About THE ARTSY GIRL - IN BRONZE:

Lowe

A burned-out teacher puts Kayla Carmichael, a naturally gifted art student, in charge of a group of class clowns, misfits, and troublemakers who are painting a mural on the back of Sandpiper Public High in Daytona Beach, Florida. Can Kayla help her classmates become artists—or at least get them to stop playing games on their cell phones? Kayla also has to deal with possibly insane heavy metal musicians, a gift shop manager who acts as if he’s running a Fortune 500 company, a guy with a vivid violet voice, and an already wealthy teen tennis player who’s about to go pro. Meanwhile, Kayla hopes to get wealthy herself by selling T-shirts she designed. She tries to decide if a manipulated photo she took with a stolen camera is worthy of a national award. And she wonders why she wants to hear—and see—that violet voice more and more.

You can purchase all formats of THE ARTSY GIRL - IN BRONZE at Amazon.

Excerpt from THE ARTSY GIRL-IN BRONZE by T.A. Pack

When she was seven, Kayla went to a birthday party for Brenda Scroggins, a girl in her class at Dolphin Spray Elementary. A lot of Brenda’s classmates called her Bossy Brenda because she always had to have her way and had to be the center of attention even when it wasn’t her birthday.

At the party, almost everything she said started with It’s my special day ....

As in:

“It’s my special day, so I get to open my presents right away—and I get to pick the party hat you’re going to wear.”

“It’s my special day, so we’re going to play with my guinea pig now. He doesn’t bite hard.”

“It’s my special day, so we’re going to watch The Little Mermaid. I’m going to sing all the songs and fast forward through the other parts.”

After the movie, the party girls had strawberry cake with strawberry icing and strawberry ice cream with strawberry sauce. Brenda said, “It’s my special day, so everybody has to put strawberry sauce on their ice cream.”

It wasn’t even the kind of sauce Kayla liked. She liked thick topping with big chunks of strawberry in it, but Bossy Brenda made everyone soak their ice cream with a runny, blood red sauce from a plastic bottle.

When Kayla tried to squirt it on her ice cream— right when she squeezed—the bottle slipped sideways. She sprayed a big spot of red on the plastic tablecloth, and the other girls laughed. Kayla slumped down in her chair so far that her eyes were level with her plate.

“Don’t worry about that, honey,” Brenda’s mom said. “I’ll clean it up later.” Then she went into the kitchen where everybody’s mom except Kayla’s was drinking coffee.

As soon as Mrs. Scroggins left the room, Brenda started telling her guests what was wrong with their birthday presents.

She already had a bazillion stuffed dolphins, she told Jennifer.

She didn’t like Junie B. Jones books, she told Kayla. In fact, she didn’t like books at all.

And she didn’t like board games with spinners because they made her dizzy, she told Jill.

And speaking of board games, Sandy knew good and well that Brenda had wanted Trouble
for her birthday, not Sorry. She’d wanted Trouble because she liked that plastic bubble in the middle. She liked making the popping sound.

Sandy, who lived next door and was Brenda’s best friend until that exact moment, didn’t like being lumped in with and lectured to in front of the other girls, and she angrily reminded Brenda that it was Sorry—not Trouble—that they’d played until almost eleven o’clock at her house. She was positively sure it was Sorry because she’d had to help Brenda read the cards and Trouble doesn’t have any cards.

And she was absolutely positively sure it was Sorry because Brenda had said, “They should call this game Not Sorry,” and she’d laughed and shouted “Not sorry!” every time she got to do something mean to one of Sandy’s game pieces.

Kayla hated arguments. They were full of scary fireworks—bursts of red and yellow that covered her field of vision. The colors weren’t ugly, but they were too bright and changed too fast, which gave her a headache and made her feel wobbly. To distract herself from Sandy and Brenda’s argument, Kayla used her plastic spork to doodle in the straw- berry sauce she’d squirted on the table.

Sandy was one hundred percent absolutely positively sure that Brenda had said Sorry was the most fun game she’d ever played, and Sandy had been excited about giving it to her, but now, on her birthday, Brenda certainly was not acting like a nice little girl like her mom was always telling her to do. In fact, Brenda was acting like a little butthead.

A birthday butthead.

When Jessie Ingram comes to work at his law firm, she is intrigued by the conflicting darkness of Brian's behavior and the tender inconsistencies that hint at something deeper within him.

Despite her interest, she has her own pain, supporting her niece Sara, who has a virulent cancer with aggressive treatments that take such a toll they would not be worth it — except they are Sara's only hope of survival.

Will life’s hardships bring Brian and Jessie together? Will they be able to heal and possibly find love?

Excerpt:

Brian's desk chair sat oddly positioned. Not to one side as one would leave it naturally after rising from it, but pushed back against the desk and perfectly centered in the opening. As she had done the day before, Jessie pulled it out and perched on the edge of the too-tall chair. She opened the file drawer on the left, and found it empty. How very strange. She turned to the other side of the desk, and opened the top utility drawer. Empty, too. The bottom drawer held only one thin file, unlabeled. She pulled it out and placed it on the desk. She opened it to find what she least expected.
The picture of a little girl smiled up at her. She was probably around kindergarten age, judging by the one missing front tooth. Was Brian Van Pelt a father? She turned to the next sheet and found a crayon picture of a house, three people and a dog. The people were labeled Mommy, Daddy and Trudy in a child's crayoned letters. The dog was Ollie. Beside the house was a big tree with a swing hanging from it.
She put the folder back into the drawer and turned to the closet. She didn't mean to be nosy about his personal life. Will said he'd recently divorced. All the personal connections were probably damaged or at least fragile, even with his little girl. Still, it was mind boggling that he didn't have a single work paper in his desk.
He must have work files somewhere.
She opened the closet door and gasped at the sight of open file drawers, some no longer in the frame but tipped on their sides against the marred walls as if someone had thrown them there. It would take great strength to throw a full file drawer. Papers spread everywhere. She looked over her shoulder at the compulsively neat office, and back at the devastation before her. Could these contrasting areas be the workspace of the same man? It was incomprehensible. How could the cold, calculating, maybe even mean man be the man who saved the kindergarten photo and drawing in the place closest to him? From what she could see, Brian Van Pelt almost comprised two different men, the cold calculating one, and the one whose emotions he could not contain. Which was the real Brian? And how could she work with someone whose life was so discordant and chaotic?

Excerpt from Prologue THE THREE GRACES:

Italy 1814
The men gazed in appreciation at the only other object of interest. A lifelike creation in marble of three women adorned the center of the room.  They exhibited such a likeness to the goddesses themselves, The Graces were momentarily paralyzed at the sight. Shapely arms, hips and thighs crafted to perfection. Intensely beautiful, the intimate nature of their relationship evident in every feature.
“When is the duke taking it?” Falier asked.
“Tonight, immediately following the ceremony,” Canova replied.
“He’s anxious to begin,” added Sartori. “That’s why he sent me to find you.”
“I hope you charged the old man enough,” Falier said, still mesmerized by the statue. “They’re exquisite.”
“High praise, indeed, coming from you,” Canova said, with a laugh. “Yes, he paid handsomely.” He lifted his glass. “Let us have a toast.”
Falier took the cue and reached for the remaining glasses on a nearby table. The three moved in close, the sisters following, still touching each one, happy with the obvious camaraderie between the men.
As one, flutes of champagne were raised in tribute.
“A La Trez Grazie!” The men exclaimed in unison.
A gust of wind through the open patio doors caused the candlelight to flicker madly and their shadows to dance.
Canova continued, “May all who look upon them know… ‘their alluring eyes glance from under their brows, and from their eyelids drips desire that unstrings the limbs.’”
Exhilarated beyond measure, the sisters recognized the ancient song commemorating their beauty. So involved in their own spiraling emotions and those of the three gentlemen, they were caught unaware when a trembling force shook the room. Within moments, they were coiled and ensnared completely within the marble likeness.

My gaze shifted to my reflection and the man who came to stand behind me. I saw the

Even though we both had light eyes, my green eyes have hazel undertones, but his eyes were a deep blue. In personality we were polar opposites. There were no two people more different than us. So when he leaned in and whispered in my ear, “We look good together don’t we?”
