#Interview ~ The You-Song and Daughter of Jerusalem by Joanne Otto ~ @pauletteharper

Write Now Literary Book Tours is pleased to be coordinating a book tour for author Joanne Otto. This is a two-month book tour for her books: The You-Song and Daughter of Jerusalem. This tour will run June- July, 2018.

Q&A with Joanne Otto:
What inspired you to write The You-Song?
In 2002, when the idea first came to me, I had recently been reading and following through with activities from Julia Cameron’s inspiring book, The Artist’s Way, as well as attending a workshop on self-awareness. So it’s not surprising that the metaphor of the individual as a unique song of the Creator came to me strongly at that time. That accounts for the content of the book, but the form it took had everything to do with the dyslexic kids I’d been teaching. The lessons I’d been using were carefully sequenced to help the students consistently experience success. So each word used in writing The You-Song had to either conform to the rules of phonics or be so frequently used that it would be recognizable on sight. The book had to be user-friendly for those kids as well as present them with an encouraging message about their uniqueness and potential. I guess you could say that my love for those kids was the inspiration behind the book.

Whom do you see as its target audience?
Children of about age 3 to 7. I envision the text and the illustrations sparking important conversations between them and the adults who care about them. And I see this book as being potentially among the first that they can actually read for themselves.

Its extended song metaphor is a pretty sophisticated theme for little ones, isn’t it?
It has been exciting to see how readily they catch onto it. Before the illustrations had materialized, I shared the manuscript with a number of children, none of whom had difficulty understanding it. One of them even made a suggestion that had an impact on one of the illustrations. Her mother had recently given birth to a baby girl, and she was really comforted by the statement that “no other song can take your place.”  She suggested that it should be accompanied by a picture of a child embracing her expectant mother. And that is exactly what has been done.

How did you come up with all those heart-warming illustrations?
It was clear from the start that for the book to come alive for young children, it had to have pictures. At first I assumed that I’d need to find an artist to do them since drawing is not among my talents. But then the thought of photographs came to mind. Our daughter Meghan Williams is a talented professional graphic designer with a degree in applied photography. When I approached her with the idea, she recommended that we tap the resources of a stock photo website. That way we would have a huge selection of photos to choose from with built-in permission to publish them. Between us we came up with a perfect illustration for each page, and Meghan then designed the layout for all of them, including the cover design.
How long did all this take?
Only a few months once our course was set, but about ten years elapsed from the time the first draft was written until the illustrations fell into place and a path to publication opened up to me. Meanwhile I came back to the manuscript from time to time, tweaking it and making revisions.

What would you like your young readers to take away from The You-Song?
I’d like them to come away feeling encouraged about their ability to read. But even more importantly, I’d like them to feel the joy of their own uniqueness and have some sense of their potential for being a positive influence on the world around them. I’d like them to know that they matter—and so does everyone else.

About The You-Song:

The You-Song celebrates, in a way young children can understand, the unique and vital place each of us occupies in God's world and encourages them to fill their place in it with joy. Written by a teacher who's helped many children overcome reading challenges, "The You-Song" is user-friendly, consisting of words that are either familiar or easy to decode. Lavishly illustrated with nearly 50 heart-warming photos, it's also fun to read aloud to pre-readers.

Genre: Juvenile Nonfiction

 About Daughter of Jerusalem:
Daughter of Jerusalem" takes its 21st-century readers on a journey back to the first-century world of a young rabbi named Yeshua—better known to us as Jesus. Mara, the young heroine of this story, gets to mingle with the crowds who come to hear him teach during his visits to Jerusalem and, finally, to meet him face to face in a brief, life-changing encounter—one that comes at no small cost to herself. For middle-grade readers who want to use the book as a springboard for deeper study, there are Bible references and questions on each chapter, as well as a glossary. For others, the story itself will be the full journey.

Genre: Christian Fiction

#Review ~ The Cottages on Silver Beach by RaeAnne Thayne ~ @raeannethayne @SarahBurningham

My Review:
You know the saying you can't judge a book by it's cover? Well, there is one author I know of that you can judge a book by its cover, RaeAnne Thayne. The story inside is just as fabulous as the cover is beautiful. The Cottages on Silver Beach is a shining example of yet another fabulous story behind a beautiful cover.

Megan Hamilton is one busy lady. She runs the Inn that has been owned by her family for years, she shoots beautiful photos, and she is always there to help out with her niece and nephew. Megan is one of those characters that I felt a connection with right away. She loves her family and friends and she is very protective of them. One of the people she feels the need to protect her family from just rented the cabin next to her's at the Inn.

Elliot Bailey is in town for his sister's wedding reception. He's also recuperating from a gunshot wound, and wondering just where his career may go from here. When he booked his cabin at the Inn he didn't expect Megan to be in the cabin next door. Megan is the younger sister of the man that was his best friend. An unexpected event changed their relationship and put a heavy strain on Elliot's relationship with the Hamilton family.

There is a lot of tension between Megan and Elliott that makes for some interesting moments. There is also a deep attraction that has been hiding just under the surface for both of them. Then there is a past full of questions to be answered and wounded feelings that need to be mended. An unexpected road trip is just the thing for these two to find some answers, explore some feelings, and maybe find a way to a happily ever after.

It was so nice to visit Haven Point again with a nice little trip to Hope's Crossing. I always enjoy visiting with old friends to catch up with everyone and see what has happened since my last visit. If you have read the previous books in this series or the Hope's Crossing series, you too will enjoy catching up with old friends.

Ms. Thayne has written yet another fabulous story with characters that truly do feel like friends, in a small town setting that has all those characteristics that can only be found in a small town. The storyline is intriguing with romance, family issues, friendships, and a touch of mystery that has left a door open for more questions to be answered later.

I was given the opportunity to read this incredible story and it has been my pleasure to share my thoughts with you.

About The Cottages on Silver Beach:

Years after betraying her, he’s back in Haven Point…and ready to learn the truth

Megan Hamilton never really liked Elliot Bailey. He turned his back on her family when they needed him the most and it almost tore them all apart. So she’s shocked when Elliot arrives at her family’s inn, needing a place to stay and asking questions that dredge up the past. Megan will rent him a cottage, but that’s where it ends—no matter how gorgeous Elliot has become.

Coming back home to Haven Point was the last thing bestselling writer Elliot Bailey thought he’d ever do. But the book he’s writing now is his most personal one yet and it’s drawn him back to the woman he can’t get out of his mind. Seeing Megan again is harder than he expected and it brings up feelings he’d thought were long buried. Could this be his chance to win over his first love?

Excerpt:

The state dinner at the White House was in full swing. Waiters were busy delivering food and pouring wine, as guests ate and chatted with others seated at their tables.

Julianna picked at her dinner, some sort of beef dish with quirky vegetables, and continued to study Lodatian President Georges and Mrs. Marella de la Aerelli, as they chatted quietly with the U.S. president and his wife. Marella barely looked up from her plate, and conversation with her hosts appeared to be minimal. God, that is so not the Marella I know. She hasn’t even acknowledged me and I sent her an email informing her that I would be here.

Julianna set her fork down on her plate and nudged her husband, Little River, Wisconsin Police Chief David Manders. “Something’s wrong.” Julianna whispered. “Marella looks wrong. Maybe she’s just tired after the campaign, but she looks sick. Too thin and too pale. And she isn’t smiling. Marella is always smiling, even when she feels like shit. And she hasn’t even looked at me. Why is she ignoring me? Something is not right. I can feel it.”

David looked at his wife and tried to hide his smile. “Jules, you find a conspiracy behind every door these days,” he said quietly. He looked around to ensure that the other four couples seated at their table were otherwise engaged. “I vote for tired, no, make that exhausted. My God, five months ago, she was a farm wife in Lodatia, now she’s been thrust into the international spotlight as the wife of the President. That would exhaust anyone. I know if you ran for president, it would have a negative impact on me.”

Julianna smirked. “If I became President, sir, it would have a negative impact on both of us.”
David sighed and ran a hand through his short, silver hair. His piercing blue eyes gazed at his wife, his fondness apparent. “Well, instead of jumping to conclusions, let’s wait until the reception at the Lodatian Embassy. There are a lot of rules and protocols for visiting dignitaries. Maybe it just isn’t appropriate to buddy up to an old friend at a state dinner. Once you get up close and personal with Marella, you can get a better fix on things. That woman has been through the wringer, what with that opposition group trying to assassinate her husband not once, but twice. I imagine the stress of clinging to Lodatia’s newly formed democratic government is a kind of like hanging on to a cliff, knowing that if you fall, there will be no net to catch you. Cut her some slack and do not tell her she looks awful.”

STRAY MAGIC: A Strays Novel By Kelly Meding ~ @KellyMeding

STRAY MAGIC:
A Strays Novel
By Kelly Meding

About the Book:
Shiloh Harrison was hoping for a few days off to recover from a particularly nasty assignment, preferably with the help of the talented hands (and, well, the rest of his body too) of her sexy boyfriend, Vincent. But when a group of vampires takes an entire trailer park hostage, there’s nothing to do but make her apologies and get to the scene.

Such is the life of a Federal Marshal in the Paranormal Investigators Unit.

Yet this isn’t like her typical track-and-nab case: something is going on that has vampires scared, and it takes all her strength not to imagine what could frighten such powerful creatures. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have that option. Her boss is MIA, someone is snatching vampires, and there’s a ticking clock that can only end one way: a bloodbath.

Unless she can stop it.

About the Author:
Born and raised in Southern Delaware, Kelly Meding survived five years in the hustle and bustle of Northern Virginia, only to retreat back to the peace and sanity of the Eastern Shore. An avid reader and film buff, she discovered Freddy Krueger at a very young age, and has since had a lifelong obsession with horror, science fiction, and fantasy, on which she blames her interest in vampires, psychic powers, superheroes, and all things paranormal.

#Interview ~ Hunters’ Watch Brigade: The Game by Paula Millhouse ~ @pmillhouse

Hunters’ Watch Brigade:
The Game
by Paula Millhouse

Interview with Paula Millhouse:

Crystal: Today I have the pleasure of hosting Paula Millhouse today! Welcome, Paula! I'm so excited to have you here today!

Paula: Hi Crystal! Thank you for hosting me on your blog today during the frenzy of release week for my new novel. So nice to meet everyone. Big cyber waves all around.

Crystal:  Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?

Paula: I’m Paula Millhouse, and I write stories where fantasy, romance, and suspense collide. My latest release, Hunters’ Watch Brigade: The Game released June 15th, and I’m super-thrilled to share the novel with readers. It’s an urban fantasy with strong paranormal romance elements. I wrote it for readers who like a little magic and adventure mixed in with their romances.

Crystal: Do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?

Paula: Thank you for asking. In this scene, my main characters Samantha and Max have rounded up a pack of poisonous rats in the New York Museum of National History. Max is dealing with his family’s curse.

“I’m going in.” Sam tested the bounds of the barrier with the forked end of Atlantis. Then she disappeared inside. A misty fog emanated from the trident and surrounded her. Max couldn’t see anything. The agents all reared back, various expressions of concern on their faces.
Bolts of lightning illuminated inside the shield, and one ear-shattering boom of thunder deafened him. Max lost control, the shield disappeared, and he fell back onto his ass, striking his head on the cool marble tile. “Ahhh!” He curled onto his side into a fetal position. “Not again!”
Pure molten magic raced through his veins. The price of overusing the magic riveted him to the floor, and he shook with the force. Damn this curse. Would he ever get used to this searing pain? His body contorted, and he shifted halfway back to his native form—a thirty-five-pound Maine Coon cat—but not all the way.
“Max!” Sam was suddenly there, shaking his shoulders, touching him, saying his name. “Max! Wake up! Baby, are you okay?”
His mother had told him that if he chose to shift, his path would not be an easy one. But it was all worth it to hear Sam calling his name. Blinding pain seared up his spine. The sheer torture fed around in his head, like a hungry creature that wanted to put his eyes out. The burning of the transformation flashed through his lungs, stealing his breath, throwing him into a coughing fit. But as long as she was okay, things were right in his world.
Her touch calmed him. He’d do anything to protect her, because that was the calling he’d chosen. He’d even given up one of his nine lives to save her. That’s how much he loved Sam. He was a demigod’s guardian, all the way down to his unique strands of DNA. It was what it was.

Crystal: Where did you come up with the idea for your latest release?

Paula: Everyone’s playing games on their smartphones these days. Seems like no one ever talks to anyone anymore, right? That bothers me in real life. So, I wondered what would happen if someone designed a game app that got totally out of control and affected a massive amount of people. Sam and Max have tons of challenges to face in The Game, which turns into a paranormal scavenger hunt in New York City.

Crystal: What are you currently working on?

Paula: I appreciate you asking, Crystal. I’m working on the third book in the Hunters’ Watch Brigade series which is due out later this year. Sam and Max and all the characters in their universe have more stories to tell, and I’m writing them as fast as I can.

Crystal: Do you have any special routine that you follow when you are writing?

Paula: Since I have an evil day job, I get up three hours early in order to write. I’m fresher after rest, so that’s when my imagination kicks in. I set a timer and write in sprints, my favorite way to get tons of words on the page. I listen to movie instrumentals or brainwave power music to get into the scenes with Sam and Max, and the agents of the Hunters’ Watch Brigade.

Crystal:  Did you have to do a lot of research for this book or any other? If so do you have a fascinating fact that you have learned you would like to share with us?

Paula: Great question, Crystal. The Game required tons of research! From a trip to Manhattan for RWA 2015, several trips to my local library, and wide internet searches this book is heavy with travel facts.
Fascinating Fact: Zeus, who makes an appearance in The Game, is known as the patron god of hospitality.
Oh, and one more! The Statue of Liberty was originally intended to be a Lighthouse. How cool is that?

Crystal:  Who are some of your favorite authors that you like to read?

Paula: Bonnie Gill writes humorous paranormal romances about Cryptid hunters in her L.A.M.P.S. series. Jeanienne Frost and her Cat and Bones series. Suzanne Johnson, D. B. Reynolds, and Deborah Harkness, to name a few. I also like Steven James, who writes multiple POV thrillers. Oh, and of course, Jude Deveraux. There’s so many!

Crystal:  Is there a genre you haven't written that you would like to try?

Paula: Sometimes I think the challenge of Historical Paranormal Romance might be fun.

Thank you so much for having me here today, Crystal! It’s been fun chatting and celebrating release week for Hunters’ Watch Brigade: The Game. I hope your readers join in on the scavenger hunt and go grab themselves a copy of the book today.
