

Interview with Jennifer Ryan:

Crystal: Today I have the pleasure of hosting Jennifer Ryan! Welcome, Jennifer! I am so excited to have you here today. Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?

Jennifer: I’ve been writing suspenseful contemporary romances for more than a decade. I started writing when I was a stay-at-home mom – and even when I went back to work. I love writing more than anything, which is why when I started publishing, I eventually quit my job to write full time. In the last 5 years, I’ve published over 20 books and have five series out – The Hunted, McBrides, Montana Men, Montana Heat, and my newest series Wild Rose Ranch.

Crystal: Do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?

JenniferI love a first kiss. Here’s a snippet of Roxy and Noah’s first kiss.

Excerpt:

“Noah...”
God, the way she said his name.
“It’s late and I’m exhausted. Can this wait?”
“Uh, thank you. For my room. I, uh, really appreciate it.” He ran a hand through his hair, uncomfortable under her penetrating gaze.
“How’d that taste coming out of your mouth. You thanking me for anything after John left me half of your ranch and home.”
“Like horse shit.” Not really because the thing was, she got it.
Despite the fact she had to be jealous as hell that he’d grown up here with John, she understood his anger and resentment. She had a side. He had a side. And she was willing to concede that his feelings mattered just as much as hers.
She laughed and the sound went right to his belly and tied it in knots.
Unable to fight it any longer, he closed the distance between them and with one hand sliding to the back of her neck, his fingers buried in the thick mass of silky hair, he pulled her lips to his. She smelled of paint with a hint of flowers, like the ones she’d left by his bed. Their smell teased him all night and made him think of her.
His instinct was to devour, but he felt her tense and her eyes went wide. Watching her, he brushed his lips against hers. Once. Twice. With barely a touch, he tasted a hint of the sweet grapes she’d eaten.
She stood perfectly still, her breath washed over his mouth from her slightly parted lips. “I thought we agreed this wasn’t a good idea.”
“We both lied about that.”

Crystal: Where did you come up with the idea for your latest release?

Jennifer: The idea for Wild Rose Ranch came from a day channel surfing on the couch when I landed on an HBO documentary. Not about climate change or Mr. Rogers. Nope. I stopped on the one about legal prostitution in Nevada called CATHOUSE.

One of the women being interviewed about her job at the notorious Moonlight Bunny Ranch talked about what it was like to work there. She mentioned that she was a single mother and worked at the ranch to support her children, who stayed with grandma while she worked at the ranch for a short period of time each month and spent the rest of the time with her kids.
No one in her hometown knew she worked there. Her children didn’t know. All she wanted to do was make enough money to take care of them and give them a good life. She made more at the ranch in the short time she worked there each month than she would at a minimum wage job, so for her it made sense.

It made me wonder what it would be like to be the child of a prostitute who worked at a legal brothel. She wasn’t doing anything illegal, but still the stigma of that vocation still exists even in this get-famous-for-your-sex-tape world.

And so from that little snippet from the documentary, I created the Wild Rose Ranch where Roxy and her “sisters” Sonya, Adria, and Juliana grew up and their mother’s worked. The girls raised each other, fighting against those who mistakenly thought they grow up to be just like their mothers. But they were strong girls, who turned into amazingly resilient women, who found their own path and the love and family they always wanted.

Crystal: What are you currently working on?

Jennifer: I’ve actually finished all 3 books in the Wild Rose Series – DIRTY LITTLE SECRET, RESTLESS RANCHER, and TOUGH TALKING COWBOY. I am super excited about a brand new project – a women’s fiction book! THE ME I USED TO BE is a big family drama just like I love in my romance books with a little suspense mixed in. But in this book I’ve been able to expand the point of view to include everyone in the family, because let’s face it, everyone has an opinion. But what I really wanted to show was that while a group of people may experience an event, they don’t always see it the same way. Their feelings about it vary based on their experience and emotions.

It’s a rich story about a woman holding on to a secret to spare her family. When the secret comes out – because they always do – her family is shocked to discover what they thought they knew, how they felt, and how they treated Evangeline is all wrong. And where do they go from there?

Crystal: Do you have any special routine that you follow when you are writing?

Jennifer: Yes. I’m a creature of habit. Routine makes my life easier. So I turn on the country music, drink my coffee or tea, munch on my oatmeal, cinnamon, almond cookies, and write every morning after I take my daughter to school. Writing is a solitary job. It’s just you and your imagination. Some days it’s on. Other days, you really have to work for it.

Crystal: Did you have to do a lot of research for this book or any other? If so do you have a fascinating fact that you have learned you would like to share with us?

Jennifer: I did a lot of research for the Wild Rose series about legal brothels in Nevada. I needed to know how they are run and regulated. You might be surprised to know that prostitution is only legal in counties where the population is less than 700,000. In Clark County – where Las Vegas is located – and Washoe County – where Reno is located - prostitution is illegal. Prostitutes and brothels pay taxes and adhere to strict regulations for advertising and health check-ups for the workers. The prostitutes who work there do so of their own free will. For them, it’s a job – one they chose.

It’s a fascinating world to write.

Crystal: Who are some of your favorite authors that you like to read?

Jennifer: For a thrilling suspense, I love Sandra Brown, Karen Robards, and Karin Slaughter.

Historical romance is one of my fav genres to read. Hannah Howell, Stephanie Laurens, Judith McNaught, Cathy Maxwell, Sophie Jordan, Laura Lee Guhrke are a few of the authors I love.

My fav contemporary and western romance authors are Lori Wilde, Lia Riley, AJ Pine, Sara Richardson, Linda Lael Miller, Diana Palmer, Maisey Yates, Jill Shalvis, HelenKay Dimon, and of course Nora Roberts.

Crystal: Is there a genre you haven't written that you would like to try?

Jennifer: I love writing suspense into my romances, but the romance always take center stage. I’d love to write a suspense novel and really go all the way with the danger and action. I have a few ideas I can’t wait to write.

My Review of Dirty Little Secret:

I love a good cowboy book and Dirty Little Secret is a REALLY good cowboy book. Jennifer Ryan has quickly made herself to the to top of my must read list. I was really excited to see that she had a new series coming out and I could not wait to read Dirty Little Secret. This is one of those books that grabbed my attention on the first page and held it all the way through.

Roxy Cordero did not have an easy life. She basically raised herself and her "sisters" at the Wild Rose Ranch.  She is a smart, independent, strong-willed, lady with just the right amount of sass to get her point across. I quickly bonded with Roxy and cheered this lady on. She's been thrown into a situation that she certainly never planned and she's ready and willing to step up to plate for a young girl she has never met before.

Noah Cordero is a hard-working, loyal man that will do anything to keep his ranch and most of all his sister safe. Noah is one of those guys you can't help but love. He's kind and caring and loves his little sister, Annabelle. They may not be blood but that girl is his sister and he will do whatever it takes to make sure she is safe and not in the hands of her wicked mother.

I loved watching Noah and Roxy get to know each other. They didn't start off on the best of terms but it doesn't take long for them to realize they have the same goals in mind and that is to raise Annabelle and keep her safe on the family ranch. The attraction between these two is intense. I enjoyed watching Roxy form relationships with both Noah and Annabelle. I love how they really do come together to form a family.

Roxy didn't know that her Father had found a way to watch out for her as she was growing up. He was the owner of the ranch where Roxy's mother worked and where they lived. Not only did John Cordero leave Roxy part of the Family Ranch he also left her the Wild Rose Ranch and brothel.  Roxy hasn't ever wanted anything to do with her mother's way of life but now she is the owner and she's not entirely sure what she is going to do about that.

Dirty Little Secret is the first book in Ms. Ryan's newWild Rose Ranch series. She has mixed the perfect amount of family, friendships, romance, drama, a few hot scenes, and suspense together to make a fabulous story and set the base for a very promising new series. I can't wait to see what she has in store for the ladies at the Wild Rose Ranch next. I know I will certainly be on the lookout for the next book.

If you are already a fan of Ms. Ryan's work then you need to grab your copy of Dirty Little Secret right now, I know you are going to love it as much as I did. If you haven't had a chance to read a Jennifer Ryan book yet but love a good cowboy romance story with some suspense, grab this one. I know you will not be disappointed.

I was given the opportunity to read this fantabulous story and it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you.

#SpotLight ~WINTER AT THE BEACH by Sheila Roberts ~ @_Sheila_Roberts @pumpupyourbook

WINTER AT THE BEACH
 by Sheila Roberts

Blurb:
Jenna Jones, manager of the Driftwood Inn, a vintage motel in the Washington beach town of Moonlight Harbor, is convinced that a winter festival would be a great way to draw visitors (and tourist business) to town during those off-season months. Everyone in the local chamber of commerce is on board with her Seaside with Santa festival idea except
one naysayer, local sour lemon, Susan Frank, who owns a women’s clothing boutique in town. The beach gets hit with storms in the winter, no one will come, too close to Christmas. Blah, blah. What does Susan know?

It turns out that Susan knows a lot. A big storm hits during the weekend of the festival, wreaking havoc with the parade and producing power outages all over town. Including at the Driftwood Inn.

Jenna finds herself with a motel filled with people, all with no
power. What to do? Enlist the help of friends, of course. Her friends take in many of the stranded visitors, and Jenna and her Aunt Edie take in the others, stuffing them into Aunt Edie’s house next door to the Driftwood.

All the guests come with their own unique stories. The last thing Taylor Marsh wanted was a getaway with her husband. His refusal to give up on his dying business is taking them down financially and killing their marriage. But her sister Sarah (she who has her financial act
together and never lets her sister forget it) insists this will be fun for both their families. It will only be fun for Taylor if her husband gets eaten by a giant squid. Then there’s Darrel Wilson, who planned the perfect anniversary getaway for his wife, who’s been undergoing chemo. So much for the perfect anniversary. And the sisters, Lisa and Karen, who can’t seem to go on a sister outing without it turning into a Lucy and Ethel adventure. Unlikely roommates, all of them. But perhaps each one has a valuable lesson to share with the others. And perhaps, what looked like a disaster will prove to be the best holiday adventure of all.

Excerpt:

Jenna Jones, who manages a vintage motel, the Driftwood Inn, is sure her idea for a holiday festival will bring business to her Washington coast beach town of Moonlight Harbor. Let’s see how her proposal goes over with the Moonlight Harbor Chamber
of Commerce…

“Okay, that takes care of old business,” Brody said. “Now, I think Jenna has some new business.”

Oh, boy. She could hardly wait to see what Susan would have to say about
this.

She cleared her throat. “Actually, I have a suggestion for a way to bring
down more visitors during our slow time.”

“We’re all for that,” said Patricia Whiteside.

Susan clamped her thin lips together and gave Jenna a look that dared her,
the newbie, to come up with something.

Jenna’s nervous twitch put in an appearance. Don’t blink. She blinked
one last time and cleared her throat again. “Well, I was just thinking about
other towns I’ve visited in the past and one that came to mind was Icicle
Falls.”

Susan rolled her eyes. “The cheesy German town.”

“A lot of people find it charming,” Jenna said. “It’s awfully pretty, and
they’ve done a great job of making themselves as authentic as possible. They
always have something going to get people up there. In fact, I did some
research online. They have festivals all year long, including a chocolate
festival. Their tree-lighting ceremonies on the weekends in December bring in
thou- sands of people.”

“So, are you proposing we have a tree-lighting ceremony?” Susan mocked.

“No, but I am proposing we have a holiday festival.”

“We just had a festival in August in case you forgot,” Susan said snidely.

What was with this woman anyway? The town had done a good deed by putting on
a festival to help Jenna raise money to restore the Driftwood after she
experienced a financial setback. It had been such a success that the chamber
had decided to make the Blue Moon Festival a tradition, with proceeds going to
help other businesses in town in need of assistance. Jenna had benefited and
other local businesses would as well, and Susan resented it? She was a crab in
the pot. If she couldn’t succeed, she didn’t want anyone else to, either. And
everyone knew her shop wasn’t doing that well, especially now that Courtney was
selling her own designs over at the Oyster Inn.

Well, pooh on her. Jenna handed papers to both Tyrella and Brody to start
passing around the table.

 “People love festivals. Remember how
many came down for the Blue Moon one?”

“That was in the summer,” Susan reminded her.

“I know. But people also love holiday festivals. We’re looking for ways to
get visitors down here in the winter. Why not put together a giant holiday
party in Moonlight Harbor?”

Patricia Whiteside was reading Jenna’s handout. “Seaside
with Santa, that’s cute. And I like all the suggestions you’ve made for
activities. I really like the idea of making use of the pier.”

“The weekend before Christmas?” Susan objected, frowning at her handout.
“Who’s going to want to come to something then? People will be getting ready to
go see family, and they’ll be finishing up their shopping.”

“Why shouldn’t they finish it here?” Jenna argued. “We have all kinds of
cute shops. We have great places for them to stay while they shop and plenty of
restau- rants where they can eat. They may even want to stay here for the
holidays. All we need is an event to lure them down. A festival could do it.
And who doesn’t like a parade? Look how many people turn out for the Macy’s
Thanksgiving Day parade.”

“Look at the floats they have in that parade,” Susan countered. “What sort
of floats would we be able to put together down here?”

“Okay, maybe not the most impressive parade ever,” Jenna admitted, “but I
bet we could come up with some- thing.”

“I could get some of my employees to dress up as mermaids,” said Kiki, “and
stick ’em on a flatbed truck strung with fake seaweed.” She grinned, clearly
taken with her idea.

“We need more for our Moonlight Harbor Queen and her princesses to do,” put
in Nora. “They love riding in those old convertibles. You’ll let us use your
vintage Caddy, right, Ellis?”

“Well...” Ellis hesitated. “If it rains...”

“Which it probably will,” said Susan. “Come on, people, be practical. You
know what it’s like down here in the winter, all wind and rain.”

Patricia pooh-poohed that objection. “We’ve survived plenty of storms.”

“Well, I think it’s a bad idea,” Susan said, scowling across the table at
Jenna.

Maybe it was. Jenna’s left eye began to twitch.

“I think it sounds great,” said Elizabeth MacDowell. She and her twin
sister, K.J., were new members of the chamber. They’d opened their arts and
crafts store, Crafty Just Cuz, in September, and it was already one of Jenna’s
favorite places to hang out.

“We do need more business in the winter,” said Cindy Redmond. “There’s no getting around it. And doing something for the holidays could be fun. I say we give it a try,” she added, and Jenna’s eye stopped twitching.

“We’d have to get moving right away,” Nora said, pulling another sheet of paper from her yellow tablet. “Who can help?”

“I can,” said Ellis.

“Me, too,” Brody said, smiling at Jenna. “Jenna, it’s your idea. You’ll have
to chair the committee.”

“Me?” she squeaked. Not that she couldn’t take charge. She was a firstborn, and Responsibility was her middle name. (Although her sister, Celeste, would probably argue that her middle name was Bossy.) She didn’t have a problem with rolling up her sleeves and getting to work, but she also didn’t want to offend old-timers like Susan Frank. “I’m sure someone else...” she began.

“Your idea, you have to do it,” Susan goaded.

Jenna raised her chin. “I can do it.” She’d survived rehabbing the Driftwood Inn. How much harder could it be to organize a festival?

In three months. Blink. Blink, blink, blink.

“Do I have a motion that we sponsor a Seaside with Santa Festival for the weekend before Christmas?” Brody asked.

“So moved,” said Ellis. “I’m with you, kid,” he told Jenna.

“I’ll second,” Nora said and reached across the back of Tyrella’s chair to give Jenna’s shoulder an encouraging pat.

“All in favor?” Brody asked.

“Aye,” chorused almost everyone.

“Opposed?”

“Nay,” Susan Frank said. “I’m telling you all, this is a bad idea. Make sure you put that in the minutes,” she told Cindy.

“Motion carries,” said Brody. He smiled down at Jenna. “Looks like we’re going to be putting on a holiday bash.”

“Holiday disaster,” Susan grumbled from her side of the table.

What did Susan know? Blink, blink, blink.

#Review ~ The Last True Cowboy By Laura Drake ~ @PBRWriter @ReadForeverPub @GrandCentralPub

The Last True Cowboy (Chestnut Creek Book 1) by [Drake, Laura]My Review of The Last True Cowboy:

Laura Drake became a must-read author for me from her very first book. Ms. Drake has an incredible gift with stories that are so emotional and really reach out to touch my heart. I could not wait to read this book once I had my hands on it. I found a comfy spot, grabbed my Kleenex box and settled in for a fabulous story. Ms. Drake didn't let me down, The Last True Cowboy is another shining example of her remarkable talent.

Carly Beauchamp is that sweet girl next door that found her true love in first grade. Carly is an independent, smart business lady that loves her family with her whole heart. I found my connection with Carly right away. She's one of the characters that I know I would love to enjoy a glass of tea with at Chestnut Creek Cafe and just catch up.

Austin Davis has been on the rodeo circuit and done well forever. He loves Carly with all his heart but he always thinks he's going to give it one more year and then start his life with Carly as a married couple. Austin is one of those truly good ole boys that love the thrill of the ride and the action going with the rodeo crowd. He really is a sweetheart with a heart of gold. I found a connection with Austin right away too. I don't think it's possible to not love this loyal cowboy that loves his girl, his family, friends, and animals.

Austin and Carly have been together forever. It's a given that one day they'll be married. Until the day never comes and Carly is fed up. She sets out on an adventure to figure out just what to do with her life if she isn't going to marry Austin. She has an adventure and that leads to another adventure. She hits the road with a friend's food truck that follows the rodeo circuit.

Austin and Carly certainly have a story to tell and it is one amazing story. It's packed full of emotions, drama, secrets that are revealed, and a first love that has stood the test the time but that time may be up now. There is wonderful family support behind Carly and Austin. I love when the family is involved in the storyline. It tends to add so much more to the background story and always helps me get a better glips into the characters. On top of that, the family and friends in this book are just phenomenal. There is a good dose of humor that had me laughing out loud. At other times I was reaching for the Kleenex box to wipe at the tears for both Austin and Carly. These two have a lot to work through if they are going to get that happily ever after that they have wanted forever.

If you are a fellow Laura Drake fan you must grab this book now! You are going to love just as much as I did. If you are a fellow fan of cowboy stories and haven't tried Ms. Drake's work yet, give this one a try. I think you'll fall in love with her work just as quickly as I did.

This is the first book in the Chestnut Creek series. I can't wait to see what wonderful stories Ms. Drake will have in store for us lucky readers with the next books in this series. I have no doubt they will be fabulous and absolutely must reads!

I was given the opportunity to read this fantastic story and it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you.

Blurb for The Last True Cowboy:

The Last True Cowboy (Chestnut Creek Book 1) by [Drake, Laura]This cowboy's got one last chance to prove himself.

Carly Beauchamp has loved cowboy Austin Davis since first grade. Ask anyone in their dusty, backwater New Mexico town of Unforgiven, and they'll say "Carly and Austin" the way some say "big trucks and country boys." But after years of waiting for a wedding ring, Carly's done with being a rodeo widow . . .

Austin never meant to put his career on the circuit before Carly. She's always been his future, his one and only. But now that she's moved on, he's beginning to see where he went wrong, and he'll do anything to win her back. The only thing is, Carly's suddenly acting differently, and she's definitely hiding a secret-one that will test the depth of their love and open up a whole new world of possibilities.

Excerpt:

He closed his eyes and took a deep breath before opening them. “I miss Cam. It was as if we were two parts of the same soul. I lived vicariously through him even while I worried constantly about him. It was one of the reasons I was constantly warning him to be careful. I was afraid to lose him.”
Ethan looked away and rubbed the back of his neck. “And then I did.”
She felt as if her heart were breaking all over again, not for her but for Ethan. He was so good to her. He even loved her. And she… “Ethan, I understand.”
His gaze returned to hers. Though she couldn’t see his face clearly, the limited light reflected off the sheen in his eyes.
She placed her hand on his cheek and rising on her toes brushed her lips across his in a feather-light kiss. She only meant to give comfort, but a spark of something else hit her heart.
She remained there, her lips close to his but not touching, wanting more but afraid to ask.
Ethan remained absolutely still, his breath mixing with her own.
He loved her but would never push her. It wasn’t his nature. She could walk away right now, but to what?
Nothing.
She stared at his mouth in the dim light. She wanted to live again. She wanted to feel again. Tilting her head, she pressed her lips more firmly against his, moving her hand down his stubbled jaw and behind his neck to pull him closer.
Ethan’s lips opened, and she slipped her tongue between them.
As his arms came around her, it was like waking from a dream. A slow burn flowed through her veins as he took control of the kiss and explored her mouth with his tongue. It was an unhurried exploration and heat built in her belly. When he pulled back to lick the underside of her top lip, she took her first deep breath. As she exhaled, tingles spread throughout her body.
He kissed the corners of her mouth before leaning his forehead against her own. “Ye catch my blood on fire, lass.”
