Ben popped a dumpling into his mouth and chewed and they grinned at each other happily. They managed to make short work of the appetizers and Jill moaned with pleasure as, after removing the empty plates, their server replaced them with huge bowls of pork fried rice, shrimp lo mein and chicken in a garlicky sauce. Their dinner was served family style, and Jill helped herself to large portions of everything. They ate in companionable silence, punctuated by Jill’s moans of delight as she sampled each dish. After she had eaten most of the food she had taken, she drank some water, and then sat back with a satisfied sigh.

“Carly says I could have a food baby and no one would even notice.” God, where had that come from?

“No one, huh?” he said with a smirk. When he saw Jill blush, he sat back and smiled. “I’m dying to know more about you, Jill Griffin.”

Jill shrugged her shoulders. Always shy and intensely private, she had grown increasingly wary over the years and disliked talking about herself. She had been burned a few times by those claiming to be interested in her, when all the while they only wanted to learn something about James, as if she would relay some juicy bit of gossip about him, posthumously or not.

She knew that since Ben was well on his way to the level of celebrity James had enjoyed, it was highly unlikely Ben had any kind of ulterior motive. He was probably sincere in wanting to get better acquainted with her. But even though she felt comfortable with Ben, she was out of practice with any sort of personal narrative.

“Not much to tell. I was married to James and we had Carly and then James died.”

Ben frowned at her and his brown eyes looked sad. “I’m not asking about Jill the wife or Jill the mother.”

“Well, that’s all there is to me, I’m afraid.” Jill laughed nervously.

Ben was shaking his head at her. “I think you’re wrong. I see so much more than that. I see a beautiful woman. A talented woman. A woman I want to get to know much, much better.” Jill put down the cloth napkin she had been folding and unfolding underneath the table. She had regained some of her self-confidence and she watched him closely as she spoke.

“A mature woman. Ben, I’m 42 years old. I have an 18-year old daughter. I don’t know what you want from me. I’m not a ‘Mrs. Robinson’ okay? You’re so…young,” she ended weakly.

But Ben was not to be put off. “I like you Jill. Yeah, I’m a little younger than you, but so what? Just a number, am I right? I want to know what makes you tick. How you come up with all those amazing song lyrics. What you love, what you wish for. And more than anything, I want to know how it will feel to hold you in my arms. What it will be like to kiss those lips. What you taste like…” He stopped as he noticed Jill was staring at him, open-mouthed. He pushed his chair back and slipped over next to her in the banquette.

Jill needed to say something, before she started kissing him like she had been dreaming about all day.

“I just want to keep this private, okay? I haven’t been with anyone since, well, you know. Carly says she’s ready for me to start dating again, but I’m not at all sure I believe her. You and I kind of work together, and I have to keep it professional. And there’s going to be a big tribute concert for James this fall and there will be a ton of press. I can’t have this, whatever it is, taking center stage. So this is just between us, okay?”

Ben was watching her closely and at his nod of agreement, she continued.

"And just for the record,” she whispered, “I imagine I taste like Whoppers and garlic sauce.”

Ben took her in his arms and just before he started kissing her, he assured her, “That’s my favorite.”

EXCERPT:
With gentle fingers, Marcus tilted her chin up and stared into her eyes. “What do you need, Veronica?”
Her chest heaved, but she twisted away from him, paced down the hallway. She leaned against the wall across from the door to her apartment. “My family’s a mess. I’m a mess.”
He stepped toward her, and his toe collided with the leg of a barstool. He stumbled, and the wooden back gouged into his shoulder.
He sucked in a breath but kept moving forward. Veronica needed him. His breath came in gasps, but he stood inches in front of her.
She sighed, closed her eyes, and leaned her head against the wall.
Marcus stepped closer. “What’s really bothering you?”
Her eyes popped open. The intensity in the green-flecked depths sucker-punched him. “I don’t know if I’ll ever be ready.” Her chest shuddered. “To give you want you want.”
“I’ll wait.” He cupped her flushed cheek in his palm. “You’re worth it.”
“Don’t wait.”

The words barely registered because Veronica stepped into him. Every luscious curve pressed along the front of him. He covered her peachy lips with a hungry kiss.
Their mouths opened, tongues serenaded with languished strokes. A moan vibrated from the conjoined chest. His or hers?
His hands slid up and down her back, plunging into the thick curls at the nape of her neck. Pounding in his ears nearly drowned the voice chiding him for wanting to explore her entire backside. Her soft firmness wreaked havoc on his self-control. He wanted her, and parts of his body screamed the fact.
She shifted her hips, and he pressed into her center. Pleasure shuddered through him.
A little gasp from her lips made his heart stall. She leaned away and temperate air from her apartment cooled his passion a fraction.
“Veronica?” He licked his lips at the sight of her just-kissed mouth. His heart sped like a runaway train.
“I thought—” She stepped back until the wall halted her.
A yowl sent Marcus into a defensive stance. Veronica’s cat wove between her shins, glaring at Marcus with wide green eyes.
“Hey buddy.” Marcus’ voice sounded husky to his ears. Usually, he’d squat down and converse with Major, but he was physically hindered. “Don’t be jealous. You’ll get to sleep with her later.”
Heat flushed through his chest and face. Good Lord. Did I just talk about sleeping with her?
He glanced at Veronica. “Not that I’m hinting that I want to sleep with you.” He ran his fingers through his hair, setting the curls free from their mousse chains. “I mean, I want to sleep with you. Obviously.”
Veronica’s slender fingers pressed against his lips, a sort of resolution darkening the amber flecks in her eyes. “I’m not ready. There’s so much going on with my family, and I hate burdening you with it. You deserve…”
Marcus drew back. His body and soul ached for her, but he didn’t want to do anything to make her relive the trauma of her abuse.

Suddenly, in the full moon light that illuminated
the clearing ahead of her as well as day, she saw him. Connor, his golden eyes
catching her in their gaze and drawing her in to him. Afraid of him, but more
afraid of the claws she could now hear scrabbling on the rock strewn path
behind her, she chose the possible safety of his presence and burst into the
clearing herself. Without quite realizing how, she found herself in his arms,
enveloped in his scent, and his coat whipping around her as if to offer her
refuge within its folds. She buried her head in his chest as a child might, to
keep out a nightmare.

Abruptly, a howl sounded from outside the
clearing, answered by another from the opposite side. They were surrounded!

Still hiding her head, Claire felt Connor’s arms
tighten around her and press her closer, and she could feel a rumbling coming
from the man, a sound that grew into a low growl. The sound vibrated inside her
very skin, and, unable to help herself, she melted even more deeply into his
embrace.

Warned away, her pursuers retreated back into the
blackness beyond the clearing, and Connor gently raised Claire’s face to his
own. Almost glowing in the moonlight, his eyes pierced her deeply, and she was
completely unresisting as he lowered his lips to hers, heat pouring from him
into her like a flame as his mouth found hers, opening her and exploring her
with his first kiss. She found herself responding, her hands reaching up to
tangle themselves in his unruly hair, her tongue darting out to taste his,
feeling the sharp points of his teeth.

His hands moved to her waist, his lips to her
neck, to her shoulders, to the tear in her blouse. The sharp sensation as he
found a tender nipple with his fangs caused her to gasp aloud, but she didn’t
resist or push him away. Instead, she pressed herself against him, urging him
on. Then they were falling together, the rich loam of the Irish earth
cushioning them as they tumbled to the ground.

Suddenly, she was the aggressor, rolling on top of
him even as she wondered at her wanton behavior. His hands, helped by hers,
slid along her trembling thighs, up and under her skirt, while their mouths
never lost contact, sharing the same breath and moving as one under the gently
glow of the moon.

She could feel the bulge of his manhood straining
through his clothes, rubbing against her own intimate flesh. His hands had slid
beneath her undergarments and were stroking the sensitive skin there, sending
waves of pleasure that were both fire-hot and chilling at the same time. She
put her hands between them, freeing him, and moving away from his mouth for a
brief moment to look into his moonlit face. Holding his gaze with her own,
wondering if her own eyes held the same hypnotic desire that his did, she made
a final decision. As she drove herself onto him, impaling her flesh on his, she
was doing what she had always wanted, always needed, always been waiting for.

Around them, a chorus of howls accompanied her own
cries. This time she felt the howls were voicing their approval, not hunting
her, and the sound swept around her as her body went rigid in climax, Connor
still hard and deep inside her pulsing flesh. His hands came up to pull off the
tattered remains of her top and expose her breasts to the night, to his grasping
mouth and questing tongue.

As he pulled her down to meet his mouth, the moon
caught the necklace, and a white hot silver light seemed to flash from it. Suddenly,
his body stiffened and he cried out, not in pleasure but in pain, and Claire
felt his body under her begin to change, his hands to grow claws, the teeth at
her bosom narrow into even sharper points, and she, lost in pleasure as she
was, still had the energy to shriek as what had once been Connor now turned
into a thrashing, struggling wolf beneath her.

Her own cries woke her up, to the bright sunlight
of her hotel room and the start of her new day in Dublin.
