INTERVIEW:

Crystal: Today as part of this Goddess Fish Promotions Virtual Book Tour, I have the chance to ask Alexandra Forry a few questions. Welcome Alexandra, I'm so happy to have you here today. Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?

Alexandra: I’m Alexandra Forry, author of two contemporary romances, Timeless Endings and Wildflower. I live in my hometown, Las Vegas NV. I just love living in my town because you have everything at you finger tips. Top of line, restaurants, entertainment, bars, night clubs, and such. There is a feeling of joy I get when I am driving down the Las Vegas Strip. I could not image living anywhere but here.

Crystal: Do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?

Alexandra: In chapter 2, the main lovers met up at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area that is outside of Las Vegas. So romantic and a must read. That is one of my favorite scenes that I had ever written.

Crystal: Where did you come up with the idea for Timeless Endings?

Alexandra: It just came to me one night when I was very bored, it was meant to be a Fanfic to the 1995 movie Casino but I figured why not turn it into a book?

Crystal: What are you currently working on?

Alexandra: Ah, you have to wait and see!

Crystal:  Do you have any special routine that you follow when you are writing?

Alexandra: I really don’t have a special routine I just sit down and write “chapter one” to the “the end”, I don’t go back and forth.

Crystal:  Did you have to do a lot of research for this book or any other? If so do you have a fascinating fact that you have learned you would like to share with us?

Alexandra: I spent over a year on researching the Las Vegas Mafia before I got the idea of Timeless Endings. I can’t really say that I learned any fascinating fact. If I did, I can’t say it. “OMERTA”

Crystal: Who are some of your favorite authors that you like to read?

Alexandra: I like reading LaVyrle Spence, she is the author whom I would love to sit down and have tea with. Other author’s that I like to read is Nora Roberts, Danielle Steel. I love reading books that are by my dear friends. :)

Crystal: Is there any genre you haven't written that you would like to try?

Alexandra:  Murder mystery would be something I want to try my hand at someday.

BLURB:

Evelyn turned toward the lights of the city. The view was breathtaking as she stood looking down on Las Vegas, lovingly wrapped in Tony’s arms. It was a moment she would keep deep in her heart, forever. “Look at this—The City of Gold!” Evelyn exclaimed as Tony kissed her forehead. “And it’s all ours, Eve!”

Thus begins a heartwarming and harrowing tale of life and forbidden love lost to one generation and found in the next. Caught between a turbulent love triangle that shook the very foundations of the Mafia’s Las Vegas Empire, and a deadly struggle for wealth and power, Mob Boss and “King of Las Vegas” Tony Torino, his mistress hustler and onetime showgirl Evelyn Rosenberg, and her husband top Chicago mobster Charlie “Gus” Rosenberg live and love in defiance of the violent and unforgiving laws of the Mafia. All that remains is Evelyn’s carefully preserved diary left by Gus to be discovered by his daughter Adriane and Tony’s son Victor as they pack up her late father’s belongings. Through the vivid and brilliant use of flashbacks, juxtaposed with current events, we witness one of the most beautiful and ill-fated love stories of the last century. As Victor, a forest ranger who fled his family’s Mob past, and Adriane, an attorney being pressured to work for the Mafia, read through the diary old hatreds and new alliances rise leaving us to wonder if history will repeat itself.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
“Come sit down,” Tony said as he led her to the couch.
They fell into an embrace, as the rain continued to pound the window.
“I keep thinking a lot about our night in Chicago,” she whispered, breaking the silence.
She looked up to see a grin spreading across his face while he played with her hands. “Yes, that night was very special to me, Eve."
“Yes, it was to me, too.  We never really talked about it. Tony, why were you gone when I woke up?”  They looked at each other with longing in their eyes.
“What would have happened if we had spent the whole weekend together? Going to the wedding together; me meeting your son. Only to have you leave me to fly back home?”
“But you called a month later, telling me that you were coming out."
“Eve, my intent was to fly to Las Vegas just to see you.  Then I found out that Sadie was pregnant, that lead to a bad miscarriage and that's why I backed out.  When I finally got out here you were with Gus.”
"I was really looking forward to seeing you, Tony, when you called to tell me that you..."
"I'm here now, Eve, that's what really matters," he whispered lovingly. She felt the sexual tension building up between them as he ran his hand down her cheek.
"It’s funny how you end up meeting someone, never knowing that someone will be an important part of your life.”
BLURB:
Rob Matheson's a fighter. Flattening enemies with his fists or with his legendary practical jokes, he's a tough enemy, and a troublesome friend. But Rob doesn't know how much longer he can keep up the act. As his buddies get married one by one, he's left with his lonely life - and the sinking feeling he lost more than his dreams when he traded them for a thick skin. Now Rob's father has issued a challenge - he'll give 200 acres of prime Montana ranchland to the first of his four sons to wed. No conditions, no meddling. Could this be a chance to become the man he really wants to be?
Morgan Tate's worked for years to climb the ladder to a top job at Cassidy Wineries, but Duncan Cassidy, the boss' son, always stands in her way. Now he's issued an ultimatum; marry him or he'll make sure she never works in the wine industry again. Morgan wants marriage - and a family - but not with Duncan. A certain cowboy in Chance Creek, Montana, has stolen her heart.
When Rob offers Morgan a proposition - marry him and split the land - they both find themselves with an ethical dilemma. They don't know each other well enough to wed, but they can't lie about their intentions before God and man, either.
Now they've got sixty days to fall in love, and a passel of family and friends determined to keep them apart. The victims of Rob's previous jokes are lining up to get their revenge, and Morgan's half-sister, Claire, is stirring up their mother's past.
Will it take the biggest practical joke of all to convince the world - and themselves - that they're truly meant to be man and wife?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

“It isn't a joke,” he said softly. “I want a chance to change. To be the man I know I can be. I wish I could say that I love you, that I want to spend every waking moment of my life with you, and ask you to marry me for real. I think I will be able to say that to you someday soon. I think…really soon.” He swallowed hard at the very thought. “But we've known each other for so short a time, I can't say it yet. I'm sorry.” He got to his knees again, ready to stand up and head right back out the door. He never should have said anything to Morgan. Now he'd probably blown his chance with the only woman he thought he could fall in love with someday.

“I understand,” Morgan said calmly, freezing him in place. “I appreciate how honest you've been. Sit down again for a minute. Can I tell you what I want?”

He sat down, wrapped his arms around his knees and waited, his heart pounding at what she might say. This was by far the strangest conversation he'd ever had. The most liberating, too. “Definitely.”

“I want three things and I'll do just about anything to get them.” She looked him straight in the eye, though he had a feeling it was hard for her to do so. “First, I want a winery—which means I need a vineyard.” She held up one finger. “Second, I have some money saved up, but even if I had some land, I'd still need about twenty-thousand dollars more to buy rootstock and get it started.” Another finger. “And third…”

“Third…?” Rob held his breath.

“I want a baby.”

Heat blossomed inside him the moment his brain processed the concept of making a baby with Morgan. Images of her in his bed, writhing beneath him, gazing at him as he joined with her, clouded his head until he couldn't think straight. Morgan wasn't saying no to his proposal. In fact, maybe she was saying… “A baby with me?”

Tara Buck has always been the good sister, level-headed by comparison to Scarlett, her flaky, impulsive twin. But when Tara learns her fiancé has been cheating on her with one of his school students, the orderly world she’s created for herself suddenly feels as if it’s falling apart. For years she chose the safe option, but from now on she’s going to live a little, stretch her wings…be a little daring. And if that means acting on the long-suppressed feelings she’s always had for Reid Dalton, then so be it!

Reid has wanted Tara from the moment he met her, but she’s always been out of bounds. Not only is she his patrol partner at the Bozeman PD, she’s also engaged. But then her relationship blows up, and Reid finds himself battling his own instinct to stake his claim with the finest, hottest woman he’s ever known.
Even if anything did happen between them, it would only ever be temporary - Reid’s a born wanderer, while Tara’s roots run deep in Marietta. So even if things are good between them, it seems their romance is destined to be short and sweet...

Tara’s twin sister, Scarlett, also has a Spring Brides story: look out for Second Chance Bride by Trish Morey. Details from montanabornbooks.com

************************************
Now enjoy an excerpt:

She pulled away, instinctively licking her lips to soothe them. Reid’s gaze followed the movement, and she was close enough to see his pupils dilate and his nostrils flare.

She went very still. And then she did something she’d been wanting to do for a very long time: she leaned close and kissed him, properly this time.

His mouth was warm, and she could taste the sweetness of the lemon meringue pie he’d had for dessert. She waited for him to respond, to do something, but he seemed to be waiting for something else. Something more.

Feeling bolder than bold, she ran her tongue along the closed seam of his lips, asking for entry. There was the smallest of pauses, then some of the tension went out of him as he opened to her, his tongue stroking hers, his mouth starting to move at last. His hands found her waist, his fingers gripping her warmly as his kiss became more demanding, more urgent.

Unwell by Marie Chow ~ Write Now Literary Virtual Book Tours ~ Interview

Unwell
by Marie Chow

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Interview:
Crystal: Today as part of this Write Now Literary Virtual Book Tours I have the opportunity to ask Marie Chow a few questions. Welcome Marie, I'm very happy to have you here today. Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?
Marie: I’m a former teacher and engineer who’s not-so-secretly in love with Tom Middleston. Though I wonder how disturbing it is that I’m only attracted to him when he’s playing Loki, who peddles in chaos and insanity?
I’m also a former movie projectionist and Alzheimer’s researcher. I’ve interviewed with the CIA (once to be an analyst and once to be… something else), and I’ve lived everywhere from Omaha and Boston to Taipei.
Crystal: Where did you come up with the idea for Unwell?
Marie: There was this conversation I had with my mother, sometime during my second trimester. As the months had passed, I’d noticed that being pregnant had become a larger and larger part of my identity. Strangers would come up and start conversations, offering advice. I had this moment of panic, that I confided to my mom: I wasn’t sure I was ready to be a mother…
I think such worries are common, pervasive, really. But my mother was, at the time, very distracted, and all she really said was: It’s too late for that.
Now, we’ve had many conversations since, and she’s given me far more helpful advice, but that idea that it was “too late” to back out of parenthood really resonated for me. I started to think about what-if-it-wasn’t? Could I imagine a mother abandoning her child? Not because she was forced to, or because she was abused, etc, but just… could I imagine a mother who would willingly abandon her family because she just didn’t feel capable of being a mother? Or of living what was, otherwise, a good life?
Crystal: What are you currently working on?
Marie: A book that’s set half in Shanghai (in the 1930s) and half in Temple City (present day). I’ve got a pretty firm grip on the main male protagonist… but I haven’t quite decided what role any of the females might play…
Crystal: Do you have any special routine that you follow when you are writing?
Marie: I like to listen to just one song… on loop. Headphones have become very important for my husband’s sanity.
Crystal: Did you have to do a lot of research this book or any other?
Marie: The newest book I’m writing has a lot more research involved since part of it is set in the 1930s. I’m afraid that for my debut, I relied on places I spent summers in and/or locations I was at least somehow personally familiar with.
Crystal: Who are some of your favorite authors that you like to read?
Marie: Margaret Atwood. Richard Russo. Donald Hall. Oh, and now that I have two toddlers, Dr. Seuss.
Crystal: Is there a genre you haven't written that you would like to try?
Marie: I’ve currently been writing a lot of children’s books as it’s something that helps me keep my sanity (my son’s always readily distracted by a new rhyming book, which saves me from having to repeat The Lorax for the gazillionth time). I’ve had a science fiction novel that’s been bouncing around my head for years now… then again, this one marinated for three years before I finally wrote it… so who knows if it’ll ever get written!
Crystal: Do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?
Marie: This is a scene, about 60% into the novel, when our main protagonist meets her boyfriend’s second (honorary) mother. Neither of the “mothers” approve of their relationship, but I’ve always enjoyed this first introduction to Barbara.
Barbara Prachter, on the other hand, invited me over to her Beacon Hill brownstone, had food delivered from the best restaurants for us to enjoy, and was both forthright and consistent about her underlying concern.
We sat in her formal living room, with a variety of food spread out before us, and she spoke as though we had asked her a question. Really, it didn’t matter what we said, she assumed we’d be seeking her approval. It was my first time meeting her, and there was almost no lead-in before she said, looking at me as if the relationship was my responsibility, my decision, “There’s nothing wrong with dating, of course. I’ve dated. I was even married once, to a putz.”
She was an almost aggressively skinny woman, and though you could see the faint outline of breasts under her button-up shirts, that seemed to be the only place fat of any sort resided on her body (in my wilder moments I anthropomorphized the lipids in her body and said to them: I understand, you’ve had to retreat, her breasts are your last stand). Her hair was streaked liberally with gray by the time I met her, and kept quite short (not what my mother would call lesbian short, but rather, barely-past-her-ears, almost long enough to be considered a feminine haircut). Her clothes, though expensive, reflected her general apathy about the concept of attire in general: she wore cashmere sweaters when the weather demanded it, navy or tan slacks, paired with a colorful variety of button-up shirts all in the same style. When I saw her in the summer, it’d be in more or less the same outfit, sans the cashmere. It was almost as though she had decided: yes, this outfit will do, please give it to me in every color combination possible, so that I never again have to waste precious time actually thinking about clothing (thinking about it now, it would make complete sense to me if this is exactly what had happened).
Also, she had picked up smoking by then, which I always thought was an odd choice, given her understanding of human anatomy and physiology. She waved the cigarette around while she perched on the edge of an elegant, probably vaguely Victorian-era chair, a stack of papers needing grading on the coffee table to her right, another stack of submitted papers awaiting her editorial comments on the Oriental rug to her left.
“Putz, putz, putz,” she muttered, as though we were still talking, even though she’d looked down and away by then, leaving me with clenched hands, wondering how to respond.
Ash landed on her students' papers, and she swished it away, smudging it. Ash landed on her peers’ papers, and she glanced at it, unperturbed.
She sucked down another mouthful and let the smoke out one side before continuing, pointing the cigarette and two fingers in my general direction. She looked me in the eyes and pronounced judgment in a way that I’d eventually become used to, a style that was uniquely hers: part compliment, while also simultaneously, judgmental, managing, and insulting. “At least you’re not a putz. That much I can tell.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
About The Book

She's married to a wonderful man, pregnant with a healthy child, and knows there's so much she should be thankful for, and yet--
She's not ready for motherhood.
She's not ready to be a wife.
She's not ready for the realities that have trapped her.
To pass the time, fill the void, and in hopes that someone may eventually understand, she begins a letter to her unborn daughter. In it she tells, unflinchingly, her life story that bring her to this moment. She explains what she hasn't told anyone else: not only who she is, but who she isn't.

Scarlett Buck has always been flaky in comparison to her sensible twin sister Tara, so nobody is really surprised when Scarlett spends all her money on a one way ticket to Australia to be with the man she’s met on the Net. But she hasn’t reckoned on the guy already being married, or her mom getting sick, and now she needs money for a flight home to Marietta, MT—quick. Signing on with Bella's Belles in Kalgoorlie isn't be the proudest moment in her life but it will get her home fast. After all, it's just sex.

Or is it?

Mitch Bannister's ex is about to marry his best friend, and he could really do with a cold beer and a hot woman. But the cowgirl he takes a shine to at Bella's is surprisingly skittish, and in the end he leaves without hooking up.

Later, when Mitch spies the cowgirl in the local pub begging for a job, he shrinks into the shadows--he's not looking for complications, and something tells him that Scarlett Buck is a whole handful of them. But soon it's clear she's not just trouble, she's in trouble, and like it or not, he's not about to turn his back on this stray from the States. Especially if she can do him a favor in return. After all, it's just a helping hand.

Or is it?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now enjoy an excerpt:
They had Chinese food in a restaurant nearby, honey shrimp—except they were called prawns here—and crispy duck with fried rice washed down with an almost local Margaret River white wine. The food was small-town Chinese restaurant good, and Mitch talked about his fly-in fly-out job at the mines, about the fourteen day shifts filled with twelve hour work days and big meals in the mess and maybe a swim before bed and then getting up the next day to do it all over again. Scarlett listened and crunched shrimp tails between her teeth and sucked honey off her fingers and thought that maybe it wasn’t such a crazy idea that she’d come to Australia after all, or she would never have known about any of this kind of lifestyle.
Or more importantly, that otherwise she would never have met Mitch. Maybe she should send Travis a thank-you postcard from Broome? She was halfway tempted.
And Mitch watched a woman who could follow his every word and ask questions while eating with gusto and relish and who wasn’t afraid to get her fingers dirty in the process. And he liked it. A lot.
When she licked her fingers clean, he wished she’d offered them to him first.
And then he smacked his lustful thoughts down hard. He was trying to help her out. Offer her a solution to her problems, so that whatever was bothering her would disappear.
At least, that had been his intention.
Now that she was coming with him to Broome he wasn’t so sure of his motives. She was fun. A breath of fresh air into his highly regulated existence. A temporary cowgirl for a short-term problem.
And while sex wasn’t part of their deal, that didn’t mean he wouldn’t welcome it if it happened. He wasn’t looking for commitment but where was the risk? She was going home in a few days. And they were going to be sharing a villa after all. Sure, it was a big villa. Loads of space for two.
Loads and loads of space.
And one really big bed.
Molly Harper
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Interview:

Crystal: Today as part of this Goddess Fish Promotions Virtual Book Tour I have the opportunity to ask Emelle Gamble a few questions. Welcome Emelle, I'm so happy to have you here today. Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?

Emelle: Clever question, Crystal. What do authors first want to share? Their book titles. And its not just to sell copies (HA!, although that is surely a piece of it), it is to introduce ourselves by way of our characters.

So let me say as the author of MOLLY HARPER and DUETS, the prequel novella introducing Molly Harper three years before the novel opens, I am not a young, stunning, Oscar winning movie star, who just found out I’m being left by my cheating husband. Neither am I in love with my best friend or worried I’m pregnant. That’s Molly.

But we do share the ‘family secret’ thing. The ‘knowing more about secrets than you let on’ thing. And the ‘adoption no one talks about’ thing. And we’re both from California. And I once wanted to be an actress. But I was in LA, and frankly, every other person you meet in LA wants to be an actor.

Crystal: How do you celebrate the release of a new book?

Emelle: You know that feeling you once had on Christmas Eve, when you were so excited you couldn’t sleep, and your imagination made everything possible? Well, I get that feeling the day the book comes out, which is the real celebration. But I also generally share a good bottle of wine and get treated like a Princess by my hubby, Phil-the-fist, and we generally go out to dinner. And I buy myself a special ‘just for me’ present. For Molly it was a new purse. It’s all fun.

Crystal: What is your favorite snack to munch on while you write?

Emelle: Salty, sweet, all bad for you. Goldfish, M&Ms. Sigh. I wish I was a carrots and humus girl, but that ain’t Emelle.

Crystal: Where did you come up with the idea for Molly Harper?

Emelle: See # 1 above. HA! Plus I just thought it would be really cool to look at a famous person’s life from the inside, not the outside, and try to give readers a sense of how it must feel to be under a press microscope all the time, even when you’re suffering and going through tough emotional times. And it felt just like I imagined. Molly turned out to be a person just like everyone is a person; richer, prettier, fortunate to be a success in a very, very tough business, but mostly a complicated woman who makes good decisions and bad and gets through it all with the love of her family and friends. A person just like you or me, if we’re lucky.

Crystal: What are you working on now?

Emelle: I’m working on a couple of things. The next book I release is tentatively called KISS ME TWICE and is a college reunion story, but really more about memory and love. It’s at the ‘I am the book and I am kicking your butt’ stage I always go through with my work. But I’ll wrestle it down soon. As usual, I feel I know the characters very well, just need to smooth out the plot into something coherent. Soon.

Crystal: Do you have a favorite scene from Molly Harper you would like to share with us?

Emelle: Sure. One of my favorites is when Molly goes to see her newly revealed half-brother, Harry, who is one of my reader’s favorites in MOLLY HARPER.

“Molly tuned back to Harry, who was telling a story about the first time Jackson took him to a company function. She began to relax. Harry was very different from Jason, much more open and emotional, but she felt a stirring of the same type of connection she shared with her brother.
A bond of support, or approval, or something she wasn’t sure how to categorize, familiarity, maybe, began to grow between them. She liked Harry Sullivan. She usually warmed to people slowly, but Harry had a way about him she’d taken to immediately.
During dinner they talked about movie people she knew and stage actors he worked with. Harry told her he was very impressed when he read she’d been dating Hugh Grant, and disappointed when she told him there was no truth to the story.
He didn’t mention Anne Sullivan, and she didn’t either.
After a crème brulee dessert Harry cooked to perfection, they settled on the sofa with coffee. “So, are you going to let me do your makeup now?”
“Sure.” She put her mug on the table. “Shall we do it right here?”
“Oh no. Jackson will kill us if he comes home and finds blush smudges on the rug. That’s happened before. Katie Holmes was here a couple of years ago when she had a play on Broadway and dropped a whole damn pot of rose ole right there.” Harry pointed. “She has the most incredible skin, by the way.”
Molly put her hand on her cheek. “I had trouble with my skin when I was a teenager. I’ve had lots of dermabrasion therapy, but I still have scarring.”
“Me, too!” Harry made a face. “Mom had a lot of problems with acne when she was a teenager. One of the first to use antibiotics to try and control it. So it’s in our genes I guess.”
They looked at one another for a moment.
“Do you think we look alike, Harry? Other than the fact our eyes are the exact same color, which I’m noticing now for the first time. Duh?”
He grinned. “Yes. Our eyes are also the same shape, and our lips are similar. I noticed all this the first time I met you, but didn’t think anything of it, except ‘lucky me’.” Harry stared at her hands. “You have Anne’s hands. They’re beautiful.”
“How is she? She handling all this okay?”
“She doesn’t mention you. Don’t take that the wrong way,” he said quickly, touching Molly’s knee. “I mean, she told me about you coming to see her after your mom died. She also said you didn’t think there was any point to trying to have a relationship.”
Molly swallowed. She had too much wine and was feeling raw suddenly. “I did say that.”
“I’m not trying to convince you of anything here, but she’s a wonderful person. Very caring. She had a horrible childhood herself, but she did really well with my brother and me.”
“Good. I’m happy for you.”
“Does that make you angry?” Harry put his hands on his face and sighed. “God. Am I saying everything wrong? Do you hate her because she gave you up for adoption?”
“No. I don’t hate her. And I agree with you that she’s very caring. I saw that when she was with my mom. It’s just, hard. Hard not to feel rejection on a really basic level, you know?”
Harry nodded. “I can try and imagine, but probably no one would know how that feels unless they went through it. I bet it was surreal the first time you sat across from her and realized she gave birth to you.”

Thanks for hosting me, Crystal. I’m a big fan of your blog. And let me ask your readers, do you like reading about characters who are movie stars?

BLURB:

Movie star Molly Harper has it all, beauty, success in her field, and a loving family and marriage to actor Ben Delmonico. Norma Wintz, Molly’s mother, has it all, a lovely life style and two children who adore her, and a respite from the battle against cancer she’s been fighting. Anne Sullivan, at age fifty, is optimistic that her move to sunny Santa Barbara, California, will allow her to be closer to her youngest son and his family, and help her start her life anew after the death of her beloved husband.

But all three of these women, despite their considerable blessings, are plunged into turmoil when the most intimate of secrets that ties their lives together is revealed. At this same time, Molly Harper is confronted with the news that her marriage to actor Ben Delmonico is over. As she navigates this heartbreak and tries to keep the personal details of the drama off the front pages of the newspapers, Molly must also find a way to once and forever negotiate a way forward with her ex- lover and best friend, the volatile and compelling Cruz Morales.

How each of these characters handles the resulting upheaval in their own life, and in their relationships with one another, forms the compelling story of family, secrets and trust in the romantic women’s fiction novel, Molly Harper.

EXCERPT:

When the doorbell rang, Cruz Morales froze. Carefully he set his beer down and glanced out the kitchen window.

He didn’t like what he saw.

He walked to the front entrance of Norma’s house, leaving the pan of chicken and tarragon burbling on a low burner. The soft sounds of Santana playing on the stereo in Molly’s room floated toward him on the evening breeze.

Cruz opened the front door to two uniformed Santa Barbara policeman.

“Officers.” Cruz wiped his hands on the dishtowel he’d stuck in the waistband of his jeans.

The policemen’s faces changed from officious to wary at being confronted by a six-foot-three Hispanic male with a ponytail, tattoos and two gold rings hanging from his right ear.

His bulging biceps beneath the soft old t-shirt didn’t help their comfort level.

Cruz put his hands on his hips and waited. He knew he looked threatening, ugly even, with the scars and disfigurement to the left side of his face.

But he didn’t mind how he looked. Ugly scared people, and kept them away.

Even police.

“Can I help you?” He reminded himself not to move quickly. He’d ended up spread-eagled on the ground more than once in his life for spooking a rookie gringo.

“Is this the Wintz home?” The older of the two men spoke, his right hand on his nightstick.

“Yes. It is.” Cruz offered nothing more. He learned over the years that the best way to protect Molly’s privacy was not to give out gratuitous information.

The cop cleared his throat. “May I ask your name?”

“Cruz Morales.”

“And you are…?”

“I’m a friend of the family.”

“Is that your vehicle out there?” The younger police waved toward the truck in the driveway.

Cruz nodded.

The police looked at each other. “We’ve been trying to contact Miss Molly Harper by phone, but she didn’t answer her cell,” the first cop said. “Is she here?”

“What’s the problem?” Cruz asked.

“I’m afraid I need to save my information for Miss Harper.”

“Cruz, who is it? Is it Mr. Garcia?” Molly hollered from her bedroom.

“Come in.” Cruz stepped back. He turned and called out, “Molly, there are two policemen here who want to see you. Get dressed and come out here.”

The young cop smirked as he walked by Cruz. He had red hair and freckles, and his shirt was about an inch too big around his skinny neck.

Cruz lifted his chin. It was obvious the rookie knew who Molly was, and was busy imagining her getting dressed.

“Take a seat in the library.” Cruz pointed. “It’s right through the archway there.”

The older man, who wore a name-tag reading ‘Sgt Purcell’ nodded. “Okay. Thanks, Mr. Cruz. Please bring Miss Harper to us, whenever she’s ready.”

Cruz watched them walk across the foyer, their black boots squeaking on the tile.

He didn’t mind that the cop got his name wrong. It was typical arrogance. But Cruz began to feel dread build inside. It always happened when he wasn’t sure what would happen next.

He opened the front door and checked the driveway and yard. There was nothing outside that indicated any of the media assholes were sniffing around yet. His truck was blocked in by the patrol car, but no other vehicles were in sight.

Molly hurried down the hallway. “What’s wrong? Why are the police here? Did Mother call?”

Her face was shiny and red from crying. She looked like she was seventeen, he thought. The age she was when he first fell in love with her. He didn’t remember a lot of things from his past, but he always remembered that.

Cruz closed the door. “No one called the house. But the police said they tried your cell.” He took her left arm gently. “Let’s go see what they want.”

“God, do you think something’s happened to Mother?” Her eyes were wide with panic.

“Don’t borrow trouble. They didn’t say that.”

She didn’t move for a moment, and then she put her arm around his back and leaned against him.

Molly was trembling. Cruz knew there was no way to protect her from whatever was coming. But at least he was here.

Because she called me.

Because she needs help.

She needs me.

Everything in his life had changed over the last three years. Everything except that. Cruz squeezed Molly closer and guided her into the library.

“This is Molly Harper,” Cruz announced. “What’s going on?”
