Jack sprang to his feet. “What are you guys up to?”
“Bill wants to check the tow truck,” Rick replied, cutting Bill off.
Bill motioned towards the door. “Come with us.”
Jack tagged along, explaining he’d stayed at the hospital for moral support.
Rick faced Jack. “Where are we going?”
“The truck’s been moved to the body shop over by the police station.”
Rick weaved through the traffic. Bill’s leg vibrated so hard, Rick could feel the seat shake. “She’ll be okay, we won’t be long. We’re here.”
The men jumped out and circled the truck. A low whistle escaped Rick’s mouth at the sight of the bad dent decorating the front end and side of the truck.
Bill popped the hood then lay on the ground to inspect the bottom.
While Bill slid underneath the entire length of the truck, Rick kept an eye on Jack.
Jack squatted. “What are you doing? Do you think the frame is wrecked?”
A growl echoed underneath the truck. “Jesus, someone cut my brake line!”
Jack craned his neck for a visual too. “Are you sure?”
“Of course I’m sure,” Bill snapped. “Why would I mention it if it wasn’t?” He came up.
“Is this why we’re here, because the two of you suspected foul play? Why didn’t you tell me this before?” Jack’s nostrils flared. “This changes everything!”
Rick’s eyes locked on Jack’s. “Because you’re a suspect.”
