Interview:
Crystal: Today I have the pleasure of having A.E Via stop by to answer a few questions. Welcome, I'm so happy to have you here today. Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?
A.E.: Absolutely! My name is Adrienne Via, but I write under the name A.E. Via.
While I’m a fairly new author, only having written three books, I’m far from new to the LGBT genre. I’ve been happily reading primarily m/m for 9 years. It was only last year in early 2013 that I decided to write my own novel.
I live in Virginia Beach, VA and am a wife and mother of four. My family is huge and are all very supportive. Although none of them have read my novels (smiling) they are always asking how things are going and praising any achievements.
I run my own paralegal business (mainly filing bankruptcies for people that can’t afford a lawyer), and write in the wee hours of the night. Hopefully, I’ll be able to write full-time very soon.
Crystal: Where did you come up with the idea for Nothing Special?
A.E.: Well first of all, I love gay cop and firefighter stories. They are my ultimate favorite category in this awesome genre. I knew when I started writing that I would do one eventually.
‘Nothing Special’ just kind of came to me when I was driving one day. I pictured a hot, big and brawny man with big guns and decided to pair him with a cocky S.O.B. that wasn’t afraid of him…then I just ran with it. (Its weird most of thoughts come when I’m driving)
Crystal: What are you currently working on?
A.E.: Right now I’m writing Blue Moon 2 (which has a nice size excerpt behind ‘Nothing Special’), but I’m constantly making notes on following up with another story of a gay cop in God and Day’s precinct (possibly a rookie assigned to them).
I have a rule that I don’t write more than one story at a time. (which that rule may get shot-to-hell soon)
Crystal: Do you have any special routine that you follow when you are I?
A.E.: Surprisingly, no. I’m a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants type of girl. I will think of a character or characters and sit down and just start typing, or if I can’t type at the time, I’ll write it in my journal which is always with me. I don’t use an outline, or map out a setting and conflict, etc. I just write.
Also, I can write anywhere at any time. It doesn’t have to be in a quiet environment with a glass of red wine beside me (laughing), all I need is two working hands and my mind.
Crystal: Did you have to do a lot of research for this book or any other? If so do you have a fascinating fact that you have learned you would like to share with us?
A.E.: That’s a question I’m going to answer with complete honesty. Yes, I pretty much research every character (primarily because of their occupations) so that it of course makes sense. I’ve had firefighters, club owners, navy seals, chefs (that was a lot of research), escorts and doctors.
My favorite research is when I’m doing the sex scenes and then I get to watch lots and lots of porn. I want complete and total accuracy. (smiling) That’s all I have to go by until a man approaches me who is gay and won’t mind editing my scenes.
Crystal: Who are some of your favorite authors that you like to read?
A.E.: Oh my goodness. I’ve been reading m/m for almost a decade…whew. There are so many, many favs.
Um, my all-time favorites that are auto-buy are: GA Hauser, Sandrine Gasq-Dion; Abigail Roux; Kindle Alexander; River James; Mercy Celeste; NR Walker; Eden Cole
I’ll stop there…but trust me, there are so many more.
Crystal: Is there a genre you haven't written that you would like to try?
A.E.: There are no other genres that I have tried nor will try to write. I know I sound bias because I totally am, but there’s nothing better than gay male romance. I don’t think (well I hope not) that I’ll run out of stories that involve men loving each other. It’s just so damn beautiful, intense, and exciting. I can’t see myself incorporating women into the mix (ugh). So I’m 99.9% sure I’ll never write m/f/m either. I don’t even read m/f.
I will try other categories of m/m like: paranormal (I’d love to do a vampire series); western (I adore hot cowboys, but that’s going to take a ton of research); I may also publish my own twincest story…I know, I know it’s so taboo and not for everyone, but I’ve enjoyed the ones I’ve read. GA did a couple, Mercy Celeste, Sage Whistler…all awesome authors. If I did do it, it would be way later down the road.
Crystal: Do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?
A.E.: Oh sure! My favorite scene is a hilarious conversation Detective Leonidis Day is having with a closeted homophobic cop in their break room at the station:
“Oh hell. What the fuck is going on in here? This must be the officer’s gay alliance club meeting.”
Day blew an exasperated breath. “And now that you’re here, Ronowski, all members are present and we can begin.”
Day smiled as God and Johnson practically spit their drinks out laughing.
Ronowski fumed. “Day, you’re going to stop calling me gay! I have never been gay! I will never be gay, and I don’t like anyone that is gay! So stop saying that before people start believing your bullshit!”
Day clapped his hands together once. “Okay everyone those are the notes from last week’s meeting, now on to new business.” Day leveled Ronowski with a stern glare. “Ronowski, you are gay, man. You’re tightly closeted. But you are indeed gay, ultra-gay. You’re fuckin’ Marvin Gay. You crash landed on Earth when your gay planet exploded.” Day moved away from God and stood in front of an openmouthed Ronowski. “Come out of the closet already. It’s so bright and wonderful out here. Dude, I’ve seen Brokeback Mountain too, don’t believe that bullshit. No one cares who you fuck…ya know…like you tell me every. Single. Day. Of. My. Life,” Day said exaggeratedly.
He stepped in so close to Ronowski that he could smell the body wash he used.
“Let a man bang your back out one time.” Day leaned in to the man’s ear and felt Ronowski’s body give a fierce shutter. “I mean pound your ass so hard that you can’t walk straight for a week, and I guarantee you, you’ll want to march in the next gay pride parade, wearing nothing but a glitter jockstrap and a fuckin’ hot-pink feather boa.” Day stepped back and saw the beads of sweat that had popped up on Ronowski’s forehead. Satisfied he’d proven his point he refilled his coffee and left the break room.

Excerpt:
Day groaned at the reality cooking show that was on but left it on the station anyway. He was just dozing back off when God came through the door carrying a tray. He wore a sexy smile on his face and no shirt…just muscles and tattoos on full display. Day couldn’t believe his hole was actually clenching.
Glutton for punishment.
Day could see the newspaper hanging off one side and a tall glass of grapefruit juice.
“I thought you might be a little, umm…sore. So I made you breakfast,” God said proudly.
When God lowered the tray to the bed Day immediately had to halt his first reaction—which was to burst out with laughter. Accompanying the newspaper and glass of juice, was a small mug of coffee that was too dark for Day’s liking, two pieces of burned toast with too much butter on them that hadn’t melted so the toast must be cold and a big bowl of Cap’n Crunch cereal with a spoon large enough to stir spaghetti sauce.
God handed Day the coffee first. “Here. I know this is what you want first.” God chuckled.
Day winked at him and took the mug. Day took a decent sip and cringed on the inside at the bitter, cold coffee. When Day looked closer into the mug, he could see quite a few coffee grounds floating around.
He looked up, gave his lover a genuine smile, and said, “Thank you, baby. It’s perfect.”
God looked so pleased with himself that Day vowed he was going to eat and drink every single thing on the tray. He picked up the toast, took a bite and quickly chased it with some grapefruit juice. God climbed in the bed from the other side and spooned him from the back, kissing him across his neck and shoulders.
“Are you feeling okay? Did I hurt you?” God asked in a low voice.
Day swallowed the mouth full of half-soggy cereal, almost gagging at the texture before answering God in a relaxed tone.
“No. You didn’t hurt me at all. I’m a little tender, but it will go away soon.”
“You’re lying.” God kissed his cheek. “I’m going to run you a bath in that swimming pool you’ve got in your bathroom.”
“Only if you join me.”
God kissed him again and got off the bed to go into the bathroom.
Day ate his food faster than humanly possible and scarfed down the horrific coffee in an effort not to taste it too much. He said a silent prayer that he didn’t get indigestion and placed the tray down on the floor.
He got out of bed and winced with each step he took into the spacious bathroom. God had the lights off and a couple candles lit on the outer rim of the Jacuzzi tub. He was already waiting inside for Day. Day licked his lips at the beads of water running down God’s chest.
God lifted one corner of his mouth at him and that was invitation enough.
Day was already naked so he climbed inside the tub and settled between God’s firm thighs.
