The staccato rap of knuckles on wood brought my head up in time to spot Jackson Shaw lean against the doorjamb in my office. A flannel shirt hung from his shoulders in tatters with the sleeves rolled up past his elbows, exposing vivid crimson slashes across his forearms. More gashes bisected his torso, leaving his abs peeking out at me from under his T-shirt. Dried mud caked his boots, and he smelled of...
I coughed into my fist and reached for a bottle of water. “Is that sauerkraut?”
He shrugged while shutting the door then crossed the room and perched on the edge of my desk. “Don’t ask.”
“Fine. I won’t.” I swigged tepid water to wet my parched throat. “What brings you here?”
His gaze jerked from my lips to my eyes. “Mable said you had a proposition for me.”
“Um, no.” Heat blistered my cheeks. “Well, not exactly.”
Fabric tore as he removed his flannel shirt and used it to wipe his face clean. He glanced up and caught me staring. A heartbeat later, the scent of bergamot and patchouli stung my nose, the heady fragrance sinking heavily into my lungs, tingling in my limbs with every inhale until my tender nerves sizzled.
Shaw’s voice dipped into a husky register. “It’s been a long time, Thierry.”
Twelve months. Twelve. Too long. Not nearly long enough.
“Don’t.” My voice sounded as small and pained as a wounded animal. “Just don’t.”
I dug through my satchel for the vial of smelling salts I kept there. I inhaled until my sinuses burned and my eyes watered. Thank God, the pungent scent still cut through his sultry lure. As to why I kept the vial on me, call me sentimental.
His jaw tightened. “The conclave—”
“—had nothing to do with you rolling out of my bed and right into someone else’s.” Bitter laughter stung my throat. “Five someone elses.”
“Give me some credit.” He fisted his ruined shirt in his lap. “I tried.”
“Not hard enough.”
Being faithful to me had almost killed him. Learning he had been unfaithful? Well, that almost killed me.
Shoving from the desk, Shaw began pacing the room. “Did you want something or not?”
I leaned back in my chair. “Mable wants us to work the Morrigan’s poaching case together.”
A moment passed between us then, and I knew he was remembering the first case we had worked as partners. We had gone after poachers then too.
He planted his feet and gave me his full attention. “I’m listening.”
Leaving nothing out, I filled him in on my visit from “Raven”.
“Dealing with a death-touched fae means hazard pay.” He considered me. “If we split the bounty, we’ll both come out with a nice check.”
One niggling doubt kept pecking at my brain. The first rule of investigative work was to rule out the obvious, even if the obvious was impossible. “Mable says Raven can’t physically be here.”
“Black Dog bound him.” He shook his head. “Only he can unbind him.”
That was news to me. Mable was right. Shaw was leaps ahead of me in the research department.
I wondered, “What about a spell?”
Incubus or not, Shaw was the best spellworker the Southwestern Conclave had.
“Not likely.” He scratched his jaw. “Most spells perform a single function. If Raven projected his likeness, he could converse intelligently with you. If he tapped into the invocation circuit the marshals use to summon the Morrigan, he would hear the calls and could send his magic to consume the tithe. The odds of him crafting a spell complex enough to accomplish both tasks are slim.”
I nodded in deference of his expertise. “So poacher it is.”
Fragrant spice burst in the air between us, twining through my senses until my body softened.
“I missed this,” he said. “Us working together.”
I made a noncommittal sound and planted my palms on the desktop.
He seemed to take my grunt as agreement. “I’ll email you what I have so far.”
“I’d appreciate it.” Eager for a breath of fresh air, I rose and crossed the room to open the door. “I’ll send you a copy of the incident report Mable filed on my behalf.”
He boxed me in, the knob cutting into my hip as he stood there, soaking me up like sunshine. A zap of connection jolted a gasp out of me when his fingers slid along my jaw until his palm cupped my cheek.
Thick lashes rimmed his burnished copper eyes, a snare that stole my breath. His sun-kissed skin burned where it touched mine, and I struggled against the urge to lean into that heat, to tuck a mahogany curl behind his ear. The absence of his usual smile left stark white creases in the corners of his eyes and faint bracket lines on either side of his full lips.
Damn him and his stupid lure. Damn me too for being stupid enough to be alone with him.
“We’ll make this work.” His whiskey-rich voice poured warmly through my ears. “Partners?”
I swallowed hard, tasting him on each swallow. “I should— Mai is expecting me.”
His finger traced the line of my jaw, sliding down my throat and across my collarbone until he spread a wide palm over my frenzied heart. Fire lanced from his hand to my soul, searing my chest where we touched. With a blistering sigh, Shaw licked his lips, his voice gone hoarse. “You should go then.”
My head bobbled. “I should.”
But I didn’t.
His head lowered, his lips hovering a breath above mine.
Our almost-kiss was interrupted by a fat pink purse bouncing off the side of his head.
“Boy, you better get back.” Mable cocked her arm. “No feeding on conclave property.”
“Feeding?” I slurred as Mable swam in and out of focus.
“Out.” Mable elbowed Shaw into the hall then hooked an arm around my waist. “Are you all right?”
“Yeah.” I let her guide me back to my chair. “Fine.”
The lure must have hit me harder than I thought.
She cupped my face and tilted my head back. “I never should have let that sweet talker up here.”
My eyes drifted closed. “He’s fine.”
“No.” She shook my shoulders. “He was wounded and hungry, and you were an easy mark.”
That jolted me awake. “What?”
If my coworkers started thinking I was easy pickings, I wouldn’t last the week. If I wanted to keep running with the big dogs, I had to show them my bite was worse than my bark.

 ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Winter was the maw of a ravenous beast who raged against those foolish enough to venture into the frigid northland forests. It gulped them down through thin patches of ice or devoured them with a frostbitten sickness that spread through their limbs, blackening them until the cold sank teeth in their hearts and they expired. The northlands were a harsh, miserable territory I could not wait to escape.
After penning those words, I snapped my journal closed and stuffed it into my saddlebag.
For the first time in months, my heart was light and the city of Erania lay behind me.
“I have another blanket if you require it.”
I reined in my ursus and glanced over my shoulder. “Then what will keep you warm?”
The male who rode straight for me shifted in his saddle to free the thick fur wrapped around his waist. He wore black leather pants, a white silk shirt and a heavy overcoat trimmed in fur. He was as pale as the snow banked around us, and even the thick ridges of scars crisscrossing his face failed to dull his beauty in my eyes. His sow bumped noses with mine when he pulled even with me. Our mounts were twin sisters, both as black as pitch. Both unimpressed to be a part of our frozen caravan bound for the southlands.
He wiggled his eyebrows at me. “The love of a good female?”
I wrinkled my nose. “I do love you, Edan, but I fail to see how that will warm you.”
“I said a female.” He grinned and tossed the fur to me. “Not a spoiled little girl.”
I rolled my eyes. “And who, dear brother—”
He clamped a hand over my mouth. “Hush.”
I startled then gave him a slow nod. He released his grip after a quick glance around us.
We shared dangerous secrets now. Leave it to me to be the one who spilled them.
If we were to play at being husband and wife, I would do well to act my part.
“I’m sorry.” My exhale left a plume of white fog between us. “I forget.”
Edan took my hand and kissed the top of my glove. “You weren’t designed for treachery.”
“And you were?” I regretted the words the instant they left my mouth.
Our former master had trained Edan in the art of duplicity, to be a pawn for his machinations.
That we were no longer slaves did little to alter the parts of our pasts still chained to our hearts.
“We are what we are, Marne.” His smile faltered. “Nothing can change that.”
“What are we then? Slaves to our pasts or masters of our own fates? I no longer know.”
A shrill whistle sounded behind us. I twisted in my saddle to see who had raised the alarm. Asher.
Of all the males who could have volunteered for this detail, why had he lifted his hand?
Asher ran his boar hard. From here I spied the white foam rimming its jaws. He barreled past his fellow guards while barking sharp orders over his shoulder. He sped for us, yanking on the reins and spraying snow across my face when his ursus slid over the ice in front of ours. His mount blocked the road.
Asher’s eyes were chips of black ice, bleak and frigid when he inclined his head toward me.
The heat that flash of his regard ignited in my belly made me shift miserably on my mount.
Dismissing me in the next instant, he addressed Edan. “The risers have spotted us.”
Edan set his jaw. “Are you not as concerned for my wife’s safety as I am?”
I flinched at the word. How the title of wife grated on my nerves. Lies beget more lies…
“If I weren’t concerned for Marne,” Asher said, “I would have let the risers catch us and—”
The steady rumble in Edan’s chest made Asher bristle.
“Do not take such reckless action again.” Edan’s gaze slid over me, over the snow I had swiped from my face. Fine powder dusted the blankets covering my lap. “Marne has a delicate constitution.”
Working his jaw over what he might have said, Asher spared me a sharp glance. “I apologize.”
“I understand your urgency.” I dared smile at him. I could not help myself. “Please, continue.”

Handing Jared his hot dog and fries, Kitty grinned at the lusty expression suddenly crossing his face. Rebecca was right—the raised collar was going to make the afternoon very long for Jared. Long for her, too.
“What have you two been up to,” he asked, “besides food gathering?”
“Conspiring.”
“Conspiring how to make me rock hard?” he whispered in her ear as she slid in front of him to take the seat on the other side.
“Of course.” She batted an eyelash. “Isn’t that the point?”
“Do you know you have the sexiest damn feet?”
“Uh huh.” She slapped his hand off her thigh. “You’ve told me before. And we have a much larger crowd today, so be a good boy—for a change—if you can.”
He leaned away from her and chortled, then glanced over at the tote board. “It’d be a lot easier to be a good boy if you weren’t so intent on being a naughty girl.” He gave her a crooked smile and laid half the Daily Racing Form across her lap.
She scowled at him when she felt his fingers toying with the hem of her skirt, which had ridden half way up her thigh. “If you persist on being bad, I’ll have to spank you when we get back home.”
He withdrew his hand from under the newspaper and leaned over to whisper in her ear. “Is that a promise?”
She burst out laughing. “Trust me. So how did we do on the last race?”
“Your horse came in right behind mine, so we not only won the race but got the exacta.”
She couldn’t help herself. She quickly leaned over and whispered, “So does that mean I was riding your ass?”
He shook his head and checked out the horses across the way at the starting gate with his binoculars. “So now who is taunting?”
“So how much more do I have to do before I’ve earned a spanking?”
“Not a bit more,” he said out of the corner of his mouth. “You earned that when you came back to the box with your collar at such a rakish angle.”
“Do we have to stay for all the races?”
He let the binoculars hang from his neck and gave her a crooked smile. “You getting a little hot?”
She nodded.
“We can leave after the eighth. Will that be soon enough for you?”
She pouted. “It’ll have to be.”

EXCERPT:

Officer Mathieu Mouton sat at one of the four-top tables along the windows of Café Du Monde and gazed out at the darkening city, a sense of foreboding deep in his gut. The glitz and glitter of New Orleans stared back at him, like a young woman hungry for her beau. If it wasn’t for his sister, Mathieu would have been at home flipping through the channels, scratching his dog, Gator’s head, trying to put another week behind him.
Instead, he checked his phone again.
She needs your help, Mathieu.
He grimaced at the echo of his sister’s words as she’d cornered him in their mamma’s kitchen after the weekly family dinner. Damsels in distress were a dime a dozen in New Orleans and getting entangled in a charity project was not on his to do list. But no one said no to Lola. Not even grandmère. If Lola wasn’t poised to take over the Assistant District Attorney spot opening up in the spring, grandmère would have made Lola a voodoo queen. It ran in their family since grandmère’s grandmère.
The coffee in his cup was cold, the beignet untouched.
If this broad didn’t show up in the next...
The café door opened and a bell chimed. A woman wearing a cherry red coat that covered her from knee to chin stepped in and shook the chill from her body. She carried a backpack that was stuffed until the seams strained.
Mathieu sat forward, propping his elbows on the table as he studied the patron.
She turned, honey blonde hair streaked with golden brown flipping over her shoulder as she surveyed the room. Her eyes snagged on him immediately and he sucked in a deep breath.
“C'est sa couillion.” He was a raving lunatic.
No wonder Lola hadn’t told him the name of the woman he was meeting. She started toward him. Even Mathieu could feel the cosmic pull between their two bodies. It’s what had drawn him to her all those years ago—and was the reason he’d left.
“Mathieu...”
“Lisette Babineaux, haven’t seen you in a minute,” he drawled, rising to shake her hand.
Tricky, Lola. Real tricky.
Lisette’s gaze flicked from his hand to his face before she put her small palm against his. Her skin was still soft and her nails were chipped, but painted with a pale pink polish. Despite the good quality of her clothing, it was dirty and worn. That didn’t make sense. The Babineaux family was well off, and their little princess had never wanted for anything. But a lot changed in the years since he’d left her. He wasn’t the same boy he’d been back then.
She’d always been delicate, refined, as if she’d stepped out of a painting of some debutant ball. Too fragile for a man with his dark tastes, but he’d hungered after her regardless. In his inexperience, he’d thought he could be a different man for her, one who didn’t crave bondage with his women. He’d been wrong.
A handful of years hadn’t changed her appearance all that much. Her hair was shorter, her eyes just as green, and the smattering of freckles preserved the air of youth about her, but there was a wariness to her that was new.
“I know. It’s good to see you.”  She unbuttoned her coat and draped it over the back of her chair. Under the coat she wore a long-sleeved black shirt and jeans. Nothing too flashy, but it had never been her clothes that drew the attention.

EXCERPT:
The traffic surged forward as whatever was holding things up cleared out, and they were over the bridge in no time. Dean leaned back into the seat, listening to the sounds of the city as they wove through lower Manhattan, the rev of truck engines, the squeals of brakes, the snatches of music and screaming and laughter.
He glanced over at the woman at his side, subtly studying her profile. Her blind date was a lucky man. He better realize it too. He didn’t understand why she agreed to it, but if it was what she wanted to do, he supported her one hundred percent. If the guy turned out to be an asshole however, well, then, Dean might have to end up having a conversation with him.
He smiled to himself. God, she would hate that. He could imagine the lecture she would give him if he tried to protect her that way. She was going to have to deal with it though. She knew what she was getting into when she asked him along, it wasn’t like they’d just met yesterday.
The cab turned onto Hudson, and he caught a glimpse of a couple locked in a passionate embrace under a streetlamp. The woman’s sparkly tiara was askew and the man was missing his shirt, but that didn’t seem to deter them one bit. “Why do you think people kiss at midnight?”
Kat smiled at him. “You get cursed if you don’t. If you can’t find someone to kiss, all you have to look forward to is bad luck, hairy palms, and failed online dating attempts all year long.”
He laughed. “Yeah, everyone knows that, but how do you think it began? I mean, how did it get decided that if you don’t kiss someone at midnight, your year is doomed?”
She ran her index finger over her bottom lip as she thought it over. “Well, that whole make loud noises and be obnoxious at midnight thing is supposed to keep the demons away, so maybe it has something to do with that. Maybe a kiss is a protection as well, a safeguard of some sort, to keep evil away from you in the New Year.”
“So, celibacy is evil then?”
“Some people might argue that it is.”
They both laughed. “Maybe demons don’t like kissing? That doesn’t seem right. You’d think demons would be into anything sexual. More ways to sin, you know?”
“It has to be about more than just sex.” She thought for a second and then turned to him, excitement sparkling in her eyes. “Okay, how about this? Kissing is personal. When you kiss, you share another’s breath and breath is life, so maybe kissing is an exchange of sorts, like…” Her fingers danced in the air as the ideas formed in her mind. “Like, sharing your soul. Maybe that’s what it is. You kiss someone and share a piece of your soul with them, that way they keep it safe for you in the New Year. They have a piece of you inside them.” She touched his chest, right over his heart. “Here.” Her eyes met his. “Protected.” A wicked smile blossomed on her lips and then she shrugged. “Otherwise, it’s spinning heads and bad skin for everyone.”

EXCERPT:

“I’d like to turn you over my knee.”
She chuckled. “Me? What did I do?”
He gaped at her. “Other than passionately kissing Holt?”
“I wasn’t kissing Holt, and you know it.”
“Really?” He crossed the rumpus room and shouldered into his bedroom and tossed her onto the bed. She bounced. “Then what the hell was that?” He waved at the ceiling.
Kristi straightened her nightgown, primly covering her bare calves. “He was kissing me.”
His brows bunched. “Not okay. Do you know what seeing that did to me? God, Kristi. It ripped me up inside. I wanted to kill him.”
“He had to know.”
“Know?” He hit a warbling tone that would make America Idol contestants green with envy. “What did he have to know?”
“That I feel nothing for him.”
That shut him up. He stopped, stock-still and stared at her. “Nothing?” This, in a little boy voice.
Other than shock that two of her longtime friends had declared their intentions in the space of one evening? “Not a thing.” She wormed her way off the bed and sashayed toward him, swinging her hips. “Less than nothing, in fact.” She stood on tiptoe to press a kiss on his lips. “It was like kissing my brother. Or my uncle. Or Professor Layhea.”
“Professor Layhea?” Against his will, his lips tweaked. She could tell he was fighting it. His pout was kind of adorable. “Professor Layhea was pretty sexy.”
She kissed him again. Made her way along the line of his jaw to his lobe. Dabbed her tongue in his ear. He shuddered.
“I do find nostril-beards über sexy. And older men who take their baths in Old Spice—ha cha cha.”
His brow rose. His fingers curved around her waist and he pulled her closer. His cock stirred against her belly. “Did you ever kiss Professor Layhea?”
“Just the once.” She laughed when his eyes boggled at her boldfaced lie. She rubbed against his growing ardor. “I had to. I needed an A.”
“Hussy.” He eased her back onto the mattress pinning her there with his hardness, his heat. He hovered over her, staring at her for a long while. Then he slowly lowered his head and kissed her.
It didn’t take long for their teasing mood to completely evaporate. It was replaced by a crackling arousal. His cock pressed into her with an uncomfortable insistence. She wiggled a little bit and he shifted so it pressed against her cleft instead. He rubbed, up and down, like a cat, until she moaned.
“I shouldn’t want you again,” he murmured against her lips.
“Of course you should.”
“You drained me completely fucking dry earlier.”
“We forgot to use a condom.”
He nibbled her neck. “You’re on the pill.”
She hiked up her nightgown, enough so she could hook her legs around his butt. Tugged him closer. “I can’t believe how many times you made me come.”
“How many?”
“I lost count.”
“Really? I noticed two.”
“Oh, there were more than two.” She scored his back with her nails; he shivered. “It was probably a fluke though.”
He reared back. “What?”
“You know. On account of the fact I was so horny.”
“How, um, how horny were you?”
“Pretty horny.”
“How long… I mean, how long since—”
She drew his head back down. “I don’t want to talk about it. Point is, it was probably a fluke.”
“It wasn’t a fluke. I’ll have you know, I’m damn good in bed.”
“We’ll see.”
“What? We’ll see?”
“We haven’t done it in a bed.” This, she stated rather prosaically. “We’ll just see if you can do it again. Make me come like that again.”
A slow smile quirked his lips. “That sounds like a challenge.”
“I do believe it was.”
“Well, madam, if there’s one thing Cameron Jackson cannot do, it’s resist a challenge.” He teased her hem higher and she laughed.
“Yes,” she said. “I know.”

My Review:

Sabrina York has done it again! She has created yet another fabulous story in her Tryst Island series.Devlin's Dare is number 5 in the series and each book in my opinion is just as fabulous or maybe just a tiny bit more fabulous than the last.
