Chapter 4
I felt as if I were wearing gumboots stuck in mud. I had my jacket on, my car keys in hand, but I couldn’t move. Two hours since Zoë left, and I stood in the middle of my kitchen having a make-believe conversation that was not going well.
‘What did your intruder look like, ma’am?’
‘I don’t know. His features were hidden.’
‘We’ll dust for prints.’
‘He wore gloves.’
‘What make of vehicle was he driving?’
‘I never saw.’
‘Maybe you heard a truck?’
‘I don’t think so.’
‘We’ll need you to have an examination.’
‘He didn’t rape me.’
‘And you expect us to do what exactly?’
I leaned back against my kitchen cupboards and threw the keys on the counter. They skated six feet across the tiled granite counter top like a jackrabbit on skis and crashed into the side of the refrigerator. My body jerked in reflex.
For a long time I didn’t move. The ringing in my ears and hammering in my head incapacitated my ability to plan. My eyes focused on the dead space between me and the deep ledged kitchen window over the sink, past my crystal teddy window ornament to the outside. The landscaped back yard that I’d toiled to make a beautiful place of colour and fragrance lasting six months out of the year, and this house that I’d fashioned into a comfortable and cozy home, now felt as cold and lonely as a plywood shelter in the middle of a Saskatchewan dust storm. He had done that to me, the intruder. Worse, I had let him.

First Look:

Incredible.

That was the only word in his head as the aftershocks trembled through their bodies.

Incredible.

And then he came down.

Not in a nice, slow, gentle descent, either.

Nope, he crashed like a plane plummeting from the sky to ram into a mountainside.

He’d just had sex.

With Ava.

His ex-wife. The only woman he’d ever loved. The only one he’d ever wanted to love. The one who’d broken his heart into tiny little pieces and tossed them aside.

Shit.

His body still slick with sweat, the scent of Ava wrapped around him like a second skin, Elijah wondered if she realized that while extracting her promise of no regrets, he hadn’t offered the same.
After all, Elijah knew just how pointless promises could be. Especially the ones between him and Ava.

His body spent, his mind worn, he couldn’t find anything left to offer up on the altar of past regrets, though. He wrapped his arm tighter around her shoulders. Ava responded by snuggling closer, her thigh nestled between his as she shifted her chin into the indention where his shoulder met his chest. Her breath fluttered over his throat, soft and easy in sleep.

Regret?

Oh yeah, he knew he’d regret this in the morning. Hell—he glanced out the window, gauging the time from the angle of the moon—it was nearing dawn and the regret was already winding through him. Shoving aside pleasure, easing out satisfaction.

Closing his eyes against it, he drifted into sleep with her hand entwined with his, the twisted band of her ring rubbing gently between his fingers.

And he knew it for the talisman it was, the hope that lifted him from his nightmares.

If only for tonight.

Because nobody knew better than Elijah that tonight was all they had.

choice. . . .

Available for Preorder - Ready to Read July 4

Excerpt:

Of all the people to discover him, Royce hadn’t expected such a beautiful young
woman. Simone the other native had said.
She couldn’t have been older than twenty. Her light brown skin complemented her
dark hair. The ends grazed her waist. He detected a bit of European in her
exotic features, and island custom in what little she wore. Simply a red silk
cloth tied about her hips. Her breasts were full and lush, begging for a man’s
touch.
Wary that she might scream, he’d released her quickly and had expected her to run.
She checked his arms, hands, and head. He supposed for injuries.
At last, she finished and peeked at him.
Cautiously, he pushed up, hoping she wouldn’t bolt.
She sat back on her heels.
Needing an ally here, he tried a smile.
Hers was wondrous, broad and carefree, no deception or caution in her soft brown
eyes.
His arrival would eventually change that. No better way to destroy a woman’s trust
and happiness than wresting her from an island Eden to imprisonment, lifelong
slavery, repeated rape, and birthing children only to have them torn away.
Guilt and shame churned in his gut. Fear for his family competed with the other
emotions. “Are you the only one here?” Besides, Tristan, his crew, and the
other island woman. Their conversation had mentioned Tristan, but not Diana or
Peter.
Simone tilted her head. A tress fell across her breast. Confusion swept her lovely
face.
Royce had deliberately spoken English so she wouldn’t know he’d heard her speak
French earlier when he’d feigned unconsciousness. He next tried Portuguese and
received her same bewildered reaction. At last, he used her language.
Her eyes lit up. “My people live here. Once we have you in the stone house, I can
see to your injury.” She touched his thigh. “Does it hurt?”
Not as much as when he’d arrived on this shore. “My head is worse.”
She brushed back his hair, her touch as light as an angel’s.
Despite his callous intent here, and what prudence demanded, his lids slid down, his
heart pounding as hard as it had when she’d stroked his ribs.
She explored his wound carefully. “I can make a potion to take your pain away. As
soon as the men arrive I—”
Voices and footfalls interrupted.
Tristan led the way, his manner and appearance precisely as rumor had described: tall,
golden skin, blond hair, and light eyes that offered naught except challenge
and possibly death if anyone dared threatened him or those he loved. Following
him was an equally tall man with long red hair, his face and chest freckled.
Had to be James Sullivan, Tristan’s friend and former quartermaster during
their piracy.
An adolescent boy, fifteen or so, brought up the rear. Gangly, as youth were prone
to be, he had long dark hair streaked with blond, his skin brown from days
outdoors. Diana’s brother, Peter. His features matched Bishop’s depiction.
Tristan, James, Peter, and island men trained their pistols on Royce.
The land to their side jutted out, rocky and reddish as those found in Madagascar.
A white woman stood there, wind whipping her dark hair and simple sheath-like gown
in violet silk. Her slightly rounded belly didn’t prove pregnancy, though Royce
would have staked his life on it. She wore a choker about her throat, the
diamonds glittering in the light.
Royce’s pulse pounded. Diana was here, as Bishop had predicted. Along
with too many armed men, as Royce had feared, though all islanders, not
pirates.

#GiveAway ~ Promises Part 3 By A.E. Via ~ @AuthorAEVia

Promises Part 3
By A.E. Via

 ~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Synopsis:

A bounty hunter’s partners to lovers’ story.
The hunt is on… and he’s the prey.

Bradford (Ford) King was sure he had the rest of his life mapped out. Though he was no longer a SEAL Lieutenant, his brother was home safe and he had a job that still allowed him to satisfy his hunger for hunting bad guys. Life was simple, no distractions or complications – at age forty-six – that’s all Ford wanted. What he didn’t want was his work partner, sniper/watchman, Dana, giving him s**t all the time.

Dana Cadby had grown up labeled a roughneck from the wrong side of the tracks. He’d fought, scrounged, and survived despite a father that constantly told him he couldn’t. Dana pulled himself up by his own boot straps and made a name for himself in the marksman community. He’d been Duke’s bounty watchman for five years. It was his job to ensure their safety, watch their backs. At thirty-three, he was trusted, well respected by his peers, his bosses, his friends… so why couldn’t he earn the same respect from his partner?

Dana knew he was bisexual before he graduated high school. He also knew he was attracted to the huge, 6’3”, SEAL from the moment he and his brother came to join their team. It wasn’t easy for him to tamp down his immediate reaction to Ford’s thick muscles, full beard, and dark eyes. Still, Dana exhibited nothing but professionalism towards him, not wanting to make his ‘straight’ partner uncomfortable.

After Dana took back his ex-girlfriend, he’d noticed an intensification in Ford’s bad attitude. One that turned aggressive and downright antagonistic, and Dana was damned if he’d just lay down and take it. He was gonna make that man respect him if it was the last thing he did.

When Duke sends Dana and Ford out to track down their most dangerous bounty yet, they both embrace the fact that they make one hell of a team… but they fight tooth and nail against the powerful intimacy brewing between them.
Beware: When Ford and Dana connect, no fugitive can hide from the hunter and his watchman.

This story is a part of a series but can stand alone. It does not end on a cliffhanger and has a HEA.
Disclaimer: This book is about MM romance, albeit there is a very brief MF scene.

Ford
Ford finished showering and grooming his beard that Dana seemed to like so much. Who knew the man was so into hair? He’d dated women so much, Ford thought his rough features and hairy body would’ve been a turnoff to him. Ford couldn’t’ve been more wrong. He’d just finished throwing on a pair of blue US NAVY sweats and a white tank top when his doorbell rang. He may not look as gorgeous as Dana, but he was smelling clean and had even dabbed on a little aftershave. It was as much primping as he could manage.
Ford opened the door, and sure enough, there he was, smelling and looking just as fine as always. Dana had obviously showered too, because his hair was still wet and combed back, making it look jet-black. He had on loose jeans with a simple black and gray retro Jimi Hendrix t-shirt with dark leather boots. His body filled out everything beautifully. While Dana wasn’t as big as Ford, he wasn’t small. He had strong arms and legs, which he used to his advantage on the streets. But Ford’s eyes were glued to Dana’s hard abs and solid chest under the snug shirt.
“You can keep staring, but can you do it with me inside? These bags are heavy, babe.” Dana’s voice, even his eyes, were full of edge and amusement.
Fuck. Ford closed his mouth, not sure if he’d drooled on his shirt or not, and stepped aside to let a still-smiling Dana into his home.
“Well, thank you.” Dana kissed him quickly on the mouth on his way past. Not enough. He went into Ford’s kitchen, dropping the three full grocery bags on the counter. Ford looked bewildered. What was his brat up to now? He never told Dana he had to bring his own food.
“What are you doing?” Ford asked, leaning against the counter while he watched Dana maneuver around his kitchen, washing his hands before he began to unload the bags.
“I’m going to make us dinner.” Dana winked. “I’m starving. Did you eat already?”
“No.” Ford pulled out two beers and popped the tops on them. “I was gonna order Chinese or something.”
“Well, no need.”
“You’re going to cook?” Ford said skeptically, still looking oddly around at the scattered ingredients.
“Yes, Ford. I’m going to cook. It’s not that complicated.”
“You’re cooking nachos?”
Dana looked in his cabinets until he found a small pan and put it on the range, dropping a small hunk of ground chuck in before turning back to Ford. “Good grief. I didn’t say I was attempting a leg of lamb with mint jelly. It’s only cheap ground beef with a bunch of crap on top. I’m not making a five-course meal, man.”
Ford shrugged. “I’m a little surprised but, by all means. Go right ahead. I’ll be in here watching TV.”
Dana grabbed Ford’s arm. “Um. What the hell you think this is? All In the Family? You’re not gonna sit on your ass while I cook and call you when dinner’s ready. Get your fine ass in here and help.”
“I don’t cook.” Ford smirked.
“I don’t need you to.” Dana picked up the tomatoes and tossed one at Ford. “Start cutting. You can’t fuck up a tomato. Any way you cut it, we’ll put it on the pile. Same for the lettuce and avocado.”
Ford was still looking baffled when Dana rolled his eyes and moved him to the edge of the counter, put the knife in his hand and started to show him how to dice. It was cute and silly at the same time. Ford knew he could cut up a tomato and shred some lettuce, but Dana’s arms around him while he manipulated Ford’s big hand around the knife were too endearing to put a stop to.
“See. Easy. Just keep cutting like that,” Dana said softly, leaving his arms around Ford’s waist while he did his menial job. Next thing he knew, he felt soft lips against the back of his neck, moving gently across his heated skin. Then Dana’s hands were massaging his chest and abs as they moved lower and lower.
“You’re gonna make me cut my thumb off.” Ford put the knife down and turned in Dana’s arms.
“Sorry. Got distracted,” Dana whispered.
