The Heart (Weekend Getaways) by J.E. Wiseman ~ Review ~

I have now had the pleasure of reading two books by J.E. Wiseman. I found The Heart to be a very touching story that really touched my heart.

When Emily lost her fiancé her world is completely changed. She tries to go on with life the best she can by making a few changes. She keeps her job though and it surprises her when a stranger starts appearing every day. She feels a strange connection to Walter and the connection grows more as they start to talk each day as he enjoys his coffee and pie. I don't want to tell you too much about this touching storyline. I really liked the connection between Emily and Walter. I found The Heart to be a great story of true love being able to over come any obstacle placed in it's path.

The other thing I really enjoyed about this book is J.E. Wiseman has given us a taste of his wonderful poetry. I have read some of poems before and I always enjoy them.  I was pleasantly surprised to find a short piece within this great book.

This is a very quick read so if you are looking for a short touching story, with some romance included I think you will enjoy this story.

I was given the opportunity to read this story so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my pleasure to share my thoughts with you on The Heart

Kidnapped and held prisoner by menacing Scottish brigand, the notorious McCloud, Violet Wyeth does her best to persevere…and resist his rakish charms. Ewan has every intention of marrying Lady Kaitlin MacAllister. He desperately needs the entrée into the ton this bride can provide. But when his bride is delivered—bound and gagged—it’s not Kaitlin. It’s Violet Wyeth—the girl who betrayed him and ruined his life when he was a boy. He keeps her, determined to punish her for her sins. But when he discovers the truth about what really happened so long ago, and seething passion rises between them, he can no longer hold on to his rusty grudge. By the time he realizes how much he loves Violet—that he always has—he’s lost her.
All he can do is follow her. Follow her into the bowels of hell—and partake in the torment of the glittering London Season, where the harpies are far more dangerous than a Scottish brigand.

Holy Heaven. She would never take a bath for granted again.
Violet stumbled on the stairs and the contents of the heavy bucket sloshed, dousing her with hot water. She sucked in a breath as pain seared. She set the bucket on the landing and pulled her skirts up. Her skin was red. She ruffled the tatters of her petticoats, waiting for the sting to subside.
The door to the Laird’s solar swung open. She stepped back so it wouldn’t hit her and it slammed into the wall. The McCloud glowered down at her. His gaze stalled on her bare legs. It was riveted—until she dropped her skirts—then he snapped, “What the hell is taking so long?” His glanced back at her damp skirts and his frown darkened. He picked up the last bucket and carried it to the tub, dumping it in himself. “For god’s sake. How long does it take to bring a few measly buckets up from the kitchen?”
A few measly buckets? It had taken twelve trips, each with a bucket that weighed near as much as she. Violet glared at him. “Is that enough?” She probably didn’t need to clip the words quite so much but she had already worked for hours. She was tired and sweaty and her skin ached and Morna was waiting for her to come help prepare dinner.
He swished his hand in the water. “Yes. I suppose that will do.”
Not a thank you. Not a smile. Nothing.
Beast.
She whirled and started for the door.
“Where do you think you’re going?” His voice rumbled, a deep tenor. Her steps slowed.
“Back to the kitchen.” She frowned at him over her shoulder. “I have work to do.”
“You have work to do here.”
“I beg your pardon?” What did he want her to do now, wash his bottom?
“You’re going to bathe me.”
Her heart stilled at his words, his intent, and especially his expression. “Wh-what?”
“Come now, Violet. The laird of the manor can’t be expected to scrub his own back, can he now? Be a good girl, close the door and come over here.”
She gaped at him. Gaped. He expected her to remain in a room with a naked man? He expected her to touch him?
“Close your mouth. You look like a trout.”
“But…I c-can’t. I can’t b-bathe you.”
“You can. And you will.” His eyes glimmered with something other than humor. The unspoken threat hummed in the stony chamber. “You may want to turn around while I undress, unless you want an early education.” He began to unbutton his shirt.
With an undignified eep, Violet whirled and showed him her back until she heard the splash and his gusty sigh.
“All right, girl. Get to work. Scrub my back.” He gestured to a chunk of soap and a sponge on a small table. She picked them up, approached the tub and knelt behind him, trying not to stare at the bunching muscles, the broad expanse of tanned skin. She couldn’t help but notice it was covered with scars. Long and short, crisscrossing over one another. As though he’d been brutally beaten and lashed time after time after—“Did you close the door?”
Her bubbling sympathy evaporated in a rush. She stuck her tongue out at him, but only because he couldn’t see. Then, with a heavy sigh, she levered herself off the floor and closed the door. Well, slammed it.
His chuckle annoyed her more.
He leaned forward and peeped at her over his shoulder. “Come along now. My back isn’t going to scrub itself.”
She took her place behind him again, being very careful not to look at his broad, be-furred chest as she approached. She wet the soap and sponge and created a lather. Being very careful not to touch him, she began to scour his back. He winced. “Not so hard.”
His plaintive tone probably shouldn’t have sent a shard of evil satisfaction through her, but it did. This man had been a boor to her from the moment he’d found her on the floor in Callum MacAllister’s cottage. She dug deeper.
He lurched forward. “Ouch!”
“Hold still,” she muttered, making a wide swath across the ridged skin. “You’re filthy. I need to scrub.”
“I am not filthy.”
“You are. Stop wriggling.”
Amazingly, he did, though her efforts bordered on abuse. But my, it felt good.
When she started on his neck and ears, he caught her wrist. “All right. I think that’s enough.”
“I’m not done.”
“Oh, you’re not done.” He tugged her around to the side of the tub so she faced him. She focused on his crooked nose, schooled her attention not to drift lower. “Now it’s time for you to scrub my front.”
She really disliked his tone. There was mischief—and something much darker—coiling in there. “Fine.” She dropped to her knees and wet the sponge again, but rather than dunking it, merely skimmed the surface of the water.
Fortunately the bath was murky, so she couldn’t see anything. But she knew what was down there and she didn’t want to find it by accident. She trained her attention on his chest, and her heart lurched.
A long, nasty scar scored him. Like a puckered lightning bolt, it made its jagged way from his left nipple down to his belly. Her pulse skittered. Her breath snagged in her throat. She’d only ever seen a scar like that once before.
A scar exactly like that.
Her gaze snapped back to his face. She looked at him. Really looked at him, perhaps for the first time. Her mouth went dry. The gray eyes laced by thick black lashes. The broad, smiling mouth. The curve of his jaw.
It couldn’t be. Could it?
“W-where did you get that scar?”
He glanced down and stilled. Annoyance flickered across his features. “Every man has scars.”
“Not-not like that.” She sat back on her haunches. She didn’t realize she was squeezing the sponge until water seeped through her skirts.
“All right. A knife fight.”
“Knives don’t cut like that.” It was uneven and rippled, as though the flesh and been shorn off in places and sliced in others.
“Well, it was a goddamn knife fight. I was in a vicious battle with a man in an alley. I gutted him.” His lip curled into a sneer. “Does it frighten you, my lady?”
“No.” But that was a lie. It did frighten her. Because Ewan, her friend, the boy who had saved her, had gotten an eerily similar wound rescuing her from a watery grave. And surely this wasn’t Ewan. It couldn’t be.
Ewan was gentle and sweet. He had liked her, maybe loved her. He had kissed her. And this man… This man had taken her prisoner and mauled her and put her to work.
And she hated him.
He couldn’t be Ewan. He couldn’t. It would break her heart.
“Goddamn it, girl, finish washing me. The water’s getting cold,” he barked
But she couldn’t. She needed to know. She had to know.
“It wasn’t a knife. It was ice.” A whisper, but he heard it. He froze, his gaze locked to hers. “You jumped in and found me in the water. Lifted me out. But you couldn’t get out yourself.”
“I don’t know what you’re babbling about.”
But he did. She could see it in his eyes. There, for a flash of an instant, she saw that boy in his eyes.
She licked suddenly dry lips. “Ewan? Is it you?”
He rose from the tub in an unholy rush. She didn’t have time to glanced away. The vision of his naked body, hard and lean, scarred and perfect, burned on her brain. He grabbed a cloth and covered his loins.
“This bath is over. Get out.”
She stood. Tried desperately not to tremble. “It is you. It is.”
“Get out. Go!”
“What happened to you, Ewan?”
A dark cloud lowered on his already stormy brow. “What happened to me? You mean how did I become the beast that I am?” The vitriol in his voice made her shake, but she didn’t back down.
“No, Ewan. Where did you go? No one would tell me and I always wondered…”
Every muscle in his body tensed, vibrated. Violet knew, because she could see them all, a magnificent panoply.
She should have been afraid. She should have been horrified. She should have skittered away like a frightened little rabbit. But she wasn’t afraid. She didn’t run.
She knew—knew—her Ewan would never hurt her.
Indeed, as he stared at her, his fury passed. He scrubbed a palm over his broad face. “Go,” he croaked. His tone was laced with an emotion she couldn’t decipher. Desolation? Greif? “Just go.”
This time, she did.

Cowboy Heat: Western Romance for Women ~ by Delilah Devlin, Randi Alexander, Shoshanna Evers, Sabrina York ~ Review

When I saw the lineup for Cowboy Heat, I knew it was a book that I must read! This is a great lineup of authors who are very talented. Each story contained great characters and scenes that were oh wow, steamy! I love a book about cowboys and this book contains fourteen stories awesome stories about fourteen HOT cowboys. What more could a girl ask for?

There are many great stories included and it would be really hard to choose a favorite. Some of my favorite authors that are included in this anthology. Randi Alexander has a great story about a couple that has both been through a lot. They just might be what each other is looking for. I really liked this story.

Sabrina York has a story titled A Cowboy for Delilah. The title was enough to interest me. The story was even better!

There were several authors that I had not had the opportunity to read yet and I know now that I certainly would love to read more of their work. I don't think their was an author in this anthology that I would not love to read more of!

There are so many great stories I could go on and on about all of them, however I think I will just let you grab your own copy and read each of these steaming hot stories for yourself. Each story is just right for a quick read before bed, or while you are waiting for an appointment. I have to say that a few of them I would love to find out more about the characters in a few of the stories.

If you enjoy steaming hot stories, about extremely hot cowboys and the women that love them, then I think you will really enjoy this anthology.

I was given the opportunity to read this book so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Cowboy Heat.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

jennifer04 Retouched cropped
Everyone has to begin somewhere. I began my journey to becoming an author long before I published anything. Storytelling was something I did every night before bed with my father. We would create such wonderful tales together, far better than anything in books. It sprung from our imaginations. My mother ingrained a love for the written world early on. Then my grandpa gave me his first type writer when I was in elementary school. You can guess the rest.
But it was many years later, after dabbling in all the arts, that I realized writing was my greatest passion. I grew up on the far outskirts of the Metroplex of Texas, a busy world of cities within cities. It’s easy to get lost in a place like this. Some might argue that Dallas is the “New York” of the south and I might agree. Rather than worry about being a little fish in a big pond, however, I made up my mind long ago to follow my dreams. The funny thing about dreams is they have a tendency to come to life in unexpected ways.
My best friends were my twin next door neighbors. (Inspiration for the three main ladies in Silver Hollow) We made up our own little book club, complete with readings and brainstorming sessions. I loved reading to them and they loved “the story,” as we dubbed whatever project we were working on. As we grew up and went on to different careers and schools, and I tried three different universities. Needless to say, college didn’t pan out well for me. So I did the next sensible thing and decided to write “for real.”
By day I am personal assistant and simple childcare worker at the local Learning Center for preschoolers. But by night, I moonlight as an independently published author of Young/New Adult and fantasy novels. My hope is that you enjoy my books and are encouraged to follow your dreams as well.

BLURB:

Rob Matheson's a fighter. Flattening enemies with his fists or with his legendary practical jokes, he's a tough enemy, and a troublesome friend. But Rob doesn't know how much longer he can keep up the act. As his buddies get married one by one, he's left with his lonely life - and the sinking feeling he lost more than his dreams when he traded them for a thick skin. Now Rob's father has issued a challenge - he'll give 200 acres of prime Montana ranchland to the first of his four sons to wed. No conditions, no meddling. Could this be a chance to become the man he really wants to be?

Morgan Tate's worked for years to climb the ladder to a top job at Cassidy Wineries, but Duncan Cassidy, the boss' son, always stands in her way. Now he's issued an ultimatum; marry him or he'll make sure she never works in the wine industry again. Morgan wants marriage - and a family - but not with Duncan. A certain cowboy in Chance Creek, Montana, has stolen her heart.

When Rob offers Morgan a proposition - marry him and split the land - they both find themselves with an ethical dilemma. They don't know each other well enough to wed, but they can't lie about their intentions before God and man, either.

Now they've got sixty days to fall in love, and a passel of family and friends determined to keep them apart. The victims of Rob's previous jokes are lining up to get their revenge, and Morgan's half-sister, Claire, is stirring up their mother's past.

Will it take the biggest practical joke of all to convince the world - and themselves - that they're truly meant to be man and wife?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
“It isn't a joke,” he said softly. “I want a chance to change. To be the man I know I can be. I wish I could say that I love you, that I want to spend every waking moment of my life with you, and ask you to marry me for real. I think I will be able to say that to you someday soon. I think…really soon.” He swallowed hard at the very thought. “But we've known each other for so short a time, I can't say it yet. I'm sorry.” He got to his knees again, ready to stand up and head right back out the door. He never should have said anything to Morgan. Now he'd probably blown his chance with the only woman he thought he could fall in love with someday.
“I understand,” Morgan said calmly, freezing him in place. “I appreciate how honest you've been. Sit down again for a minute. Can I tell you what I want?”
He sat down, wrapped his arms around his knees and waited, his heart pounding at what she might say. This was by far the strangest conversation he'd ever had. The most liberating, too. “Definitely.”
“I want three things and I'll do just about anything to get them.” She looked him straight in the eye, though he had a feeling it was hard for her to do so. “First, I want a winery—which means I need a vineyard.” She held up one finger. “Second, I have some money saved up, but even if I had some land, I'd still need about twenty-thousand dollars more to buy rootstock and get it started.” Another finger. “And third…”
“Third…?” Rob held his breath.
“I want a baby.”
Heat blossomed inside him the moment his brain processed the concept of making a baby with Morgan. Images of her in his bed, writhing beneath him, gazing at him as he joined with her, clouded his head until he couldn't think straight. Morgan wasn't saying no to his proposal. In fact, maybe she was saying… “A baby with me?”
FAR GONE by Laura Griffin ~ Guest Post ~ GIVEAWAY
I am so honored to have Laura Griffin Stop by today. She is here to talk to us about Far Gone, which is a WONDERFUL story. You may find my review here. Welcome Laura, I'm so happy to have you here today!
Thanks for inviting me to visit!
It’s been an exciting time with the release of my first hardcover book, FAR GONE. Holding the book in my hands for the first time was a joyful moment!
FAR GONE is the story of Andrea Finch, an Austin homicide detective who is on leave from her job when she gets a distress call from her younger brother in West Texas. She wants to ignore his plea for cash, but she thinks something is very wrong so she goes out to investigate. She soon meets FBI agent Jon North, who is working undercover to solve a murder that may be part of a broader plot... and he believes Andrea’s brother is involved.
The new book is a bit different from the Tracers series I have been writing lately.  Both the main characters, Andrea and Jon, are new. But readers of the Tracers series will recognize a few familiar Tracers who play a role in the forensic aspects of the investigation. It was fun to weave some of my favorite characters from previous books into the story.
Writing FAR GONE was an adventure because I got to meet and interview all sorts of law enforcement people, from cops to FBI agents. I had fun writing the action scenes in the story, but I also enjoyed the romance between Jon and Andrea. From the very beginning, Andrea doesn’t trust Jon because she knows he’s investigating her brother... and yet she feels drawn to him anyway. I liked watching their romance unfold along with the mystery. I hope you will, too!
I’m giving away a signed copy of the book, so leave a comment if you’d like a chance to win!
Belong To You (Riding Tall #10) by Cheyenne McCray ~ Review ~
I have had the wonderful opportunity to read quite a few books by the talented Cheyenne McCray now. I have enjoyed each book and found each one to be a real page turner. Belong To You I found not only to be a real page turner full of suspense but also a tear jerker in places.
I felt an instant connection to Anna Batista. She is just one really wholesome family girl, living to help take care of her family. She loves her Aunt, Uncle, and little cousins and is so pleased that they are all together.
She attends a debate with her best friend. Her best friend's brother (a jerk if I may add) is debating the current sheriff (a real good guy). Anna meets Sheriff Mike McBride and there is an instant connection between these two. After much personal debate Anna decides to meet Mike for drinks and the connection grows deeper.
However when the jerk Chad finds out about this blooming relationship he adds some major drama to the situation that makes me like the jerk even less. I won't tell you too much about this because it is a major part of the storyline.  However this does lead to some major tension between Anna and Mike and also leads to some very serious tear jerker moments.
I really enjoyed this story, It didn't take me very long at all to read. There is plenty of drama, a few steamy scenes, and some really sweet family moments. On the whole I just really enjoyed this story.
I know I will be looking forward to reading more of  Cheyenne McCray's work. It doesn't seem to matter what genre she writes in, she writes one really awesome storyline that totally keeps me entertained. I have really enjoyed this Riding Tall series and I look forward to reading more of these books as well. Honestly I'm looking forward to reading what ever Ms. McCray has out next as well.
I was given the opportunity to read this book so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Belong To You.
Stealing Fire by Susan Sloate ~ Review ~
I hosted a blog tour for Stealing Fire by Susan Sloate a few months ago. The more I read about Stealing Fire during the tour the more I just had to read this book. It just sounded like a really awesome story and let me tell you I really was not disappointed at all. I really enjoyed this book. I found myself not being able to set it down. I just could not wait to see what was going to happen next or how in the world this wonderful couple was ever going to find their way together.
Amanda Harary is trying to get a break in the musical business, however it's just not happening for her. So she is currently working at a hotel. She gets to met and talk to lots of interesting people and she is great at fixing any problem that may arise for their clients. When she meets Beau Kellogg, her life changes. She feels like she has met a real celebrity because she listened to the songs he wrote when she was a child. They were some of her very favorite.
I love how these two make a connection over the phone without meeting for quite a while. I love that Beau gives Amanda confidence and I love that Amanda gives Beau the peace and tranquility that he needs to be creative again.
There were so many things I truly enjoyed about this story. Their may be an age difference between these two but as I always say age is just a number. Does it really matter when you have found the love of your life? These two have a LOT of things that get in their way of being together. My heart broke for each of them many times through out the story. At one point I found myself with tears in my eyes saying to myself "please tell me this is not how this wonderful story is going to play out". It wasn't, the ending was not quite what I was expecting but I hope that it is leading where I think it was.
This is the first book I have had the pleasure of reading by Susan Sloate, however I did host several tours for her books. They all sound great and I would love to read more of her work. I found her voice to be one that I truly enjoyed reading. So I know I will be stalking blog tours to host Susan again when ever she has another tour and I'll be looking forward to reading what ever she has out.
I was given the opportunity to read this book so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Stealing Fire.
BLURB:
This summer, I’d planned to celebrate my eighteenth birthday in Europe with my fellow Manhattanites—Taddy Brill, Blake Morgan, and Vive Farnworth—until I caught my boyfriend screwing my mother. According to the police report, this vomit-inducing incident happened around the same time I’d supposedly blown-up my mother’s penthouse. Like I’m walking around Soho with a stick of dynamite in my Louis Vuitton purse—not! Now, my besties and I are in jail.
Officer Ford Gotti, the Harley-wheelin’ biker cop who arrested us, keeps sticking his perfectly-sculpted nose into my case. His inked body is jacked like a superhero, and he says I can trust him. He wants me to fess up. I won’t. Not again. Why should I? My friends and I had a previous stint in juvie that nearly destroyed us. I gotta protect them and keep my mouth shut. Right?
—Lex Easton, women’s studies major, motorcycle enthusiast, and virgin.
*the set-up: Alone in the jail cell after Lex’s besties are bailed out, Officer Ford Gotti asks her a few questions.
Shoulders broad, Officer Gotti stood tall near the cell. The doors opened. My friends walked out and waved goodbye.
He stared at me as if ready to come back for round two. His face said, “LIAR!”
I hadn’t lied to Officer Gotti. Earlier, I’d admitted my guilt. I just hadn’t corrected Taddy and Vive as they professed my so-called innocence moments ago. Nor had I been honest to the judge when we’d pleaded not guilty.
Okay, Okay, Okay. Who was I kidding? Certainly not myself. I was a lying piece of Hedda’s poo. How could I tell the truth? What if this went to trial? What if Birdie didn’t take the blame? We’d learned from past experience not to tell the authorities a thing. They weren’t our friends. I was mad at myself for admitting I’d started the fire when they first asked. I hadn’t imagined it would end in an entire penthouse floor being destroyed. The doors closed. He didn’t leave with them. He kept on watching me. A guard walked back and forth checking the cells. I used that time to ask myself two important questions. One, was I nervous to talk to him by myself? Hells yeah! And two, could I keep my mouth shut, not telling the truth without my besties here to talk for me? Maybe. Maybe not. Suddenly, from the top of my head to my tippy toes, a tingle started. It wasn’t from the synthetic orange fabric I wore. Oh no. This was a sensation of hyperawareness. I’d felt self conscious before but this was ridiculous.
His expressive face, catalog model-worthy for sure, talked to me. His mind was racing in judgments about who I was and what I’d done. His accusatory stares infuriated me.
For some unknown reason, I wanted his approval more than anything. I ached for him to believe me and that today was an accident, a misunderstanding.
Fudge, I didn’t even know him. I shouldn’t give a flip what he thought about me. I didn’t care how the TV portrayed me or what Birdie and her fans thought of me either. This explosion wasn’t only putting my plus-sized bum on the line but my besties boney butts as well. I had to stick to the story.
After the guard had gone and it was just me alone in my cell, Officer Gotti stepped closer.
Both of us remained silent.
The room spun as my WWF, Scorpion King, Hulk on a Harley, inked up demi-god mirage in the desert returned.
My vision blurred. Confused? Heck yeah. Tummy tossing? I felt oddly aroused. I know!
At a time like this, how could I be…horny? I just blew up Mom, and my two besties had left me. My hormones rocketed into overdrive. I forced a smile to show he didn’t make me nervous. Heat came off my skin. Slowly I wiped the perspiration off the back of my neck by knotting my hair into a bun. That was a ladylike trick I’d learned at Avon Porter.
“You okay? Now that your friends are gone.”
“Woo, it’s warm in here is all.” I was scared as hell but I wouldn’t show it.
The Pulse: Book 1 in the Pulse Trilogy by Shoshanna Evers ~ Review ~
I have to admit that this is the very first post-apocalyptic book I have ever read. I was a little nervous because this is out of my realm of normal reading material. However, I find that I like to take a step out of my reading comfort zone and grab something a little different. The more I read about this series the more I wanted to try it. I have to say I'm really glad that I gave this series a chance. I really enjoyed The Pulse
Emily Rosen is a strong, independent woman that is trying to survive after the Pulse in New York City. She is living on the track at Grand Central and it is anything but a pleasant experience for her. She ends up in a LOT of trouble and there is plenty of drama that kept me turning pages to see what was going to happen to her next. This was a very steamy but also a very suspenseful book.
When Emily runs away from Grand Central she meets up with Christopher Mason. Mason has been living on the streets since the Pulse and has done fairly well. That is until he gets himself mixed up with some of Emily's problems. These two end up on the move together. Which leads to some very steamy moments between these two. They really do have a connection they just don't know if they can make it together. There is so much going on and so much violence everywhere.
I have to say this book really makes you think about what life would be like if we had no computers, no electricity, pretty much no modern conveniences that we are all use to taking for granted.
I think that Shoshanna Evers has done a fantastic job of writing a very intriguing story with a great plot and some very erotic moments. I have the other two books in this series in my to be read pile and I am looking forward to see what happens to more of the characters that I meet in this story. I'm sure that Ms. Evers has created another great storyline for them as well. So stay tuned for more review to come soon.
If you are a fan of Shoshanna Evers already but this type of book is a step out of your comfort zone I think you might want to give it a try. I know I am sure glad that I did. If you have not read any of her work yet give this one a shot. It really is a great story.
I was given the opportunity to read this book so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you on The Pulse
