Deja Vu by D.J. Starling ~Review ~

I just finished reading Deja Vu by D.J. Starling and I had to take just a little while to get my words together after reading this very interesting and fascinating story.

I really liked Deanna, this poor girl has been through a LOT in her life and suffers horrible nightmares. I admired her wonderful friendship with Faith. These two show us what a blessing true friendship can be.

Josh has his hands full with a thriving new career. He doesn't think he has time in his life for a relationship.

I loved how Josh and Deanna kept bumping into each other in so many different places. They truly were meant to meet up again. When they start to explore their feeling for each other and try to build their relationship it isn't easy. I have to admit there are several times I would have loved to have smacked Josh.

Deanna finally allows her friend Faith to explore regression therapy. I honestly had never heard anything about this until I read this story. I truly found this to be very fascinating and completely interesting. I LOVED this part of the story. There is a LOT of drama involved here and it kept me turning the pages quickly. I don't want to tell you to much even though I could go on and on about this part of the story. I found it so intriguing. However, I sure do not want to spoil the story for you. So you must click the link to buy this book so you can read all about Deanna's past and what is causing her nightmares. It really is a must read.

I enjoyed all the characters in this story. I liked Josh's grandma Anna, and his friend Michael. All the characters were entertaining and made for a great story.

I can not wait to see what D.J. Starling has in store for us lucky readers next. I have the next book FANTASYLAND in my to be read pile. I can't wait to see what story this fabulous new author has written next.

I was given the fabulous opportunity to read Deja Vu to share my thoughts with you. As always it has my been my pleasure to share my thoughts about this fascinating story with you.

The atrocities Anita describes send Sydney, Blue and Dan on a quest that takes them across India after a dangerous and, up until now, untouchable, figure. While Sydney struggles to accept her true nature she realizes that it is the only way to end decades of abuse and exploitation. But Rye fears that she will lose herself, becoming no better than the monster she fights against.

Excerpt:

I'd been warned about this pack. Growing larger by the day, it was led by an aggressive alpha male the color of dirty water. This must be him, I thought, as the largest of the three, his head wide, fur the muddy brown of an engorged river, growled at Blue. The compactness of his body spoke of strength and survival. When he barked the saliva that shot from his mouth caught a ray of sunlight streaming through the thick foliage around us.

Muddy Water stepped forward, revving his growl like a teenager on a motorbike. The bitch in the brush flanked our left side and when I turned right, two young dogs, their ears still soft from puppyhood, glowered at me.

The owner of the guest house where I lived warned me to take a stick if I planned on running. "Just in case," she'd said with a dip of her head and a flip of her hand. Because of her advice I carried a light but solid piece of bamboo about twice the thickness of my thumb. I tapped it on the ground in front of me as I backed toward Blue, keeping my eyes forward, focused on the alpha but paying close attention to my peripheral vision, watching the dogs to my sides.

When I reached Blue he moved backwards with me, slowly and deliberately. But the dogs started to follow with us. We stopped, and raising the stick over my head, I brought it down hard onto a rock. The loud sound and sudden movement spooked the pups to my right but the alpha male just growled louder.

The two dogs flanking Muddy Waters went crazy barking, the force of their calls lifting their front paws off the ground. The mother and the young ones joined in raising a ruckus that certainly beat mine. Blue, his front paws planted on the road, exposed his teeth and growled, his pitch wavering up and down. He wanted me to tell him it was OK to attack. I could feel his energy bundling up inside him, roiling around, soon I'd have no control.

“Stop preaching to me. I don’t want to hear it anymore. I’ve had enough of your self-righteousness.” The words continued to cut Jordan’s heart; words that she never heard before coming from the mouth of her husband, Eric. “You knew how I was before we got married.” His tone deepened with every word.
Standing in front of the sink, Jordan was frozen and motionless in the middle of the kitchen. She held the dish towel in one hand and a plate in the other. She turned and faced Eric, whose eyes were cold and hard. The verbal blows kept coming. Her mouth opened wide, but no words could be formed when he uttered the deadly words, “I want a divorce.”

Character Interview:

Today I have asked Willow Jefferies and Colin Vanderhayden from Captivating the CEO by Sara Daniel to interview each other. Here is the transcript:

Colin: I made up a list of questions for us. Do you want to ask me first, Willow, or should I interview you first?

Willow: You made up a list of questions? Are you serious? Let’s just wing it. It’ll be more fun.

Colin: I’m expecting a call in five minutes. We need to cut to the chase. First question, what are your plans for the future?

Willow: *rolls eyes* Definitely to take you to the back room and strip you out of this suit and discover if your underwear matches your blue tie.

Colin: You need a serious answer. This interview is going to be printed. For example, my plan for the next year is to increase my portfolio by ten percent, and my ten-year plan is to—

Willow: *yawwwwwn* My massages to work out your tension are obviously not having an effect. How about your plans for this weekend? You want to go skydiving and then I’ll seduce you?

Colin: *chokes on his coffee*

Willow: You’re right. Who wants to wait for this weekend? Let’s do it now.

Colin: We’re in the middle of an interview. Can we at least attempt some professional decorum and maybe one more question?

Willow: Of course. You’re running the show. How about this question? Why did you hire me as your massage therapist when I am constantly blowing off that professionalism you try so hard to maintain?

Colin: Because your hands on my neck and shoulders are heaven.

Willow: Yep, it’s definitely time for me to put my hands somewhere else that’s proven to reduce stress. *wink*

*phone rings*

Colin: That’s my call. This interview is over.

Willow: Oh yes, it certainly is. And you’re not answering that call either…

When live-for-the-moment massage therapist Willow Jeffries bursts into Colin Vanderhayden's office, she makes it her mission to loosen up the future-focused CEO, knowing each moment of the present is too precious to waste. The last thing Colin needs is a flighty woman messing up his carefully-constructed plans, but her heavenly massages and addictive personality prove heard to resist. But he has no idea how sick she is.

Excerpt:

Cupping her face with his hands and angling his mouth, he poured the intensity she'd previously only seen him devote to his work into turning her body into a tingling, craving mass of need. She loved the way he cradled her-so gentle, yet firm.
Stars danced in front of her eyes, but she willed them away to press her tongue between his lips. No matter how light-headed she became, she refused to miss a moment of the kiss. Colin's mouth made the opportunity to enjoy worth the risk of passing out.
But, too soon, he broke off, panting, his eyes dilated with desire. “I have to get that.”
“Get what?” His words made no sense, then her ears started ringing. No, not her ears. His damned phone.
“Of course you do.”
But he'd already turned his attention to a conversation he gave far more importance to than anything she offered.
Sinking onto the couch, she pressed her fingers to her still tingling lips. Dear God, she hoped she didn't affect him as strongly as he affected her. If he became emotionally invested, she'd bring pain and misery into his life.

A Song at Twilight by Pamela Sherwood ~ Review ~

I had the pleasure of interviewing Pamela Sherwood for the release of her second book A Song at Twilight. The more I read about the book the more I just had to read it. I'm so honored I was given a chance to read this book to share my thoughts with you.

A Song at Twilight was everything I thought it would be and more. I truly enjoyed reading Sophie and Robin's story. I love a good reunion romance tale. I so enjoyed  how these two cared enough for each other to do what was best for each. However their love never faltered even when they were apart.

The fact that Sophie and Robin met on New Years Eve touched my heart a little more because my husband and I met on New Years Eve as well. That day holds a very special place in my heart..

Sophie is such a talented singer and I appreciated  there were song verses in different parts of the book. Sophie is such a sweet girl yet so strong and independent when she has to be.Another thing that I liked was that her family and friends were always there to back her up when need be. I always enjoy when there is family interaction in a book. It just makes it so much more appealing to me.

Robin is a true gentleman that some troubles in his past. One major hurtle that cost Sophie and Robin a few years separation. There is a lot of drama involved in their story and some really touching tearful moments as well.  I love a good mystery included in a wonderful romance story and this one contains a great mystery. This book certainly kept me turning pages, I found it very hard to set this book down.

I did not get a chance to read Ms. Sherwood's first novel, but let me tell you after reading A Song at Twilight I would certainly love to read it given the chance. I believe that Ms. Sherwood has a fine career of entertaining us with her tales ahead of her. I can't wait to see what story she will come up with next. If you enjoy a nice historical romance, I really think you should consider checking out her work. I know she has captured my attention that's for sure.

You may my interview with Pamela here. Don't forget to leave a comment to enter the contest while you are there.

Seven Little Words by Margaret Sutherland ~ Review ~

Seven Little Words is the first work I have read  by Margaret Sutherland and it certainly will not be my last. I really enjoyed this story. Ms. Sutherland has created characters that are very realistic with very realistic problems.

Cathy Carruthers has some emotional issues from her recent split with her boyfriend. She is running low on self confidence and has a mound of problems. Her grandmother experiences a fall that requires an extended stay in the hospital for rehab. So Cathy takes on the responsibility for  all the things her grandmother takes care plus helping keep her grandmother's spirits up. She's also thinking of a Career change.

David Hillier has a few problems of his own. His father has been ill and David is taking care of his father's  service dog. He has enjoyed his footloose and fancy free life. It allows him to go do what he wants to do when he wants to do it. Now he is hit with having to make a few choices. There is some major drama and a few scenes that had me scared for a little while. I don't want to give you too many details I will tell you the drama played out great though and I enjoyed the suspense and how it ended.

I enjoyed how these two formed a friendship while doing their best not to give into their attraction. The attraction is just too much though and they finally are unable to help themselves. However, there are many hurdles that they must cross in order to get to their happily ever after.

There is one major solution to a problem that I thought was just the perfect solution. Of course I can not tell you what the problem is or how they solve the problem. This would totally take the fun out of the story for you. So you must click the link and go purchase this book to find out for yourself.

I love dogs so with two completely adorable dogs in this book, the nice romance, and great storyline, this book hit a LOT of my high marks. I loved Seven Little Words!

I really enjoyed Ms. Sutherland's writing style and storyline. I was kept completely entertained thoughout the whole book. I know I will certainly be looking forward to read more of her work in the feature.

I was given the wonderful opportunity to read this book so I may share my opinion. As always it has been my great pleasure to share my opinion with you.

Artificial Gods By Thomm Quackenbush ~ Night’s Dream series ~Interview ~ Excerpt ~

Artificial Gods
 By Thomm Quackenbush

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Interview:
 CrystalToday I am happy to have Thomm Quackenbush stop by for a short interview. Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?
Thomm: I’m an author and teacher living in Upstate, New York.  I’ve written three books in the Night’s Dream series – We Shadows, Danse Macabre, and Artificial Gods – all of which largely take place within of few hours of where I currently live.  I try to keep my fantasy as close to reality as I can manage, though my concept of reality may not necessarily match that of my readers.  I delve into the strange aspects of history and make every attempt to have any spells or conspiracy theories resemble those of actual people.
CrystalWhere did you come up with the idea for latest release?
Thomm: My latest release is Artificial Gods, the story of two sisters who, one summer, confront the supernatural forces that have shaped their lives. Jasmine, my main character, played a very minor role in both We Shadows and Danse Macabre, but she seemed to have depth worth plumbing. I had a very clear idea of what her journey would be in the book and she surprised me by refusing to walk the course I had set for her.  I ended up writing two thirds of the book leading up to a pivotal moment, then she just there until I figured out why she was reluctant, which added a lot to the story.  When I went back to revise, I found that her reticence was already well foreshadowed.
Crystal What are you currently working on?
ThommI am putting the finishing touches on my fourth book in the Night’s Dream series, Flies to Wanton Boys.  It fleshes out the back story of my antagonist/anti-hero, Gideon, and details why so few mythical creatures have survived to modernity.
CrystalDo you have any special routine that you follow when you are writing?
Thomm: The first draft of my scenes is done in a spiral notebook with a pen.  It is decidedly low tech (though the pen itself, a gift from my girlfriend, looks like something elegant aliens would have left behind), but it tends to remove enough distractions that I can write freely.  Next, I transcribe my notes into a mini-notebook computer using WriteMonkey on a tiny, plastic desk in my basement.  Only once I have done all this do the additions end up on my main laptop (bless Dropbox for synchronizing).  I find that I need to be a bit inconvenienced or uncomfortable to work at peak efficiency.  I used to write in a very cramped closet in my last apartment, if just because it deprived me of much else to do.  I think I would write much less and of a lower quality if I started on my top of the line laptop because it would be too easy.
CrystalDid you have to do a lot of research for this book or any other? If so do you have a fascinating fact that you have learned you would like to share with us?
ThommFor Artificial Gods, I attended several meetings of the Pine Bush, New York, UFO and abduction support group the United Friends Observer Society, as well as going on a few sky watches with members of the group.  I did not bother telling them I was a published novelist, as I was certain that would have resulted in their clamming up and refusing to idly chat with me about the strangeness of the town, much of which ended up in my book.
For years, I had heard rumblings about Pine Bush being downright infested with celestial interlopers.  In our early twenties, my friends and I drove around the town a few times, but saw nothing that could not be explained away by the town’s proximity to Stewart Air Force Base.
The most fascinating fact of all might not be from the members of the United Friends Observer Society, but rather from my background reading.  Jack Whiteside Parsons, a literal rocket scientist who undoubtedly is owed some credit for the United States “winning” the space race, was a fervent occultist.  He was an acolyte of Aleister Crowley, who referred to himself as the Great Beast and the Anti-Christ, though even Crowley thought Parsons went a little too far with some of his ritual work.  Before each rocket launch, Parsons would recite the Hymn to Pan.  Parson and L. Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology, lived and did spells together for years.  All of this is mentioned in Artificial Gods, because how could I possibly leave it out?
CrystalWho are some of your favorite authors that you like to read?
ThommI have a constant appreciation for Neil Gaiman, who has occasionally deigned to answer my panicked authorial questions and thus endeared himself to me forever.  He writes fantasy in such a measured yet passionate way where I find most people spurt their fantasy elements wildly over the page.
My comfort reading is often Bill Bryson, who has a way of couching facts in such a way that I end up endlessly fascinated without realizing how much he has tricked me into learning.  For years, the audiobook version of A Short History of Nearly Everything was in near constant rotation in my car’s CD player.  It, along with that car, were totaled in a car accident in 2008 and I’ve yet to replace it, though I have consoled myself with the illustrated edition.
Crystal: Is there a genre you haven't written that you would like to try?
ThommI would love to write a comedic memoir in the vein of David Sedaris or Augusten Burroughs.  I certainly have the family for it, but I wince away from the idea of exploiting them.  When I suggested this plan to my mother years ago, she essentially told me that I ought to write it because someone should benefit from them.
Crystal: Do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?
Thomm:  Sure.  This is from the second chapter of Artificial Gods and is titled “Men in Black”:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Author's Favorite Scene Excerpt:

Around two in the afternoon, someone knocked on the door, three perfect sets of raps like a clockwork woodpecker soliciting entrance. Jasmine glanced through the peephole and saw two men in stiff black suits. Behind them, distorted by the fisheye lens, she saw a black Cadillac. The Jehovah's Witnesses certainly upped the ante.
She opened the door a crack, leaving the security chain in place. "Sorry, we already have a savior and we aren't accepting solicitations, but thanks for coming by."
Jasmine slammed the door, but it didn’t close. She looked for what was blocking it and saw four pallid fingers like maggot sausagessqueezed between the door and the frame. Immediately, she slid the chain free and opened the door so the fingers could be liberated. The front-most man slowly retracted his hand and put it at his side. "You are going to let us in."
"What? Yes, yes, of course! I'm sorry about your hand. I didn't see it there."
Both men nodded in unison and walked into her house. There was something about the way each moved that reminded Jasmine of a cheap wind-up soldier she had been given as a little girl, its parts never quite moving in a sensible way. It was as though these men had not grown up with joints and were uneasy about using them now.
The men sat on the couch. The short one fumbled with a curling wire projecting from behind his ear. Jasmine wondered why a Jehovah's Witness would need that, but then decided it must be for an old hearing aid, though the man was too young to need one. Or was he? It was difficult to settle on an age for either man. Certainly older than her, but in no specific way.
"Let me get you some ice," Jasmine offered.
"Ice?" asked the taller man. "Yes. Ice. You will get us ice now."
Jasmine dashed into the kitchen and placed some ice cubes in a Ziploc bag, covering this in a paper towel. How much more than this would be required for mashing some religionista's hand in her door? It was mostly his fault for putting it there. She would accept a copy of The Watchtower and pretend to care for a few minutes, but then they were out of there.
She returned and asked to see the injured man's hand.
"Yes. Let us show our hands," the man said. Both men stuck their arms out, palms up. Jasmine pursed her lips at this strangeness and reached out for the injured man's left hand. His fingers were long and pale, cool to the touch. The skin around the knuckles was torn but bloodless, and for a moment, Jasmine thought she saw something more beneath the torn skin, something silver or gray. The man retracted his hand to his side.
"What is this?" the other man demanded, looking up at her with his mouth half opened. His eyes were dark and unblinking, the irises almost black.
"It's ice. For your friend's hand."
"Yes," said the first man, matching Jasmine's cadence. "It's ice. For your friend's hand."
The two men took the bagful of ice and after a cursory examination, disassembled it on the coffee table into its components: ice, plastic bag, and paper towel. Then they began to put each, in turn, into their mouths. Jasmine backed away from them. Their attention returned to her. Both of their mouths were opened now, a sliver of paper towel sticking to the bottom lip of the smaller man.
"I think you two should leave now. My parents will be back any minute, and my father might shoot you."
"The only functional firearm in this house is locked in a case five meters from you," the first one said as though he were trying to mimic the robot from a fifties sci-fi movie. He flashed a badge, but all she could recall once he had put it away was that it was an inverted seven-pointed star with letters between each prong, but no notion remained of which. "We are from your government. We have questions."
"Then you should talk to my parents."
"If you want to see your parents alive, you will answer our questions," the smaller one said. "I am Ensign Donald and this is Vice Admiral Erikson. You will answer our questions."
Jasmine sat, though her instinct was to run. Donald removed a device from his jacket pocket, a small gray box with lights, and put it on the table between them. "What do you know about UFOs?"
Jasmine wanted to leave the room, to lock herself somewhere until they left, but found herself answering, "I don't know anything. People see them. I've never been interested."
Erikson jumped to his feet, shifting his weight from one foot to the other and back as though about to topple. "The most important subject in the universe and you are not interested?"
She shook her head. "They were always beneath my radar."
Donald leaned forward at the waist, his gaze transferred from Jasmine to a blank spot on the table. "You will give us all of your radar readings and your machinery now."
"I don't have… It's a figure of speech."
Donald unbent himself and looked at her. He tore a piece of plastic bag free and began chewing it, his mouth remaining opened and only his bottom jaw moving.
"You did not see anything last night," Erikson insisted.
"I didn't," Jasmine said.
"You took a photogram of what you did not see last night. You will give this to me now," Donald said, the plastic bag gone from his mouth and the ice melted to a puddle. He turned his head sharply, up, down, side to side, and then back to her. "Jasmine Woods, you cannot hide your thoughts from us. We are from the center of your planet. You did not see anything last night. You will come with us in our transport vehicle, and you will show us where it was."
Erikson reached for her. Jasmine pulled away and Erikson moved back into position. He picked a coin up from the table and held it to her. Then he closed his hand around it and opened it a moment later, empty. "Just as this coin is no longer in this dimension, your heart...will not...be if...you...tell...an...y...one ab...out this. Discharging! Discharging! We need to speak to your sister! Bornless, she has no head! Perform the Star Sapphire. Bring the moon! Ka ka ka ka ka," he said like a cheap electronic toy frying its circuit board.
Donald then sang "Mary Had a Little Lamb" in a falsetto, but skipped back to the beginning after one and a half verses with the hiccup of a broken record. Both men rose and with their awkward gait, hobbled out of the house again without another word. Jasmine looked out the window and saw another man in a black suit standing at the far door of the car, staring back at her. He was about seven feet tall, but the suit seemed tailored for someone a foot shorter. They all entered the car—none in the driver's seat—and it sped off.

Fascinating Rhythm by Lynne Connolly ~ Guest Post ~ Excerpt ~

Fascinating Rhythm
by Lynne Connolly

Today I have the great pleasure of hosting Lynne Connolly, who is celebrating her newest release Fascinating Rhythm. Welcome Lynne!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fascinating Rhythm – my love affair with music
My name is Lynne and I write rock star romances. I can’t help it, it’s the rebel in me.
More likely it’s the music lover in me. I adore music, I always have. It’s dragged me into arguments and so-called “discussions” that have nearly ended friendships, but more often than not it’s made them stronger. I have an American friend who is constantly trying to get me to listen to country and western, a genre I’ve never really got the hang of. Where I live, we don’t have it, and only the occasional superstar has managed to even get radio play.
I’m still not there yet, but I’m hanging on.
So what kind of music do I love? C&W aside (and I’m working on that), almost everything. Except, perhaps, modern jazz, the sort without a tune. Of course I have my favorites. In my world it’s Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, Radiohead, Mozart, nocturnes and Everything Else. There’s a lot of Everything Else.
In the past I had a few lost years, mostly spent with rock bands. Honestly, I can’t tell you. Really. But I can write about those experiences in my books. So some of the things you read about actually happened.
The first thing I learned was that rock musicians are people. The second that in the best, most enduring, music is it for them. It’s their life. The reasons might be different but everything they do relates to the music they make. This isn’t pop, where images are as important as the music, where performers have a machine around them, and partly because of their youth, partly because they are flattered and pampered and they have a longing to be famous, they can go out of control. That’s interesting in itself, and yes, I’ve written about that kind of musician in a later Nightstar book, “Her Dark Star” (you heard it first here!)
However, because a rock musician tends to know what they want to do, even though the lifestyle can distract them from time to time, and because most are older when they make it, they are more in control of their own machine. Oh, they have one, an entourage of staff that they need, but more of them tend to know the direction they’re going in and they will also have key members of staff who they rely on to help them manage the unwieldy machine. It gets worse during a tour, when drivers, managers, sound engineers, lighting staff and so on are needed.
That’s what I observed. But bands cope with the problems in their own ways, which is why I get to write the books.
Stop me, or I’ll go on all day. Let’s get to specifics.
Hunter Ostrander is the drummer for Murder City Ravens, the album is Nightstar, and like Phil Selway or any other drummer with a band that is a bit out there, he does more than play the drums. In fact, “percussionist” better fits his role. The idea for “Fascinating Rhythm” came from several sources. First the classical percussionist Evelyn Glennie, who is profoundly deaf, but despite that is one of the world’s best and most respected percussionists. Then the news that Upsala University, a center for research into studies for the deaf, is developing a new operation to restore the hearing of some deaf people by bionic methods – growing new audio nerves. But it can only work with people whose deafness is the result of audio nerve damage, and it can only work with people who were once hearing, because the neural pathways to the brain have to be there.
Hunter was created early in the series, and he wasn’t deaf. I’d have loved it if he were. But the girl he left behind in Sweden, Sabina, could be.
The whole story almost came together by itself, as did most of the Nightstar series. Sabina is nobody’s fool and neither is she a “victim” or considers herself deficient in any way. She knows who she is and what she wants, and that doesn’t include Hunter. Except that she has a link with him she can’t break. Friends first, then briefly lovers, at first she hopes to work the affair through and then go back to her life, but then she’s a candidate for the operation and then – she wants to hear Hunter play. She experiences him with her other senses, but for the first time in her life, that’s not enough. How would someone who only heard music for the first ten years of her life respond to something as new as Murder City Ravens? She doesn’t even know if she’ll like it, and if she has the operation and it works, it will put an end to everything she knows. Her career is predicated on her deafness.
Hunter’s mother is also a strong woman, and I enjoyed showing how Hunter’s early years put him at a disadvantage. Hunter’s mother is also deaf, and she’s a successful politician, working for the rights of deaf people and eventually going into deaf separatism. But her household was set around a deaf community, and she either didn’t make any effort for Hunter or assumed he would be okay. When Hunter decided that music was his thing, he learned the drums and percussion for his mother. But she wasn’t impressed, and Hunter only took wings when he did it for himself.
Anyhow, I’ve probably taken up enough of your time, so I’ll leave you thinking about bands you enjoy and the man at the back with the gleaming instruments. Ringo Starr claimed that he wasn’t the best drummer around at the time, hell, he wasn’t even the best drummer in the Beatles! So who was?
John Bonham, Keith Moon, Jason Bonham, Zak Starr, Buddy Rich, and the father of the modern drum kit, Gene Krupa?
Excerpt:
“And here we are, all grown-up,” he said.
She could feel his words rumbling through his chest, the vibrations in time with his lip movements. “I don’t know if I’ll ever grow up.”
“You’re adult enough for this.” He leaned down to kiss her, his arms banding around her to hold her close. Her hand remained trapped between their bodies and she could do nothing but keep it there while he captured her lips. He touched his tongue to hers, traced the line between top and bottom lip until it tingled, like using lip-plumping lipstick, and she opened for him.
There the analogy with lipstick came to an incongruous halt. He plunged in as if ravenous for her, as hungry as she was for him.
Ice froze her spine. What the fuck was she doing? Hadn’t she learned anything?
She pushed him away and, taken by surprise, he staggered back, stopping just before he hit the cart. “What’s wrong? I thought you wanted this.”
Oh, how she wanted him! But she couldn’t. Tears threatened to fall, filling her lower lids, and a lump settled at the top of her throat. “Will you promise not to disappear this time?”
He frowned. “What?”
“Last time, you remember? You didn’t write, didn’t call. Nothing. And I didn’t know where you were, so I couldn’t write to you.”
His chest rose and fell on a sigh. “I’m sorry. I know we—we connected the night before I left. But I couldn’t make any promises, so I thought it best to make a clean break.”
That was it?  She’d half wondered if he’d ask her to go away with him, share his adventure. But of course he hadn’t. She’d just graduated and started her job with Emmelie.
A hunted look entered his eyes, brightened the blue as his pupils, previously darkened with desire, regained their normal hue. “I planned to come back to see you, but Emmelie told me you’d gone home.”
Not good enough. “You had my family’s address in Iceland.”
He swallowed. “I did. I still thought it right to give us both a break.” Spreading his hands in a gesture of surrender, he opened himself to her. “I missed you at first. Then my life changed. I thought yours had too.”
Did he think she wouldn’t welcome him? Her lips tightened. He was probably right. She’d resented his abandonment until she’d seen him today. No, that was wrong. She still resented it. “You should have written.”
“I know that now. I’m sorry.”
It didn’t stop her wanting him, and he’d proved before that fucking didn’t have to mean commitment. Perhaps this time she’d be the one to turn her back.
She took the initiative and walked forward until her breasts grazed his chest. “Do you still want me?”
He sucked in a breath. “Fuck, yes.”
Why deprive herself of the hottest man she’d seen in months? So what if it was Hunter?
When he held her this time she knew they wouldn’t stop. He tilted his head to seal them together more securely, his kiss unrestrained. He explored her mouth, took his time, but she did the same, felt the incredible softness of his inner lips and the smooth texture of his teeth. His tongue stroked hers in the most intimate of caresses, then he sucked gently, inviting her to explore. Ravenous, she tasted him, touched him, wanting more, wanting it now.
He broke the kiss, but only so he could lead her to the bed. It hadn’t looked that big when they came in. Or was it her nervousness coming to the fore? Yes, that was it. “It’s been a while,” she whispered, hoping she hadn’t spoken too loudly. Sometimes she found it hard to tell.
She looked back at his face. “Me too. At least a month.”
He startled her into laughter, but at the back of her mind she also remembered what he was these days. Sex on tap, no doubt, for the sexy drummer in one of the world’s hottest bands.
For all she knew she was another girl in another port. Of course she was, he’d be moving on soon. So she’d better make the most of him, hadn’t she? She tugged at his T-shirt and he finished the job for her, impatiently pulling it off over his head before tackling her clothes. A zipper down the back and her dress peeled away like a bud casing, falling down her arms. She dropped her hands so she could finish the job and the dress fell to the floor.
Eager to feel her skin against his, she moved closer. As he put his arms around her, he popped her bra undone. The straps fell loose, but she lifted her head for another kiss, craving it like an addict.
From the way he took her lips, he felt the same.
All the time he kissed her like an angel—or a devil. When his lips left hers, he kissed down her throat, stopping to suck the hollow between her collarbones while he helped her off with her bra. Then he stopped moving.
She glanced down, wondering what was wrong. Were her breasts the wrong size or something?
He was staring down. “Damn. I’d forgotten.”
“What?”
“How pretty they are.”
She laughed. “How can breasts be pretty? I thought they were soft or something.”
“Pretty,” he said firmly, cupping one. His big hand enveloped her left breast, encasing it in warmth. He massaged it before drawing his fingers gently along the slopes to the tip, and then again before he lingered to caress. “I love the way they move.”
“Don’t they all move like that?”
“Depends how good the surgery was.”
She jerked back, crossing her arms over her chest. “I haven’t had plastic surgery ever. Not ever. But what if I had?”
He held his hands up in apology. “I didn’t mean to upset you. There’s nothing wrong with plastic surgery, it’s just that they feel different.” He growled. “Shit, I’m sorry.” He flicked a switch and the bedside lights came on, although she could see his lips fine this close.
She’d overreacted. “I’m on edge.” She dropped her arms and stepped toward him and he folded her into his embrace.
“Fucking insensitive of me,” he said when she lifted her chin. “It sounds stupid, but I’m kind of nervous.”
“Not stupid. I am too.” She stroked her hands down his back as if soothing a fidgety cat. The act calmed her in a strange way until he lowered his head and kissed her again.
Then it all came back, her arousal, surging up inside her, loosening her body, readying her for his invasion.
He eased her back and when she felt the mattress against her thighs, she realized what he wanted and let herself go as he lowered her gently to the bed.
She watched him divest himself of the rest of his clothing, revealing powerful thighs, no doubt honed from years of thumping the bass drum and a taut stomach, ridged with muscle. He shed the last of his garments, his underwear. “You used to wear tight black briefs,” she said.
He glanced at her. “Shorts are cooler. I don’t stick to one style. Call me fickle.”
She lost the smile and he came down to lean over her, propping his arms on either side of her body. “Hey, it’s okay. I was making a joke. Is there something wrong? Do you want to stop?”
Vigorously, she shook her head. “No, never. It’s just been a while for me too.”
“How long?”
“About a year.”
He gave a low whistle. She had no way of knowing if he made a sound, but she saw the way he pursed his lips and felt the air against her cheek. “You had better things to do?”
She didn’t want to answer. “You could say that.” She’d tell him about her forthcoming change if she felt like it. But he was moving on. No reason for him to know unless he stayed in touch. And she wasn’t counting on anything this time. “You look good.”
“You look beautiful. You might have pretty breasts, but altogether you make a beautiful package.”
He cupped her cheek, stroking the fine skin there, making her want to purr like a cat and rub herself against him. “You’re different, Sabina, you always have been.”
She had no desire to laugh now. His gaze held no flattery, his lips no light banter. For a brief moment out of time they met and exchanged complete honesty. “You too.” Because she understood. Understood so much that it had taken her much longer to get over than she’d ever imagined it would.
Pushing away from her, he said, “I need to get some protection. Get into bed and I’ll be back in a minute.”
So practical. One of the things she hated about being deaf was not hearing the gradations of tone. She didn’t know if he was murmuring or speaking normally. She could tell a whisper from a yell from the way the chest and neck moved, as well as the usual facial expressions that went with yelling. Usually she didn’t regret, because she couldn’t see the point in it, but sometimes a pang hit her. She wanted to hear his voice; she wanted to know what he sounded like.
He returned, walking across the room, his erect cock bouncing with each stride. She watched, fascinated, and he didn’t take his gaze from her but stood over her and tossed a few packets on to the bedside table. A few?
“Fuck, how many did you get?”
“A handful. Let’s see how far we can take it, hmm?”
Swallowing, she nodded, trying to look as if she did this every day. Except she’d just told him that she didn’t. “I’m not very good at this, am I?”
“I’d say you were excellent.” He dropped a kiss on her neck. “Top of the class.” He took a nipple into his mouth and delivered a hard suck, then lifted his head so she could see what he was saying. “A1.”
Laughing, she curled her arms around his neck to draw him closer. “You too. That feels good. Do it again.”
“With the greatest pleasure in the world.” He followed suit, lavishing attention on her other nipple while playing with the one he’d just sucked. He rolled it between finger and thumb, sending shots of sensation over her body. Tingles traveled along her shoulders and arms, sensitizing her to a new level before he kissed underneath. He licked under her breast and then moved down, touching his tongue to her navel and going farther. He said something against her belly and then lifted his head. “You taste great and you feel even better. Your skin is amazing, do you know that?”
She shook her head. “Thank you. You’re pretty good yourself.”
“I want you lying down properly, with your legs wide open. I want to know how you taste.”
