a_gentlemans_agreement_coverfinalWhen it comes to love, all deals are off!

Blake Farrington knows exactly who to call when he finds himself needing crisis management. Yes, this task is outside Eunice Howard’s usual realm of responsibilities, but he’s willing to make it worth her time. Plus, she’s ideal for the role. Who better to play his pretend lover than the one woman who knows him almost better than he knows himself?

The last thing Eunice Howard expects when summoned to her boss’s office is a request to play the role of his new love interest to appease his mother, restless to marry him off. Foolishly agreeing, she ventures with him to Farrington Estates for the Thanksgiving holiday. She thought she’d seen all sides of Blake Farrington, but the man who emerges is a man she could easily love.

Their agreement blossoms into a connection neither expected—nor are willing to admit. When the lines between make-believe and reality blur, something phenomenal occurs.

The second they rounded the corner, Eunice snatched her hand away. “What the hell was that?” she asked in a whisper.

“What?” He wasn’t truly that clueless, but played so.

She released a heavy sigh and hiked up the stairs. Inside the bedroom, he was on her heels—right until the moment she stormed into the bathroom and slammed the door in his face.

Blake leaned against the door jamb. “Are you upset?”

“Yes. No. I mean—” She cursed under her breath.

He couldn’t understand why she’d gotten so distressed. Okay, maybe he’d gone a little overboard, but…

Eunice continued. “I don’t know. Did you—”

She yelped once the door slung open and he was standing there. He flashed one of his award-winning smiles in hopes of lightening the mood. She pushed him out of the way and moved toward the bed. Her hair was pulled into a high ponytail, and she wore a simple white nightgown shirt. It was sexy as hell.

“Did you have to take it that far?” she said.

“We’re supposed to be a believable couple, right?” She narrowed her eyes at him. Had she been a bull, he had a feeling this was the moment she would have charged. “I’m sorry. I didn’t realize my words would affect you so…deeply. They were pretty poetic, huh?”

Eunice snatched a pillow from the bed and hurled it at him. What was with him and women with pillows?

“Enjoy the floor, Mr. Poetic.”

Blake barked a laugh.

Eunice climbed in bed.

He sobered.

She pulled the covers to her chin.

Blake pulled his hands to his waist. “Eunice?” When she didn’t answer, he rested his hand on the back of his neck. “Come on. You can’t be serious. You’re really making me sleep on the floor?”

“Goodnight, Prat. Sweet dreams.”

There was a hint of laughter in her tone. Frankly, he didn’t find anything funny. “Seriously, that bed is the size of a small island.”

“In that case, you should feel privileged. You have the entire ocean to yourself.”

Every damn body is a comedian in this house. “Okay. I’ll remember this.” This time, humor played in his tone. “See if you get a Christmas bonus.” He escaped into the bathroom, did his before bed rituals, then returned and made a pallet on the floor. Using the remote, he shut off the lights, then attempted to find a comfortable position.

“Blake?”

Ah-ha. I knew she’d feel sorry for me. “Mmm-hmm,” he hummed.

“Your story… This is going to sound strange, but it actually happened to me in Central Park. Weird, huh?”

Not weird at all. Unlike her story, his had been steeped in truth. All except for the approaching her part. Unbeknownst to Eunice, he’d seen her in the park doing exactly what he’d stated. He’d also wanted to ask her out. But before he could, he discovered she’d recently started working for his company. Imagine his surprise when they’d bumped into each other at the annual Spring Fling he threw for his staff.

“Huh. Yeah. That is weird.”

Excerpt:

Mama Pearl tiptoed slowly toward the old cars, her steps hesitant but determined. The first few cars she looked into were empty. She continued toward the back when a bad odor filled her nose. With her face twisted up, Mama Pearl took deep breaths as she continued walking.

A scream lodged in her throat as she approached the last car. “Oh, dear Lord,” Mama Pearl whispered in shock. Two pieces of sticks, resembling legs, were hanging out the opened back door. Her heart slamming against her chest, Mama Pearl walked closer and saw the scrawny, young girl shaking uncontrollably in the backseat. She smelled like rotten garbage. Tears filled Mama Pearl’s eyes.

Her heart slamming against her chest, Mama Pearl walked closer and saw the scrawny, young girl shaking uncontrollably in the backseat. She smelled like rotten garbage. Tears filled Mama Pearl’s eyes.

Mama Pearl quickly rested the box in her hand on top of the car and leaned inside to look at the young girl. Suddenly, two pair of red, haunted eyes stared up at her, piercing her soul.

“Help me,” the weak voice begged a little above a whisper.

Mama Pearl gasped loudly and pulled her head out of the car. She cushioned her weak body against the car as her jelly feet felt as if they were about to crumble. “Lord, dear Lord,” Mama Pearl muttered. “Dear Lord, dear Lord.”

Mama Pearl was not a stranger to the homeless people scattered all over Kingston. She was a long-standing viewer of the poverty that hit so many Jamaicans and only seemed to get worse, day by day.

Her heart bled as she turned and stared at the sick child again. She looked as if she was a minute away from death’s door.
Tiny rambled some gibberish and moaned in agony as sharp needles pricked her all over her ice-cold body. Her teeth chattered, and her eyes rolled around listlessly in her head.

Twist By Roni Teson ~ Write Now Literary Virtual Book tour ~ Interview ~

Twist

By Roni Teson

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Interview:
Crystal: Today as part of this Write Now Literary Virtual Book tour, I have the chance to ask Roni Teson a few questions. Welcome Roni, I'm so excited to have you here today. Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?
Roni: I got serious about writing when I was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer. I finished writing my first novel during cancer treatment. That catalyst helped me follow my dream. I went into remission, but my relationship and job didn’t make it through the treatment.  I was devastated--then when they found another unrelated cancer in my thyroid that doctor said to me, well you have your life.  Real simple words that snapped me out of my funk, and launched me into a life rebuild, and finding a publisher.
Crystal: Where did you come up with the idea for Twist?
Roni: When I moved into my current residence at the ocean, there is a sign outside my window on the sand. “B”. I was going to get a dog and name her Bea, instead I wrote the book about Beatrice Malcolm. Bea.
Crystal: What are you currently working on?
Roni: A contemporary fiction novel, The Bishop Girls, after Molly Bishop’s sister dies, family secrets are revealed one after another, she soon discovers her entire life is a lie and she might be more like her con-artist relatives than she suspects.
Crystal: Do you have any special routine that you follow when you are writing?
Roni: I wake up at 4am and write every day. When I get to my final rewrites I read the entire book out loud from a printed document and mark it up. Write it first, edit it after it’s written.
Crystal: Did you have to do a lot of research this book or any other?
Roni: Not a lot but I’m always looking things up, like FBI locations in Seattle, and I spent some time for TWIST learning about CJD, the human form of Mad Cows Disease.
Crystal: Who are some of your favorite authors that you like to read?
Roni: John Green, Stephen King, Jay Asher.
Crystal: Is there a genre you haven't written that you would like to try?
Roni: I write from ideas that spring up often, I don’t pay attention to genre. It’s interesting that I tend to have young protagonists. Twist is not a YA book, because of the sex. It’s a Romance Suspense with a young protagonist. Many of the reviewers call it a YA because she’s 16.  I will write my memoir about the cancer battle and life rebuild after I finish The Bishop Girls. Then Twist Two.
Crystal: Do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?
Roni: Yes, when Luke wakes up in the hospital and doesn’t know who he is. He’s been brutally beaten, left for dead and the beating was made to look like Teddy Malcolm did it, an attempt to have Bea lead the FBI to her father. His mother is right there, and he doesn’t recognize her, he wants this guy Luke to talk to these people so they will shut-up and leave him alone.
Author's Favorite Scene Excerpt:
“Wait, wait,” the nurse says, hurrying over. “You have a tube in your throat.”
I’m floating anyways, so what does it matter? Smooth is how I feel. I could be on a raft or a waterbed, rolling with the tide. I close my eyes and I’m lying in the sand. I hear the ocean—waves are crashing while the tiny grains beneath me move like water.
The woman whispers, “He’s smiling.”
Everything darkens, like I’m under a cloud cover. I open my left eye and it’s her. That woman is blocking my sun! But those sandy lumps I’m laying on lull me into nirvana and I’m not mad at her anymore.
I feel so good I want to meet the Dalai Lama. No, wait—I am the Dalai Lama.
My arms and legs are extensions of contentment—the Dalai Lama’s words, not mine. Nothing bothers me. Fingers are touching me everywhere, first my wrist, then my neck and . . . Ouch! She’s pulling my throat out of my mouth.
My eyes pop open.
“Just the breathing tube,” somebody says.
What?
I don’t understand. But I feel like I know everything.
How can that be?
B. B. B. B. B. B.
Why does that letter stick in my brain?
“Did he just say something?” the man says.
“No,” the nurse says. “He’s still heavily sedated.”
I drift in a cloud that’s warm and cozy. Bluest of blue skies with a purple haze above me, and wow, it feels so good. Darn that annoying background noise with its staccato rhythm hammering away at my floating vapor. A white, soft piece falls down, then another and wham! I feel a push on my body that causes my cloud to disappear.
The voice is grinding with nonstop questions. “Do you feel this? . . . Do you feel that? . . . Luke?”
The man and the woman stare at me. She cries. His face wrinkles inward, like a starfish tossed up on the shore.
I wish this Luke would answer so I can go back to floating in peace. I lift my arms to cross them and almost pull the needle out.
“Luke,” the doctor says again. “You’ve had an accident. You’re okay, now.”
Who’s this Luke guy? Whoever you are, answer up!
