#Review ~ Christmas on Mistletoe Lane By Annie Rains ~ @annierainsbooks @ReadForeverPub @GrandCentralPub

Christmas on Mistletoe Lane: Includes a bonus short story (Sweetwater Springs Book 1) by [Rains, Annie]My Review:

I LOVE Christmas stories! I am devouring just as many as I can and there are some great ones this year. Christmas on Mistletoe Lane by Annie Rains is one of those fabulous stories that I enjoyed so much. This is the first book I have had to the chance to read by Annie Rains but I certainly will not be my last.

Kaitlyn Russo is in desperate need of a new town and a new start. She's a very talented interior designer and maybe the B&B that her grandmother left her is just the place to put those talents to work. She has to convince her co-owner that he needs to stick around and help her gets things started. It's also part of her Grandmother's will that they work together.

Mitch Hargrove left his hometown after a tragedy when he was young. He's returned home to discover he's been left part ownership in the B&B. He wants nothing but to get out of town and get started on his new job. With a little bit of change in his upcoming plans and some encouragement from Kaitlyn, he agrees to stick around and help with the B&B. He also takes on a temporary job to help out his friend in the police department.

I really enjoyed watching these two work together and get to know each other better. The more time they spend together the more their attraction for each other grows and feelings start to develop. Neither one is looking for love and Mitch sure isn't looking to stick around his hometown. There is a lot that these two are going to have to overcome if they are possibly going to find a happily ever after together. There is something from Mitch's past that he has to find a way to handle.

I loved Kaitlyn's ideas for designing the B&B and the theme that she comes up with for each of the guest rooms. Each of the guests that arrive to stay in the newly re-designed rooms are great and certainly add to the storyline. I love small town romance stories because the town can play such a great role in the storyline. I enjoyed meeting the other citizens around town and I can't wait to see what might be next in this new series. I know I will certainly be on the look out for more books by Annie Rains.

I was given the opportunity to read this fabulous Christmas story and it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you.

Christmas on Mistletoe Lane Blurb:

Christmas on Mistletoe Lane: Includes a bonus short story (Sweetwater Springs Book 1) by [Rains, Annie]
This USA Today bestselling author invites you to the delightful small town of Sweetwater Springs where the magic of Christmas brings to strangers together in this "story you won't forget" (RaeAnne Thayne, New York Times bestselling author).

Christmas is coming to the North Carolina mountains, and the air is fresh and crisp and filled with promise. After the devastating loss of her job in the big city, the small town of Sweetwater Springs feels like heaven to Kaitlyn Russo. She's inherited her grandparents' charming (if a little rundown) bed and breakfast, and it's just the new lease on life she needs. Only "heaven" comes with a catch-and a handsome and completely infuriating one at that.

After what he hopes will be a quick trip, Mitch Hargrove wants nothing more than to put his hometown in the rearview mirror. But his plans get derailed when he learns he's now half-owner of the Sweetwater B&B. The fact that he's given only two months to make the inn a success is a huge problem, but it's his pretty-and incredibly headstrong-partner who's the real challenge. With the holiday fast approaching and a grand re-opening looming, will Mitch keep running from the ghosts of Christmas past . . . or will he realize the true gift he's been given?

Includes the bonus short story "Midnight Clear" by Hope Ramsay!

#Review ~ Christmas Angels by Nancy Naigle ~ @nancynaigle @SMPRomance

My Review of Christmas Angels:

I love Christmas stories and I just can't get enough small-town romance stories. When you combine these two themes together I must admit I am in my absolute glory! Christmas Angles by Nancy Naigle is one of those books that is just a perfect fit for me. I must admit I don't believe I have read a book by Ms.Naigle before but after getting a taste of her work I know I will be on the lookout for more.

Liz Westmoreland is a brilliant creative lady that has been dreaming of buying a B&B since her Grandparents sold the B&B where she loved spending time in her childhood. This lady has her life put together and isn't known for throwing caution to the wind. I have to say I loved her courage and her excitement when she won the auction for the building that used to be her GrandParents B&B. She hasn't seen it for years but its been her dream for so long. I admired her for jumping for her dream without knowing much at all, just the memories of what used to be.

Matt Hardy is one of the very first people that Liz meets when she gets to Antler Creek. Little does she know that Matt is partly the answer to her prayers. This guy is truly one of the good guys. He's smart, creative, sweet, and knows just how to get things done. Did I mention he is also quite handsome and Liz is captivated not only by his know-how to get the job on the B&B started but also his incredible looks?

There is an instant spark between these two that starts out as a great friendship. They work really well together and get to know each other while fixing, renovating, and discovering hidden treasures with the B&B and the property too. The more time they spend together the more attraction and admiration grows between them. I loved watching this relationship grow and develope into so much more.

There are a lot of unpleasant discoveries along the way and a few incidents that have Liz questioning if she has made the right decision or if she should cut her loses. I loved that so many of the people from town pitch in to either assist with the cleanup, getting things done with the cabins so that Liz can live on the property, and when they all came together for a big surprise for Liz that means so very very much to her. That is truly what I love about small towns. The citizens always seem to know just what needs to be down and are more than happy to help out a fellow neighbor or in case a business that was truly loved by the community and they are all hoping will once again be running soon.

This is one of those fabulous stories that is written so well you can truly feel all the emotions, the fears of the unknown, the wonder if this is going to work out, the cheers when things are going well, the sweet romance between Liz and Matt, the kindness of the town coming together to make Liz feel welcome, and most of all that wonderful Christmas spirit. There just isn't anything else like the spirit of Christmas to make my heart fill with love and joy.

As I mentioned at the beginning this is the first time I have had the pleasure of reading a book by Nancy Naigle but it will certainly not be my last.

If you love sweet Christmas Romance stories as much as I do then you really need to grab this one. I think you will enjoy it. I know I certainly did.

I was given the opportunity to read this fantabulous story and it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you.

About Christmas Angels:

A heartwarming Christmas story filled with the magic and miracles of the holiday season by USA Today Bestselling author, Nancy Naigle.

Growing up, Liz Westmoreland dreamed of taking over her grandparents inn located in the small mountain town of Antler Creek only for it to be sold before she ever got the chance. While browsing the internet, she stumbles upon a listing for what looks to be the picturesque inn and it’s set to go to auction. Liz places a bid, and by a miracle, wins the auction. But when she gets there she finds the property in significant disrepair.

When Matt Hardy narrowly lost the inn and property that butted his land, he just hoped it wasn't another city slicker coming to make matters worse after the previous owners gutted the place for an art gallery. But the minute he recognized the sweet, freckle-faced girl from his childhood and heard her plans to reopen the inn, he jumps at the chance to help his childhood crush restore a place where he made so many fond memories.

While working on repairs, Liz and Matt discover her grandmother’s collection of angels in one of the cabins. When the angels start mysteriously showing up all over the inn, she begins to look at them as reassurance—that restoring the inn is what she's meant to do. But when an accident leaves Liz feeling like she made a mistake, will Matt—and the residents of Antler Creek—be able to show Liz that she's found a home? And possibly true love as well?

Excerpt from One Woman Only:

"May I have this dance?"

Kelly turned at the sound of Jonah's voice behind her. Dinner had ended. All three of the boys had given best man speeches and Eve had even given a very creditable matron of honor speech, considering she had only known Marilyn and Caleb a short time. Lots of toasts had been raised and finally the live band had struck up the music. Caleb led his bride onto the floor for a foxtrot—a dance more than half of the guests had no idea how to do, including her.

Facing Jonah she sighed inwardly at how scrumptious he looked. Sure, his face was pretty much displayed on his brothers' heads, too, but there was something different about Jonah. His nose was just a little crooked from when Bobby Hendricks had broken it in ninth grade and his eyes held an especially bright sparkle when he smiled. Maybe… Well, she didn't know what caused the difference between Jonah and his brothers. Whatever it was, she had never been fooled by the so-called identical nature of the identical triplets. She'd wanted to be his girl since elementary school. Thought she would be in high school. And then she’d forced every last thought of him from her mind from senior year on.

Until now.

"I don't know how to foxtrot."

He shrugged. "Who does except those over fifty?" He glanced at his folks, still alone on the dancefloor, although a few couples were wandering out to join them now. "We can pretend."

She mentally compared standing on the sidelines alone now that Mama Rio left the party, or being held in Jonah's arms. Smiling, Kelly held out her hands. "Just don't step on my toes, Jonah Goodman, or there'll be hell to pay."

"Yes, ma'am." Together they walked onto the dancefloor. He took her right hand in his left and placed his right hand on her waist. Fortunately for them, the music changed to a slow tempo. Kelly laid her head on Jonah's shoulder, and he tugged her closer as they swayed to the music.

"This is nice," he murmured.

"Yes it is," she replied. So very nice. He smelled good. Beneath the light citrus fragrance of his aftershave was a slight whiff of pure man with maybe a twinge of motor oil or something so Jonah it brought tears to her eyes.

He rubbed a path up to her shoulder blades and gave a squeeze. "You fit me perfectly, Kelly."

"I do?"

"You sure do. I think our hearts can feel each other beat."

Kelly chuckled. "Smooth talker. Face to face like this our hearts are on opposite sides."

"Hey! I'm trying to be romantic here."

She sighed. "Keep on. It's appreciated."

"You smell…good."

She felt his smile. Raising her head she gave him a mock glare. "Watch it with those pregnant pauses, buster."

He used his hand to press her head back to his shoulder. "You do smell good, though. This isn't the same perfume you wore in high school. That was—"

"Lilac," they said at the same time. Once more she raised her head to look at him. "How did you remember that?"

"I remember much more than you might think." He turned her and moved her closer to the door onto the patio. "Each spring when lilacs are in bloom memories come flooding back. Does that surprise you?"

"More like shocks me," she said, grinning. And then she laid her head on his shoulder once more, finding she liked it more and more there in his arms. She stepped slightly closer and his arm tightened about her.

"Well, after a while I thought lilac seemed too girlish. I like the vintage scents, so in college I wore Wind Song. Then Shalimar was the scent Brad liked me to wear." She felt Jonah stiffen when she mentioned her ex, and really she didn't blame him. "But when I grew up enough finally to take charge of my own life, I started wearing Chanel No 5. A complex fragrance for what I hope is a complex woman."

"It suits you. Complex and beautiful." He kissed her temple. "Want to step outside for a minute?"

"Sure. It is a little warm in here."

On the patio, they could hear the sounds of the people from the television networks packing up equipment, chatting and laughing. Stars shone brightly in the clear night sky. Wood smoke from someone's fireplace wafted through the air and static electricity fairly crackled in the crispness of the autumn air.

"This is my favorite time of year," Kelly said. "The heat of summer is gone and winter nights curled up with a hot drink and blazing fire are ahead."

"Not me. I'm a summer boy all the way."

"A hothead you mean?" she teased.

"Oh, I'm hot all right." He waggled his brows at her. Kelly laughed.

"I do seem to remember that about you."

"You used to be pretty hot yourself. Still are." He leaned in. His eyes flicked down to her lips. Kelly sucked in a breath. She should stop him, she really should.

#Review ~ Wrapped Up in You by Jill Shalvis ~ @jillshalvis @avonbooks

My Review of Wrapped Up in You:

It's Christmas time and the Christmas books have been coming out for a couple of months and I have devoured them like the delicious candy that they are. Wrapped up in You by Jill Shalvis was actually one of the first books I read this Christmas season and it was a great start to the Christmas books for me. I read this book the second it hit my hot little hands and I devoured it in one sitting. It is that good!

Ivy Snow has not had an easy life. Growing up was not easy and having a brother that is prone to getting into trouble and bringing trouble into Ivy's life has been frustrating and scary at times. She has taken her past issues and used them as a basis to help build her life as a strong, independent lady that can kick rear ends if need be. Ivy's life is going well, she has her dream business, she's starting to feel safe, and she is just starting to really let friends into her life.

Kel O’Donnell hasn't had an easy life either. He and his sister were raised by their grandparents. His Mom is in town now and she would like to build a relationship with both of her grown children. Kel isn't sure that he is ready to deal with all those issues from his past. He's visiting his cousin Caleb when he encounters the beautiful and very talented chef at Caleb's favorite food truck. The sparks fly instantly and it's not just the deliciously hot food that is heating things up.

Kel is there when Ivy is hit with a devastation discovery that affects her both emotionally and financially. He sticks around to help her work through the mess and take the steps to get things moving again quickly. Ivy and Kel are instantly attracted to each other but neither one of them is looking for love. They both have way too many things to deal with in their lives right now to add a complicated relationship to the mix. The attraction is just too strong to fight and quickly turns into a flaming passion.

Jill Shalvis has knocked another one out of the park with Wrapped up in You. The charters are charismatic, charming and very easy to bond with. The story is packed full of drama, suspense, deep and long-lasting friendships, family issues, and a hot and steamy romance. Overall this book rocked! I love Christmas stories and Jill Shalvis has created one that I could not put down.

This is the eighth book in the Heartbreaker Bay series. Don't worry if you haven't had a chance to read the previous seven books, Jill Shalvis has written each story to stand on its own just fine. If you have read the previous stories you are going to love the chance to catch up with old friends. I know I enjoyed visiting with all those friends I have made in all those fantabulous books in this series.

I was given the opportunity to read this phenomenal story and it has been my pleasure to share my thoughts with you.

About Wrapped Up in You:

It’s love. Trust me.
After a lifetime on the move, Ivy Snow is an expert in all things temporary—schools, friends, and way too many Mr. Wrongs. Now that she owns a successful taco truck in San Francisco and an apartment to call home, Ivy’s reinvented life is on solid ground. And she’s guarded against anything that can rock it. Like the realities of a past she’s worked hard to cover up. And especially Kel O’Donnell. Too hot not to set off alarms, he screams temporary. If only his whispers weren’t so delightfully naughty and irresistible.
Kel, an Idaho sheriff and ranch owner, is on vacay, but Ivy’s a spicy reason to give his short-term plans a second thought. Best of all, she’s a tonic for his untrusting heart, burned once and still in repair. But when Ivy’s past intrudes on a perfect romance, Kel fears that everything she’s told him has been a perfect lie. Now, if only Ivy’s willing to share, Kel will fight for a true love story.

Excerpt from Spirits of Christmas:

In the living room, Christa collected her Christmas decorations and placed them in reusable shopping bags. She wasn’t tall -- maybe five three -- but had gorgeous curves. Nothing felt better than a girl with padding. He glanced discreetly at her rounded bottom as she leaned over to unplug a plastic light-up reindeer.

“What are you doing?” he asked, wondering if she had decided to leave after all.

She glanced at him with big blue eyes. “You said the decorations are atrocious, so I’m putting them away. It’s your house.”

He furrowed his brow and shook his head. “Leave them. I don’t like Christmas.”

“Then why would I leave them?”

“You must like them. They don’t bother me.” He was lying. The house had been decorated on the night it happened. His mother had loved Christmas and always put up lots of decorations. They always had a huge tree that made the entire house smell like pine, but since that night twenty-five years ago, he couldn’t smell pine without smelling smoke and plastic tape.

“Are you okay?” Christa touched his arm.

He glanced into her concerned eyes. “Fine. Why?”

“You got really pale just now. Are you hungry maybe? I made cookies.”

“I don’t eat sugar.” He pulled off his gloves and stuffed them into his coat pockets before taking off his coat and tossing it onto the nearest chair.

“Then you’ll love these. The recipe is from my cousin, Mysti. She tries all these healthy dessert recipes. This one has no added sugar and no artificial sweeteners. They’re gluten free. Dairy free. Her husband jokes around that they’re taste free, but it’s not true. They’re really good, and I’ve been trying to lay off sugar, too. Except for French toast. I love that with maple syrup.”

“I don’t usually eat bread. I’ve been on a strict diet for a movie.”

“That must stink. I’d never want a job like that. When I want to be a glutton, no one better try to stop me.”

He laughed. From the few minutes he’d known her, he guessed that no one had better stop Christa from doing anything she set her mind to.

“That’s better. At least you’ve got some color back. For a second I thought you might hit the floor. You know, if you’re hungry, I can make you something other than cookies. I’m a maid, not a chef, but I can still cook pretty well. No bread. No sugar. How about a salad and chicken? I hear chicken is good for people on diets. I still can’t believe you need a diet.” She wrinkled her little upturned nose and glanced at him up and down. “You’re wicked lean. What are you playing?”

“I’m a former spy who gets into underground MMA fights to find my kidnapped twin brother, and I can’t say anymore about it or I’m in breach of contract.”

“Oh wow. I know my brother will be seeing that one. He’s fifteen and all about martial arts. He’s been training since he’s ten.”

“That’s great. I was about that age when I started. It changed my life.”

“Obviously. Not everyone is as successful at it as you are, though.”

“It doesn’t matter. It teaches focus, discipline, self-confidence, creativity. It’s great for kids. Wouldn’t you rather spend Christmas with your brother than here?”

#Spotlight ~ COLLATERAL DAMAGE by Paige Warren & Harley Wylde ~ @AuthorPaigeWarren @HarleyW_Writer

COLLATERAL DAMAGE
(OWNED BY THE MOB #1)
by Paige Warren & Harley Wylde

About COLLATERAL DAMAGE :

Power. Money. Fear. I’ve wielded them all. But not with Cerys. My angel, my light. My everything.

Cerys: Blind since birth, I’ve learned the hard way I can’t rely on my father. When he gets in too deep with the wrong sort of people, I find myself the property of Viktor. I’ve heard whispers of the mob and what they’re capable of and know I should be terrified, but it doesn’t take much for me to fall for Viktor. I see a side of him he seems to show only to me. His kisses make my knees weak, and just one touch makes me dream of forever. He makes me feel… special. Precious. Important. But what would a man like him want with collateral damage? He can have any woman he wants, and probably has. I don’t see a happily-ever-after in our future, no matter how much I might want one.

Viktor: Death and destruction cling to me, blood and violence just a way of life. I didn’t climb my way toward the top of the Bratva by being a saint. I may be gruff and dangerous, take what I want when I want, but when it comes to Cerys, I find that I can’t be harsh with her. She’s gentle. Sweet. An angel. My myshka. She’s the light to my darkness. Now that I have her, I know that I can’t let her go. I’ll make her mine in every way possible. Only one problem. Artur Orlov. He wants me to marry his daughter, but I won’t. I didn’t count on him retaliating by taking my myshka from me. I’ll get her back, and if she’s been harmed in any way, I won’t stop until every last man responsible has breathed their last.

#Review ~ Restless Rancher by Jennifer Ryan ~ @JenRyan_author @avonbooks

Restless Rancher: Wild Rose Ranch by [Ryan, Jennifer]
Restless Rancher
Wild Rose Ranch
By Jennifer Ryan

My Review of Restless Rancher:

Jennifer Ryan not only has a great way of telling a cowboy story but this lady rocks at Romantic Suspense too. Restless Rancher is a supreme example of Ms. Ryan's incredible talent. I absolutely loved the first book in the Wild Rose Ranch series and I was so excited to get this book in my hands so that I could devour it and devour it I did! I could not put down the Restless Rancher. The storyline is pivoting and so captivating. The characters are charismatic, easy to relate to and I remembered meeting them in Dirty Little Secret. So I settled in for a good read and I sure was not disappointed.

Austin Hubbard may have one day been looked upon as a spoiled little rich kid that had the world by the tail. Then his world fell apart. He was down on his luck, he was losing his grandfather's ranch and life was just about as low as it could get for Austin.  His father wants something that Austin has and he will do anything and I mean anything to get what he wants. There is a lot of drama in Austin's life right now and he sure can use some really good friends by his side.

Sonya Tucker has led what some may say was a very unconventional life but she was raised with love, care, and "sisters" that would do anything for each other. You see Sonya grew up on the Wild Rose Ranch where her mother worked for a living in a brothel. Sonya and her sisters, daughters of the other ladies that worked in the brothel, grew up together in a safe environment, were looked after and were loved.

Austin is in need of help to save his ranch and his friends think that Sonya just might be the lady to put in charge of the project. I have to say their first meeting was off to an... interesting start might be the right words. I won't spoil it for you but Sonya has a way of getting Austin's attention.

Austin and Sonya click after that first meeting though. The chemistry is there, the friendship is growing quickly, and these two may have a whole lot more in common than meets the eye. I loved watching Austin and Sonya get to know each other. Their romance was fun and intense all at the same time. There are so many things that could stand in the way of these two being able to complete their project and there is a danger that is out there too. So many many things to handle and so many many fabulous pages for me to flip through quickly to see what might be around the next corner.

This is the second book in the Wild Rose Ranch series but it will stand just fine on its own. If you have had the pleasure of reading the first book, Dirty Little Secret, then you are going to love the chance to catch up with Roxy, Noah, and Annabelle. This is an intense series that shows what can or could happen to children of women that are in this profession. It also shows how these ladies end up being a professional at Wild Rose Ranch. Some of the stories really break my heart and it fills me with joy to see that some of these girls are able to get out there and get a job and make a great life for themselves. I truly love this series and I can't wait to see what Ms. Ryan comes up with for the next book in this series.

So if you enjoy a great Cowboy Story then you really must grab this one, if you love Ms. Ryan's work as I do, then you need to grab this book, if you love a great story with plenty of drama with some tough issues then you need to grab this book! Grab the first book while you are shopping, you are going to love them both!

I was given the opportunity to read this fantastic book and it has been my pleasure to share my thoughts with you.

#BookSale ~ One Week to Win Her Boss by Barbara White Daille ~ @BarbaraWDaille

I am so excited to have Barbara White Daille here today. She has a great deal on her winter holiday story, One Week to Win Her Boss. This book is a sweet romance set in a small tourist town dedicated to Christmas. Her publisher has the ebook priced at 99 cents through November 18. I LOVED this book.

My Review One Week to Win Her Boss

As some of you may know from reading my reviews lately I LOVE Christmas stories. There is just something about a good romance story set at the magical time of year. One Week to Win Her Boss is one of those incredible stories that has all the ingredients that make it a fabulous story. There is romance, family, kids, Christmas, family drama, and romantic drama. The drama that makes you wonder how in the world these two people are going to work everything out.

Amber Barnett is a new Mom of an adorable little baby girl, Penny. She has a very loving family that wants to be there for her in a way her no-good ex-husband was. She wants to show everyone that she is strong, independent and able to take care of her and Penny.  Amber is one of the characters that I was able to bond with quickly.

Michael DeFranco is Amber's boss. He unexpectedly shows up at Snowflake Valley for Christmas. Michael is a nice guy, he's kind, caring, and has had it up to here with some of his family. This guy has had his fill of his family and some of their rotten shenanigans. He is not a family man and truly thinks he wants nothing to do with Amber and Penny. He accidentally ends up pretending to be involved with Amber to her family.

The Barnett family quickly wraps Michael in their arms and puts him to work with all that is going on. I loved watching Michael see what a real loving family could be like. They are NOTHING like his family. The more time Amber and Michael spend together the stronger their attraction and feelings for each other grow. I enjoyed watching these two get to know each other better.

This is one of those incredible stories that leaves you with that special Christmas time feeling of joy and happiness. I truly enjoyed this great story and I loved all the Barnett family. This is one family that has each other's backs as well as all the community. This book is part of the Snowflake Valley Series but it stands on its own just fine. I haven't had a chance the previous books in this series but I had no problem at all enjoying this story. I didn't feel like I was missing anything at all. I can't wait to see what might be next in this series.

I was given the opportunity to read this incredible book and it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you.

About One Week to Win Her Boss:

Single mom Amber Barnett loves family, kids, Christmas…and unfortunately, her boss, confirmed bachelor Michael DeFranco. It's a crush she really needs to get over. Except, when she’s temporarily forced from her apartment, her only option is to stay at Michael’s private ski lodge, where she's the housekeeper. No problem. Her handsome boss rarely visits Snowflake Valley unexpectedly, plus he’s spending the holidays with his family. Or so she thinks…

A stormy Christmas Eve reunion leaves Michael seeking the solitude of his lodge, where he finds Amber in residence—and in trouble. Attempting to save her from her matchmaking family, he announces they’re a couple. His good deed backfires when they’re instantly included in each and every holiday event in town. So much for solitude.

Only the more time he spends with the beautiful, cheery brunette, the more he yearns to make things real between them. But he and Amber want different things, and Michael could never be the family man she's looking for.

An excerpt from One Week to Win Her Boss:

Amber stole a glance at Michael in the driver’s seat of his SUV.   This morning, she had wondered why the mention of work made him look so grim. Now she knew. It hurt her heart to know he didn’t love his job the way she loved hers. Or that…

Oh, don’t go there. Bad enough that in just minutes she would have to pretend to be “together” with Michael. She couldn’t let anyone see how she really felt about him.

This could turn out to be the worst week of her life. Or the best—if you believed in miracles.

After pulling onto the street she indicated, he said, “We probably should have prepped.”

“For Christmas?”

His laugh seemed to fill the enclosed space. It definitely filled her heart with joy.

Don’t go there, either.

“No, not for Christmas. For the afternoon we need to get through.”

She blinked. So much for joy. And what about the big plan to have Scrooge enjoy the holiday? Hopefully, the jury was still out on that one. “Turn here. This is it.”

He pulled up close to the snow-swept front steps of her family home and came around to help her out of the SUV. When he took her arm, her startled breath of surprise misted in the cold air. A dead giveaway. A visual reminder to watch her reactions today.

As she moved to the rear seat to get Penny, he asked, “How many are there in your family?”

“Ten, counting my parents and the baby. You’ve met Callie and Lyssa. They’re the two oldest, then me. After us, we have a set of twin sisters and two younger brothers.”

He looked up at the house she had lived in until a short time ago. “Big place. You and the others are out on your own?”

“No, actually, they all still live at home.”

His eyes widened, as if her answer had surprised him.  “What makes you so independent?” he asked.

She hesitated, fiddling with Penny’s blanket. What could she say? Definitely not that after her ex had left she had been too full of wounded pride—and too ashamed of her mistake in marrying him—to go back home. And positively not that Michael had been her hero, stepping in with his job offer at the point she had needed it most. “I just…like living on my own. With Penny.”

“Yeah. Amber…” He paused, looking down at her, then reached out to trace her cheek with one finger. A cold and padded finger, covered by his glove. And still she felt the warmth of him. Or thought she did. He smiled. “Just testing to make sure you wouldn’t jump. Doing this job right is going to involve us getting close. And probably some touching.”

Getting close and touching sounded so good. So right. But the word that stood out to her was job.
