#GiveAway #Interview - A love that Disturbs by Medeia Sharif

A love that Disturbs
by Medeia Sharif

Interview:

Crystal: I have the pleasure of hosting Medeia Sharif today. Welcome Medeia! Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?

Medeia: This is my 8th novel and my first LGBT one.

Crystal: Do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?

Medeia: It’s not excerpt ready, but it’s Maysa and Haydee’s first date. They were sweet and hesitant.

Crystal: Where did you come up with the idea for your current release?

Medeia: I read a news article about a grisly incident between a group of friends, which inspired me to write Maysa, and in passing I met a girl who inspired me to write Haydee.

Crystal: What are you currently working on?

Medeia: I have three middle grade and one young adult manuscript all in different phases of revisions and edits.

Crystal: Do you have any special routine that you follow when you are writing?

Medeia: I mainly write during weekends. I cram in a lot of writing at that time. Also, I always outline before I draft.

Crystal:  Did you have to do a lot of research for this book or any other? If so do you have a fascinating fact that you have learned you would like to share with us?

Medeia: Since this is contemporary and takes place in the city I live in, I didn’t have to do research in those aspects, but I had to do a lot of research for the ending. I can’t reveal what kind of research or that would spoil it for readers. I also read a lot about pimps, since Haydee has one.

Crystal: Who are some of your favorite authors that you like to read?

Medeia: Some of my favorites are Laurie Halse Anderson, Ellen Hopkins, and Ruta Sepetys.

Crystal: Is there any genre you haven't written that you would like to try?

Medeia: I’ve written sci-fi short stories (unpublished) and I’d like to tackle a sci-fi idea for a novel I’d like to write.

Maysa Mazari is alarmed by her mother’s talk about arranged marriage. As a hijab-wearing Pakistani-American,
she wants to find love on her own. Her judgmental Muslim clique has protected her from racist taunts, although the leader is turning on her as Maysa strays from the group because of her attraction to Haydee.

Haydee Gomez is a former gang member and juvenile detention student. Now living with a clean-cut aunt, she wants to turn her life around, even though one person will
never let her forget her roots—Rafe, her abusive pimp. Haydee attempts to pull away from a life of prostitution when she develops feelings for Maysa, although Rafe isn’t willing to give her up too easily.

Finding themselves in danger from Maysa’s friends and Haydee’s pimp, it’s apparent their love disturbs everyone around them as they fight to stay together.

EXCERPT:

At least Rafe wouldn’t bother her for a few hours. He knew it was her first day in a new school.
Haydee blew her nose, wiped her eyes, and left the bathroom. She walked into
first period English and handed the teacher the pass. Students stared. A few
had tattoos peeking from the edges of sleeves and shorts, but nothing like what
she had. She felt like The Tattooed Woman and avoided staring back at them. She
wasn’t in alternative school anymore, where most students had a nasty attitude
about anything related to academics. The students in front of her had their
books open and had been reading and writing before she walked in. They weren’t
looking to fight her and she wasn’t going to fight them.

“Let me write your name down,” the teacher said. “I’ll make a folder for your work. How do you say your name? Heidi?”

“No, it’s Hay-dee,” she corrected Ms. Tookes. “Haydee Gomez.”

Ms. Tookes wrote her

name on a notepad and nodded toward an empty desk, so Haydee sat down in a seat
in the back with a textbook. The assignment was on the board, but Haydee had
trouble seeing. She had lost or broken so many of her eyeglasses in the past
that she stopped wearing them. She was slightly nearsighted and lived with her
blurry vision just fine. Tomorrow she’d come to class on time and get a seat in
the front.

She continued to

receive some stares, but then students went back to work.

Feeling like she was on

display, Haydee twirled the drawstrings of her hoodie, chewed the inside of her
mouth, and smoothed down the baby hairs on her forehead. The door opened and
she was grateful for another distraction. It was Maysa, her pink-and-green silk
scarf glistening under the fluorescent lights. Haydee’s vision sharpened, as if
she could see Maysa clearly, while everything around her was fuzzy. Maysa
caught Haydee’s gaze and smiled before turning to Ms. Tookes. “May I take a few
pictures of the students working?”

The teacher smiled

back. “Take all the pictures you want.”

Maysa had a sunny,

innocent demeanor. Haydee wondered what it would be like to have her life. She
must have two parents taking care of her. She probably had brothers and sisters
who were as nice as she was. Her parents were strict, if she had to cover her
head like that, but they most likely were loving. Haydee’s curiosity
intensified. She needed to know more about Maysa, who was walking to the back
of the room where she was.

“Can I take a picture

of you reading the textbook?” Maysa asked.

“Sure,” Haydee said.

Anything. She wanted to please this girl. Haydee opened to a random page. It
was a Shakespearean sonnet, which was like another language to her. Haydee
liked to read, but not classic works. She enjoyed romance books and read any
that she could get her hands on. They helped her escape from her own reality by
taking her someplace else for a few hours.

Flashes sparked as

Maysa took a few shots of Haydee. “You’re very photogenic.”

“Really?” Haydee looked

up. “Let me see.”

Maysa neared her and

held the back of the camera to Haydee’s face. Looking at the screen, Haydee saw
she didn’t look too bad. Her bun was messy in a stylish way, and her head was
tilted down to her book. Her cheekbones were sharp, and her right side was on
display—not the left one with the black eye. “It’s a nice shot.”

Maysa smiled, and

Haydee blinked, not knowing what else to say or do. She wanted to keep Maysa
talking so that she wouldn’t leave right away. Because of the picture taking, a
few other students had started talking and sneaked looks at the two of them.
Haydee knew they must seem like an odd pair interacting with each other. Maysa
showed her the next few pictures, at different angles. “I have to go now and
get to the next classroom,” she said.

“Oh, all right.” Her

gaze was riveted to Maysa’s slender form as she walked out the door.

Haydee’s phone vibrated

again. When the teacher wasn’t looking, she slid it out of her pocket.

Got a nice dress for

you tonight

Come to my place later

so you can try it on
Red, your perfect color

And just like that, the

moment was ruined. She shoved her phone back into her pocket. Like she needed
another reminder of everything that was wrong in her life. She gritted her
teeth and made fists, then forced herself to loosen her hands. She didn’t want
to think about Rafe anymore, but how could she not? He was like a virus in her
system and she couldn’t get rid of him. She admitted that he took care of her:
he beat up johns who mistreated her, handed over any money he promised her, and
challenged anyone who bothered her on the rough streets of Miami.

If it hadn’t been for Rafe, she might have been dead at one point, because one of the johns locked her in a bathroom, threatening to kill her later, and he took care of the
situation. There were the existing issues of earning money and a degree of
safety, but surely she could find another line of work. How would she tell Rafe
that she wanted out without having his temper explode? She had seen him cut a
man’s face with a razor. Would he do the same to her?

#Review: Renegade: Asphalt Cowboys by Madison Sevier

Madison Sevier became one of my very favorite must read now authors with my very first taste of her work. That hasn't changed a bit and if anything has became a more urgent need to get my hands on her books right away.

Renegade is one of those books that touched my heart, made me cry, laugh, cling to the edge of my chair in suspense, and fan myself a few times. I loved the characters and the story line. A series about truckers! What more could the girl that was raised in the garage and towing business ask for. Madison has done a fabulous job of capturing the life of a trucker, a trucker's wife, and the workers of a truck stop.

Savannah Somers has been through so much in her life. It hasn't been easy living through the things she has had to endure. Nor has it been easy living life on the run and in fear all the time. Savannah is one of those characters that I bonded with right away. I cheered for her, cried for her, and felt her fear.

Mason Kaine has living a rough life. He's one of those guys that has a tough exterior but also has a heart of gold. Mason is sure not looking for a relationship when he meets beautiful Savannah in a truck stop. However he is unable to walk away when he sees Savannah having a rough time. I loved that this guy did not know anything about this lovely lady but stepped in to help her out. How can you not instantly fall in love with a guy like that.?

Savannah and Mason have an instant attraction that is explosive. I loved watching these two quibble their way though different situations. It was fun watching them get to know each other, push each other's buttons, and offer up sweet gestures to for other that were so heartwarming.

Now let me talk about the suspense and drama. Oh my goodness not only is this one awesome romance story but an dramatic action packed story too. I don't want to tell you too much because I really do want you to enjoy this story as much as I did. I will tell you that I held my breathe through a few scenes and clung to edge of my seat through a few more. I did not want to put this book down.

I can not wait to get my hands on the next book in this series. I know it will be a terrific read.

I was given the opportunity to read this great story so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Renegade.

#Review - Riverbend Road by RaeAnne Thayne

I absolutely adore small town romance series books. RaeAnne Thayne is one of my very favorite authors to get my fix for an awesome small town romance story. This talented lady writes a story that digs right down into my heart every time. I instantly bond with the characters and I'm thrilled to catch up with old friends in town. So needless to say when I hear that RaeAnne Thayne had a new release coming out I could not wait to get my hands on it and dig right into to the story. I received my copy in the mail and less than 5 minutes later I was just going to read the blurb on the back and the first few pages. An hour later I was completely engrossed in Riverbend Road and way more than just a page or two into the story. I honestly could not help myself. This book is so good it was impossible to put down.

Wyn Bailey is a very self sufficient girl that can kick rear end, protect the town of Haven Point while on duty, and knock the socks off a certain chief when she is off duty. This girl has been through so much that my heart just broke for her. Not only did I feel her pain but I admired her strength, courage, and ability to pick up and keep plugging through life. She has no problem kicking a rear end or two when needed but she also has a heart of gold and is willing to help anyone in need, even if she has just met them.

Cade Emmett does a fabulous job of keeping the peace in Haven Point. Cade has had a very interesting life that could have sent him down a path very easily on the other side of the law. How could I not instantly adore this guy and admire him for his heart and responsibility that he takes very seriously. OK I may have wanted to yell at him a time or two that he should go for it and follow his heart.

Wyn and Cade have a deep friendship and have know each other since they were children so their relationship goes way back. The problem is that Cade has an incredible attraction to Wyn and Wyn has loved Cade since she was a teen. This wouldn't be such a huge problem is Cade was not her boss. There seems to be just way too many obstacles in their way for them to have a happily ever after.

I'm not going to spoil the story for you. I want you to grab a copy and enjoy this book just as much as I did.  There is a huge dramatic situation that kind of puts every and anything into prospective for everyone involved. I have to say I think I may have held my breath for a few pages while reading this part of the book. Ms. Thayne sure does know how to add in a nice amount of suspense that kept me turning pages with a tear in my eye.

Over all this is one really awesome small town romance story. I loved catching up with all my old friends from Haven Point. Wyn and Cade's story is emotional, full of heart and soul, with a few encumbrances from their past that they will need to work through in order to make it to that happily ever after.

If you are already a huge RaeAnne Thayne fan like me, then HURRY grab this story because you are going to love it just as much as I did. If you have not had a chance to read Ms. Thayne's work yet but love small town romance series then grab this one. I think you will enjoy the characters and quickly fall in love with with RaeAnne Thayne's talent and writing style. Riverbend Road is part of the Haven Point series but never fear, it will stand alone just fine. However if you haven't read the previous books in the series may I suggest grabbing them now too. They are just as wonderful.

I was given the opportunity to read this great story so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my grand pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Riverbend Road.

#Review Deep Dark by Laura Griffin

Laura Griffin has written yet another Tracers book that captivated my attention from the first page to the last. This is one of those books that I picked up and did not want to put down until I figured out just who was so evil to commit the horrific crimes.

When a friend  is killed Laney Knox feels a little to close to crime. Things are looking a lot like what happened to her in the past and she is determined to help find the killer before he hurts anyone else or maybe comes back to finish what he started with Laney in the past. Reed Novak is investigating the case and Laney finds a few unique ways of getting clues to him.

Reed really isn't all the keen on Laney's help on the case. He doesn't want her in danger and tries really hard to talk her into stepping back and staying safe.

The tension between Laney and Reed has a lot to do with the mutual attraction they both feel for each other. Reed wants to protect Laney and Laney wants to protect the next victim before the killer strikes again.

Reed and Laney make a really good team together and find that maybe working together just may be the way to go. I admired Laney's ability with a computer. I think this lady would find a way to get any info she needed to help put the bad guys away.

One of the things I really enjoy about Laura Griffin's Tracers' books is the in depth details on how they find the clues and how they find their answers from the clues. It's fun to see what little thing they can take and turn it into a possible lead to the UNSUB.

Ms. Griffin had me guessing who done it all the way to the end. I was so surprised. The mystery kept me captivated with just enough details to keep me wondering. The romance between Laney and Reed is combustible and ready to ignite at a moments notice.

This is part of the Tracers series but if you haven't had a chance to read the previous nine books in the series never fear Deep Dark will stand on it's own just fine.

I was given the opportunity the read and review this thrilling book so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Deep Dark.

#GiveAway #Interview - OF BLOOD & Snow by Danielle Belwater

OF BLOOD & Snow

Erlanis Chronicles, 2
by Danielle Belwater

Blood is thicker than water, or so the story goes…

As fast as Cora can run, there is no escaping the blood that ties her to an ancient, evil past.

Amongst the bitter cold and driving snow, Nate must find a way to protect the love of his life, before the darkness falls and Cora is lost to him forever.

Interview:

Crystal: Today I have the pleasure of hosting Danielle Belwater. Welcome Danielle! I'm so excited to have you here with us today. 1. Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?

Danielle: I always find this one of the most difficult questions of all. Who am I? Like a lot of people I struggle talking about myself. When I’m not writing, I’m spending time with my family or decorating cakes. I love being creative in a totally different media.

Crystal: Do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?

Danielle: One of my favourite scenes is where Cora is discovering her power and experimenting late one night when Nate discovers her. It shows not only Cora’s vulnerability but Nate’s unwavering faith in her no matter the situation.

“Shh.” Cora opened her eyes and squinted, focusing all her attention on the air above her hands. The shimmering glow had returned. Her veins darkened, resembling roads on a map. A wisp of silver smoke curled upward, forming a small cloud, swirling an inch above the cup. Tiny crystals had formed at the base of the mug and blossomed over the entire cup leaving it coated in a thin icy white film. I shook my head and blinked. Cora took her fingers away from the cup and shoved her hands back into the relative safety of her lap.
Cora nodded toward the object on the table, giving me the okay. I reached out and touched it. It clinked and steam no longer rose from its contents. I wrapped my fingers around the outside and picked it up. The freezing cold shocked me and the mug fell from my hands and onto the table with a loud clunk. The coffee had frozen into a solid block. I tapped the surface. Yep, coffee popsicle.
“How did you do that?” I picked it up again and looked at it from every angle. Cora put her hands on the table and shrugged.
“I’ve no idea.”
“Does this have anything to do with the dreams you’ve been having?” The memory of Cora sitting on the floor, clutching her arm came back to me. She claimed it had been a dream. I wasn’t convinced.
“I don’t know.” Cora looked away but I didn’t miss the pink flush rise in her cheeks.
I leaned toward her, picking up her hands between my own and breathed warm air into them. They were frozen.
“What’s going on, Cora? Talk to me.” I pleaded. She lifted her head but didn’t speak. “Cora, this is me. Do you seriously think that little of me? That I would judge you?”
The muscles in her jaw tightened and she flinched. “No, that’s not… No. Ugh.” She diverted her gaze to a drop of spilled coffee on the table. I cupped her chin in my hand and turned her face toward mine, making sure she couldn’t look away.
“Cora. I’ve just watched you take iced coffee to a whole new level, and while the notion of instant iced beverages excites me I think there is perhaps something a little bit deeper going on.”
The tightness in Cora’s face eased and she released her bottom lip from between her teeth and it went from white to a kissable rose pink. I couldn’t resist and brought my lips to hers but got a mouthful of hair instead.
“Don’t.” I turned her head back to face me. This time when I kissed her, she didn’t pull away. “Tell me.”
“I don’t know where to start.”
“Try the beginning.” I squeezed her hand.
After a minute of silence she finally spoke. “At first, I couldn’t control it. Stuff would just, you know, happen. If I was upset or angry. Now I can make things change on purpose.” She blew out the breath she had been holding as if she’d just confessed to grand theft auto.
“See, that wasn’t so hard, was it?” I couldn’t let her see my amazement at what she’d done. She was clearly having a hard enough time dealing with this as it was.
“I just don’t understand why you didn’t think you could talk to me about it.” Cora avoided making eye contact with me, instead, scratching at her cuticles.
“Is there something wrong with me?”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“There is absolutely, positively nothing wrong with you.” She could grow another head and I’d still think she was the most beautiful person I’d ever seen. “Granted, some answers would be nice, but I have no doubt that you are now, and will always be, perfect.”

Crystal: Where did you come up with the idea for your current release?

Danielle: After book 1, Of Fire & Roses was released, it was clear to me that Nate and Cora still had a long way to go.
While writing Of Blood & Snow, I think I must have watched the first four seasons of The Walking Dead maybe five or six times, at least!  The characters are intriguing and I found myself doing a lot of philosophizing about not necessarily a Zombie Apocalypse but what people do in times of seemingly endless crisis. Would you be a survivor? Or would the situation prove your downfall? I have tried to adapt some of these concepts and put my characters in similar situations to see how they would react. Not to mention stick in a bunch of hidden Walking Dead references!

Crystal: What are you currently working on?

Danielle: Currently, Book 3 (which is yet untitled) is in the works, which will take our intrepid band a long way from home and introduces a new main character who will send them all into a tailspin! I can’t say much more, not because I don’t want to, but because I haven’t written it yet!

Crystal: Do you have any special routine that you follow when you are writing?

Danielle: When you have 2 young kids, 2 jobs, a husband and house that needs a clean from time to time I don’t have the luxury of a routine. Usually, once the kids are in bed, and I have done all the daily grind I try and get at least 1000 words out a day. Not that it happens!

Crystal: Did you have to do a lot of research for this book or any other? If so do you have a fascinating fact that you have learned you would like to share with us?

Danielle: I had to do a fair bit of research on the area, it’s climate, especially in Winter, and make sure that I keep my locations as true to reality as possible. It was important to me to put every day people and places in a totally unreal situation.

Crystal: Who are some of your favorite authors that you like to read?

Danielle: I adore Juliet Marillier. She has been my favourite author since I first picked up Daughter of the Forest 12 years ago. But I love reading books by new and established authors no matter the genre. I’ve been digging Dr Seuss lately.

Crystal: Is there any genre you haven't written that you would like to try?

Danielle: I never thought I’d say it, but I’d like to try something out of the romance genre- gasp! After reading Paula Hawkins – Girl On The Train and Hannah Kent’s – Burial Rites, I’ve got an urge to write something a little darker and perhaps a bit out of my comfort zone.

Excerpt:

14+ due to adult situations

Why? Why did I need to go home? Other than for shelter, no one needed me there. Nate was all I had left. He was my reason for breathing and now the sole reason I got up
every morning. The thought of harm coming to Nate made my heart hammer in my
chest even harder. I jammed my hands deep into my coat pockets and focused on
letting oxygen flow into my lungs.

In a single moment of clarity, I knew. I mean, I knew I loved Nate; that was without
question. But if I didn’t have him in my life, it would be nothing but vacuous space.

I brushed snow off the fallen tree trunk and sat down. My thinking tree. Nate and I came
here often to sit and talk, read, or watch the day simply pass us by. I piled up handful after handful of snow, heaping them on top of each other until a small avalanche rolled off the log and into a heap on the ground.

You are the key.

I leapt off the log landing two feet together, crushing the peak of snow beneath my shoes.

“Who’s there?” I shoved my fists into my hips and squared my shoulders. If there was
someone there, they didn’t know who they were messing with.

The rustling of leaves came from above and a sprinkling of disturbed snow flittered down in
front of my face. The flapping of beating wings and the call of a solitary bird echoed overhead. I caught sight of white feathers tipped with black before they disappeared above the trees and out of sight.

“Is anyone there?” I called out again, but I had a feeling I wouldn’t get a response.
The softness of the voice rolled around my head as I lingered amongst the tall trees on my
way back home.

I am the key. The answer is within my blood. What did that mean?

About the Author:

Danielle Belwater adores the concept of true love and that everyone has their Prince
Charming or Snow White out there somewhere, even if they have to fight demons,
ghosts, and wizards to find it.

Danielle has been having a love affair with words since she was young and in primary
school, writing some rather imaginative tales. This love has followed her into
adulthood.

She lives in rural South Australia with her husband, young daughters and way too many animals to mention. She spends most of her time dreaming up characters,
stories, ghostly tales, and watching Firefly re-runs.  She also cooks the odd meal for her family to avoid them looking like skeletons at official author functions!

Danielle is passionate about reading and her interests include pretty much anything with words from rolling four volume epics to the daily newspaper.
